The reviewer of the album in the British music paper described LZ as “ quintessential doyens of the kamikaze dizzbuster”. I still don’t know what that means but it’s so cool who cares!!
Whoever was recording with Jimmy lost the original guitar track in the beginning. Jimmy said he heard him recording over it while he was recording another part,he could hear the intro guitar,the original sounded really fat,they had recorded it in a different studio,so ge knew he couldn't get it back to its original state,so he gathered what was left of it,and then he had to play around with it,to get it to sound as it does, I believe the guy was fired on spot. By the way that was on the Rover

As a native NYer.....another interesting cover sleeve fact, since Dev mentioned "symmetry," there is another floor level in the actual building at 96-98 St. Mark's Place. That floor was edited-out to make the cover square-shaped. Yes, Custard Pie is very raunchy, and great. Thanks for reacting to album art....most reactors don't, and it's so important to the overall impact and personality of the album.

John Paul jones was considering leaving in 1973 because he had a family and the band had a grueling work schedule from 1968-1973 either touring or recording without many extended breaks. Jones was also not the only member who felt that way. Because of this, the band for the rest of their career alternated between recording year and touring year .
Absolutely, yes. He’d hardly seen his 3? 4? children growing up. Zep altered their 1975 and 1977 tour schedules to allow JPJ time at home when school was out.
Robert had surgery to remove nodules on his vocal chords in 1974, by the time the band reconvene’s to record PG, Robert’s voice is quite raspy as you can hear on Kashmir ,which I’m good with btw. I believe the change in Robert’s voice was due to smoking, cocaine, drinking and straining his voice to do 3 hour shows and finally the surgery. Robert quit drugs in 77 after Karac’s death, he had a talk with himself, saying what are you doing STOP & so he did, he quit smoking in ‘02. His voice has changed many times over his 60 year career & he adjusts just fine. Robert is a true lover of music , he travels & explores to bring so much diversity in his music. Loved Zeppelin right from the start and still do. Feel the same way about Robert’s solo projects. …& yes PG is my favorite I also love Presence and ITTOD. So many great deep cuts on all those albums. Dev, you have great hearing to spot the rasp and gravelly aspect of Plant’s voice here. It’s changed for ever between recording HOTH in Spring 1972 and PG in Winter 1973/4. This difference is clear when you compare the vocals on Custard Pie and The Rover( or The Hoover). The change( deterioration) in his voice was painfully obvious to anyone watching their live shows in 1975, especially me as I had seen Zep live in 1971 and 1973 and Robert struggled badly with songs like Rock n Roll or Over The Hills and Far Away. He was ok ( mostly) on songs actually recorded for PG as they represented where his voice was at , not where it had been in the earlier years/albums. On stage, the sound system papered over the ( literally) cracks with multi tracking and echoes and “ high frequency “ boosting” to get to where he used to be able to reach naturally. You should react to some 1975 bootlegs if possible sometime. Having said all that, I absolutely love almost everything on this album, particularly The Rover and know for sure a lot of Zepheads think likewise. Thank you once again for the superb quality of your work here guys. Glad Dev is feeling better. Best wishes from England 🏴.
Another interesting fact regarding the apartment building on the album cover: The first album that Jeff Buckley ever owned was Physical Graffiti. Literally just doors away, on the same street (St. Marks), was a cafe called Sin-e (Shh-nay), during the early ‘90s. It was at this cafe that Jeff cut his teeth as a solo performer, appearing every Monday night. Quickly, he developed major hype in New York’s Lower East Side, leading to his signing to Columbia Records and his first commercial release: a four song EP called, Live at Sin-e; which was expanded into a double album (Legacy Edition) for its 10th anniversary in 2003. On the Legacy Edition is an incredible version of one of the lesser known songs off Physical Graffiti: Night Flight. When you get to that song in your reactions, please consider playing Jeff’s version from the aforementioned album. It is phenomenal.
Both songs are incredible, but “the rover” is in my top 10 zeppelin songs all time. One major reason is the bridge that starts at 19:56 in your reaction… probably one of the best bridges, up there with “carouselmbra” and “when the levee breaks”
Nice reaction from you both. I was 15 in 1969 when both Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II were released. The impact of that first album was so meaningful to me. I was familiar with other British Blues bands like John Mayall and in fact saw Cream in 1968 but this was really different. I did not track much with Led Zeppelin after Houses of the Holy, I really was not a big fan at that point but that has changed over the years. Thanks for your approach to sharing your favorite music. I am a fan.

Right on re the outro! On the rare occasions i hear this on the radio, i tense up at the end, cos i wait for the damn dj to start talking right before the grittiest part of the outro takes place (you know what im talkin about, lol!) cant wait for them to hear IMTOD!

Jimmy repeats the same riff 5 times and then the overdub of Jimmy playing the same riff but higher… It can be really cool when a track fades out while the intensity of the song is actually increasing. Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (three different ones)” is my favorite example… David Gilmour’s solo is an inferno still growing bigger, but it’s getting farther away.
The day this album was released in Australia I went my mate's place to hear it on his big hi-fi system. On the fourth side visitors arrived and asked we started the whole album again. That happened four times, so I got to hear it a lot that night. One song, The Rover, I had heard before. Right back in February 1972 it was played in Sydney as part of the Whole Lotta Love medley.
I bought this album on release day in February 1975 and stopped off at a mates house on my way home for a similar reason. His parents were musical and had a huge proper hifi system with speakers like dustbins. They actually came home halfway through “ In My Time Of Dying” and his Dad said “ wow, that’s quite powerful stuff!!”.
Can never pick a favourite from this album. Normally just play the whole thing. Actually can't just stop at the first 2 songs so off to listen to the rest of the album. What a fantastic way to spend the afternoon.
I stood in line for an hour @ Banana records to pick up PG in '75 when it was released...fun also to see Dev become a big fan - no one like The Zep before or since. Great reaction as always👍
The Rover has always been 1 of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Presence, III and Physical Graffiti are probably my favorite Zeppelin albums. Was always a Zeppelin fan but when I walked out of the theater in 1976 after seeing The Song Remains The Same I realized Jimmy Page was God (or maybe God was Jimmy Page.) Love your channel. You're doing an amazing job.
Feel better Dev. Thanks for another great reaction. Love this album. This album always makes me move. It just exploded in my day. Led heads couldn't get enough of it. Lived in small town in jersey you were either a zepp fan or a dead head. What's funny is my late husband was a dead head and I of course a led head. I think that's what held the glue to our marriage. Lol 😆
When I was 15 years old (in 1976) I played rhythm guitar in a onetime band with David Henzerling (Keel). when we first met, we were at his house, and he played the Rover, and he soloed like every rockstar of the day. Blew me away. I'm sure he was basically my age, just more advanced in his guitar playing.
The little things... That small finger slide at the start of 'The Rover', the only time Bonzo hits the Toms in 'Pie'. When I first got my Cerwin Vega speakers back in the early 1990s, loved annoying the piss out of my neighbors with many Zepp. tunes. But especially 'Pie", and some others... from Graffiti. I am sure Dev has had time now to look up the lyrics for 'Pie'. So, What do you think of them?? 'Shake 'em on down'... 😁🎵

Hey guys, love your reactions as always! I would like to comment on your comment about the casual Led Zeppelin listener, possibly preferring Led Zeppelin IV over physical graffiti. So we all have our favorite Zeppelin albums and we all have them for different reasons. Physical graffiti is a great album, but not nearly my favorite. My favorite album is Zeppelin two, followed by zeppelin four, followed by zeppelin one followed by zeppelin three and then houses of the holy. I prefer all five of those albums over physical graffiti although I’m not knocking it. It’s a great album. And I am far from a casual listener. I saw them five times from 72 to 77. I lived breathed and died that band. I have every bootleg imaginable starting with buying the blueberry Hill album in 1973. So why is it that I prefer those albums over physical graffiti? Likely because I’m significantly older than you. I find younger people are more often the ones that will list physical graffiti as their favorite album. Probably due to Kashmir mostly but also yeah there’s a lot of great songs. But me having seen Zeppelin do a 3 1/2 hour show in 1972 touring for the fourth album to me, the level of musicianship and especially Roberts vocals was at their peak earlier in their career. I will always love the power and majesty of earlier Led Zeppelin. I feel like the magic began to wane after 1973. In fact, my favorite songs from physical graffiti tend to be those that were recorded earlier, like the Rover, Black Country Woman and Houses of the Holy…. for me, Led Zeppelin II is the greatest album of all time! Please don’t call me a casual listener because physical graffiti is not my favorite lol!… adding onto this because I just watched your reaction to the rover. Dev gets it! Custard pie is a really good song but come on the Rover we’re talking summer 1972 goodness. A great Plant vocal and a great riff, a great song. Love custard pie but Roberts vocals were definitely beginning to shred by 74. You go Dev!
That's a great point. I should have said the more casual listener would have a better chance of having heard LZ4. A favorite album by a great band is a personal choice w/no wrong answers! (And often has to do with the situation when you first heard the album IMHO.) FWIW, I gave LZ4 the nod over PG in my top 25 vid. Lol
@@MusicforBusyPeople hey Mike don’t get me wrong I can totally understand how somebody being exposed to Led Zeppelin physical graffiti as their entry into the band would love it. And that you actually prefer his vocal style in Custard Pie over the Rover. Me hearing them for the first time in 1972, and specifically the second and fourth albums first, that to me was Led Zeppelin. The vocals on Whole Lotta love and Black Dog for example are such a different thing than what he was doing later. Truth be told he wasn’t capable of singing like that anymore and I give him credit for doing the best he could with what he had left in his voice. So yeah, a lot of it has to do with your entry into the band and when and how it happened, but thank God for this band right! I’m going to get more involved with your channel and look into donations, etc. Love what you’re doing!
This album was like $12. I got .50 or .75 cents every day for lunch from my dad. I starved for a few week to get this one and paid all in quarters! LOL good times!

All Right, Dev is back! Nice detail on original album sleeve and FACTS Mike! John Paul Jones considered becoming "Choirmaster" at Winchester Cathedral, luckily Peter Grant talked him out of it! John also played some guitar and that extra organ/keyboard work, as Mike indicated. I was craving some custard pie with pears, in it and then Mike quickly changed the topic. "Save me a slice", NICE! Jimmy polished this album, SO well! I predict Dev will enjoy this album. The Boys had to evolve and grow a bit due to Plant's voice. He trashed it, in the early years. Physical Graffiti marks a turning point in how the band would move forward. Nicely Done!
In '68, when Jimmy recruited Robert Plant and John Bonham, he had basically already produced "The First Album" early and Jimmy and others wrote those lyrics. Plant is not credited for the writing. Jimmy spoke to Plant and encouraged him to start writing the lyrics, from now on. Plant was like what the hell am I going to write about.? Jimmy asked what he liked to do as a hobby, and they talked about their sex lives. Jimmy basically told Robert Plant to write about his relationships with the ladies and there you have it, Little Robert Anthony Plant not only took Jimmy's advice, wore his girlfriend's tiny shirts, on stage and wrote about his sexual experiences partially coded, SO from "Led Zeppelin 2", going forward, Robert wrote most of the lyrics ("The Lemon Song" was one of Robert's first sexually explicit lyrical songs). Of course, Robert started adding JR Tolken and mid-eastern style writings starting mostly on "Led Zeppelin 4" (Battle of Evermore) and moving forward. Dev lovin' on Mike 16:25, Sweet! Mike, take care of that girl!

YES, all Zeps great- this one is special though cus its amazing- John Paul was a big contributor to Zep he was probably spent, his greatness was to much for even himself, of course it would be a heavy deal.
Custard Pie hearkens back to the first couple of Zeppelin albums, in which many of the songs rip off old blues artists. In this case, the lines of the verses are lifted directly from both Bukka White's, "Shake 'Em On Down," and Sleepy John Estes', "Drop Down Mama." And in the tradition of such blues songs, Custard Pie is indeed, a double entendre. You could probably do a two-hour livestream on all the instances of thievery and the original songs and artists. Having said all that, I love the song, but The Rover was my favorite song from my favorite album.
You said it--this is my fav Zep album. which ive always thought was kind of cheating, it being a double album and all, but hey, it shows their range like no other in many ways. however, if the first album of the two had been released as a single record, i think it would be famous as one of the greatest hard rock albums EVER. just look at the songs on it, nuff said.
The main guitar riff is more of a series of double stops. Jones just didn't want to tour like everyone else in the band. Except Jimmy. Just close your eyes and listen to how beautiful these songs were crafted. Custard Pie was also one of the least played live songs. Plant's voice had matured by now. Growing old is a bitch.
Will Dev & Mike eventually do videos where Mike has to listen to some of Dev's favorite music for the first time? I wonder if Mike will be as diplomatic as Dev. At times it seems as if Dev genuinely likes what she's hearing but at other times Dev is being a good sport and saying nice things about music she really thinks is mediocre.
We mostly listen to her music in the car etc. However, we will probably react to some of her past favs that I don't know that well. And I will try to behave.

I'm am ignorant, stone age led fan. First album kicks everything else out of the way. The harp and sequencing of the mix slaps you. Jim is the jam and the peanut butter. He chose well, and in a hurry, to get it rolling.
Like plants rough gravel voice Live didn’t really come off that well. Better in 73 but he didn’t sing with power like he did in 75 but in 75 he battled the cold and flu so most of they tour just wasn’t able to control it

He definitely lost his prime voice at this point. Its an unfortunate. Just listen to babe im gonna leave you and listen to something from 1973 and on. You cant believe its the same dude. In late 1972 his voice was already a phony of what it was 1 year ago but especially at the beginning of 1973 his voice was SHOT. Its really painful to listen. Even tho he had some good nights, it wasnt no where near 1970. Unfortunately he didnt take care of his unique talent. He ABUSED the shit out of it but he made his new voice fit to the new songs. Thats what makes him Robert Plant.
That may be true, but funny thing is, I like his voice throughout his career, maybe he can't hit the high notes as he did when he was young, but his voice matured and he mastered it, but I'm a bit biased, I have loved Plant's entire career, Honeydrippers and all, up until he started doing country, that was it for me lol

Right on re the outro! On the rare occasions i hear this on the radio, i tense up at the end, cos i wait for the damn dj to start talking right before the grittiest part of the outro takes place (you know what im talkin about, lol!) cant wait for them to hear IMTOD!

Jimmy repeats the same riff 5 times and then the overdub of Jimmy playing the same riff but higher… It can be really cool when a track fades out while the intensity of the song is actually increasing. Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (three different ones)” is my favorite example… David Gilmour’s solo is an inferno still growing bigger, but it’s getting farther away.

The day this album was released in Australia I went my mate's place to hear it on his big hi-fi system. On the fourth side visitors arrived and asked we started the whole album again. That happened four times, so I got to hear it a lot that night. One song, The Rover, I had heard before. Right back in February 1972 it was played in Sydney as part of the Whole Lotta Love medley.
I bought this album on release day in February 1975 and stopped off at a mates house on my way home for a similar reason. His parents were musical and had a huge proper hifi system with speakers like dustbins. They actually came home halfway through “ In My Time Of Dying” and his Dad said “ wow, that’s quite powerful stuff!!”.

Can never pick a favourite from this album. Normally just play the whole thing. Actually can't just stop at the first 2 songs so off to listen to the rest of the album. What a fantastic way to spend the afternoon.
I stood in line for an hour @ Banana records to pick up PG in '75 when it was released...fun also to see Dev become a big fan - no one like The Zep before or since. Great reaction as always👍
I first bought this album in 1979 in a 2nd hand store, for 2 dollars, and when I got home, I only had the 2nd disc. I loved it anyway.
When you do In My Time Of Dying...do studio then the 1975 live is a MUST!!! Wait until you hear In The Light!
The Rover has always been 1 of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Presence, III and Physical Graffiti are probably my favorite Zeppelin albums. Was always a Zeppelin fan but when I walked out of the theater in 1976 after seeing The Song Remains The Same I realized Jimmy Page was God (or maybe God was Jimmy Page.)

Lived in small town in jersey you were either a zepp fan or a dead head. What's funny is my late husband was a dead head and I of course a led head. I think that's what held the glue to our marriage. Lol 😆
When I was 15 years old (in 1976) I played rhythm guitar in a onetime band with David Henzerling (Keel). when we first met, we were at his house, and he played the Rover, and he soloed like every rockstar of the day. Blew me away. I'm sure he was basically my age, just more advanced in his guitar playing.
once you get to in through the outdoor, you can tell Roberts voice has mellowed out quite a bit.
The little things... That small finger slide at the start of 'The Rover', the only time Bonzo hits the Toms in 'Pie'. When I first got my Cerwin Vega speakers back in the early 1990s, loved annoying the piss out of my neighbors with many Zepp. tunes. But especially 'Pie", and some others... from Graffiti. I am sure Dev has had time now to look up the lyrics for 'Pie'. So, What do you think of them?? 'Shake 'em on down'... 😁🎵

Hey guys, love your reactions as always! I would like to comment on your comment about the casual Led Zeppelin listener, possibly preferring Led Zeppelin IV over physical graffiti. So we all have our favorite Zeppelin albums and we all have them for different reasons. Physical graffiti is a great album, but not nearly my favorite. My favorite album is Zeppelin two, followed by zeppelin four, followed by zeppelin one followed by zeppelin three and then houses of the holy. I prefer all five of those albums over physical graffiti although I’m not knocking it. It’s a great album. And I am far from a casual listener. I saw them five times from 72 to 77. I lived breathed and died that band. I have every bootleg imaginable starting with buying the blueberry Hill album in 1973. So why is it that I prefer those albums over physical graffiti? Likely because I’m significantly older than you. I find younger people are more often the ones that will list physical graffiti as their favorite album. Probably due to Kashmir mostly but also yeah there’s a lot of great songs. But me having seen Zeppelin do a 3 1/2 hour show in 1972 touring for the fourth album to me, the level of musicianship and especially Roberts vocals was at their peak earlier in their career. I will always love the power and majesty of earlier Led Zeppelin. I feel like the magic began to wane after 1973. In fact, my favorite songs from physical graffiti tend to be those that were recorded earlier, like the Rover, Black Country Woman and Houses of the Holy…. for me, Led Zeppelin II is the greatest album of all time! Please don’t call me a casual listener because physical graffiti is not my favorite lol!… adding onto this because I just watched your reaction to the rover. Dev gets it! Custard pie is a really good song but come on the Rover we’re talking summer 1972 goodness. A great Plant vocal and a great riff, a great song. Love custard pie but Roberts vocals were definitely beginning to shred by 74. You go Dev!
That's a great point. I should have said the more casual listener would have a better chance of having heard LZ4. A favorite album by a great band is a personal choice w/no wrong answers! (And often has to do with the situation when you first heard the album IMHO.) FWIW, I gave LZ4 the nod over PG in my top 25 vid. Lol
@@MusicforBusyPeople hey Mike don’t get me wrong I can totally understand how somebody being exposed to Led Zeppelin physical graffiti as their entry into the band would love it. And that you actually prefer his vocal style in Custard Pie over the Rover. Me hearing them for the first time in 1972, and specifically the second and fourth albums first, that to me was Led Zeppelin. The vocals on Whole Lotta love and Black Dog for example are such a different thing than what he was doing later. Truth be told he wasn’t capable of singing like that anymore and I give him credit for doing the best he could with what he had left in his voice. So yeah, a lot of it has to do with your entry into the band and when and how it happened, but thank God for this band right! I’m going to get more involved with your channel and look into donations, etc. Love what you’re doing!
This album was like $12. I got .50 or .75 cents every day for lunch from my dad. I starved for a few week to get this one and paid all in quarters! LOL good times!
I can't make any promises, but you guys listening/reacting to this album might make me appreciate it more .... :-)

All Right, Dev is back! Nice detail on original album sleeve and FACTS Mike! John Paul Jones considered becoming "Choirmaster" at Winchester Cathedral, luckily Peter Grant talked him out of it! John also played some guitar and that extra organ/keyboard work, as Mike indicated. I was craving some custard pie with pears, in it and then Mike quickly changed the topic. "Save me a slice", NICE! Jimmy polished this album, SO well! I predict Dev will enjoy this album. The Boys had to evolve and grow a bit due to Plant's voice. He trashed it, in the early years. Physical Graffiti marks a turning point in how the band would move forward. Nicely Done!
In '68, when Jimmy recruited Robert Plant and John Bonham, he had basically already produced "The First Album" early and Jimmy and others wrote those lyrics. Plant is not credited for the writing. Jimmy spoke to Plant and encouraged him to start writing the lyrics, from now on. Plant was like what the hell am I going to write about.? Jimmy asked what he liked to do as a hobby, and they talked about their sex lives. Jimmy basically told Robert Plant to write about his relationships with the ladies and there you have it, Little Robert Anthony Plant not only took Jimmy's advice, wore his girlfriend's tiny shirts, on stage and wrote about his sexual experiences partially coded, SO from "Led Zeppelin 2", going forward, Robert wrote most of the lyrics ("The Lemon Song" was one of Robert's first sexually explicit lyrical songs). Of course, Robert started adding JR Tolken and mid-eastern style writings starting mostly on "Led Zeppelin 4" (Battle of Evermore) and moving forward. Dev lovin' on Mike 16:25, Sweet! Mike, take care of that girl!

YES, all Zeps great- this one is special though cus its amazing- John Paul was a big contributor to Zep he was probably spent, his greatness was to much for even himself, of course it would be a heavy deal.
Custard Pie hearkens back to the first couple of Zeppelin albums, in which many of the songs rip off old blues artists. In this case, the lines of the verses are lifted directly from both Bukka White's, "Shake 'Em On Down," and Sleepy John Estes', "Drop Down Mama." And in the tradition of such blues songs, Custard Pie is indeed, a double entendre. You could probably do a two-hour livestream on all the instances of thievery and the original songs and artists. Having said all that, I love the song, but The Rover was my favorite song from my favorite album.
You said it--this is my fav Zep album. which ive always thought was kind of cheating, it being a double album and all, but hey, it shows their range like no other in many ways. however, if the first album of the two had been released as a single record, i think it would be famous as one of the greatest hard rock albums EVER. just look at the songs on it, nuff said.

The main guitar riff is more of a series of double stops. Jones just didn't want to tour like everyone else in the band. Except Jimmy. Just close your eyes and listen to how beautiful these songs were crafted. Custard Pie was also one of the least played live songs. Plant's voice had matured by now. Growing old is a bitch.
Will Dev & Mike eventually do videos where Mike has to listen to some of Dev's favorite music for the first time? I wonder if Mike will be as diplomatic as Dev. At times it seems as if Dev genuinely likes what she's hearing but at other times Dev is being a good sport and saying nice things about music she really thinks is mediocre.
We mostly listen to her music in the car etc. However, we will probably react to some of her past favs that I don't know that well. And I will try to behave.

Live didn’t really come off that well. Better in 73 but he didn’t sing with power like he did in 75 but in 75 he battled the cold and flu so most of they tour just wasn’t able to control it

He definitely lost his prime voice at this point. Its an unfortunate. Just listen to babe im gonna leave you and listen to something from 1973 and on. You cant believe its the same dude. In late 1972 his voice was already a phony of what it was 1 year ago but especially at the beginning of 1973 his voice was SHOT. Its really painful to listen. Even tho he had some good nights, it wasnt no where near 1970. Unfortunately he didnt take care of his unique talent. He ABUSED the shit out of it but he made his new voice fit to the new songs. Thats what makes him Robert Plant.
That may be true, but funny thing is, I like his voice throughout his career, maybe he can't hit the high notes as he did when he was young, but his voice matured and he mastered it, but I'm a bit biased, I have loved Plant's entire career, Honeydrippers and all, up until he started doing country, that was it for me lol

The Rover was recorded for Houses of the Holy though at Stargroves so was Plant in 1972. Before his voice had those problems after late 1972.
The Rover was never played live. Weird.
