This is my favorite format of CFB video. I wasn't playing magic back when Mashi, Cheon, LSV, etc were doing these originally and am so happy to see these back! Hopefully you'll start streaming card prices in a banner again so we can look back and cry about $10 rares skyrocketing in price.
I love coming back to this video. Illusions + donate changed my life. I put that together in some janky UB deck, started winning local events which paid for better cards and decks which eventually led to playing poker for a living. It's wild to think about how it all traces back to that one thing.
Beyond stoked with the choice for #1. That was the first Vintage deck I ever played and it holds a special place in my heart. And getting the sign off on it from Finkel himself? Bliss.
Missed ones that should have been at least honorable mentions, probably in the top 8 somewhere: Prosperity/Cadaverous Bloom Flash/Protean Hulk Counterbalance/Sensei's Divining Top Sword of the Meek/Thopter Foundry
Im soooo suprised that tog wasn't on the list bc finkle was on that bacc in the day somewhere i have meddling mages signed by finkle and shadowmage infiltrators signed by pikula 🤣 they were both so amused by doing that for me too
@@amacuro few different ways to do it but originally you just wanted to upheaval with 9/10 lands in play 6 for e Upheaval then float the rest in order to cast psychatog which let you attacc the next turn....unless you were playing the red decc at that time that had reccless charge to grant it haste.....also another version ysed the rules of the time period and faceless butcher to remove the tog from play then once upheaval resolved returned the tog to play but since you controlled it prior you could attac the turn you"went off"

@@amacuro You bounce everything, but you make sure you have enough mana to play the tog. Then next turn you can attack and remove your entire graveyard to attack for lethal :)
I've watched Feline Longmore play high tide many times and she is amazing with that deck. It would be super stressful for me to pilot that deck, but she makes it look like child's play.

With you all going vintage and legacy I'm very surprised this wasn't in the top 10. Stifle - Phyrexian Dreadnought combo haunted my early legacy days. 2 mana 12/12 trample turn 1.
My guesses: 1. Channel + Fireball. I mean, how can it not be the number one? 2. Illusions of Grandeur + Donate 3. Cat combo 4. Cadaverous Bloom + Squandered Resources. Though I do guess that it might be counted as a three card combo due to Prosperoty being such a key piece.

As soon as hexmage was spoiled everyone knew that combo. I traded for one at the zendikar prerelease when it was junk and sold it for 40 bucks to get Christmas presents later that year.

Jonny Magic is great and all but I wish you got a player who was around in 94 who could have talked more about the old school combos, both the ones in the list and the ones that didn't make the list like Icy Manipulator/Royal Assassin and it's Dark counterpart Merfolk Assassin/War Barge, Ali From Cairo + Spectral Cloak, Rukh Egg + Diamond Valley, Time Walk + Fork, Wheel Of Fortune/Timetwister + Underworld Dreams, etc.
Gravity's Ghetto Mods. Exactly. He competed as a junior in PT NY 1, which was in 96. That’s years after 1994 and he was a kid so it’s unlikely he has power nine as a grade schooler in 1994. Even in the video he admits that the old skool is before his time. He knows of Type 1 and Type 2, but he didn’t play seriously before the types were established back when there was only competitive constructed. I remember PT NY 1. Many of my friends from LA went to NY and one even top 8-ed it and got his deck made into a commemorative pre-con deck.

Gravity's Ghetto Mods. That’s an arrogant thing to say. Google “pro tour New York box set”. I’ve owned this set four times and I had all of the Worlds decks as well. I was known in LA for having all of the decks sleeved for play. Loconto had the blue white control, Lindback the Necro, Poulter with Ehrnam/Willow Geddon, Baxter’s aggro, plus my two fave players back then Hammer and Bertrand Lestree who should have won the first Worlds. The box set came with a magazine-like insert that resembles what later would become The Duelist Sideboard insert...it had a pic of Finkel in the Junior division I believe. And no, he’s not the only “name” from back then.
Gotta fix the audio setup, having three people talk into a single mic in a room is really bad, so much talking over each other and echo. Especially when they aren't that used to the format and thus tend to try to talk at the same time
Doesn't sound that amazing to me. Couldn't you just stay at 3-4 cards and avoid the damage? Wouldn't something like The Rack + Bottomless Pit or Black Vise + Winter Orb be better?
By the old rules, Mirror Universe dies to Shatter and Disenchant before it's activation resolves. Win of choice? Very sketchy, I say. Also, die on turn 2 to Mono-Black? Let's discuss again what the most powerful color in magic is?
ok i pushed pause splinter twin/deceiver exarch stoneforge mystic/batterskull brainstorm/fetchland a lot of other options but i'll go with scapeshift/valakut because it's so different and wins on the spot a lot wiht minimal set up outside of playing a ramp strategy

Was expecting psychatog + upheaval as one of the more old-school combos, but turns out there are way more old-school combos I wasn't aware of!
flash/hulk should have been top 3 100%.

I'm pretty certain that the combo at #1 is Donate on your own Birds of Paradise, then Lightning Bolt the Bird, yelling "Bolt the Birds!"

BaddeJimme yep. Vise Rack is a wombo. Vice plus Wheel/twister or Balance/Mind Twist plus The Rack are good synergy combos.
