I grew up listening to the Monkees music & watching their show. They could act silly but they actually were decent musicians & singers. They had many hits such as "Last Train To Clarksville", "Valleri", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Steppin' Stone" etc. Two of their big hits "I'm A Believer" & "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" were written by Neil Diamond. Davy Jones was considered a teenage heart throb. Sadly he died in 2012 & later Peter Tork in 2019. Michael Nesmith passed away last year. Only 1 member is remaining now Micky Dolenz.

I became good friends with Davy when he lived in my local town where he died suddenly in 2012. Before his death, Davy was riding one of horses at local horse training park that day. I mentioned to Chod and Dee that one of my friends, Joe who owned local bar and grill persuaded Davy to sing this song with him during Saturday Nights' Karaoke. Few including me witnessed it with my friend, Joe and Davy singing Daydream Believer.

Yes THAT IS Davy Jones voice. He played the "Artful Dodger" in the Broadway musical "OLIVER" (based on the Charles Dickens Victorian era book "OLIVER TWIST") and sang in the show. The cast of "Oliver" was on the same show the night the BEATLES had their FIRST performance in the U.S. on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW. Davy was watching them perform from the wings of the stage and he said later that watching the Beatles made him want to be in a rock group. Which eventually happened with the Monkees. Davy was the only Monkee that was from England, the rest were all American guys. Peter Tork (the blonde playing the piano, who also played guitar), MIKE NESMITH ( playing guitar here, AND whose MOTHER invented the "White Out" which was used to correct errors when writing.), and Mickey Dolenz (on tambourine who was their drummer) Mickey was a child star in the 1950s when I was also a child, and played the little boy in the 1956 Saturday morning TV series "CIRCUS BOY" when he was 11 years old, playing "CORKY." For that series his stage name was "MICKEY BRADDOCK. SADLY, DAVY JONES passed away in 2012, PETER TORK passed in 2019 and MIKE NESMITH passed at the end on 2021. So, MICKEY DOLENZ is the ONLY member of the Monkees that is still with us. He is 77 now. There is plenty more information on the MONKEES, how they were thrown together for a TV SHOW in 1966 -- 1968 which was VERY POPULAR.

The Beatles were known as the "Fab Four".... when they put the Monkees together, they were called the "Pre-Fab Four". Funny thing... they toured the US, and their opening act was Jimi Hendrix!! Crowds that followed the Monkees were less than kind to Jimi, but the guys in the band absolutely LOVED him!!

  • @vernhoke7730

The Monkees were far from 1 hit wonders. They put the group together for a sketch comedy show about 4 musicians who get into all kinds of trouble while trying to hit it big.
Most of the songs were written by other people but they sang them.
This song is just one of their hits along with "Last Train to Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and a couple more that escape me.

    Chod & Dee
I became good friends with David "Davy" Jones years before his sad sudden death back on Feb. 29, 2012. I met him through mutual friends who knew him long time. He used to visit his friend, Basil from his horse jocking days before entertainment. His friend, Basil used to live in local area near my town in Florida. Davy usually stops by to see him and friends of mine. One of my other friends used to own bar and grill business in town. At the restaurant, Saturday Nights were Karaoke Nights, where locals can sing their favorite songs. One Saturday night, my friend, owner, Joe somehow persuaded Davy to sing this song, Daydream Believer with him. Few locals including me witnessed that special night when Monkee singing with our own that night! Too bad that there were no video apps on the phones back then...... But I have my memories.

Those pants are called bell bottoms which were based off the U.S. Navy uniform which featured bell bottom pants, which for the Navy had flap in the front instead of a zipper, which was fastened using 13 buttons. I first wore bell bottoms while serving in the Navy from 1967 to 1971. The Monkees had many many hits.

The Monkees were a great fun band with many good songs. They were put together to combat the UK invasion especially Beatles domination of music at the the time. They were supported by several song writers at the time but later began to write and sing their own material. Their TV show always featured a couple songs and this is from the TV show. As are many of the Monkee song videos from that time. If you wonder where the drummer is well Mickey is there in the green top, but often in these TV cuts he would be goofing around. The question about the Monkees was are they a TV show about a band or a band with a TV show or neither? But I liked them.

Davy Jones lived about 1.5 miles from where I was born in Gorton, Manchester UK. He went to my Dad's primary school. The Monkees were so popular here in Britain too. Davy would sometimes be seen taking a walk when he was visiting family in his favourite park, Debdale. People would wave but leave him alone. He was a nice bloke/guy.

Funny you say they had been playing together for years. They were thrown together as a pretend band for a sitcom. Networks were trying to tap into a Beatles-like theme for the comedy show. Some of the Monkees didn't even know how to play their instruments when the show first started. MTV did a Monkees marathon of their TV shows in the 80s or 90s and it kind of relaunched interest in the band. The Monkees eventually became a real band and had some good success with multiple hit songs. I think only the drummer (Micky Dolenz) is still alive.

For those who may be unaware, the musicians in The Wrecking Crew were THE session players in Los Angeles who performed on most all of the top American Pop-Rock songs in the 60s; from The Beach Boys to Sinatra to Sonny and Cher, and yes, the Monkeys. A made for TV group whose songs have actually aged pretty well. That is Davey Jones voice. His background was in musical theater, I believe he was most famous for playing the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver Twist before The Monkees. They were totally a production of the LA songwriting and studio band system. Funny that you mention Austin Powers, which is a total riff/parody of this period.

Great song and loved your reaction!
They performed a lot of songs written by some great writers. The two true musicians in the band were Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork but they didn't get along AT ALL.
Davey and Mickey did learn how to play and took the Monkees on the road.
Nesmith (Papa Nez) did not tour with the Monkees as he had his own band, touring and commitments.
He did join Mickey Dolenz and the supporting band this year and tragically passed away before the end of the tour.
Michael Nesmith was crazy talented with a sense of humor that earned him a GRAMMY for the first Video honored with one.
He had a series titled Animal Parts that he took the Best of... and created Elephant Parts.
    And voila...GRAMMY!

The Monkees sound is that of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Boyce and Hart wrote and recorded "Last Train to Clarksville" and "The Theme to the Monkees" television show. The members of the Monkees merely sang over the Boyce and Hart recordings. They produced music for the show and appeared as themselves on I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and the Flying Nun. They were great song writers, quite popular at the time, having wrote the hit "Come a Little Bit Closer" for Jay and the Americans and "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" for Paul Revere and the Raiders (also recorded by the Monkees). They had several of their own hits including, "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" and "Alice Long". In the seventies they formed a band with Davy and Mickey called "Dolenz, Jones, Boyce, and Hart". They were the sound of the Monkees. If you're looking for old songs to react to, try "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight". It was a huge hit for them in 1968.

you folks do know the monkees were invented to be a childrens TV show. They were created to look like the beatles (4 guy boy band, haircuts, etc). None of them played an instrument until 'later' when two of them took 'lessons' presumably to hold something in their hands. You're starting to scrape the bottom of this barrel with this stuff but you know, enjoy

Only one of them is left, two passed fairly recently...they had a TV show back in the 60s and was put together as a group for that show. Davy (the British guy singing) was already a teen heartthrob with the girls back then so he was already popular, the others we hadn't heard of. Anyway, the show is on YT if you want to check out some episodes, it was corny as you can see but they really could sing and play. Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote a few songs for them and also had some hits of their own (I wonder what she's doing tonite) is their biggest hit. They have gotten together in reunion tours as well...they were very popular before the Partridge Family was on TV and several of those groups back then.

BEING 65 YEARS OLD THIS TRULY JUST REMINDS ME OF MY CHILDHOOD IN THE '60S AND SATURDAY MORNINGS WATCHING THE MONKEES' TV SHOW!!!
IT WAS A GREAT FUN SHOW AND AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE WAY THEY CLOWN AROUND AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO THAT IT WAS THE PERFECT KIND OF HUMOR FOR KIDS!!
I WOULD SAY THE MONKEE'S MUSIC WAS PROBABLY BEST CLASSIFIED AS BUBBLE GUM FOR THE MOST PART!! AT LEAST THIS PARTICULAR SONG BUT THEY DO HAVE SOME SONGS THAT WOULD DEFINITELY BE CLASSIFIED AS ROCK!!

Davy was watching this with his daughters and they asked how come he was dancing like Axl Rose. He just laughed and told them he got his moves from me.

According to singer Davy Jones he admitted in an interview his vocals where so powerful during this video because he was pissed off as they had to redo many takes several times lol I love the playful interaction at the end. The band was not always the best of buds but it looks like at least 3 of them where having a great time

I have very mixed feeling for the Monkees. When I was about 10/12, the Monkees TV show hit the screens, and we teeny boppers went nuts. You are wrong about these guys coming up together, Chod. This was a totally made up, put together group - Davey and Mickey were child actors who didn't even play instruments. Mike and Peter were experienced and talented musicians. However, at least in the beginning, they weren't allowed to play, though they did sing. All the songs were also written by professionals. This doesn't mean they weren't any good. They made some good music and we enjoyed the TV show (although looking it now it seems totally lame!!) You should look for it Dee, you may like it, it's goofy and slapstick. I bet somewhere, some oldie's channel still plays it.
Like many girls, I had a MASSIVE crush on Davey Jones and had his and the other Monkees posters plastered like wallpaper on my bedroom walls. I have read his biography, and by all accounts he was a very nice man - RIP.
What kills me now, is knowing that they were contemporaries with another reluctant "teeny bopper" band across the pond - the Small Faces! So while I was pining over a "fake"band, if I had known, I could have been listening to a truly great, talented R&B/soul/pop band. AND instead of Davey, like the British boppers, I would have had Steve Marriott's posters on my wall! Both Davey and Steve were British (of course), tiny, adorable, and both were child actors who started out playing the Artful Dodger in the London stage production of "Oliver", though Steve was chosen to sing the dodger's songs on the official soundtrack album. Davey had a very nice voice, but Steve - OMG - his voice is legendary and could rip your heart out! We Americans were gypped by the fact we never got to hear the Small Faces. Here is a link of Steve singing "You've really got a hold on me" and compare it to the monkees - tell me if I'm wrong... Thank you for featuring this, I loved the nostalgia of my childhood - Monkees were great then.

Oh, by the way - Steve was only 18 when this was recorded, Kenney (drummer) 17, Ronnie (bass) was 19 and Mac (keys) 20! Each member was extremely talented on their own, but when together - brilliant! And this "boy band" did come up together. Steve, Ronnie & Kenney were best friends who go together to form a band. I believe all the Monkees were in their 20's and had never met before they were each hired through auditions.

@gigi v Well Gigi, perhaps "fake" is a little too harsh a word. You must admit though that they were a "manufactured band" - perceived by TV executives, chosen among other actors/musicians auditioning for the parts, having their songs written for them and studio musicians playing the instruments - IN THE BEGINNING. Later, they rebelled and insisted on playing themselves, probably when in concert too. I said I was a fan and that they had some good songs - they were certainly a phenomenon at the time - I remember it well. Perhaps I wouldn't have appreciated the Small Faces then like I do now. My taste has matured and as I recall some of my other favorites at that age were "Sugar ,Sugar" by the Archies and "The Eggplant Who Ate Chicago", LOL!!!
As for the Small Faces, I don't know if you grew up in the US, but my first memories of hearing them was in I believe 1967/68 when Itchicoo Park made the US charts. This song was NOT really indicative of who they were, and sadly the broke up the following year due to the fact that Steve couldn't bear being a "teen Idol" anymore.
