The short hand of The Monkees is that they were created for TV to capitalize on the popularity of The Beatles. Their early music was written by major industry songwriters and performed by studio musicians, but they provided the vocals. By the end of the first season, they were learning to play for themselves (two had had previous musical experience, the others had to catch up) and were playing their own concerts. They had to fight for the right to produce their own albums, though. By the time their show ended, they'd developed a fan base beyond the show and they continued performing on and off since then. Sadly as of December, only Mickey Dolenz (the drummer) still lives. The Shrek version was a cover done by Smash Mouth.

Because of their TV beginning, some never wanted to give them credit to being a real band. However, by the time their TV series ended the Monkeys included the Beatles, The Who and Led Zeppelin in their fan base and hung out writing with all 3.

Got to see the Monkees perform a couple times due to my mom and sisters being huge fans. Always gave a great show and kept the crowd entertained. People who think they are a fake band really don't know their history and what they developed into. Doesn't hurt when you got the likes of Neil Diamond helping to write your songs either.

A woman once told me she was at a Monkees concert, wearing one of their hats. She said she didn't know why, but she got excited and tossed her hat up on stage.
So Davey Jones picked up the hat and wore it the rest of the concert.
A few days later, she got on the internet, and checked out photos from concerts after that.
Davey was still wearing the hat!!!

The drummer is Mickey Dolenz and was first known for his part in the TV Series 'Circus Boy' 1956-58, where he played a young boy called 'Corky'.
The Monkees was the beginning of groups being put together for TV Shows in the 1960's, such as The Partridge Family (Shirley Jones, David Cassidy), where they continued and produced songs, albums and performed separate to the TV Show they were in. Some of those songs were performed in their shows. Great memories of the songs and the TV Show.

The Monkees were an attempt to capture the popularity of the Beatles on TV. In the video they aren't actually the musicians we hear, the "drummer" is signing, but the rest was recorded by studio musicians. The guitarist and keyboard player were both musicians, but still not trusted to play their own instruments for the show. The other two were hired because they were actors. Eventually the Monkees did become a real band, but their hits come from the period that Don Kirshner (who employed many of the great songwriters of the '60s, and provided songs for many of the 60's bands) was providing their music. When they split with him, he started providing songs for the cartoon band The Archies because they couldn't turn on him.
But during the run of the show they had a lot of great songs.

John Lennon told them they were like the Marx Brothers. Well, the writers seemed to borrow from every comedy bit they could think of from the past...one episode I saw recently, stole the entire plot, watered down for a half hour TV episode, from a Marx Brothers movie [originally a stage play] called Room Service from 1938.

The song was written by Neil Diamond, and Al Gorgoni (a session musician who played guitar on the track) came up with the guitar lick after the organ intro and the choruses before the next verse. I remember Neil Diamond performed it in a duet along with Linda Ronstadt as part of a medley on the Glen Campbell Show. I'm sure everyone who's seen Shrek knows Smash Mouth's cover.

All of us little tween girls watched the Monkees' TV show and had a crush on Davy Jones (the short guy with the tambourine) and/or Mickey Dolenz (the drummer who was singing lead on this song). Monkees were created for a TV show, but they showed so much more. Stephen Stills actually auditioned for a part, and was declined, so he told his friend, Peter Taulk to give it a try, and Peter got the part.

Many of the early Neil Diamond-written songs, particularly the ones written for the Monkees, had a heavy gospel feel - besides this one, the Monkees had "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You," and "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow," and on his own, Neil sang "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" which got featured in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.

A great band that started as actors on a tv show and their first couple alums used session musicians, like the Partridge Family. People were calling them out as being fake, so they started touring and playing their own instruments. If you ever get the chance, watch their documentary on UA-cam. Very interesting.

Billboard's review said it was "the cleverest exercise in original video programming to date. Davy Jones, who's not a musician (hence him being there with a tambourine and doing nothing else), was added to the band because apparently according to those days standards he was good looking. He's also one of the reasons David Bowie, who's real name was David Jones, called himself David Bowie, so to not get mistaken by Davy Jones. Hilariously, Davy Jones gave an interview a month or so ago saying that he might have been what David Bowie was to music if chance just had allowed it. Bowie was an amazing and creative musician, Jones was a placeholder to attract girls to buy The Monkees stuff, I don't know how the idea that he could have been in Bowie's place got into his head.

Future singing star Neil Diamond wrote this song. This was January 1967, song was was #1 for 7 weeks, the Monkees were a TV show about a rock band trying to make it, a fast paced comedy trying to match the Beatles Hard Days Night movie idea. The band was criticized for not being a real band, even though the kids loved them. and they took the challenge and became a touring band and took control of their recording sessions, played their own instruments. They always sang on the early records, but weren't allowed to choose the material or play instruments on their records The Shrek movie is what young reactors only have to latch onto for this song, then they discover it is not the original and are "shocked" [try not to wet your pants please lol]. Not your fault but the sad thing about mentioning Shrek is that this is the Monkees' biggest hit and was done decades before the Shrek movie, taking away the spotlight on the Monkees and the song, and focusing on Shrek this, Shrek that. Smash Mouth redid the song for the Shrek movie...big deal...it didn't go to number one for 7 weeks that time...but hit $#4. Everyone who did not grow up in the 1960's, the first word out of their mouth is "Shrek." Out of context for the reaction. Learn more about the Monkees and forget Shrek. At least you knew the Shrek version was not the original and a cover. Mike Nesmith, on guitar with that hat, recently passed away Dec. 10 2021.
