Love your content Matt, just doing my first nano tank based on your beginner betta tank vid. Found a Maidenhead Aquatics in Gosforth near me so been down this wekeend and picked out some plants. Keep it coming!
One of my fave fish species, I’ve got 4 myself. Keep them with smaller/dwarf rainbows and tetras and corydoras. Multiple feeds a day and water care seems to let them grow up and get a good amount of food. Love the vids Matt 😁
Hi Matt Very good video and very informative about the situation of L046 (Hypancistrus zebra). I currently work monitoring the ichthyofauna of the Xingu River and I can say that I have seen them in the wild. And yes, it is protected by Brazilian legislation, which does not allow the collection and export of specimens. And even less the reproduction in captivity in Brazil, unless it is for research (as is the case here since I work in partnership with LAQUAX - the ornamental species laboratory of the Xingu). And I can say that the Xingu substrate is not very similar to what I see in nature LOL. Imagine that almost all substrate (gravel) here has a more yellowish tint. But of course, somewhere in the Xingu may be more similar to the commercialized product. Keep up the good work!
What an attractive fish that is! I agree. It would be enjoyable to have only them in a tank. Thanks, Matt! I learned a lot, and look forward to your next review.
Thank you I look forward to seeing the new videos. I want a tank but I want to start it on the right foot. Plus I really enjoy your videos on the fish that can and can’t live together.
Love your videos brother... I'm hoping to cross the pond this year and visit your store a d hopefully meet you... I'm wanting to do a Scotland get away and would not the miss the chance to visit you guys... Cheers 🍻
could you do a video about the ecological impact of the aquarium hobby. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about wild caught fish because I feel a bit uncertain about it.
Definitely, it's a weird subject to be honest and can be looked at in many different ways. Personally my outlook in short is that exporting fish from the wild done properly and sustainably is a good thing for those areas. Without the fish to export the river becomes worthless and only really useful for food. This is why we end up with big invasive fish being introduced to areas and killing of native populations of fish which will never be seen again. But that's one small part of a massive debate so I will definitely put it on my list of videos to do.
I love these fish files! 🙂 Really informative and helpful. I wondered if you could do one on tiger barbs? Some say they should be in a species only tank, others that they're not so aggressive that they can't be kept in a community tank. (With the right tank mates.) Your thoughts, and care advice would be fab!
Great informative fun vids Matt! Save us a nice violet/sapphire full moon betta please. Saw this I fish in the shop very impressive looking creature. All the best!
Species spotlight request... Emerald Eyed Rasbora. Just got some. They are quite special! Even from a distance, that eye and dorsal spot stand out brilliantly. Can't wait for mine to settle and shine even brighter...
When you say high flow are we talking actually high flow or just not stagnant? I've seen people say hillstream loaches need high flow, and yet I've seen them kept in betta tanks just fine.
Hi Matt, Cool video!! When will u be posting a update on your 30l nano tank with your betta fish? I’m just in the process of setting mine up and I have kinda followed your video for guidance! Would be good to see how the tank look a few months in??
Matt i really like your videos. I love fish tanks but I don’t know what size is a good tank to start with. Is glass tank’s better than plastic tanks . Can you do videos on tanks sizes and plastic versus glass and what are good versus bad on both thank you
Thank you! Absolutely I will include it in a later video. In short glass for me is always better as plastic is very limiting and scratches easy. As for size the bigger the better but personally 60litres and up is a good starting point.
Md lead me here ( eventually) great to see you doing your own videos matt, always enjoyed your knowledge & personality when MD dropped by, wishing you all the luck 🤞🤝🤝
Assalam mu alaikum from South Africa, I've been bitten by the MTS bug, and plan to get more, just wanted to know as someone who is new to this hobby, when cleaning the tank is it necessary to cycle the tank prior if so for how long as I don't have a separate tank to keep the fish during cleaning 😊. Shukran
I have 10 of them in a small aquarium, about half a year old now. Growing so slow haha. It’s a shame they hide a lot so you don’t see them very often. I take that as a compliment since I’ve got enough hiding spots 😅. Would love to see a scape suitable for these fish!
Oh my gosh, they are so cute! Thank you so much for this very interesting and very informative video! Also you made me giggle when you were like no, I’m not going into it on this video… You can look it up. But be careful if you Google it😂😂😂
very nice fish, how many did MD buy? haha. i really hope one of you guys will make a big/nice scape for these pleco's nice to hear you talk about cites, i learned about that in school, ( wildlife managment ) would you consider making a video about ordering fish / plants / hardscape and deliveries and stuff? i've been offered to take over a fishshop ( partly as joke / partly serious ) and i'd like to know what it actually means to run a shop. great videa as always, you're getting better and better 👍
Another great video. Do you think they would thrive in the African tank behind you if the fish were different. I have a similar set up to that, and would live to get some zebras
Thank you, Matt. Great information. Curious . . . what do they go for in your Fish Shop? So it doesn't sound as if spinach, zucchini squash, other green veggies, etc. would work for the L046? The African tank is just getting more and more spectacular! See you in the next one.
Hypancistrus zebra largely eats algaes in the wild and bryozoa, along with detritus. So no vegetables wont work. But they also aren't carnivores in the way many people think of it so I wouldn't label as omnivorous either. There is some reasonable literature on the genus, for the diet of Hypancistrus zebra though you'll need Google translate as it's in errrr Spanish I think.
One of the reason's they do still command a high price is even though they will breed in captivity they produce very small clutches, if you get 15 babies from a pair that you have paid £100 each for and looked after for the 2+ years that it takes them to reach maturity, then provided the right conditions for them to breed, then brought up the babies to the 2''' size that is a lot of time and effort compared to say breeding Bristlenose plecs hence the higher price.
If you want to see big catfish...the zoo in Rotterdam (Netherlands) has some huge ones..about 2 meters..and some absolute monster aropaimas...bad grammar 😅 but you know what I mean...it's really worth the watch
Hi Matt,,,,,,,,,,, plz let me know do you have web shop,,, if i need to buy some aquarium things, how can i do , and i know you have creation store. Roshan from Paris
hello @Fish Shop Matt I'm an old viewer of yours so few days back I was using ChatGPT and came across a concept of injecting liquid fertz directly into the substrate(preferrably inert). I couldn't find any specific proof about the legitimacy of the concept. So, can i expect you to shed some light on the topic?
Hmmmmm that's a very intriguing thought. I know there are substrates that say they do a similar thing by locking up nutrients but I will do some digging and let you know.
The danios would be ok but may prefer it a bit cooler. I wouldn't put clown loaches in as they would gobble the food before the zebras got a sniff of it.
These L-046 ZEBRA PLECOSTUMUS IS VERY EXPENSIVE COSTING AROUND THREE THOUSAND PESOS PLUS AROUND THREE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED PESOS APPROXIAMATELY AROUND SIXTY FIVE U.S DOLLARS EQUIVALENT.. IN THE PHILIPINES..
...or even more than that. The only ones I've seen are a pair currently available for sale at a store here in Melbourne for $3,500 😵Which is why when Matt says if you want to try and breed them, get yourself a group of 6 or more, I'm like yeah no worries... 😏
A lovely fish and I totally understand the legislation around protecting them in the wild but if they're easily tank bred they shouldn't still be as expensive as they are.
It is indeed not difficult to get them to reproduce, but growing up to sales length (4cm) takes me more than a year. The number of youngsters is also not that big (with me between 6 and 16). Here in the Netherlands they are for sale in stores from 99 to 159 euros, but if you search on the internet you will probably find a better price at hobby growers

Bucket list fish! 😍
Absolutely!
Thanks for including natural wild habitat footage, it's very illustrative and important to the discussion of habitat loss.
It's definitely something that needs to be talked about more, we always take these fish for granted because they are sat on a tank at the store.

Aren't they!

How much are these in your shop Matt? I'm interested :) I have a group of 7 already there great fish
I can't actually remember now way too many fish in the shop with way too many different prices hahaha
£170 I think
Love the video, packed full of info. One question: Does MD just live at your shop? lol Take care, hope you feel all better soon.
Thank you! Yeah pretty much! 🤣
I did not know they stayed so small. I have always admired them.
