Shows that Ledger did his home work as to the Joker's warped mind Batman is his best friend, the one person in the entire world who he can relate to. So much so even when Joker has a chance to find out who Batman is he just doesn't care as he sees Batman as just Batman not a man under the mask which is disturbing close to the truth as Bruce Wayne is more like a character Bruce puts on in public than who he really is. Disturbing and compelling character dynamics with these two and seems Ledger really picked up on it then ran with it to great effect.

@@enigmabodylanguage if you're taking suggestions, the scene where Joker talks to Dent in the hospital after he's burned would be really cool to see analysed :)
This shows what a genius Christopher Nolan is....more than a Decade and his movies are analysed still.... What a performance by Heath Ledger hats off 👌👌
One of my favorite lines is the "depending on the time he could be in one place...or many places." Which on the face implies that they're moving him from place to place as a prisoner. But it also foreshadows the explosion just ahead where Dent and Rachel are put in jeopardy and Rachel is then killed. But then it ALSO foreshadows Two-Face, a man of two faces--or two places at once. And on top of THAT, the allusion just under that layer to the MENTAL fracturing of Harvey into Two-Face. It's just a really simple, really effective line that both concisely narrows the stakes from beginning of movie to that point and then perfectly encapsulates the "plan" (or present tense ultra-manipulation if not, which would be difficult to believe but not impossible-- I err on the side of Joker has the barebones of the full idea but the details are figured out closer in the moment, i digress) he enacts from that point forward. It is both the smoke of the first half as well as the fuse igniting the bomb to come.
It’s also an extremely graphic way to tell Gordon “you’re up against a clock you can’t see and unless you save him, Harvey is going to be blown to pieces.” At that point Gordon has to retreat but from that point on his emotional state is altered and his judgment is impaired because he does feel responsible for Harvey’s predicament. This plays out in the end at the skyscraper when he doesn’t wait as long as Batman advises him to before breaching - he jumps the gun and almost gets the hostages killed. He says “I’ve got to save Harvey”. Joker has him thinking of Harvey as victim when actually by that time he’s become the perp and Gordon literally forgets that when he goes to the hospital to see Harvey he makes a threat that Gordon is not as sorry as he’s going to be. He doesn’t see it coming when Harvey kidnaps his family .
Not an attempt at discrediting you or any other body language experts, but what I feel is so superb about this entire scene, is that it’s so well done, that anyone, regardless of whether or not they’re fans of the series in general, can watch it, and FEEL like they are actually witnessing an exchange that feels raw, emotional, and genuine. That alone is a rare testament to the extraordinary performance of these three separate, actors, and is INCREDIBLY rare in modern filmography. I wish Heath had at least lived long enough to appreciate the utmost adoration that his portrayal of the Joker received, but in a way, I think he knew his performance was gold. Even the most modest individual knows when they’ve done something astounding, and given the dedicated performance we witnessed in this film, it’s impossible to believe that he was unsure of his incredible portrayal, and how it totally blew everything preceding it out of the water.
Without Heath he wouldn’t have been able to inspire others to do his work, while at the same time showing you must be very careful in a role. We deserve him, he’s one of the greatest actors
*YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE, THAT EVERYONE WAS AT JOKERS MERCY, HE BROUGHT EVERYONE INTO HIS GAME FORCEFULLY HAVING NO CHOICE! AS HE LAUGHED, & DESTROYED THEIR LIVES WHILE THEY HAD NOTHING TO HURT HIM WITH.*
As a professional actor I appreciate these videos because lay people generally have no idea how layered and complex the work of actors, directors, and filmmakers really are. ❤️
You can also she in the Joker's face as he says that he's not a monster, that calm sincerity, like he's telling the truth, or at least what he thinks the truth, proving how far he's gone into madness to the point where he thinks that he's doing Gotham a favour, not being a psychopathic lunatic. This is also further shown he believes this when he visits the mob members and one of them says that he's crazy and he replies in a serious and sort of hurt voice, "I'm not. No, I'm not", showing that he took that personally and is stating that he doesn't think that of himself at all. Really nice touch of Heath Ledger there.
Looking at Batman's body language his movements are all fluid and controlled, no shuffling of his feet or awkward shifting of positions. When he's at the table he's completely still and maintains eye contact, a tactic which normally would work on small time goons but not the Joker. It's interesting that he sits down at all with him, he was probably trying to appeal to the Joker and get him to lower his defenses. Really shows how he's unsure of just how to deal with the Joker, but later falls for the bait and attacks him.
something I'm surprised you didn't touch on was Gordon's nostrils flaring, I would think that would mean something like him trying to control his anger or something similar.
6:09 when he laughs after saying his line and gets punched it's like what he said was the setup to a joke, and batman immediately punching him is the punchline, because of how joker looks really closely at batmans fist while still laughing, like it's the punch he's laughing at itself.
This is especially true because he knows that as long as he keeps batman there beating him up the closer he is to winning the actual "game" they're playing, and he says just as much literally 30 seconds after laughing at batman's punch. And all the joker has to do is take a beating (he's a god at doing this) and not give any real information.
And the facial expression that goes with it. Factual. No homicidal glee. Just straightly (brilliantly) delivered…but the way he drops his head but maintains eye contact feels like he’s saying with his facial expression something like “if you get my meaning”…😂😂😂
What I love most about Ledger's performance is how much it's been influenced by Tom Waites - watch interviews with Waites and you'll see exactly why he's so inspiring. God, I would LOVE to see an analysis of the famous interview
It's even more subtle than that when he uses microexpressions... When he says the first address his eyes look slightly up and to his left. This indicates something between a visual and auditory fabrication... in other words, this is the point where he uses the fabrication and sends those listening to the wrong addresses. When he gives the second address he looks directly to the right, indicating an auditory memory rather than a fabrication, indicating that he needed to remember (also indicated by the slight pause) the second address. He also looks directly at Batman as he finishes the address to reinforce what he is saying as a truth. Fascinating stuff! Great channel by the way! Newly subscribed.
Ironically the eye movements are somewhat unreliable, but he does act as what is commonly assumed the default movements are. He really was an excellent actor....
Yeah, this and the first "Interrogation" of Hannibal Lecter by Clarice Starling. It's not just the situation, and the role reversal. The prisoner getting more out of the interrogator, but how it's filmed. How it's performed, and how it makes you feel. Hannibal Lecter actually gains trust from his interrogator, when it's Hannibal Lecter. You know what he is, you know what he does, and yet you can't help but trust him, because of the way he Forces intimacy in that scene. The joker in this scene, especially when it switches from Gordon to Batman. He starts off giving him tips on how to beat him. Ends up with you have nothing to threaten me with, but it's bookended by that. Batman lost it, because he's used to being feared. Used to being in control, used to having everything he needs in his Utility Belt when he leaves the Batcave. Joker gets under his skin, because he's not prepared for this. He can't prepare for this, because all of his techniques, and tactics work towards the prisoner's goals. That was the plan: Make Batman feel helpless, again. His nightmare now that he's taken the Bat, and turned it against Gotham is not knowing what to do, and now he's locked in a room with not knowing what to do.
Notice Joker looks Batman straight in the eye when saying “I’ll tell you where they both are,” being sincere. But looks away as he’s giving the addresses, lying about which one is where, and then returns his gaze to Batman’s eyes. My guess is Joker is doing this knowingly to test Batman, but he’s so riled up he instantly believes what Joker says.
He forgot the oldest trick in the book joker looked away when he told where Dent and Rachel are so he did flip the addresses when Batman went after her and got Dent instead 😂
Everytime joker says “and tonight your gonna have to break your one rule” I just think they could’ve made the script to make joker say “and tonight your gonna have to break yours.”
I think the point of the wording is to stress and drive home the fact that batman only has ONE rule and that HE (the Joker) is in complete control and is going to force batman to play HIS game AND break that ONE rule all in one master stroke... and he is going to enjoy watching batman do it.
Joker knew somebody was behind him , he looks left and right fast to see which way the person would come from. He close's his eyes before batman smashed his head into the table. I guess he did this same thing once and know's interrogation stategie's as he refurs too aswell. Don't start with the head it makes the 'victim' all fuzy.
Can you do the scene from Batman v Superman where Lex meets Superman on the rooftop? Everyone says they don't like Jesse Eisenberg's interpretation of Lex but I kinda like it in that scene.
One more thing, when Joker asked Commissioner Gordon the time, he didn't tell him. He proceeded to uncuff Joker and in that specific moment Joker saw the time on Gordon's watch.
For someone to be on the level of realism and earned skills that Batman is... requires being a Realist. A Realist does not see the Glass as being "Half full", nor "half empty" ... but instead, see it as both. If he was actually upset with the mention of weak morals, then its more likely to do with his own inner weaknesses. Remember, that Batman blocked off the door, and started using physical violence. This shows that he himself could not maintain his own level of morals, values, and self control. That said... Id guess it was more to do with just being severely upset that peoples lives were on the line, due to the manipulations of a crazed psychopath. It doesnt matter to Batman that people are capable of doing bad things (and do bad things) ...as Batman is not that much of an extremist. He typically only goes after the extremist criminal element. Not the kid whom steals a toy from a toy-store, nor even dealing with a simple drug addict... that is not robbing nor threatening others. The Joker, however... is a radical, that is almost trying to justify his own psychopathic narcissism. He paints everyone in either Black or White... with no range in between. He almost wants to prove, that his ways of seeing and dealing with the world, is the best way. He wants to revel in others failing... being discovered as hypocrites.. that will act in the worst of ways... every single time, when challenged. But all of that said... The fact is... that the Jokers many excuses and justification are not really needed. They are more a tool of Psychological Manipulation games. He really does not have to have a reason, excuse, etc... as he merely enjoys doing what he does. He gets off on harming others... most especially with psychological abuse games (Pushing others emotional buttons. Tying to "Crack" them, as if their mind and soul, was a puzzle / game). The verbal games he uses, are more for the Theatrics, Emotional responses from others, and to throw people off, via manipulations. If I recall correctly... he had told a story about how he got his wide "Smile". However, each time he told the story... it was different. This shows that his stories were merely mind games, rather than the actual truth. As said.. the Psychopath needs no rhyme nor reason. They are born without a conscience, morals, values..etc. They feel no empathy for others pain, and suffering... and they get off on the thrill and challenges, of doing some of the darkest of deeds.
Ever since I made the recommendation to review part of "Apocalypse Now", I have had "There Will Be Blood" on my mind. I believe it is a great (and hidden) love story, but from whom and to whom is the love being directed is the question... I would absolutely give anything to see what you thought about any of the scenes in that movie!
I couldn’t imagine a theme any less appropriate to describe that film than “a love story.” Its not a love story. You’d have to be insane to interpret that
The laughing after getting blasted like that....fkn goat....watch his eyes before he gets punched...since he really was getting punched he had to keep track of the punch so it didn't knock him out
Taunting. The whole thing was about taunting Batman. Joker was plucking strings he knew would make vibrate the entire time. Nothing Bruce could do in that room at that time would change things. It was already well set up and this interaction was part of it. Batman's interrogation was key to it. If Batman had not slammed Joker against the mirror, giving him access to a weapon, he'd never have gotten a phone and escape. This was all planned for and prepped.

This shows what a genius Christopher Nolan is....more than a Decade and his movies are analysed still.... What a performance by Heath Ledger hats off 👌👌
6:09 I like how he laughs before Batman even landed the punch. He truly likes playing with Batman.
"When the lights are turned on Batman is there. Which shows he wants to be in the room."
This is one of the greatest scenes in all of cinema, and the fact that it can be analysed in this way backs that up
The upshot...
This is one of the greatest scenes in cinema history!
It's so easy to forget how young Heath was in this role until you see his bare hands. RIP
One of my favorite lines is the "depending on the time he could be in one place...or many places."
Which on the face implies that they're moving him from place to place as a prisoner.
Absolutely 100% agree and well said.
Without Heath he wouldn’t have been able to inspire others to do his work, while at the same time showing you must be very careful in a role. We deserve him, he’s one of the greatest actors
One of the most powerful interactions I have seen in film. Intense is a mild word to describe it.
❤️
Great analysis, Enigma. This is my favorite scene from The Dark Knight.
Nice I just rewatched this film yesterday after I watched the video you did on joker
Heath will always be the greatest joker RIP 🙏🏽💯
I'd like to see body Language reactions to Michael Myers in Halloween(78) and Halloween(18)
That’s Actually a really good suggestion!
Every time I see clips of Ledger's Joker I'm reminded of how great his performance was! This was such a good movie! Great video!
This movie is amazing, from the dialogue to the action sequences, they all fit together seamlessly. One of my all time favorite films.
Damn you good 10/10
Enigma, how about the mission briefing scene in Apocalypse Now?
Looking at Batman's body language his movements are all fluid and controlled, no shuffling of his feet or awkward shifting of positions. When he's at the table he's completely still and maintains eye contact, a tactic which normally would work on small time goons but not the Joker. It's interesting that he sits down at all with him, he was probably trying to appeal to the Joker and get him to lower his defenses. Really shows how he's unsure of just how to deal with the Joker, but later falls for the bait and attacks him.
I can’t wait for Body Language Analyst reacts to Body Language Analyst talking
The part that always gets me is when Joker watches batmans incoming punch with a smile, and a laugh
something I'm surprised you didn't touch on was Gordon's nostrils flaring, I would think that would mean something like him trying to control his anger or something similar.
I was looking for a nostril flare comment, thanks! Also the gulping that accompanied it.
Harvey dent also does this right after he flips the coin and he doesn't get to kill the joker. Probably the same reason
Ledger was such an incredible actor, so is Oldman and Bale
6:09 when he laughs after saying his line and gets punched it's like what he said was the setup to a joke, and batman immediately punching him is the punchline, because of how joker looks really closely at batmans fist while still laughing, like it's the punch he's laughing at itself.
This is especially true because he knows that as long as he keeps batman there beating him up the closer he is to winning the actual "game" they're playing, and he says just as much literally 30 seconds after laughing at batman's punch. And all the joker has to do is take a beating (he's a god at doing this) and not give any real information.
Do more or else I will be sad :(
👆
"Well, depending on the time, he may be in one place, or several..."
Such an underappreciated line.
And the facial expression that goes with it. Factual. No homicidal glee. Just straightly (brilliantly) delivered…but the way he drops his head but maintains eye contact feels like he’s saying with his facial expression something like “if you get my meaning”…😂😂😂
such a great scene! damn why do we lose the best so young :(
What I love most about Ledger's performance is how much it's been influenced by Tom Waites - watch interviews with Waites and you'll see exactly why he's so inspiring.
God, I would LOVE to see an analysis of the famous interview
Wow this is awsome can you do more joker scenes please
*Video pauses*
"in this seen batman is wearing a bat mask, so you know hes batman"
“The way his body moves when Batman appears shows he hit his head”
Yeah heaths portrayal of the joker is historical and legendary love it so much everything about him as the joker wardrobe, voice everything perfection
I literally watched that movie yesterday, what!
Same
lovin this m8
Thanks!
I hope he knows how iconic he has become even though he is deceased.
I love how brutal this scene is. You can actually see how chipped the walls are from previous takes.
I noticed the Joker never raised his hands up in self defense from Batman's punches.
“Depending on the time he might be in one spot or several” I just got that he was talking about being blown into pieces...
Shiiit you're right
Gosh how did i never notice that
Yoooo that’s crazy
Everyone in that movie deserves an Oscar INCLUDING the background character
His nightmare now that he's taken the Bat, and turned it against Gotham is not knowing what to do, and now he's locked in a room with not knowing what to do.
also... not only is he locked in that room not knowing what to do... there are WITNESSES to what he DOES or MAY do.
The "You, complete, me!" Line was the moment it went from a fantastic portrayal of the Joker, to the quintessential Joker, for me.
Can you please do Batman and Jared Leto Joker from the end of the Snyder cut? There’s some good stuff going on there.
The guy is bashing his freaking down but there's no drop of blood. Very realistic chris nolan as always
Very true!
Keeleke
In my opinion these types are videos are a great way to learn about acting or how and what to do in scene with body language
Why don't you try to analyse the Punishers court scene in DareDevil season 2
Great, now I gotta watch all these videos analyzing the Joker, Thanks. :)
One more thing, when Joker asked Commissioner Gordon the time, he didn't tell him. He proceeded to uncuff Joker and in that specific moment Joker saw the time on Gordon's watch.
Great vid. Seen the movie a ton of times and you pointed out many things I never noticed.
Staying on Interrogation Scenes, He should Decrypt The Jerome Valeska Interrogation Scene In Gotham
I loved this video!!! Honestly I think this is one of the greatest movies of all time. Even though it’s a comic book movie.
Finally, now I can understand how unafraid Joker is of Batman besides him saying it outright
Im not joking, even without dialogue you can understand it
Heath totally owned that character, sure miss him, wondered what he would do next..... a shame.
I think batman hits the joker after he mentions fragile Morals, because batman believes in the best of people.
@@johndough8115 thanks for your input! I appreciate it!
Love that you analyzed this scene. Such a powerful and amazing scene. Still hard to understand how Heath pulled this off so convincingly.
I couldn’t imagine a theme any less appropriate to describe that film than “a love story.”
Its not a love story. You’d have to be insane to interpret that
The laughing after getting blasted like that....fkn goat....watch his eyes before he gets punched...since he really was getting punched he had to keep track of the punch so it didn't knock him out
Wowi
this movie is legendary. so happy to see all these videos on it
I really like these videos, thanx for them man
My pleasure
Great analysis. Great break down. Superb ranking.
Oh and that end credits with the chick and the guy getting it on, dude why you gotta Tempt me 🤣. I'm trying to avoid sin
Love the video man can't wait for more content on the Joker stay cool and never change love the content.
Heath Ledger did an absolutely amazing job in that film. It's by far my favourite superhero movie.
Perfect analysis of this iconic scene.
Loving the videos. You should do the Snyder cut joker and batfleck convo!
