    I'm watching these, so I can try to use the 738 in XP-12! I'm gradually getting somewhere with the McDu. One of these days, I'll get it right and can maybe make a short little trip! BTW, don't add waypoints on the left side--you won't get anywhere! That must be for Directs and Airways? Today, I managed NOT to have any DISCO's!

    I'm pretty new to flight sim and the FMC and was wondering what to put for your SIDS and STARS if SimBrief doesn't have any. Do I just leave them blank and select my runways?

    • @MicahMesser
      @MicahMesser  3 роки тому

      Most airports have default SIDs or STARs for routes. I would recommend looking up real flights at flightaware.com/statistics/ifr-route/

    Great video as always! One thing I'm not clear on however is how to (of if you're supposed to) populate all the speed and altitude fields on the legs page? When I watch videos of a full flight, I see that both LNAV _and_ VNAV are used throughout, which makes sense. However, when I've flown using flight plans I've generated in SimBrief, the speed and altitudes are not set for _all_ the waypoints so my VNAV doesn't work (I think typically the waypoints in my SIDS and STARS usually have them set but the ones along the route do not). I know I can enter them manually, but this obviously never works as I can't work out what speed and altitude is appropriate for each waypoint.
    So two questions:
    1. Should every waypoint have a speed and altitude value set (given that I wish to use VNAV in conjunction with LNAV)?
    2. If so, how do I get/calculate these values?
    Thanks! :)

    • @MicahMesser
      @MicahMesser  4 роки тому

      The FMC will automatically calculate all speeds and altitudes at waypoints along the route. You have to add in the speed and altitude constraints sometimes. Other than that, be sure you are executing the LEGS and PERF pages, otherwise it won't calculate.

    So I watched the video you did going from cyvr to ksea and it helped me learn the FMC. I'd say I'm a pro (lol) until it's time to land. How can I figure out how to do ils? I hit app at like 2000 ft (in general) and bam, there goes the aircraft into the ground lol. I think my problem is knowing WHEN to hit the app because I never know at what altitude to do it at

      My advice is to look at XPlane's main map when you start doing TOD, set it for IFR, check that the final approach is bringing you within a few miles direct into the ILS feathers to the runway for your approach, and also, check the approach plate for that runway ahead of time, and this way you'll know what approach alt. to set if the VNAV doesn't work ahead
      of final, for some reason, you can always manually intervene, and make sure you're at say, 1750 or whatever the approach plate says to be at for the final approach fix. But,
      the FMC SHOULD make sure you're at the appropriate alt. for final and landing, on its own, as long as you've set it up right, and are still using LNAV.VNAV by then with the AP.
      What I do is, if I''m coming into KSEA let's say, by maybe 5 miles ahead of final, I hit LOC and let it arm--then, once the plane is turned into final, I set the two course knobs for
      final runway heading, put down gear at 10 miles or so, and hit that APR button! Then, the PFD should annunicate ILS, LOC, etc., and you should see your ILS engage and
      VNAV engage to bring you down to minimums. I hope this makes some sense. I find it better to do the LOC first, so you know you're lined up with the runway earlier,
      and then hit APR once it lines you up, you can give yourself a good 10 miles' headstart this way before hitting the APR button. It should just work and lock the lLS in. But
      basically the VNAV should work with the FMC as long as the right landing alt. is preprogrammed in when you first set it up for your particular arrival (it should be automatic
      based on whatever you're using for your current Nav data in the sim for that particular airport and approach). I would try it again, do a test flight, check the landing alt.
      for that runway, and as you just get near the ILS feather ahead of the runway, on the map view, just hit APR. The AP should just lock it in, and the ILS should just work.
      Of course you have to make sure your speed, autothrottle still on, and flaps are brought in at the proper times, and make sure your engines are set to continuous,
      your autobrakes are set for maybe autobrake 2-3, and your speedbrake lever is pulled up and armed. And, your two Nav. radios (set both) are set for the right ILS frequency ahead of time!

    • @Urbexnightcrawler
      @Urbexnightcrawler 4 роки тому

      @@thiscorrosion900 thanks! For example I flew today from kpns to kmob. I see the runway in front but I'm not sure of where to get the course and heading is that in main map also?

    • @thiscorrosion900
      @thiscorrosion900 4 роки тому

      @@Urbexnightcrawler oh, all of that info. should be on the particular approach plate for that runway: say you wanna do Runway 04 at KLGA, whatever, you call up the plate ahead of time, or keep it open when you get close to approach, the plate will have the Course, Nav. radio frequency for the ILS, and the landing alt. numbers from IAF to FAF, and minimums at bottom depending on type of landing. I also use LittleNavMap app. now, it's very useful,
      since it lets you call up all that info. within the app., and blow up the airport area and maps with ILS Feathers, etc., as you come closer, you can get all that info. within it on various screens. Plus it's a moving map for when you land and taxi. I think a good rule of thumb is, if you're doing a 10 mile final, you want to wait till you're just about at 10, drop gear, then hit the APR button once you're totally centered up for the final.
      If you hit LOC like 20 miles out, it should work and line you up a bit earlier laterally, that's about it. then you'd wait and hit APR at 10 miles or so.

      The same way you remove discontinuities, go to the next waypoint after the vector. Select it so that the waypoint appears in the scratch pad. At this point selecting the vector will overwrite it and move the waypoint up.
