I have noticed alot of appreciation for "The Monkees" in recent years. It seems they are finally getting their due.
People just aren't happy these days and the happy songs from our past stand out more then ever before.

I was SO lucky to have met Peter Tork in 1982 on Venice Beach. We ended up being "coffee buddies" as he hung out on at the boardwalk alot. I was like 21 and he was just open, warm, and appreciative of his fans. I saw him about 2 or 3 times a week for the three years I was there.

Well, there was already The Four Seasons, The Beach Boys, the Lovin' Spoonful (who were considered for the TV series before the decision to invent the Monkees) and the Beatles (whom the Monkees were patterned after), not to mention Herman's Hermits, Dino, Desi & Billy, the Dave Clark Five, the Association, Paul Revere and the Raiders, to name a few. Even the Rolling Stones drew "screaming girls" like a 'boy band' in those early days!

I love it when people who have never heard of the Monkees do reaction videos to their songs! The Monkees are my favorite band of all time, and it just warms my heart to see other people enjoying them and learning about them and their music. So many people have such a negative attitude toward them because of how they came together (they were essentially a "made-up band" created for the TV show), but as you saw and heard, their music is uplifting and much better than those critics would have you believe. Speaking of the TV show, definitely check that out! You can't help but laugh at their silly antics. That was the whole purpose of their show--to entertain, to make you laugh and feel good. It makes me sad to think that so many people miss that point. They wrongly judge the Monkees for being "fake." But if you dig deeper into their history, you will see that yes, they did enjoy hanging out and performing together. They may have had a few squabbles, but that's just like any "family." They essentially were like a family, and the two remaining Monkees (the other two sadly passed away) still enjoy touring together to this day. I really hope you will take the time and check out more of their music and the TV show. There's so much more to the Monkees than them being "The Pre-Fab Four!"

My "Daydream Believer" connection. "Daydream Believer" is a song composed by American songwriter John Stewart, shortly before he left the Kingston Trio. I installed the satellite dish for John Stewart in Novato, CA. On the stairs going up to the MBR was the ORIGINAL Gold Record for "Daydream Believer" hanging on the wall. When I commented about it, he told me that song alone bought him a few houses.

Singer (this time): Davy Jones (from Wales, UK) RIP
Other guy at piano: Peter Tork RIP
Guitarist: Mike Nesmith (sang his own compositions)
    Tambourine: Micky Dolenz (frequent singer)
Side notes: Micky Dolenz had been a child actor, and had the title role in the TV series "Circus Boy" in the late 1950s. Also before the Monkees, Davy Jones originated the role of the Artful Dodger in the Broadway musical "Oliver!", and he and other cast members appeared on one Ed Sullivan Show to sing several songs from the production, on February 9, 1964 - the same episode as the Beatles debut! Shortly after the Monkees TV series, another British musician, real name Davy Jones, wanted to avoid confusion with the one here and became famous under the name David Bowie.

I had the privilege of seeing the (then) surviving members in concert several years ago, backed up by some additional musicians. When it came time for them to play this song, Micky stated that ONLY Davy could possibly sing lead on this one, and through the magic of the Wayback Machine they played his vocals and sang along. For the last chorus Micky said, "You sing it!" and held his microphone out toward the audience. And sing it we did. Then, for that single night on that tour, Mike (who lived nearby) joined Micky, Peter and the backing musicians onstage for the last 4 songs. I am so glad I got to see that, as it will never be seen again.

Thanks for looking at these guys - they started out as a "put-together band" - they all had to audition for parts - mainly for a TV show - (inspired by the success of the Beatles) - so the "selected" members had to do this goofy show, and had some songs written for them by some good songwriters - esp. "Boyce & Hart" - but they eventually rebelled and b/c they were actually pretty decent musicians in their own right, had some pretty good songs... the videos back in the day were very "cheesy" and silly - (BTW, when you said "Brady Bunch" I had to laugh - b/c the lead singer - Davy Jones - actually appeared on an episode of that show!! lol)

The Monkees were a prefabricated band put together for TV by Don Kirschner and they were sometimes referred to as the "Prefab Four" as a take off of the Beatles nickname of "Fab Four". They were good, though originally, I believe studio musicians were used but they actually were pretty good musicians on their own. The two guys on this video on piano have both passed away. I loved their half hour tv show of they had as struggling musicians getting into all kinds of trouble, often slapstick humor and good music. I used to watch them all the time.

The monkees may have been the prefab 4, but they contributed so much to music, tv, movies, live shows and pop culture. Micky has one of the best pop rock voices. Mike is the reason we have MTV. Peter is responsible for getting jimi hendrix first big US tour. Davy was on the beatles first appearance on ed sullivan, performing songs from Oliver. Their movie Head was a cult classic, produced by Jack Nicholson and paid for easy rider to be filmed. First band to full stage audio and lighting on tour and st so many classic songs, written by them and others. The show was so funny and upbeat and anyone doubting their musical talent, listen to riu chiu, going down, no time, for petes sake, You might be the one, some of shellys blues, shades gray, plesant valley sunday, valerie, star collector, etc

Head was a very, very interesting movie. lol. If the Monkees were trying to demonstrate their frustrations with the present time and their careers, they certainly made a statement! And not in a bad way. It was just a completely different portrayal of the Monkees as they were seen on television and by the public. The soundtrack is very underrated as well! Either that or mostly unknown.
      It's a real must-see for any Monkee-maniac.

Neil Diamond wrote a couple songs for this show and the group. "I'm A Believer"; "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" ; and "Cracklin' Rosie" which he released as a hit himself.
