Islamist threats, Enoch Powell & the end of England | Historian Robert Tombs interview

- Amidst the recurring threats posed by Islamist extremists against MPs, rapidly changing demographics, and the overshadowing influence of foreign wars in Gaza and the middle east on English elections, can England survive as a nation? To answer, Steven Edginton is joined by the historian and author of The English and Their History, Robert Tombs.
“It's not the case since the 17th century that quite small religious minorities have been able to exert a pretty startling political impact. You might think of Guy Fawkes, and the Gunpowder Plotters or you might think of the Puritans and the origins of the Civil War against Charles I. But, we did think, I suppose, that religion, or at least religious extremism had left our politics really, in the 17th century.”
“This was rather like the violence that led up to the Great Reform Bill, in the early 1830s, when you did have major public unrest, rioting, the burning down of the Palace of the Bishop of Bristol. A general sense of the country was on the verge of revolution, and the direct threat of revolutionary violence did really cow Parliament into accepting that it would adopt reform. The House of Lords was the one that stood out against it, but they too were eventually cowed, not so much by popular violence, though that might have happened eventually, but by the King, William IV, deciding that he would, if necessary, create peers to overthrow their majority.”
“This combination of what you might call legitimate protest, though, on a scale that we rarely see so repetitively, and I think in some ways the repetition of it is what makes the impact, mixed with a penumbra of extremism which could include violence, against individual MPs or against Parliament, or indeed, of course, it could lead to terrorist action of the sort we've been warned about as a growing danger. So I think this is a rather different phenomenon from that of the Suffragettes, the Chartists, and it goes back, I think I might say we probably haven't seen quite this since the 17th century.”

He totally underestimates the islamist threat.
Secularized Western civilization is struggling to understand religious people. 'Fanatic' religious individuals are not necessarily villains; rather, they are often misunderstood. While for some, it may seem acceptable to allow abortion, for others, it is deemed necessary to try to compel individuals to save their souls for eternity.
@@croatianhistoryandidentity8261 The problem with making abortion socially acceptable and legal, is that more moral decline follows: trans-agenda, gender-confusion, use of hate speech laws against persons addressing others with wrong pronoun.
Me and enock didn't
Most westerners underestimate the threat of islam, primarily because of ignorance and deception. The deception is to call islam a religion when it is a political ideology and ignorance of the qran and hadiths, and the personal life of bro mo.
💯correct…Islam needs stopping otherwise they will slaughter all British…non Muslims.
Enoch Powell was only wrong on one thing. He didn't think that we would be foolish enough to import Islam.
True, but, in general terms, he covered this when he talked about the moves emerging to prevent integration in UK life: "now we are seeing a growth of positive forces acting against integration, of vested interests in the preservation and sharpening of racial and religious differences..." and then goes on to quote John Stonehouse's speech which uses Sikhs as an example, but we see the exact same thing with Islam in the UK.
He would be shocked by the identity politics we see now.

I'm afraid this speaker is massively under-playing the problem. When I was younger, I would go to a nearby city and see a handful of ethnic minorities but never hear foreign languages spoken. I would never have heard people calling for Jihad on the streets of London for example. When I recently went to that same city for the first time in 20 years, I realised I was the only Caucasian person in the whole street. This was a very large main city centre street at night and there were no other native British people. I don't mind the idea of migration at all as long as it is controlled and as long as it is made clear to everyone who comes that they are expected to learn our language, norms and be subject to our laws. There are laws against calling for violence against Jews here but we seem not to enforce them out of fear of the religious group chanting for it. Enoch Powell might well have made it difficult to discuss migration sensibly but he wasn't wrong. He was just 40 years early. There will be blood in the streets. It's only a matter of time unless we can come to some kind of understanding. In a country where it is impossible to criticise Islam, I don't see how.
Enoch didn't make it hard to discuss migration sensibly, it was the hysterical response in the media to his speech that did that.

The determination to destroy the nation was clearly enshrined in law in 1948. Blair (and the others) merely continued the destruction. No British leader has moved to stop it.

@@jonathanshone5517if not now, when? When it's already too late? The problem is the large scale introduction of an incompatible culture. Previous waves of recent immigration have been from broadly similar cultures (Christian) so assimilation has happened fairly smoothly and quickly. With Islam we have radically different values (consider women's rights or religious tolerance) - will integration happen or is a conflict inevitable? World history suggests cultural conflicts rarely resolve peacefully.
Integration has not occurred whether Christian or otherwise.
@@mrspoon6742 True, some cultures can simply coexist, mostly without problems.
We need a repatriation manifesto from a government. Sick of feeling home sick and I never left.
@@mrspoon6742 It has in Bradford. Jew's, Christians, Hindu, Sikh, Afro Caribbean all get on with each other, socialize, go to the pub, work with each other etc.
That was until the Islamist's turned up in greater numbers & ethnically cleansed certain area's, many moved to different area's of the country through fear. I had personal friend Jew's & Afro Caribbean's who moved to Leeds & Sikh's who moved to Leicester.
Bradford is now left with area's where Muslims live & Non Muslims live in other area's.
There is the odd younger Muslim who do try to integrate but they are abused by their own community for doing so.
They are normally non practicing Muslims who are forced to hide their westernization when their families & older relatives are around.
isl*m has never integrated anywhere in the world
But the sheer scale of immigration is of utterly different orders now. I read that in terms of the Jewish immigration in Victorian times it totalled under 200,000 people over many decades. Yet now we have net immigration of 600-700,000 people EACH YEAR. In my home city we now have one MPs constituency that at the last Census was only 17% white English and in the city as a whole the native English are now below half of the population. Such change cannot be absorbed.
It’s more relevant to quote gross inward migration numbers since that is the subject. Everyone blithely talks of net migration which is misleading and loose talk. The migration numbers in are over ONE million per annum now. These fleeing are most likely the rich and well off and are being replaced by the other end of the spectrum. This should help to focus the brain, if nothing else can. The incoming will not be buying the homes of the departed rich. The rich were likely using private healthcare services, those coming in are heaping on to the waiting NHS’s lists. This will exacerbate in coming 15 years. It will not be a pretty sight. No, Farrago has not the slightest idea what to do about it? Nor does Suella. They have not even understand only deportation to 1945 status quo ante will return old Britain. This is the scale of the problem. By all means vote Reform but don’t descend into utter fantasyland and expect things to change. Happy Weekend.
@user-bs3f. It won’t be absorbed. The white indigenous people will no longer inhabit they will have no option but to move elsewhere. Lee Anderson is being vilified for his opinion on London and Muslims. Who’s ears and eyes are shut tight ?
It is possible that different people can integrate into the country. But it's the scale of the immigration and that many are coming from Islamic countries that have as we see on our streets each week have become a 5th column. THEY are not integrating but live in whole towns that are all Muslim. We see it in Bradford, and they have a huge influence in the city. The police are afraid of them and its plain for all to see.
London is lost to the foreign nationals that have come in and their loyal to their own communities but not to Britan. How many of them sign up for the Police or the Army?
It's come back to bite us and it has gone worse.

Some interesting points. Would agree that a degree of integration is possible in some cases, but even if 100% integration of all immigrants were possible in 100% of all cases, the point is that there is far too much immigration in the first place and it needs to be stopped, and then a lot of people need to be sent back!

Why do these discussions never mention Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi and his 1925 book "Practical Idealism." In his book Coudenhove-Kalergi lays out his plan to create a new European racial/ethnic population using open borders and mixed marriages. He is recognized as a pioneer of European unification and the father of the EU.
Coudenhove Kalergi saw the rootlessness he felt as a means of breeding an easily controllable populace and incorporated this into elitist thinking. It's now being applied. Political Islam however is the unintended wildcard. Funding the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan and KSA funding Salafism their presence in Europe could be as detrimental to the so called elite as it is to the general population.

Ours now gripes about white supremacy while overlooking the simple truth that it has been white men who have created the modern world.
This is the legacy of our failing education system. When I was at school in the 1980s, teachers would spend more time telling us the evils of Keith Joseph than what we were supposed to be learning. Now it seems that the profession has moved on to our colonial sins and white privilege.

National cohesion is not a bad word. It pains me to see what is going on in Britain.
It is hardly surprising that this is the state of our politics, where the families of the nations the comprise the UK are disregard for this foreign issue. What evidence is there for Tombs's assertion that false narratives about immigrants are well-meaning?
He's looking at it from the historical perspective of English history. He needs to look at it from the perspective of the Indian subcontinent and the middle east.

Sunak is importing vast numbers of Indian Hindu's (they vote Conservative). That is not in the UK interest. His first action was to do the Windsor Agreement which was not in the interest of the country he won't be living in. This will work for some (skilled/educated from liberal countries themselves) and others it does not work (mainly uneducated from authoritarian countries). I think that historically immigrants will have wanted to assimilate into a dominant and powerful culture out of respect for that culture and wanting to be part of it. There so much self abasement in the west now that new immigrants( for which there are now many) from cultures that are classically patriarchal aka Muslims that are used to society having strength now just arrive and think that we are a carpet to walk on rather that something to respect and strive to be part of, such as the USA in the later 20th century UK in the earlier-mid 20th century when they were geopolitically much more powerful.
its insulting to the irish who were ex-british !!! jesus britain is lost
"young men" - more accurately fighting age men - a category that exists for a reason - it doesn't take many of them, if they are so determined, to take over a country.
Enjoyed the interview but his opinion on what we here in Ireland think about what we define as Irish is way off...
As a Continental myself, of the Iberian persuasion, I find it baffling that a spoof song called "Sunak, Sunak" hasn't yet be recorded, with a video where loads of prime ministers would be dancing in different coloured suits.
Hypocrisy and lies is the membership fee to academia.
Integration hasn't occurred Commonwealth or not. This is more of the same. What an utter prat Tombs is. We're doomed if this is allowed to be the conversation. That said he sounds utterly irrelevant and a sad echo of the past, a liberal Colonel Blimp, so maybe this liberalism can bw brushed aside.
I am always amazed how some of these "experts" can know so little of the issue they are talking about.
Scary to realize that immigration policies are based on nothing more than unchecked assumptions.
Interesting, but there is Englishness, Scottishness. etc and Britishness. British is inclusive. . The other definitions are ethnic. I am sure Mr Sunak wouldn't call himself English The vast majority of people coming to the Uk are coming for economic reasons ,not cultural or religious ones . The economic upgrade from South Asia and Africa for those coming here is enormous . They and relatives are fully aware of it . This concentrates the mind on money , not ethnicity or culture. However many are still intimately connected to their homelands and often draw the next generation from there. There are substantial groups who have next to no social, linguistic or cultural contact with the host population.
By pretending that peoples who haven't always been here, have, we are creating a rod for our own backs much as happened in Israel with the Palestinian myth.
Anyone who watched Sunak's speech today can only come to one of two conclusions:
a) He didn't want to sack Braverman and Anderson.
b) Every word he said was a lie.
Both can't be true.
“People who want to make their view of Palestine” what?? There is nor has there ever been any such thing as ‘Palestine.’ Get your head out of the sand.
Excuse me, but there would be no trouble If THEY WERE NOT HERE IN OUR COUNTRIES!!!
I do understand why a lot of ppl won’t fight for this country. Well why would they?
Parliament, the Common Law, trial by jury, no taxation without consent - things worth celebrating.
The most successful country of the last Millennium. History remembers the law givers and the common law produced the most representative, free, tolerant, constitutionally stable countries on the planet.
Excellent, nuanced view expressed by Robert Tombs
How is the Monarch non-ideological and non-religious?? It is purely Anglican Protestant.
Why do our politicians and Home Office civil servants continually act to undermine the country?
The main reason that excites pro-Palestinian demonstrations is the antisemitism, the anti-Israeli feelings.
This guy seems fairly out of touch
The Starkey effect!
"Immigration is as English as tea", he says. "It can be said we are a nation of immigrants", he argues next. He proceeds to mention the vikings.
What an ostrich. Intergrated my foot. With all due respect what world does this gentleman live in? This is alarming. Wake up
Policing is decided by political masters. Given free hand, police can easily control any crowd.
