Very true! So glad an expert has dissected and appreciated the brilliance in Cillian's acting, and the depth he gives to the character he plays, like The Scarecrow. He understands the assignment! Such a great actor and he deserves such praises. 🌟🙌🏻🌟

I'm glad he gave scarecrow the justice he deserves. Cillian Murphy is a master at acting as johnathan Crane. He didn't even need a mask to be a good foe, he still would have made the same impact on me.
Same! He’s one of my favorite actors and Scarecrow is one of my favorite Batman villains. (Love all the Batman villains) He’s really amazing at playing Scarecrow aka Dr. Jonathan Crane. Plus he’s hot. 😍
Really not just a great performance as the Joker. Just a great performance. I heard Heath Ledger worked with a voice coach for months perfecting his Joker voice, and his laugh.
I absolutely LOVED Heath Ledger's Joker. I was amazed that Joaquin Phoenix was able to portray his Joker in such a . . . relatable manner. It truly shocked me how much you could empathize with a character who is supposed to be a murderous psychopath.
Joaquin portrayed a metamorphosis and that's very hard to pull off. I think WB should gradually complete the transformation in another solo film. It would definetly bank in another billion.
i dont believe anyone else could have followed in HL footsteps - and elevated that character - but JP. that film easily could have been ridiculed forever but it was a gem for sure.
That is Slander. Joker only "appears" to be a Murdering Psychopath. He is actually hyper Intelligent and Logical. ... his "Goal" may be horrible, his "Method" may be disturbing. .. .. .. but he -isnt- crazy. He just lives in a world where (as they say in Forever):: where 'right' and 'wrong' no longer exist, but have been replaced with 'fun' and 'boring' Being an "average citizen" is boring ... blowing up a hospital, however.
Heath Ledger constantly licking his lips in The Dark Knight supposedly was actually a "side effect" from the prosthetic scars he had on his face. Apparently Nolan liked it and chose to leave it in.
yeah, heard/ read somewhere that the edges of the prosthetic kept coming off, so he licked it to stick it back on. Became a habit and looked good on film.
@@faffywhosmilesatdeath5953 Something to do with his voice, I believe he used to get dry lips doing the voice, truthfully it's probably a combination of form and function
He's my favorite villain. That voice. So distinct and really threatening. I couldn't believe it was the same guy that played the villain in Star Trek Nemeses.
Plus he truly brought alive the fact that bane isn’t just some brute with strength. He’s highly skilled and even more intelligent which was brought out by his tone
Bane was actually my first time seeing Tom Hardy's performance of any kind, so when he later showed in other movies like Mad Max and so fourth, he looked totally unrecognizable, he's a great actor, though i dont think he was the perfect choice for Venom though, he was still good with what was given to him
To be fair saw the same thing recently with Robert Pattinson being casted as batman. Being discounted because of past roles. Ledger because of playing pretty boy/lover roles and Pattinson because of twilight
Forget the critics, fans pretty much unanimously bashed Heath Ledger's casting when it was first announced. I still remember the backlash back then, it was crazy.
The whole Dark Knight trilogy was packed with talent. Amazing cast Christian Bale, Michael Cane, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Heath Ledger, Liam Neeson and many more. One of the all time greatest composers in Hans Zimmer and the pure brilliance of Christopher Nolan.
@@bloodaonadeline8346 well jack nicholson doesnt really fit in that category of actors. The man is literally like top 10 greatest actors of all time so he's a little more than world class
He was originally going to play Batman/Bruce Wayne, but Christian Bale was the better actor for that role. Murphy did such a good job though, even they recognized letting him go would be a waste, and that's how he got the role as the Scarecrow
I had such high hopes for Leto’s Joker but was utterly disappointed, and never quite understood where the portrayal fell short but this explanation helps a lot. Ledger and Phoenix on the other hand are perfection.
@@vbvermont I know Leto is a phenomenal actor, but I would like to see his joker broken down. It might give us access to what he was going to eventually do.

@@I_am_currently_chill I think they were both great for different reasons. Both movies had different types of production behind it. Tim Burton is kinda cooky so Jack worked well for that vision. And The Dark Knight series was well...dark. And Heath played that well.
God I remember when that movie hadnt even come out yet and Ledger’s death was on the news making the film legendary before it even hit theaters. I think I saw that movie in theaters so many times on imax to experience its awesomeness
Cillian Murphy is so underrated.. a very humble man too. Additionally: if anyone likes Cillian Murphy and hasn't seen his little thriller film with Rachel McAdams called Red Eye, you should watch it. His entire performance carries that movie.
I absolutely loved Batman Begins and feel that it tends to get overlooked a lot because of the other movies.. which is not a fault at all of Dark Knight because it's so good.. but I wish people would go back and really see to appreciate it as much.. same for Rises.. Nolan really knocked it out of the park with the trilogy..
Nah. He did a great work, but the fact that he died changed the way some view his acting. He didn't do anything supernatural in Batman. In fact, would he have gotten the Oscar if he didn't died? Seymour Hoffman did an an amazing job that year too, so did Brolin, and the rest. I mean... Ledger didn't do anything different than them, just great acting. Joaquin on the other hand... That's masterclass.

It actually plays to this idea that Bane is a disfigured and hurt man... add it to the out-of-breath, painful delivery of lines, the mask and all that and you see a man that has never been able to breath fresh air or freely speak in his entire life. I don't know about you, but that would have turned me into a villain too xD
I think Jim Carrey now, 26 years later,, would be a much better Riddler. He's older, darker and less theatrical but still has that playfulness that's needed for the character.
Right? I feel like at the era in his life when making the movie he was chosen for his enthusiasm, so if anything the producers are the ones to blame for getting this kind of great actor who didn't have that range yet.
Ya i think it had more to do with the producers of the films..wanted to make those Batman movies super kid and family friendly so that they can sell toys. Jim Carry is a great actor that would be an amazing Riddler in Chris Nolan’s Batman adaptation.
When I was a kid watching Cillian Murphy's performance as scarecrow, I was legit petrified. I don't know why I just like feel like so scared of him. I feel empathic for him. As I grow older I noticed that it's his eyes. He's very good at using his eyes and eyebrows to work for him. That man such a phenomenal actor.
It gets a lot of hate but I actually really liked Birds of Prey, it wasn't the greatest movie ever but it was really entertaining Margot Robbie is a phenomenal Actress not just as Harley Quinn but in other films she's been in too. My one complaint was I felt like Black Mask wasn't that great, I love Ewan McGregor but he just felt really odd. I know some people see the almost all Female cast and think it'll be as awful as Charlie's Angels or Ghostbusters reboots, or whatever, but they handle it in a great non cringey way like you'd automatically expect. 2 examples of a nearly entirely female cast I'd say are Suspiria remake (there's 2 men in that entire movie) or Annihilation where every Scientist sent into the Shimmer is a Woman, which I never really noticed the first time, because it doesn't cut down the Men, or make it be or focus on the gender of the characters, it lets them just be characters without caring about making a statement or making it the selling point. With Birds of Prey, when they finally come together as a team they've all got different but still similar motivation for being there, other than "we're strong independent Women" which a lot of modern day movies fail to do, being a Woman is their entire character. Sorry for the long rant I get carried away talking about movies because I just love movies too much.
That Nolan Batman trilogy was something special. The amount of world class acting performances is just astounding. I cannot think of a more star-studded but also a more well-chosen cast for any set of movies before or since The Dark Knight trilogy.
Agree, best comic book adaptation ever. I wish warner bros would go back to the character driven deeper stories with great cast instead of trying to copy marvel and go full cgi
@@davids8127 Seriously... I never thought about the whole DC vs Marvel thing when I think about The Dark Knight trilogy. To me, the Nolan Batman movies were a tier above. They didn't and don't need to be compared to a Marvel movie because they aren't comparable. Marvel movies are about silly amounts of action and over the top displays of skill and quick wit thats becoming of a "superhero." They use their awesome power when overcoming a seemingly unbeatable enemy, that constantly one ups the last foe every single time over the course of all movies in the MCU, to become more and more comically powerful, and impossible to defeat.... It's good fun, stupid fun though. The Nolan Batman trilogy was so much more than just a bit of over the top fun that's not taken too seriously, though they certainly gave us that in just the right doses. I remember when they first came out, it didn't matter how many times I'd seen them, any movie in the trilogy this applies to, if one came on television I was going to sit down and watch it. Period. And it was exciting every time, it was a good night when I was watching batman. Everything about those movies was great. It was just an undisputed fact that you knew didn't need argued to anyone, because they knew it too. They had so much atmosphere, inspired so much emotion. Every single performance was world class, everyone from Tom Hardy's Bane, to Christian Bales Batman, Scarecrow, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Alfred of course, and Morgan Freeman... No he didn't play anyone in the movie...Morgan Freeman plays Morgan Freeman, and that's the only character Morgan Freeman acts out! I don't even NEED mention the legendary, monumental performance, Heath Ledger gifted to all of us as The Joker... Standing tall throughout the test of time, but not untouched by the tragedy of his death, shortly thereafter. This just adds even more to the emotion, and the nostalgia it delivers though! Heath Ledgers last fully completed role... To add to that, there's a mystique, and a darkness that surrounds the whole thing, what with people saying that Ledger had to put himself into such a horrific headspace to produce this treasure of a performance for us, that's what caused him to end up dying tragically of a drug overdose much too young. All of those rumors, whether true or not, definitely contribute to the overall legend of Nolan's Batman films. .... I think that.... I love The Dark Knight trilogy more than I realized I did until this moment. I hadn't even thought of the movies in a decade... I should watch them again. Yeah, I should do that... I think I will.
@@danielnelson4881 I agree, I didnt compare them I think they way above the typical blockbuster style, I meant about the recent series with Justice league etc, they wanted to replicate what marvel did which they failed miserably. And yes that timelessness what makes the Nolan trilogy, I dont know how many times I saw the Dark knight but it always gave me new way of appreciacion for some details or brilliant dialogue. Its going down as one of all time best trilogy for me the Lord of the rings is the first because its an epic adventure throughout but Dark knight remains ine of my all time favorutie movie. I dont think anyone come close to it for long time as Nolan kinda made his own genra with his take.
I was completely absorbed by belief in Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, and the entire unsettling energy of the movie still haunts me. I’ve rarely seen a movie so bleak, yet so perfect. And the fact that it all rests on _one actor’s shoulders_ - and he pulls it off *_masterfully_* - is just **chef’s kiss**
Tom Hardy's Bane was menacing in a incredible and realistic way. His voice, his eyes, all showing the focus and danger of the character. Perfect acting.
Cillian is just an AMAZING actor in everything he does. He has amazing facial expressions which he learned to tie it to inflections in his voice which really gives his characters a new dimension that people become enthralled to watch. Ledger set the bar so incredibly high for the joker it will literally take decades before someone else can fill his shoes.
@@turtleislandlac1490 a few months ago I would’ve scoffed at the idea of Lillian as the bat, now that I’m 3 seasons into peaky blinders that opinion has definitely changed
@@IloveElsaofArendelle actually I don't know if I'd go as far as to say he's not a good actor but the way he went about portraying the joker was dogshit.
@@cplcoen I believe that the best thing that Bale ever did was Empire of the Sun, which is his first movie. After that, not so much. He’s just not a very good actor. The same goes for George Clooney. Any good movie either has been in was good in spite of them and never because of them.
Why Pheonix was so believably in pain because he in part was: both the physical strain he put on himself to make him slim and boney, to the mental preparation, during the filming of that film he never had a break for one second. That's true dedication
There’s prep for a role, like research getting into the character, losing or gaining weight. Then there’s going too far with isolating and injuring yourself and I Jared Leto’s case send dead animals and used condoms to cast mates, that behavior is inappropriate and possibly illegal, and the isolation and harm is very unhealthy. You don’t need to do that at all to get a good performance.
Heath ledgers performance is so good in "The Dark Knight" that every single time I watch it, I become convinced that he is going to do something completely different than the last time I watched it.
*Bane - as he catches Wayne's fists in midair, unbothered:* "Peace has cost you your strength. Victory, has defeated you." Simple, yet, menacingly true lines, to reserve that room in your opponent's mind. It was mentally all downhill from there, as Wayne began realizing he had gravely underestimated Bane. Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy will always be the best in my opinion.
He's too eloquent to be scary, imo. The choice of accent, and the insightful dialogue were too spot on and made him too predictable of a villain. "Everything Burns" vs "Peace has cost you..." Idk man, I just didn't feel anything Bane said. However there was one scene where that guy was trying to give bane orders and bane just puts his fingers on his shoulder and says "do you feel in charge." I thought that was done well. But everything the joker says in tdk was just as impressive if not better.
I went to Dark Knight to watch it in Imax, expecting yet another decent action movie. I can honestly say that I have NEVER been blown away by a performance of a supposed supporting actor like I was by Ledger's. It is so rare for a single character to take over a movie, but Heath did it.
When Cillian Murphy sighed and took off his glasses during the scene with Falcone, I got chills down my spine and knew something horrible was about to happen.
The reason I loved Christopher Nolan’s Dark nights series was because it had such a dark, but realistic/humanistic tone and it was so powerful. Heath ledger did a perfect job exemplifying that.
I appreciate how it creates such a modern feel too. Even the soundtrack with those drums. that Gotham architecture is so clean to me, like the shot behind Joker’s back with the mask at the start of TDK looks so crisp and nice
The DCEU has been trying to copy/capture the Nolan trilogy’s magic ever since and they will only continue to make themselves look foolish. The “closest” they’ve gotten is with Phillips’ Joker film because instead of trying to copy/capture what Nolan did, they allowed the director (and lead actor) to make something unique and their own. I mean, for all intents and purposes, Joker is just a deep dive into one man’s descent into madness; appreciating and mourning his loss of innocence; his final surrender to his psychological disease. But yes: Heath Ledger will continue to be the best Joker, followed by Nicholson, and finally Phoenix/Hamill closely behind
Out of these I have to say my favorites are: Tom Hardy (Bane ist my favorite Batman Villain and He captured his intelligente and anti Batman like character perfect) Jack Nicholson (The OG theatre Joker, absolutely brilliant performance) Dany DeVito (been a while since I actually watched the movie but I really liked his portrayal) Heath Ledger (Best Joker performance hands down. He is *the* Joker)
Heath was great at whatever character he was playing, but one thing I'll say is that character was not the joker. The joker is completely insane to the point of defying any diagnostic criteria and is just completely unpredictable whereas with heath I always got the vibe he is in full control of his faculties and he's just going to very extreme measures to prove a point. On a separate note I agree tom hardy absolutely crushed it as bane and devito played the sad misfit element of penguin perfectly given his origin in that movie and as for jack his performance was just a chefs kiss from start to finish.
@@ashspinks9529 Fair enough but that's maybe why I like Heaths version of the Joker so much. Sure the real Joker is just this insane maniac who has No respect for life other than be it for his amusement. There's just something about the speculative and cold Heath Joker that fascinates me.

I’ve always enjoyed the way Cillian is such a veteran actor and it disappoints me when he’s looked over by the few that do sleep on him. He does what so many actors can’t. He’s like an instrument in a way that at sometimes the instrument can “sing” without actually hearing audible lyrics. His eyes and breathe control and body mannerisms are so exceptional and second to none. I rarely watch actors who can run a whole scene purely off body movement and facial expression while using little to no dialogue at all. But Cillian kills it. Really shows power, patience, control and endless practice. Shoes a lot about his personal character as well. He must be a very observing person rather than a talker. Bc Keanue reeves and ppl similar are more quiet guys but man John wicks monotone and saturated character write is done so well by Reeves in the same acting fashion Cillian specializes in
I agree with most everything that was said, only for the part when he’s breaking down that last scene with Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. He says we see too much Selena Kyle. I thought that was the whole point. In that scene, as she’s about to get killed my Max Shreck, a guy who had victimized her previously, the vulnerable, nervous Kyle comes out, only for the Catwoman persona to resurface when she delivers the line “how about a kiss, santy claus?” You can even hear it in the change of tone in her voice, I thought it was brilliant.
I completely agree. Just wrote a comment saying the same. Apart from his "analysis" of her character arc being way off imo in terms of logistics she had to get close him in order to kill him. If she jumped up he would have just unloaded on her.
Now I thought it was either too many bullets too quickly or more likely she was acting like Selena to get in close enough to kill him with the weapons she had. Only to reveal herself as Catwoman right before the death kiss. Beautiful acting.
Cillian Murphy scared me and made me really believe he is the scarecrow. Such an underrated actor, and he always perfect in his role. Even in Inception he was just amazing and I don't have to mention 28 Days Later.

In a movie that was specifically suppose to be campy, he restrained himself more than you'd expect from Jim Carrey. At least when he was Nygma. I feel like he still did the best in that movie.
It’s a weird take on Two Face to me. Two Face was a villain that above all cared about duality, chance, and of fate. Obviously there have been a ton of different takes on the characters over the decades but I guess for me while ultimately I think Two Face would always honor the outcome of the flip of his coin, there seems like nothing other than stone cold killer in Eckhart’s performance. While maybe it’s not necessary to the plot progression in The Dark Knight I would have liked a scene where Two Face struggles emotionally with the reality of his own duality. While it’s clear that Two Face is a chance-leads- directly-to-fate persona than Harvey Dent is at any point, it would be nice to have seen more internal emotional struggle than something so one sided.
He gives a great performance expressing the duality of Harvey Dent. You can watch him slowly slip as the movie goes on and ultimately succumb to his dark side. His performance was great because he had to play two polar opposite roles.
Going after him for 10 minutes of screen time in a movie heavily reshot and rewritten by executives who wanted a dark film to be more like Deadpool? I don’t think shallow is the right word to describe Leto then, but maybe, you?

Tom Hardy's Bane is my favorite and seriously deserves more credit. Heath Ledger's Joker will forever be legendary, there's no arguments there. But selling this menacing force of fear and darkness and how much he intimidated Batman on his first encounter and his monologue on the differences between him and Bruce on their use of Darkness was just amazing. The Joker's lines made you think about his perspective of society but Bane absolutely haunted you on what real fear and real torture and darkness really was and just his delivery of his monologue sends chills up my spine every single time like "oh no. You're in my element now. And there is nothing comfortable or safe about it."
Something I've always loved about TDKR's Bane is the voice. It would have been such an easy decision to give him a deep, guttural tone, to try and force initimidation out of him, but just like with the soft hand touch scene that was dissected in the video, his voice being so... thin, higher pitched, thematically mis-matched to Bane's physical appearance, it used contrast to fantastic effect.
What would of made bane even better is if they somehow made him look weaker or skinnier then return to natural when he uses his juice 💪🏽 they could of used cgi but I’m glad they didn’t
Considering that one of Penguin's iconic lines in Batman Returns is "I'm an animal!!!", if you say Devito's take lacks humanity well I would say that he is portraying the character exactly as Burton wanted, and so Burton is more to blame for that particular take on the character. I actually like the depiction (even though it varies from the source material) and did feel that Penguin's death - along with the penguins as the unofficial 'casket bearers' - was one of the scenes with the most pathos in the film.
@@miguelthekewlkid272 Other than a few niche cases, like Robin Williams' more successful movies or some of Johnny Depp's blockbusters, the actor almost never has much of a say. My guess is this acting coach is the type who thinks everyone plays in their own self-directed one-man-show to Standing-Room Only empty closets like he did.
I always liked Christopher Walker’s Max Shreck in that film, too. It might come across a bit campy, but I found his sneering and apathy very effective.
yes, and Anthony recognised that. Said that Devito just had to pick that up and run with it. That movie was just awful anyways... The only one of Burton's takes on Batman (or any of the live action Batman movies in the 90s) that really worked was the first one with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. The rest were kinda painful.
Yes, to me the most mindblowing thing about Tom's performance is that almost his entire face is covered with that mask thing and yet he managed to deliver this incredible acting using his eyes, voice and body language.
I think because the acting coach wanted to mention something new. During the press tour promoting the movie, Hardy and Nolan would keep mentioning his eye acting.
I will never forget how incredible that dinner party scene is from The Dark Knight. When he came out of the elevator none of the other actors there had seen Heath Ledger in costume before, and he always did his own makeup. Michael Cain had a line there that he actually forgot to say, and Maggie Gyllenhaal said he was legitimately terrifying. Heath Ledger literally 'stole' the scene, leaving the others speechless and in shock just from the sight of him.
Overhyped sensationalised horseshit. Everyone on set knows its all make believe. No one was legit terrified. They were acting and overhyping a performance to sell a movie and praise Heaths legacy
@Springs & Sprockets We don't know if what we saw was real Maybe he just told a fake story  If it isn't the case, I DON'T CARE ! THE JOKER IS A CRIMINAL CLOWN THAT BLOWS UP THINGS, MAN. IF YOU'RE A FAN OF LEDGER, OK. BUT DON'T BE A HARDCORE FAN THAT DENIES A NEW JOKER
@Springs & Sprockets Actually, This version of Joker is not designed to be a villain at all. They just used Joker as a medium to tell a story. This version of Joker wouldn't be in any Batman or other films, it's just one needed story told through Joker as an origin story.
Leto's performance felt so forced and contrived...like he was playing a character impersonating a character. There was no conviction in anything he did - it felt like a very phoney-crazy front, like what you see someone do during a police interrogation when they're trying to convince the detectives that they're insane and not at fault for whatever crime they committed.
I’d be interested in a breakdown of the performances of the actors who played Batman. Bale, Affleck, Conroy, Keaton, etc. Ideally, after The Batman comes out so we can get Pattinson too.
Michael Keaton was the best for me. He didn't need black eyes and just spoke with enough bass tone to disguise his voice. All the rest overplayed the batman roles. Going back to the TV series , a blind man could tell you who batman and robin were......
I enjoy Christian, Kevin, and Michael’s performances as Batman/Bruce Wayne most. And I can’t wait to see the new Batman movie! I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy it and Robert’s portrayal. And others too.
After seeing the latest batman I think Pattinson does the bruce wayne part better. You saw more of the kid that lost his parents instead of the guy with money. Bale was awesome but I gotta give this one to pattinson
I think all the actors have brought something to distinguish themselves from the rest and that’s why opinions on who the best is vary so much. Btw, Pattinson is my favorite.
I didn't see the whole film, but I agree. I also think (unless she actually did the somersaults, which is still in her favor) she gets credit for Catwoman being out of breath.
Yeah. She did everything right in that performance. I think DeVito's Pengun was great too. They both delivered what was required in the best possible way, maybe even better. The only thing off about that movie was the script. Too much of it was just silly and unrelatable (aside from the origins and lines of Penguin and Catwoman), and as a result the movie has aged badly, especially when compared to the first one. None of this is down to those 2 actors, who I think carried the film.
What also makes Heath Ledger's Joker so great, was that you felt he was making his stories up, but the way he told them part of you felt there was some truth to it. A phenomenal performance by an actor who left us so young.
@@vishalchidambaram1064 I'm saying I think the dark Knight is the 3rd best DC movie and better than every MCU movie. I prefer batman begins and the dark Knight returns deluxe (which is just both part 1 & 2 together). That's what I'm talking about.
I mostly agree. But I think Devito’s penguin is underrated, he embraced being labeled a monster but he at heart was a orphaned child who was never really a threat to anyone.
absolutely the penguin was an awesome performance and his death was meant to be tragic, not threatening. it was more sad, where I even felt myself feeling sorry for him, even though I hated him most of the movie.
That moment when Dagget says "I'm incharge" and Bane puts his hand on him, suddenly having total control over Dagget by saying "Do you really feel incharge?" is one of the most powerful moments in cinema.
Wonderful scene indeed. Even more so when you take in account it's message: Men with money rely too much in an abstract power that can suddenly end at any moment when real power comes along.
The death scene of Catwoman was exactly that, her death. She's ceasing to be Catwoman and becoming Selena Kyle again, hence the staggering and collapsing, since Selena Kyle is already dead.
Would have love to have seen more villain development and exposition with the new riddler. I felt cheated out of a great performance from Paul dano. Too much cat woman and penguin.
@@deed2466 The creepy part is is that he looks so innocent and sweet even though he was capable of such destruction, which is kinda true to a lot of ppl tdy
I love that you can see fear, chaos, and pain (respectively) in Cillian, Heath, and Tom's performances since that's what each of their characters stood for. All three of them really knocked it out of the park. 🦇
Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy were all BRILLIANT. Props to Christopher Nolan too, 3 villians out of his 3 batman movies gave legendary performances!
Cameron Monaghan's Joker from Gotham is hands down my favourite. I know he had a lot more to work with in terms of time for a story line because it was a TV series, but that also made it more like the comics.
He was fantastic in the show although I never understood why they were not allowed to actually call him the joker, I mean I know it was to do with licensing but they licensed literally every other f***ing character from the batman universe why not him? Lol I did enjoy their work arounds with it like Jeremiah referring to himself as "j no Jack no Joe" in reference to his aliases mistah j, Jack white and Joseph kerr
His acting was good, honestly. He just let the fact that they did Penguin totally wrong get in the way of his judgement. That was the director's/writer's jobs to get right. DeVito just brought their vision to life, and did a damn good job in doing so. But I will agree with him that they screwed up Penguin and did his character terribly. DeVito could've played a great Penguin that was faithful to the source, not this hideous, unnecessary monstrosity.
Eartha was largely considered an acquired taste until that role. People that didn't really like the show or her style tuned in and raved. Brilliant casting and a great performance.
That breakdown on Joaquin in the bathroom was...spectacular. I watched that film three times and I never would have thought about that bathroom scene as a metamorphosis.
Danny DeVito's performance was iconic. Truly tragic. Someone using a "monstrous" performance to hide the torture he'd endured as a child. The performances in Batman Returns are very underrated all around.
it's weird how he is so in tune with the building of a villainous persona as a defense mechanism with other characters but he lets the fact that it's not the "right" penguin get in the way of his evaluation of danny devito lol
DeVitos performance was spot on for what the screen writer wanted. was it true to penguins origin, no. but they wanted him to be a monster like for their interpretation of the Penguin.
@@toadsprout Yes! Exactly. So many dismiss Batman Returns because it's not a pure Batman interpretation. I say, where's the fun in that? Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie BECAUSE of the risks it took, and because of the fresh, original interpretations. Especially with Penguin!
@@eddiegodat8263 Yep! For the story they were telling, DeVito's performance was very compelling. You felt sorry for him, and had a bit of a soft spot for him, and yet, you hated him at the exact same time. That's not easy to pull off as an actor!
I hated his remarks on it..Penguin in the early comics was a 2-bit robber that had little to no nuance or anything remarkable...Danny DeVito truly raised Penguin to a new level. Id even say the Animated Batman series did the same with Mister Freeze. What once was a generic villain of the week gimmick, was turned into art, tragic and exuding emotion. But nah, let's be biased because it's not comic book accurate....
@@bboyg1 Yeah yeah, go ahead and say "Not really". Theres still more great ratings for Joaquin other then "Legendary", So it doesn't matters if you wanna say his Legendary or not
The fact that you get Heath, and Cillian as villains in the same movie alongside Bale as the hero is insane. Oh by the way you also get Oldman playing Gordon, the one cop Batman can trust. Four of the greatest actors of our time.
Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bane is one of my favourite villain performances in a movie. He was well spoken and absolutely terrifying. He (and we as fans) know that Bane isn’t threatened or intimidated by Batman and Hardy bring this to the table.
I just wish they'd given us the actual Bane rather than a catspaw with a wildly different backstory. That said, I don't think Hardy could have pulled off a South American accent and he did an excellent job of playing the character he was given. It just wasn't Bane from the comics in any form.
@@Vherstinae I don’t think actual would have worked. He’s not realistic like the rest of the characters are in this trilogy. (With the exception of Ra’s)
@@Vherstinae you would need perfect casting, perfect performances from that cast and perfect directing for that, probably one best left to the pages of graphic novels like the broken bat saga
I just disagree with the penguin observation. I think Danny did amazing and it was done on purpose by Tim Burton. Danny’s portrayal of penguin is one of a kind like Heath’s joker.
And neither are the true interpretations of the comics, so he celebrates one and berates the other. He also ignores that this was never intended to be the classic and ignored putting that on the producer even though he did that for a few others who did far worse w/what they were given(Mr. Freeze/Two Face/Poison Ivy).
Great description. That's how I feel about it too and why it's an important performance. Joaquin very thoroughly maps out Arthur's pain in almost surgical detail and with raw realism, and you can vividly sense his pain, but once he crossed the line what I feel is fear. When he's leaving Sophie's apartment and It's not clear if he killed her, but the camera is shooting from below and his face is mostly in shadow, I was more afraid of him than of any horror movie character I've ever seen. It really felt like a murderous psycho just walked in the room at that moment. Anyone who calls this a bad performance is an idiot and looks at the world in black and white. They like what they THINK they should like, and believe that everything else is terrible.
Michelle Pfeiffer was amazing as Catwoman. I was immediately sucked in when she entered her home after being thrown. The way she turned into Catwoman was just epic. Best villain/antihero I've seen.
She played 3 characters in that movie, Selina Kyle before transformation, Catwoman and Selina Kyle after transformation and she sold every single second of it
In everyone’s defense, Catwoman was supposed to be a tragic figure. In the original script and novelization Selina Kyle is assumed dead. I remember reading the book in the summer of 1992 before seeing the movie and being bummed that her character died presumably after electrocuting Max Schreck. Imagine my surprise when I saw the movie right before the end credits with Catwoman’s cowl showing up against the Batman signal. Michele Pfeiffer acted like her character was willing to die for her cause. When test audiences saw BR for the first time, they suggested the Catwoman character was too popular to die and it should be obvious that she still lived. A new more upbeat ending was filmed without Michelle Pfeiffer just prior to the movie’s theatrical release.
@@djb1317 I absolutely adore that too! The 3 stages. It's so unexpected, usually you witness the twisted villain remove their mask and greet the familiar face, but there lies underneath..nothing familiar. You aren't greeted by Selina Kyle, you are greeted by catwoman when she takes off her mask, with the face of a far gone Selina Kyle.
Heath's Joker was unique and awe inspiring. No one oozed menace the way Jack did (I mean, of course, it's Jack). But Joaquin was the only Joker I not only rooted for, but cried for.
I thought his comments about him coming to full realization and freedom in the bathroom was spot on. I felt that in that exact moment. I was like here he is...😬
yeah, you're not supposed to root or cry for the Joker though. That character wasn't the Joker, you could have named the movie "sad clown" and it would have been the same

It's so weird to think that Joaquin's joker wasn't a real person, that this whole thing was a performance. Just... how?

He has more screen time than batman in a batman movie. He was born for that role.
Same thing happened to Daniel Craig before the release of Casino Royale. The moral lesson is, give them a chance to see what they'll do.

And it makes me want to watch it again just to see if it is different 😂
Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero....all fabulous Jokers !!
Damnn
Yeah Ledgers Joker was much more unpredictable. Phoenix was more down to earth not so fantastical. Both were great.
*Bane - as he catches Wayne's fists in midair, unbothered:* "Peace has cost you your strength. Victory, has defeated you."
Simple, yet, menacingly true lines, to reserve that room in your opponent's mind. It was mentally all downhill from there, as Wayne began realizing he had gravely underestimated Bane.
Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy will always be the best in my opinion.
"I was born in the dark, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man."
Brilliance all around. Tom did Heath justice.
Damn... Bane really talked like a well-rounded Sith Lord with those Dark Knight Rises lines
@@VonJay Hardy had a less understandable accent at first but they made him change it. I think it was more intimidating
The trilogy also had some humor. Example: The coat scene.

He’s like an instrument in a way that at sometimes the instrument can “sing” without actually hearing audible lyrics.

Should’ve mentioned Aaron Eckhart’s Harvey Dent. Very underrated.
very true
Yes, one of the best performances in the movie
Harvey Dent, can we trust him?
He gives a great performance expressing the duality of Harvey Dent. You can watch him slowly slip as the movie goes on and ultimately succumb to his dark side. His performance was great because he had to play two polar opposite roles.
Jared Leto's Joker is that punching bag we never get tired of beating the crap out of it in all possible ways

Yeah. She did everything right in that performance. I think DeVito's Pengun was great too. They both delivered what was required in the best possible way, maybe even better. The only thing off about that movie was the script.
They did Danny DeVito dirty...his performance haunted me as a kid it was so good
RANDOM FACT: Ancient Egyptian cat owners would shave off their own eyebrows when mourning for their dead kitties. 😎
I had nightmares about the penguin
I also enjoyed Danny’s performance
I enjoyed Christopher Walken in that one. His suit, shoes, white hair, and side eye were great!
Nolan's casting nailed every villain...
Eartha Kitt was a TREASURE. Glad to see this role recognized for how great it is
Yeah, she kind of had a ready made voice for the part.
Why wouldn't it be recognized? It's been recognized for decades.
Kids today have no idea how controversial her casting was back then so when she did the role justice it was a triumph for batman fans.
Affirmative action ✊🏿
Legendary acting by Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker
Not really
@@bboyg1 Joaquin did great.
@@bboyg1
Not really? You're insane
@@bboyg1 Yeah yeah, go ahead and say "Not really". Theres still more great ratings for Joaquin other then "Legendary", So it doesn't matters if you wanna say his Legendary or not
@@bboyg1 Clown
The fact that you get Heath, and Cillian as villains in the same movie alongside Bale as the hero is insane. Oh by the way you also get Oldman playing Gordon, the one cop Batman can trust. Four of the greatest actors of our time.
And aaron Eckhart as dent. What a movie.
Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are just extras to you?!...lol
Heath Ledger as The Joker and Tom Hardy as Bane are simply iconic. They both were just incredible in their roles and they nailed it 100%.
Yeah as a kid I thought he was terrifying
Agreed.
I agree
Never in your itty bitty small meaningless life compare Heath ledger to fat ass devito
Joaquin's acting literally made me feel pain and terror at the same time and gave me actual fear of the character. He did a phenomenal job
Bad joker
@@bboyg1 oh so who do you think is a good Joker. Leto?
@@rizzo-films Well said
@@bboyg1 bruh
Michelle Pfeiffer was amazing as Catwoman. I was immediately sucked in when she entered her home after being thrown. The way she turned into Catwoman was just epic. Best villain/antihero I've seen.
She played 3 characters in that movie, Selina Kyle before transformation, Catwoman and Selina Kyle after transformation and she sold every single second of it
MIAO
I love listening to this guy. He breaks this down wonderfully
Same, I learned a lot from it.
Yeah he’s good
Heath's Joker was unique and awe inspiring. No one oozed menace the way Jack did (I mean, of course, it's Jack). But Joaquin was the only Joker I not only rooted for, but cried for.
Joker is life
I thought his comments about him coming to full realization and freedom in the bathroom was spot on. I felt that in that exact moment. I was like here he is...😬
yeah, you're not supposed to root or cry for the Joker though. That character wasn't the Joker, you could have named the movie "sad clown" and it would have been the same
@@92brunod everyone has an opinion
@@92brunod What do you mean "not supposed to...?" who made that rule, you?
Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman doesn't know - or possibly even care - whether she'll survive, that's why it's desperate and pained.
Thanks for analyzing Eartha Kitt's catwoman. Her role was groundbreaking for the time.
