It really is just fair Mind Sculptor. 1 mana more, no Fateseal, Loyalty up 2 because it gets +1 not +2 and it costs 1 more. Bounce costs more so it can't defend itself so easily. Ult still wins the game but it's not impossible to beat.
After reading the last story article (the actual one, not the alternate endings) I’m not sure if Jace feels the same way towards Lilliana anymore. Btw, I seriously can’t wait for Dominaria. Between it and My Hero Academia April’s gonna be a good month.
Saffron, I love your passion for mtg and the manner in which you commentate is very strategic and thoughtful. I think it makes me commatate more accutatle and effectively in my everyday life. Keep rockin' it as you are a great rock for others to see :)
Honestly Seth, I have seen you keep some terrible hands lately, but a 6 lander against hyper-aggro? Come on man, just last week I watched you dominate some literal pro players in the modern super league. We have all seen you play really well, but sometimes man, I want to pull out my hair.
Seth what do you think about the card locket of yesterdays, it's a one generic mana artifact with each spell in your hand costs one less for each card the graveyard with the same name. And it's legal in modern
11:30 sideboarding mistake, a lot of valakut lists play pia and kiran nalaar or gaea's revenge in the sideboard, so you want to leave 1-2 wraths against them as outs. especially with all these jaces to find them or put them away as necessary.
Yay! Mill! I mean, I'm scarred from mill, but I have grown my own fondness of it :) Isn't Sphinx's tutelage super awkward when it comes to the flavor of the deck? I mean, this is a Jace deck, and our win con is the card with Alhammerret on it...
The irony of this deck is that you could replace the win conditions with counterspells and you'd still win. Jace changed from an engine for the win condition into the win condition itself, so much that you don't even need one anymore.
I had a Jace tribal commander deck after Ixalan came out. It was real fun won around 90% of the 15 + games I played with it. It was basically a mono blue control deck. I was even able to ult. Jace, the mindscupter 3 times and Jace, telepath unbound 4 times in a single game. I decontructed it when I wasn't having anymore fun with it, because the games were to consistent. What I learned from those games is War Tax is annoying when you have multiple mana doublers in play.
Ad Nauseam usually runs 3-4 Pacts of Negation, which means that any attempt at a removal spell on the Maniac usually fails. It's not an out 99% of the time, so it was a bit counter-intuitive here.
I thought that there was a legend type rule for plainswalkers, and you could only have one plainswalker of one type out at once, but you had JTMS and Jace Memory Adept out at the same time. Am I missing something?
With the legendary planeswalker thing you can only have one of *each specific planeswalker* on the battlefield at the same time (for example, you can't have to Jace Beleren or two Jace, the Mind Sculptor). On the other hand, you can have any number of planeswalker of the same type (so Jace Beleren and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are fine).
Why is that? Path answers one of their best win conditions, and in conjunction with leyline locks them out. Stony silence does stop pentad prism and lotus bloom, but they can just go off at instant speed. Also, PTE is more efficient being 1 mana less and instant speed. Am I missing something?
The Clashing Legend Usually when they are going off they draw their whole deck and don't just cast the lab man. So when you try to path it they can just pact it.
Andre Freitas Yes, as of right now. You have to target the player and redirect to the planeswalker. If you can't target the player, you can't redirect.
Depending on the effect. Direct effect like Dreadbore bypasses leyline. Damage that uses the words, "~ deals x damage to each opponent," bypasses leyline.
neoepochx I don’t believe there was a rules change, but there are some cards that specifically state that you can target a player, creature, or planeswalker.
I'm still floored that Seth decided to brainstorm jace instead of + him at 10 minutes when his opponent was out of cards. It seems like an incredible risk to take, and just "hope" they don't draw something good, you could eliminate that possibility by ensuring they draw nothing good.
Is there a way that I can send/request for a deck to be featured on against the odds? I have one in mind that I came up with and have used for a long time, and wanted to know what your take would be on it and see how it did.
I’ve noticed you play spells prior to playing a land. I mean in some cases that’s good but you got Spell Pierced which wouldn’t have happened if you has the Field of Ruin out
I wonder if Azorius superfriends would be a valid strategy since almost every really good PW is Blue or White. Jaces, the Gideons, Elspeths, etc... sounds juicy.
FuryKevin They changed the rule to be the same as the Legendary rule ( and made planeswalker legendary) as of Ixalan. So you can have how many Jace planeswalker you want as long as they have different names ( like you can with Thalias for example)
Why didn't the Zoo player protect his stomping ground by casting Boros Charm for permanent indestructible? He'd have gotten a free land out of the exchange and kept his fixing up
Vraska tribal! Please 😢
Polar Hexx Please!!
Not enough vraskas. 3, and NO ONE wants planeswalker deck vraska
Shachar Schwartz Tagari "I can dream Herald!" Seriously though, we need like 30 more Vraskas. I NEED THEM!
Polar Hexx yeah vraska is great. Hope we get one in the ravnica i want wotc to give us this fall
you got pinned! thats a sign...
"Even if our opponent bolts our Jace, we have 3 more in hand." -SaffronOlive
It's a foolproof strategy!
*Fateseal*
"We'll leave it on top"
*Opponent scoops*
This sums up my feelings on JtMS
That death's shadow play was insane
Next level Kolaghan's Command.
Ozan Homer “Fuels Delirium”
Or next level delirium play
death shadow player making one of those mistakes an aggro player would make...
The title of the video should have used the font 'Beleren.'
Kyle Hart it copyrighted
That would've been awesome lmao
Beleren is only usable by Wizards
i think unraveler of secrets is pretty underrated. definitely not the mindsculptor but pretty awesome in its own right.
It really is just fair Mind Sculptor. 1 mana more, no Fateseal, Loyalty up 2 because it gets +1 not +2 and it costs 1 more. Bounce costs more so it can't defend itself so easily. Ult still wins the game but it's not impossible to beat.
He my favorite Planeswalker, he's so awesome!
41:15 "Good God"
Correct on both counts, Seth!
Mr. Strider but not for «My god!» part =)
The flavour for the win condition in a jace deck being sphinx's tutelage makes the Vorthos in me happy
Match 1 starts at 8:40
Match 2 starts at 16:10
Match 3 starts at 21:48
Match 4 starts at 29:19
Match 5 starts at 34:32
Match 6 starts at 42:01
>5 minutes on match 2
Wew
Jace, Jace, Jace
Jace, Jace, Jace,
Ja-ce all the way
Oh what fun It is to play
Six Jace's in one day HEY!
This gotta become a song, idk how, but it Has to!
Jace the Mind Sculptor better than all,
Jace - The -Mind-Sculptor
Robert Collins Jace...is...MORE THAN A FISH
Jace is MORE THAN A MAN
Death will rise
From the tides!
I’m going to go sell my kidneys and a lung so that I can try out this deck
there's a lot of blue mana symbols in those jace cards, seems like you could make a jace devotion deck
mjbentley100 mono jace devotion
Mono Jace Devotion, Magic the way Richard Garfield truly intended it.
I didn't know I needed this in my life until now
Should have included some number of Liliana and some number of Vraska and called the deck Love Triangle.
Stephen Lofton vraska all the way.
It's not a love triangle if Vraska and Liliana don't really care about each other
Shawn Diaz this is the Internet were talking about
Liliana > Vraska
After reading the last story article (the actual one, not the alternate endings) I’m not sure if Jace feels the same way towards Lilliana anymore.
Btw, I seriously can’t wait for Dominaria. Between it and My Hero Academia April’s gonna be a good month.

Boycott his videos he keeps calling himself a saffron olive
no. His full name is : "SethBetterKnownAsSaffronOlive"
@AHunter ...actually it's: "SethProoobablyBetterKnownAsSaffronOlive"
I've been watching your vids as of late. I gotta say, I love your charisma as you are playing out the games.
Thanks!
DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME RICKY BOBBY!
So I don't care for modern at all but I saw the title and had to check it out. This was one of the most entertaining MTG videos I've ever seen.
This is some of the most fun magic I have ever watched
The best part of this video is how excited Seth gets over his Jaces.
I love hearing Saffron Olive's cries of anguish when he sees his opponent's side tech.
Does anybody else just skip the deck tech to make the rest of the video a surprise?
No? Just me...
Andrew Pelletier you are not alone
Ian McAbee I am here with you.
nah I always skip it...
I watch it to see the win con for the jankier decks
Andrew Pelletier Usually I do too but this time I actually watched it cuz I just HAD to see how crazy this deck's build was😆
It had to happen
Every time Seth says “Bottom bottom” when scrying I remember the old DeStorm Rubik’s cube rap.
This is my favorite deck I've seen in my entire life.
Could you play painter's servant with that sphinx tutelage ?
No ,because of the lands clause on tutelage. "If they're both nonland cards that share a color"
Yeah, it would help a little (making a non-lands a re-trigger), but it wouldn't just mill the entire library.
Seth what do you think about the card locket of yesterdays, it's a one generic mana artifact with each spell in your hand costs one less for each card the graveyard with the same name. And it's legal in modern
600 out of those 997 are those 4 jaces, Damn
another 100 is halo lol
another 200 are Celestial Collonades.
Good god I hope they're reprinted soon.
Acuyuye jace makes modern less diverse and affordable
If you check the website Jace is listed at $70. So the deck should cost $1100
I wouldn't be surprised if Collonade is in 25th Masters, not sure about Halo.
who is doing all the artwork for the thumbnails. they are great
The flavor win that the Jace Tribal deck uses the teachings of Alhameret to end your opponents.
42:12 omega brain fart on the opponent
Indra Sutanto I had to rewind, had me going wait what?
Would one say OMEGALUL?
I laughed for a good couple minutes at that honestly
To vote for next week's Against the Odds, head over to the article on the side: www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/against-the-odds-jace-tribal-modern
this one was sweet. on game 1 vs mardu tho i wondered why you didnt just path the pyromancer before your opponent flooded the board with tokens
10:05 No! They're out of cards! You +2 them until the end of time!
I love how giddy seth sounds when he shows you sphinx's tutelage.
Sweet deck! Gotta love those Seth cackles.
Stupid fun. Still waiting to see a Chandra tribal deck Seth. :)
11:30 sideboarding mistake, a lot of valakut lists play pia and kiran nalaar or gaea's revenge in the sideboard, so you want to leave 1-2 wraths against them as outs. especially with all these jaces to find them or put them away as necessary.
No love for Jace, Living Guildpact? Hahahaha, fun video!
I think I'm in love with the deck...
So are you doing "4-ability" walker tribal next?!
Yay! Mill! I mean, I'm scarred from mill, but I have grown my own fondness of it :)
Isn't Sphinx's tutelage super awkward when it comes to the flavor of the deck? I mean, this is a Jace deck, and our win con is the card with Alhammerret on it...
Jack Pabich Alhammerret was his teacher. If anything it makes the deck more on theme by having the teachings of his mentor as the back up win con.
That first game, going brainstorm mode over fatesealing him when he's on 0 cards in hand CmonBruh! Great video still just had to mention it :P
The irony of this deck is that you could replace the win conditions with counterspells and you'd still win.
Jace changed from an engine for the win condition into the win condition itself, so much that you don't even need one anymore.
A jace's tutelage deck sounds like it might work. Or miracles with tutelage. I gotta try that.
I wanna see that Ajani tribal. Ajani vengeant is one of my favorite walkers.
40:22 would it have been a good idea to path your own jace in response to the dreadbore?
It might have been.
If their out on ad nauseum is lab maniac, why don't you hold up path?
Ad Nauseam usually runs 3-4 Pacts of Negation, which means that any attempt at a removal spell on the Maniac usually fails. It's not an out 99% of the time, so it was a bit counter-intuitive here.
Nicol Bolas Tron...WITH ACTUAL TRON plus Oath of Nissa! I really want this to happen.
This is what everybody has been waiting for
Love the "its not a phase mom" Jace inclusion
We need a JTMS t-shirt Seth. I could definitely wear that to the next gp we go to.
Ahh, I see, I just realized that Ixalan changed the rule for how plainswalkers work and removed the planeswalker uniqueness rule
thank you
This looks like misery incarnate
Counter argument: Lantern.
Face Octopus lanterns fine if you play an equivalent of food chain in modern
True. Playing this deck against any of the current tier 1 decks feels like misery
Against Ad Nauseam, Stony Silence is better than Path to Exile.
Figures you do this after the unbanning of all mighty Jace and the thumbnail is on point
Literally every game of commander with my friends. Except the fanfic.
...I keep that for myself.
Can you update this? :D just getting back into the game would like to either build this or a UB version
Love the flavor win of Jace using the Sphinx's tutilidge to win :D
Why not hold up path against possible lab maniac earlier (in ad nause game)?
Face Octopus If ad naseum goes off with maniac, they most likely will have pact of negation in multiples in hand, making most removal futile
Sphinx's Tutelage totally targets an opponent, im not sure why you thought leyline would not stop
it
This is quality content. Subbed.
Is sphere of safety really better than gohstly prison?
sphinx’s tutelage is such a on theme flavor finisher too
32:35 PASS?! you have a spreading seas for the inkmoth!
field, still, card draw
I was hoping cunning castaway would be here If only for flavour
Joel Johnson to quote "we don't serve your kind here"
Louise Drake lol
He's okay in fog mill and...walls decks I guess
This needs a stream night. Do it do it!!
Does leyline still protects planeswalkers?
Andre Freitas Yes, as of right now. You have to target the player and redirect to the planeswalker. If you can't target the player, you can't redirect.
Depending on the effect. Direct effect like Dreadbore bypasses leyline. Damage that uses the words, "~ deals x damage to each opponent," bypasses leyline.
TranSlayer thanks. Now i got It :)
Michael Chronister I thought they changed the rule so that you could target PWs directly? Is this just a MTGO thing?
neoepochx I don’t believe there was a rules change, but there are some cards that specifically state that you can target a player, creature, or planeswalker.
Alexander Fransen send it in the comments or email him. Could you paste it here?
You can email (saffronolive@mtggoldfish.com) or send a link.
I’ve noticed you play spells prior to playing a land. I mean in some cases that’s good but you got Spell Pierced which wouldn’t have happened if you has the Field of Ruin out
42:08 for the greatest punt in modern?
sphinx's tutelage is such a flavorful win con in a jace deck
Some of the jaces got left out :( :( :(
Ohhh looks just like my enduring ideal deck but with Jace's!
Hmmm you know what my deck was missing, too, was card draw....Imma have to think about this!
What a cool deck!
I wonder if Azorius superfriends would be a valid strategy since almost every really good PW is Blue or White. Jaces, the Gideons, Elspeths, etc... sounds juicy.
I can only imagine how fkin giddy you were to play this deck. All the draws
It triggers me when people have 2 fetchlands opening hand, refuse to play them, then are astonished at how they could've drawn 4 lands in a row.
26:51 why not take out timely and put in stony?
Yeah, probably should have.
You should recreate this with the jace that makes you win when you draw your deck
temporal mastery seems pretty good in this deck
48:37 but they had a Verdant Catacombs...
SETH IT IS THE 3RD TIME THIS WEEK THAT I'M LATE FOR SCHOOL CAUSE I WAKE UP AND START WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS PLEASE STOP OK
Sorry!
Titanshift really gets mocked by every deck you play.
Why is there not one chasm skulker is in this deck?
Being the only real creature it would likely just die all the time to our opponent's otherwise dead removal.
Just because it didn’t come up after you said it but Sphinx’s Tutelage targets an opponent.
Can you do Eye of the Storm for an against the odds?
That's a good idea!
+MTGGoldfish and the best part even if its bad it'll still be a lot of fun!
Privileged position seems insane in this deck though
PAINTER SERVANT!!! YOU NEED PAINTER SERVANT!!! Milling combo from legacy to modern XD
Can't there only be one Jace out at a time due to the planeswalker rule?
FuryKevin They changed the rule to be the same as the Legendary rule ( and made planeswalker legendary) as of Ixalan. So you can have how many Jace planeswalker you want as long as they have different names ( like you can with Thalias for example)
Wow, sweet!
How is ANY deck that runs JtMS going “Against the Odds”?
Surprised saffron olive didn't find a way to fit panharmonicon into this deck
We don't really have many ways to trigger it :(
How does Seth keep beating Affinity?
42:28 Omg I died, poor opponent xD
Why didn't the Zoo player protect his stomping ground by casting Boros Charm for permanent indestructible? He'd have gotten a free land out of the exchange and kept his fixing up
You should do a Chandra tribal and have the two decks square off.
We'll probably play Chandra tribal at some point. The problem is it will very likely be a Free Win Red style deck with more Chandras.
This is the funniest against the odds deck ever.
The 4c zoo from G2 looked spicyy
