Not only one of Supertramp's finest moments, but one of the best pieces of music ever written in my opinion, an absolute masterpiece!!!

'Fool's Overture' is a very dramatic work. Prog Rock is sometimes difficult to wrap your head around. Supertramp is showing us how mankind's leaders can be part of a fool's overture. The world is mad. Yet we can combat the worst of mankind's foolishness. Love this tune and this band.

To understand supertramp, you must understand the time they were in. The sixties were the highest point of hope since WWII. Youth took over, flower power rose. But then, after JFK got shot, his brother got shot, King was shot, etc... There was a turning point in 1968 in so many ways. The promise and hope for a better world evaporated.
In most Supertramp songs there is a longing for such a better world and sadness because it isn't coming, it won't come neither. They cry for a better life in at least 4 albums.
IMO Supertramp is a studio group. Live they are not bad, but in studio they are better.

"Rudy" must be the next masterpiece from Supertramp to react to.
Fools overture is the baby masterpiece of Roger Hodgson and Rudy is the baby masterpiece of Rick Davies.
Believe me it's another song that makes you feel on a train and somewhere else.

    • @Maniacsback
      @Maniacsback 11 місяців тому +3

I agree. But if they are going to react to RUDY they must have the video with the train to nowhere to feel the whole experience.

      Hello from South France, guys,
Above all, they need an excellent sound with detailed stereo and good basses; the pictures we create ourselves are directly in our heads.
I've been on this train so many times in my youth (17-18, now I'm 56) with this song, even though, at the time, I had almost no knowledge of English.
However, it was indeed on board a train I was getting on.
The sensation of speed, the landscapes, first of sunset and then of night, passing by in the window, the stops at the station to feverishly smoke a cigarette, drink a coffee, or grab a treat from a coin-operated vending machine on the platform- or all three simultaneously- waiting for the invitation to come back on board. To go where ? Far, far from the grey. It was all there.
      Peace, folks. ☮😉

She has never left my side since the first time, in 1977. She always amazes me. There is always a detail, something that still manages to amaze me, even after hundreds and hundreds of listens. Supertramp is the most creative band I have ever heard. Nothing is due to chance in their music. He is universal, intelligent, beautiful.

Supertramp is a fantastic band. I got to see them in 1979 when I was 21.
Roger Hodgson wrote this song. I fell in love with Roger Hodgson's voice. And found out that he wrote most of the songs for Supertramp then left the band in 1983 and went solo. He is still touring and plays all of his Supertramp songs as well as new ones he's written since. He' AMAZING and his voice is angelic. His live performances are on UA-cam. Please check him out.

I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.

Dear Andrei and Dominika, thank you one more time for sharing with us, not just one of the great songs ever, but also your feelings and thoughts. Men have been Fools as back as we can remember. These musicians grew up listening to the memories of those who fought during World War II (and maybe heard the memories of those who were in the battle fields in World War I (Portugal also fought alongside the British). We are all Europeans and we share this burden of fighting and suffering. These days we are living in bring us back past memories and fears. Will someone be a Fool again, a lunatic convinced having the right to start a new war? As a teenager I heard this song and kept it in my mind as a reminder of all the past suffering. Roger's haunting words sounded to me as cry, first of despair, then of strength and hope, finally of anger. Thank you again my friends, bless you.

Roger Hodgson - lead singer - wrote this song (and most of SuperTramp's songs). He is a true musical genius. He continued performing "solo" - often with only one other artist that played sax, keyboard, percussion well into the 2000's, and his voice was even better (smoother and more controlled). The album "Breakfast In America" is absolute genius!

Got to do a show with these guys once, 1977. It was at my college where I and my roommate booked all the shows for the school representing the student senate. I also ran the stage crew. Set a fastest load out time record for them. Their production manager was timing it. We were a bunch of college kids and he was curious how well we'd do.
Anyway, the next day I and my roomie met Rick Davies & one other band member, can't remember which one right now, for breakfast. I remarked on how good the show sounded and their sound engineer was great. Davies said ya, almost good enough to go into the studio. Being in Colorado they wanted to get cowboy boots. So that's what we did, took 'em shopping. ;O)
Went into the concert biz full time after college but, unfortunately, never ran into them again.

Now you can see why I call Supertramp and Pink Floyd my #1 & #1 band. They are very different……but for emotion and depth of musicianship and song writing abilities, no one, comes close. The scope and texture of their musical creations just takes your breath away. They don’t play “catchy tunes” and simple chord progressions…..they play masterpieces of a type unmatched by most other bands. They make you feel what they are playing, not just listen to it. Peter Gabriel is close, but he has gone on several weird tangents over the years, so I can’t say he is equal to Supertramp or Pink Floyd, but he up there as well.

I love your reactions. They are reactions of simple music fans, with sensitivity, who feel it, and enjoy it as the vast majority of people do. You don't go into talking about the key, the tone and other topics of supposed musical experts. You just talk about how you feel about each song. And you are also very nice! Greetings from the north of Spain and may you continue uploading many videos!!

I was very fortunate to attend an early concert of theirs, taking in up to this album. They swept the crowd away and vice versa, apparently they were in tears afterwards. The originality was amazing - even though they had many bigger hits afterwards, I think they were more commercial later on, something that wouldn't have pleased them.

    Merchant of Alba,
The both of you so sweet and intelligent. This song is EPIC. Big in scale of what it is trying to convey. This song is a spiritual ! So hard to understand just by listening to it. One must have the lyrics in front. Marchand Of Alba to capsulate this message imagine a prophet (a man)
warning humanity not to ignore their spiritual essence which resides in silence. While people were
sleeping ( not aware of their spirituality - being awake) a ship was sent to sea. This ship was the testing ground
for a nuclear bomb site next to Bikini Island in the pacific
by the United States. The song goes on with the folly ,
the charade the clowning we all participate in when we deny who we really are.
Rocker man , spider man , holy man Queenie. Are all characters outside our true selves. The EGO wants to live it up go crazy! This is the suffering of this world. Wars
and the breakdown of everything. Because we refuse to be still and look inward . Peace and love to both of you.❤😊
