  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Suzanne Vega reaction from her 1985 self-titled album, and this time we listen to "Small Blue Thing," a really intriguing track lyrically, set to most soft sonics, though there are some forte-style guitar chords along the way. So join me as we listen to more from Suzanne. Cheers!

For me, Suzanne Vega is THE quintessential NYC solo artist! I know you’re juggling a lot, but she’s worthy of an album by album deep dive, especially everything through 2007’s Beauty & Crime. Just a thought.

Ha, yes, Matt has so many deep-dives going on that I specifically asked he wouldn't do a Suzanne Vega deep-dive when I shared this with him. I thought it would be a good idea for him to go through mine and other people's favourites (based on the comments here), even jumping from album to album. He has so much on his hands, I thought he should focus on "the best" songs, at least for now.
Anyway, I don't have all her albums, and for now Matt only has the first two. Maybe later, when some of the other deep-dives are over, he can go deeper. 😉

Such a beautiful, *beautiful* song. Gorgeous arrangement, and her sweet, strong, supple voice floating exquisitely above it. Have you done Some Journey yet. Possibly my favourite song from a superb debut album.

No, he hasn't done it yet, but I guess he will soon. 😉 Also one of my favourites.

One of my favourites from her first album, though they are almost all favourites. 😁
I always thought she was just imagining herself as a "small blue thing" (like a marble), while curling up with her knees against her mouth, though I never figured out if there is something deeper.
I always particularly liked the part with lines "I am falling down the stairs / I am skipping on the sidewalk / I am thrown against the sky / I am raining down in pieces / I am scattering like light" (from 3:32), because all along the sonic elements and the melody seem to me to mimic the lyrical content in a very vivid way. At least I can see it all in the sound - the marble hitting each step of the stairs on its way down, skipping on the sidewalk (haha!, pavement, indeed... 😉), being thrown up in the air, coming down in pieces... and so on. 🙂 I was always in awe at how well is it done. 😯
Lucca was sleeping soundly on her chair, it must have sounded like a lullaby to her. ❤

Gotta do her signature song next: "Marlene on the Wall" 😎

I hesitated between this one and Marlene, and now I was thinking Some Journey or Marlene next... 🤔 Now this is one more vote for Marlene. 👍
Thank you for your suggestions, Darren, keep them coming! Excited to hear your suggestions for tracks on the second album too. 😉 I would like Matt to go to and fro between different albums (though I have still only shared the first two).

@@SofiaMarques18 Cheers Sofia. There are some cracking tracks on the second album, not a single dud among them. But I'd have to say my favourite is "Gypsy". It's like floating through a caramel infused dream cloud as she lyricises about a past transient love (which is actually a true story which she recounts at her concerts. Should Matt listen to it I'll divulge it here 😎)

@@darrenbertram7289 Oh, I think I have even more favourites on the second album. Solitude Standing, Calypso, Language, In The Eye... I can't name one. 😁
I have mentioned thay story to Matt (Gypsy / In Liverpool), but I am sure you will tell it much better and I would love to read it, too. Unfortunately, I no longer have my 99.9⁰F, so I can't share the later track now...

Aww, just aww. This is so comforting for me, although it's also kind of devastating. I thought I knew what it was about but I don't remember. Something along the lines of depression makes you want to curl up into a very small thing that is hard on the outside and not destructable (or hurtable)? But then she's "turning in his hand", slipping from his attention, skipping on the sidewalk and scattering like light - as if the small blue thing gets shattered ... and depression is hitting again? Just a thought.
Love love love that song anyway.

Awesome insight, Seb, I do think that "curling into a small but indestructible object" is the essence (having read other comments here and relistening a few times). And I've seen you back in the comments the last couple days, very happy to see. And thanks as always for all the stuff you're sharing and the patience, you are massively appreciated, my friend.

Hey Matt… can we get a couple Tori Amos reactions soon, please?
