RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.

I've always loved this song. It's from 1987. Reminds me of when my friend Franco and I moved to Florida. It was very, very popular. Until recently I never paid attention to the words and its deep and dark meaning since the melody and the instrumentation captured most of my attention all these years due to the fact that they are so good as you both said. Hugs from dad. ❤
So glad you responded, and love the song! That makes it extra special!
@@JKonstage Thank you so much for the comment! 👍
Luka: proof that an up-tempo pop tune can have dark, disturbing underpinnings.
@@kbrewski1 or XTC, or The Smiths...
Lol that's most jpop songs
Try James Blunt's The Girl That Never Was - lovely lilting melody and arrangement, but lyrics that are sadder than Monsters.
Beautiful pick. The album this comes from Solitude Standing, is a masterpiece. Don't let the rest of it slip under your radar. The entire thing is brilliant and deep and unique. This was the hit, but everything else takes it even deeper.
Great Dan request JK, you said it was coming. Such a beautiful song with dark undertones of abuse that are so subtle some people never get it. It pulls you in and then you have to deal with the content. She has a lot of other great songs to cover. Great reaction NicknLex. Please do more Suzanne Vega. 👍👍
In my 60+ years I've listened to a lot of singer/ songwriters but only 2 have stayed with me all that time.
Paul Simon is one and Suzanne Vega is the other. She is so underrated but her music is timeless ( and she's matured so beautifully)
It's about Child abuse. And Suzanne is one of the most brilliant Folk artists in music history! Love her!!!
This song is about child abuse. The bright uptempo music is a metaphor of how he dismisses the beatings he endures at night. Great song, chokes me up every time I hear it.
This song reminds me of my 10 year old self in the early 60's seeing the effects of child abuse for the 1st time. So many questions and the hopeless feelings of a child facing something they can't help with.
Thank you both so much. Hard for me to hold it together when I hear this song. Amazing that a song like this could have been a radio hit. Great reaction!
Glad you did the Marathon before the hit song. People need to know that her catalog is incredible.
@@scottanderson8420 I actually requested Luka one day earlier. But it all worked out! Thanks.
An incredible singer/songwriter and a mighty fine guitarist as well. Many of her songs are like poetry. Love to hear you both react to one of her longer songs "The Queen and the Soldier".
JK thanks for your request!! So good to see Nick and Lex reacting to her.Really good reaction!! It seems to me that we are in the middle of another purple patch!!
This song hit me so hard love the lyrics great music video.
Very nice reaction, and thanks, JK, for requesting the video. I, of course, had heard the song many times but wasn't an MTV watcher, so I had never seen it. Just lovely, and I really liked that it was in black and white, which I think suited the serious nature of the song.
🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
this song makes me cry every time I hear it, it's very sad, it's about an abused child, it's heartbreaking
The abused child was Suzanne herself, she later confirmed. 😮💨
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 oh wow, I didn't know that, Thank you for the info.
I saw sweet cool Suzanne in the early '80s and have been a fan since. "Queen & the Soldier" roped me. She's of the same set as Kates Bush & Wolf, Joans Armatrading & Baez, Patty Smith and Natty Merchant in their fearless poetic prowess. Check out 10,000 Maniacs' "What's the Matter Here?" about the conundrum of hearing child abuse and feeling helpless to do anything about it.
Kudos to JK! More of this!
LOVE Joan Armatrading!!
@@debrabrabenec3731 Joan is Jimi reincarnated as woman. Or maybe a co-incarnation with Benjamin Clemantine. "Down to Zero", "Love and Affection", "Walk Under Ladders", "Stronger Love" "Shouting Stage", All a Woman Needs"...all greats. And there's more and more.
Love the Canadian attire. Hope you had a good time there. The marathon was great and this song was a big hit for her, despite the sensitive message.
This is an amazing song, yet I'm a little sad that this tends to be all she is known for with a lot of people. Her catalog is incredibly rich with beautiful lyrics and engaging melodies. One of my favorite singer-songwriters.
Check out the marathon from earlier this week!
@@JKonstage It was a good selection, but as I commented there, Suzanne has more variety in her catalogue, in particular, more punchy numbers like Blood Makes Noise, As Girls Go and In The Eye.
@@JKonstage I caught it and really appreciate your suggestions. Enjoyed it a lot, though I have never been especially fond of the remixes of Tom's Diner. I love the beauty and simplicity of the original. Your selections were very good, though. I could list a dozen more I love, but that isn't meant to take anything away from your choices.
@@jameswarner5809 Thanks, James. I almost chose both Blood Makes Noise and As Girls Go. But Blood Makes Noise is only 2 1/2 minutes, so I looked for longer songs. And I love As Girls Go, especially since it has a great solo by Richard Thompson. But rereading the lyrics made me a little skittish, since I thought it might stir up some controversy given today’s climate. What do you think about that?
@@JKonstage If The Kinks could get away with that subject matter in 1970, people should be enlightened enough now.
Nice one JK! I've always been fascinated by the juxtaposition of the serious subject matter with the bright, jangly guitars. It's a really powerful message, sadly more relevant than ever today.
I'm really glad she brought such a topic up with her music, it was done by some before but she made a hit of it
I sat in a small room with about 50 people, at a tiny venue in a midwest college town.
Suzanne played all the songs off her record, and as we tried to convince her to play an encore, she said; “ I don’t know any other songs!”… “I have this new song I’m working on, I can try to play it”.
It was a sketch of what would become Tom’s Diner.
Fun memories…❤
@@kbrewski1 Ann Arbor
@@mackymintle7806 We live there! Was it at The Blind Pig?
@@debrabrabenec3731 as I recall, it was in a building that used to sell Winter gear, Skis, etc… that became “The Ark” location for several years.
I know that the Ark venue has been moved, or possibly even resurrected in numerous locations around town…through the years. (Last time I heard it was upstairs on Main Street somewhere downtown?)
I left Ann Arbor a year after seeing Suzanne that night, and was away from Michigan until recently!
Is there a local music scene still in A2?
Wow...I've never seen anyone laugh and giggle as much as you guys after listening to a very moving and emotional song like this about child abuse.
We both have a reaction like that when we’re crying. We’re both in tears and giggling. Defense mechanism? Call it what you’d like :)
You nailed it. Reaction totally missed the point of the song without anything substantive. Must be a Gen X thing. Move on to happy things.
@@richardkazmier9414 - Yep....they totally missed the point of the song. Dude even dismissively said at the 6:45 minute mark that it was 'A little bit sad'. These guys must've thought it was a song to dance to.
@fidel2x I agree completely. They're an insult for those who lived that horror.
Growing up in a huge apartment complex in NY a neighbor’s daughters came running over to our place across the hall running away from their father who beat them .😢
A nice sounding song that's all about the horror of abuse. So hard to reconcile the music with the lyrics. Then again that's how abusive relations go. It's all about denial and the hope it all stop. Please report abuse, you could save a life.
Too late.
This video is from 1987 and was one of the first to use computer effects. Many, many viewers have stated that this accurately and succinctly summarizes their own experiences, unfortunately. There are several videos on YT where she explains the genesis of this song which she wrote in one take without any changes.
@@kbrewski1 Yes - that was an amazing CG video along with Money for Nothing.
I always liked ths song. Way to go JK. FYI Suzanne also did a spanish version of Luka.
Never knew that!
Actually I didn't either saw it on google.
Great reaction ❤
To any "The Sopranos" fans, the little boy in this video is Jason Cerbone, who played Jackie Aprile Jr. on the show.
How can you smile to such a sad song, are you crazy?
We were not listening to the lyrics... we focused on the Music. Just like other millions of people who didn't know what the song was about. Geez..
On one of the other reaction channels that I follow, the young husband and wife have a kid named Luka. They came on excited to react to this song, and those of us that knew it started commenting immediately for them to prepare for the tone and subject matter... of course it was not what they expected.
Don't judge a book....
Emotive song... Great voice and chorus, I LOVE IT!
I would wager Suzanne is a big influence and inspiration for Dido, please try "Marlene on the Wall" next which was her first hit single in '85 and is vg😊
Nick reacted to Marlene in a marathon entitled “Sublime Songwriters,” back in May.
@@JKonstage ok thanks
So I remember the first time I heard this. Watching 120 minutes on mtv back when they played music. I was crying halfway through the first verse, and I was a total mess by the end. I can always tell when reactors have blocked out the lyrics. or that they aren't personally touched by them, or they don't understand them. 35 years later, and I still have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it, because it really is a great sounding tune.
GREETINGS,YOU TWO ALWAYS MAKE ME SMILE..PACKAGE STILL HEADED OUT SOON..SHIRTS AND MORE..MUCH LOVE MY ROCKY MTN FRIENDS..LOVE,KENT.
such a haunting yet catchy song!
A powerful song rarely discussed or put into words for a song!
Je suis un Montréalais et j'aime beaucoup vos chandails!!
Thought provoking and Eye Opening
My name is Luka,
I live in a gopher hole.
Night Vision is my favorite from that album
Glad you did, Luka -- her biggest hit. Thanks JK for requesting it. Sometime you'll have to check out her industrial song, Blood Makes Noise. She really does visit a very wide range of styles.
Another similar song to react to is White Lion - "When The Children Cry"
Luka is about child abuse. This song sent out awareness about this sensitive issue.
A perfect song that would accompany this is Hell is for Children by Pat Benatar. Sadly Luka is about child abuse.
Suzanne Vega’s duet with Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, “In a Lonely Place” is absolutely sublime.
Nothing like the constant happy smiles to a song about child abuse f8rst and watch from me
We didn't know. The audience knows. It's a blind reaction not a analysis of the lyrics which we didn't even pay attention to..
More Vega, please
John, there are five more songs in the marathon Nick mentioned from last week.
she is a white lady from calif and her mom married a Puerto Rican and they moved to Spanish Harlem in NYC when she was a little girl where my wife is from and Suzanne was heavily influenced by the Puerto Rican NY culture and speaks Spanish..
Also, have you discovered Captain Beefheart yet? Totally different. Moubtains of matetial. Try Batchain Puller or Big Eyed Beans From Venus?
Gotta admit, wasn't the biggest SV fan until past couple weeks. Thanks JK.
Glad to hear it!
Suzanne Vega yessssss
Listen to Song of Sand
Martika. Toy soldiers reaction. ❤
A little bit sad??!!
So, did you like Montréal even if you were here only for a short time?
We LOVED it! Beautiful city with a lot to offer! We’ll plan to be going back for longer!
This isn’t a little bit sad ! It is a lot sad ! At first my dear I didn’t think you got it but you named drop the Natalie Portman movie . I will never forget when she asked the hit man if life is this bad when you get older and he said “ It gets worse ! “
Such a good, heartbreaking line! 💔 😭
@@NicknLex Sorry I might have gotten one word wrong . I think she said hard instead of bad .
A story about child abuse effectively told through song.
I think Suzanne lives in a brick house. With thick walls. 😊
Keep going. Suzanne Vega has lots of great stuff. Try Caramel or Pornographer's Dream?
Caramel is in the marathon Nick mentioned, from earlier this week.
marlena on the wall is excellent by suzanne vega
Nick reacted to it in a marathon in May, called “Sublime Songwriters.”
smiling during a song about child abuse?...really?....
Guys, you're both so lovely, and you're so dedicated to these videos, but it feels to me like you rushed this one a bit. Maybe it's because I find this song utterly, utterly heartbreaking and felt that you didn't listen to it closely enough to really feel that yourselves. Tbh I would be happy for you to reduce content if it meant that you could approach songs without having spent *all your time* listening to songs. I still love what you do, though, so please don't think I'm being negative for negativity's sake!
Why were you guys smiling during a song about child abuse? It's a good song but the smiles were NOT appropriate.
We were clearly not paying attention to the lyrics as we usually pay more attention to the music. The music sounded happy. Lots of people in the comments sauing that they had heard the song hundreds of times and had no idea of it either.
@@NicknLex Fair enough but you should probably post that in your comments section. It looked real bad and made me not want to watch any more videos from you.
The song was about child abuse.
Yep, we talked about that more than anything 😜
