- What's happening, people! I'm back with another Lucky Dip reaction (this time from Solo's Misc. folder, with the song requested by Sofia ;), and this time we listen to Suzanne Vega's "Luka" from 1987. Wow, I wasn't prepared for this one, which very much combines light, airy sonics with painful, heartrending lyrics. So join me for a special Lucky Dip reaction. Cheers.
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on UA-cam and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on UA-cam, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

The days of great songs are gone. Absolutely stunning!
Those days are long gone….
Todays music is all dance music for girls shaking their *** on TikTok(and that does have it’s place),
But the days of songs with amazing melodies and harmonies that you’d sing along to and listen to all the time are over.
But that’s what todays kids need and want: little 10 second music clips to dance to and background music for the videos they take of themselves.
I love Suzanne Vega! Her songwriting and storytelling are 'par excellence' taking you on journeys into her own little world and beyond. I've been following her since "Marlene on the Wall" in the mid 80s and finally got to see her in concert just last year here in London. Although she is used to playing with a full band, this time it was just her on guitar and a bloke accompanying her on bass guitar and they still produced a rich sonic sound to drive forward her songs. It was a great evening! 😎
One of the songs that defined the 80´s for me. Excellent song!
Suzanne is definitely worth a deep dive, and if you need files I’m happy to help. Shes on tour and I’m seeing her on Saturday.
Oh, wow! Have fun!
I have the first two albums ready to share with Matt, but I haven't got all her albums. If Matt decides to start another deep-dive 😅 maybe he will need your contributions later on. 😉
It's a very moving track, the jangly bright guitars and production lulls u into a false sense of security, which is apt, and then it goes into the words about physical abuse, denial and ultimately fear. I understand it be from a child's point of view, as that's the way a child introduces themselves to someone else "My name is..." and the way they are expressing themselves.
Don't feel bad that you got the wrong idea about the seriousness of the song going in, we all did at the time.
Ahhh Ms Vega, one of the best folk musicians out there and she wrote this song to try to bring some attention to what was at the time one of the big open secret cancers in our society child abuse, and her own abuse from her stepfather. Back then there was no such thing as child protective services, or rather the focus was on keeping children together, especially with their dads, because society believed it was better for them. Nowadays this song could just as easily be adopted for DV and coercive control cases. so yes very dark lyrics but I would highly suggest a deep five into her as she is a brilliant songrwriter.
Suzanne is amazing!! You should definitely dig into her discography
Agreed! I'd love to see a reaction to "Small, Blue Thing" ... ♡
from france....to all our brothers , friends...often silence...
Another great singer-songwriter from the new wave of female artists in the 80s. Her first two albums were huge here in the UK (and most of Europe) and rightly so. It was great for a folk rock artist to break through; record companies always seem to write the genre off as uncommercial, which becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Seeing your face as this sweet pretty jangly happy sounding song revealed it's dark dark message was a picture. I think Suzanne Vega was a genius for pulling off that beautiful juxtaposition. I ADORE this track for that very reason.
This was a huge hit song in the 80s and everybody liked it and turned it up in the car when it came in the radio, but it did make people uncomfortable.
I think people enjoyed it so much because it, everybody has been abused at some point or another, and it allowed a space for people to rethink and reflect.
I love this song but is so sad 💔😪
Matt, no need to apologize, how could you have known? You've been misled anyway as this song has nothing to do with Lucca. Yet, once you get what it's about, it's so much more than that nice sing-along-song from the radio.
A couple of weeks ago I watched some reaction videos of people who were watching the clip for R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" which makes me cry my heart out every time. Others as well. That brought me to reactions to the clip for "Luka", with people also getting really emotional and teary eyed. And that's a good thing. Makes us more human. Great song with a serious message.
I saw Suzanne Vega a couple of times live. Such a great singer with a wonderful back catalogue: "In Liverpool", "Ludlow Street", "Penitent", "Wooden Horse", "I Never Wear White", "Rusted Pipe", "Bound", "Night Vision", "Knight Moves" ... I'm in for the deep dive. :D
"Marlene on the Wall", "The Queen and the Soldier", "Gypsy" - don't miss out the best bits! 😆😁
@@darrenbertram7289 I asked for "The Queen and the Soldier" next. 😉
Not as good as "The Daisy and the Seal", though. 😂🤣 (Don't google it...)
I think for anyone of a certain age when they meet someone called Luka, they sing the first line of this song. Interestingly Luca was a real person who lived upstairs from Suzanne Vega, one day a magazine was delivered to her apartment with the name Luka on it and she was fascinated by the name. One day she saw a boy at the elevator and asked his name and he said "my name is Luka". She wrote the song based on his name and character. Although it is about the Luka in the song being abused, the real one wasn't .
Ha, it was about time you listened to one of the few female voices that I enjoy listening to. 🤗
At some point I grew tired of this song (I often get tired of the most played songs), but not having heard it for ages I could now appreciate how good it is. 😊 Great song!
Like some others here, I was reminded of this song when you introduced Lucca to us, so it's been a while! 😁 Now you finally know what people were talking about. 😉
He came crawling to me, begging "Yo!, do you have that Suzanne Vega track? Sofia will kill me if I don't react to it". I said "Matt, I am not cruel like you. I do not trust you after you told Manonononona that I have a tree in my garden, and it's barks is smoother than her horrid skin, but OK. I am doing this for Sofia, not for you.". He spat at me and ran away laughing. I feel so used now.
@@handsolo1209 Thank you, Hand! 🤗 I know you only did that for me. 😁
Well, he forced me to rip my CDs so he could have more of Suzanne... 🙄 So we will have more.
@@SofiaMarques18 He likes her haircut. He says it reminds him of the 1950s, when Madonononona was only 60. He also wants to hear Tom'd Diner so that he knows about Morten's son's troubles.
@@handsolo1209 Tom is everywhere! 😱
I made the folder available, but the decision had to be yours.
Uma das canções mais marcantes dos 80's. Bela e dolorosa.
So true
About bloody time!!
Prince sent a note to Suzanne about this song, this is learning about this fun fact that I came across her wonderful poetic work and got to appreciate her very distinct acoustic guitar playing, it said : “Dearest Suzanne, Luka is the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time. There are no words 2 tell you all the things I feel when I hear it. I thank God 4 u.”
Wow, that is quite the compliment! And well-deserved, this is a masterpiece.
This was my first ever favorite song as a little kid, which seems odd considering the subject matter about child abuse, but I didn’t know what it was about and just loved the sound of it. Then as an adult I got into her albums and she became one of my favorite artists. She has an amazing catalog.
Amazing!
I think the song is designed to catch you off guard, as there is a light breeziness to the tune. Pumped up Kicks by Foster The people works in a similar way, people singing the catchy chorus and not realising what they are singing. As others said it was partly based on her own experience, also by a child she used to see outside her apartment building. That said I think the song probably resonates with anyone who has been in an abusive relationship, child or adult, or has been witness to one, with the denial and refusal to discuss the situation with an outsider. Heartbreaking and tragic. She did a lot of great tracks.
Great song, she wrote this secretly about the emotional and physical abuse from her stepfather. 🎧
Not sure if you will see this, but the video for the song (almost every song from the 80s had a music video) is a real heartbreaker, as Luka is a little boy who lives upstairs from Suzanne.
Another song that I find similar to this (with completely different subject matter) is Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People. I just discovered you through ABBA. I can’t Patreon anyone right now but maybe in the future?
Have your heard the song 88 Line About 44 Women by the Nails?
I also think Nena’s album from the mid 80s with 99 Red Balloons on it (as well as the original German version, 99 Luft Balloons) is a banger. It had 5 English and 5 German songs on it and both version of 99 were international mega hits!
Check out her song -- 99.9 Fahrenheit degrees , caramel, blood makes noise
