I remember reading a question someone asked you on tumblr like a decade ago about how you dealt with all the mosquitos in Alaska, and you said something along the lines of “You just accept it” and another comment of you saying “People are so hesitant to be alone with their thoughts”. I think about these 2 things often after all these years as a bit of mindfulness practice and acceptance to just be. It’s kept me from racing to avoid discomfort several times and ultimately made me more okay with not only things in life, but myself as a person. Thank you for that.
I completely agree. I've tried to do this more recently, and you're right. I have so many thoughts and ideas I wouldn't have had otherwise. Side note: how beautiful is it there!
Very true. I do the same. Same route with the dog almost every morning, no music, nothing except a lot of thinking and maybe shoot a roll because I learned light and colors are so different each time
Very true ! I just recently realized how often I just scroll through stuff , facebook, youtube, ebay, emails, news. I am not looking for something specific, I am just randomly scrolling through stuff hoping to see something that could interest me. Kind of crazy ... time-thief big time. After realizing it, I say to myself: "You are scrolling again !" Thankx for the reminder !!
nature is an excellent source of inspiration. unlike social media. so I ride my bike every day. I listen only to myself. and observe the surrounding world
I think we all need more videos like this, and fewer about the latest gear. And I LOVE gear, but I know it’s a distraction. Appreciate this perspective.
well said! i've been thinking about this a lot lately. i rely on social media for income but this year, i want to find ways around that so i can detach from the digital world even more than i already have. life became significantly better when i started being more mindful of my screen time. happy to know others are actively thinking about this too. thanks for sharing!
Great thoughts. Rejecting externalization and allowing for solo contemplation is so important in this society that would love to have us pulled outside of ourselves 24/7. I think about what I and everyone else are missing out on almost daily. A friend termed the period of uninterrupted thought that allows for processing experiences the 'contemplative gap'. I don't think we allow ourselves that gap often enough anymore.
Thanks for sharing this, man. It's so easy to default to some form of background stimulation, whether that's a video, podcast, or even something as innocuous as music. Appreciate you dude!
The noise of the world is mostly a distraction. Technology is good but it does need boundaries. It's why monasteries have extended periods of silence, otherwise you only have the noise of the world on your mind.
I think you really take the glass-half-empty perspective on this. Don't get me wrong, finding silence, or more accurately: listening to calm nature, can be very important. We can probably use more of it! But I've actually really cherished lot of the media I've consumed over the years, sometimes *not getting thoughts* can be a good think. Our thoughts are not always our friends. That said, I have tried to go out more in nature specifically and just listen to it. It's pretty great and I'd like to do it more. It's mindfullness, and I think this does a good job of showing how photography can aid in that: ua-cam.com/video/-kg2tVPZ7yk/v-deo.html&pp=ygUiaG93IHRvIGRvIGEgbWluZGZ1bG5lc3MgcGhvdG8gd2Fsaw%3D%3D Anyway, hope you have a great day!
I run without music or podcasts - always. I hear things, see things and think. I love it.

So true! And something that I’ve been reflecting on lately as I begin setting limits on my screen time. Thank you for posting this, Forrest!

That's a good thought Forrest. I try to be mindful of that, but have been slipping lately. I do enjoy quiet and being outside.
I literally have been doing the same thing each morning, walking the dogs in silence. It’s wonderful and makes me love my phoneless time. Great video.
thank you Forrest for saying this.
AMEN TO THAT!
man I was thinking about this this morning as I was making my coffee listing to videos on my phone...

I find that time when I ride my bike , 100% necessary.

This was helpful, thanks man!
