  • John is re-joined by pre-eminent historian Niall Ferguson to analyse the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas. Ferguson argues that due to the nature of Hamas’ urban warfare, tunnel systems and civilian shields, Israel will have a long and difficult campaign ahead. He also points out that the decline in Western support for Israel, particularly in the younger generations, is due to a woke university system propagating Islamist and left-wing viewpoints, attempting to create a moral equivalence between the October 7 terrorist attacks and Israel’s response.
Niall Ferguson, MA, D.Phil., is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior fellow of the Centre for European Studies, Harvard, where he served for twelve years as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History.
He is the author of fifteen books, most recently Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe. His previous book, Kissinger, 1923-1968: The Idealist, won the Council on Foreign Relations Arthur Ross Prize. He is also an award-winning filmmaker, having won an international Emmy for his PBS series The Ascent of Money.

As a nearly 70 yr old eternal student of hope for a real future for your generation and beyond, the current leaders you should follow come by here, Hillsdale College, PragerU, The Manhattan Institute and many more. Jordan Peterson and many more. They are there. The problem is the MSM whose funding depends on the pessimism and propaganda that they push at us. That reflects very badly on what was once the best of capitalism, but has become the worst since the competition of social media which is a free for all that we all need to learn to navigate for what is good buried in its morass.

Assimilation has been a huge issue. In the west your a racist if you expect people to speak the common tongue and you can’t question their culture or religion even if it goes directly against western values. But no when you go Islamic culture, you must observe and respect their culture and practices to a tee or you potentially face imprisonment. The hypocrisy is just unbelievable.

    • @mariannepfly1906
      @mariannepfly1906 6 місяців тому +8

Yes, but I think it is deliberate by the west - to show they are different to those other countries. And I think that’s ok and good, but perhaps now the boundaries have not been taken care of and the result is we see respect lost and a lack of caring for all the people under our umbrella. Capitalist system speaks louder with its networks and links across countries regardless of the local populations.

Multiculturalism has failed and the new immigrants should integrate in their new societies in Western Europe but the Middle East are not democracies. They don't claim to be and claim to have freedom of speech. So you can't really compare a country that is like the UK to the UAE for example. You have to measure them against the standards and values they set themselves. You can't claim to be for religious freedom if you don't want Islam practiced in the West. You have to choose.

    • @ShiaRafidhiAkhbariIslam

    • @zachthornton8337
      @zachthornton8337 6 місяців тому +3

People who immigrate to the UK learn English. There are isolated communities where certain groups, like women do not, because they’re isolated from the wider world. This is a problem. I’ve seen it while canvassing in Bethnal Green but it’s not the rule, far from it. Britain has largely integrated migrants from cultures all over the world. There are problems and some are serious but the racist predictions of Powell and National Front never came to pass. Many on the right struggle to acknowledge it because they don’t want to concede to the idea that a multi-ethnic country is successful. It’s truly bizarre because the only way to turn the clock back is with government tyranny and sectarian violence, which I hope most of us do not want.

Dr Niall nailed it. You can not have a society which generously accepts large volumes of immigrants without asking of them to uphold the norms of the place they themselves chose for a better life. that’s the least to ask of anyone gaining that much favor.
To mention, I’m an immigrant and it churns my stomach when I see immigrants who’ve begged so much to get into one of the western countries, then minutes after haven been granted the chance, it becomes the worst place on earth . Sad!

If the residents of Gaza would "dearly love to get rid of Hamas", then where are the resistance movements to it? There are none and there won't be any. The idea that there's a sizable section of the Palestinian population who want a free and democratic State of their own, side by side with Israel is laughable. If they have issues with Hamas, it's to do with means, not ends. Whatever their stripe, they all agree that Israel should not exist.

The Zionist movement taught people like you to view Muslims as second-class people. Israel isn't a democratic state as it claims to be. "Fundamentals of Finance - Amendment No. 40", sometimes referred to as the Nakba Law, is a 2011 Israeli law which received criticism for limiting freedom of speech pertaining to the founding of Israel and the Nakba. The law affects organizations that are funded, in whole or in part, by the government.
Israel had a part in creating the terrorist Hamas movement to counter Fatah/PLO since the Israeli government viewed Hamas as the lesser evil, all of which backfired on them. To make matters worse, Hamas won control over Fatah in Gaza back in 2007. I think Israel cut off funding Hamas for awhile, but not too long since Benjamin Netanyahu said in March of 2019 in front of his Likuid party that those who oppose a Palestinian state should support the transfer of funds to Gaza, because maintaining the separation between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza would prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Hamas is a tool to get rid of the Palestinians.

      1. justice and peace in the Middle East, delaying the day when Israelis and Palestinians can live within secure borders
      2. relationships with Middle Eastern Christians (see the Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism)
      3. relationships with Jews, since Jews are seen as mere pawns in an eschatological scheme

It’s crazy that the Palestinians claim they were “removed” from their homes. They were promised victory by the Arab leaders in 1948 and then they lost the war! They were offered their own state since 1937 maybe 10 times and have NEVER accepted it and have never built what they could have built. They don’t want a state they chose to remain refugees. Imagine if my Jewish grandparents t who were born in Aleppo Syria was to demand their homes back in Aleppo after being evicted?? Or the millions in Pakistan in 1947? Or the Jewish refugees from Germany and Poland? Please learn some real history and not Arab propaganda

Hi guys, as someone who was born and raised as a muslim in a devout Muslim family, I can tell you right now, Islamic values are totally incompatible with Western values. Muslim loyalties are to Islam, way before loyalties to the country they live in.
Unless there's some sort of draconian autocratic style re-education program of all muslim migrants, Islamic migration is always going to present a serious problem for Western nations.
The problem is that Western countries don't realize the enormous challenge this is going to present in a few decades when Muslims represent 15-30% of Western populations. Western Europe and America will turn into balkanized nations.
Sharia Law has alot of anachronistic and medieval laws like death to apostates, death to blasphemers, death to homosexuals. The Sharia stipulates that anyone who doesn't believe in these laws written by God is an unbeliever.
Difficult to reconcile those values and beliefs with modern society. Also very difficult to see how the religion can be reformed when it considers modernizers as apostates.

I think that the infiltration of western sensivities started when they realized that western culture always tends to support the underdog. They knew that they had the perfect story to turn around. Arab leaders, in wanting to refuse partition by the UN called for the Muslim population to abandon their towns and villages, hoping to get the UN to change the resolution. Only a section left, thus ruining the plan. However, later, in planning the story of victimhood the Palestinians pushed the story that they were expelled from their homes because the Jews wanted their lands. Many in the west became sympathetic. From there it became easy to formulate Terrorist groups.
Moving on to 7/10, many westerners, especially those who never really bought the Palestinian story and those who recognize how hard Israel works in the area of Science and medicine, instantly realized that Radical Islam would have no problem perpetrating the exact same upon them when they got the chance. This section of the population has to make itself heard and to come out in opposition to radicalism.

Because people have literally fought over religion in the past.
Genghis Khan, and the later Yuan Emperors of China imposed restrictive decrees which forbade Islamic practices like halal butchering and forced Muslims to follow Mongol methods of butchering animals. As a result of these decrees, Muslims were forced to slaughter sheep in secret. Genghis Khan referred to Muslims as "slaves", and he also commanded them to follow the Mongol method of eating rather than the halal one. Circumcision was also forbidden. Toward the end of their rule, the corruption of the Mongol court and the persecution of Muslims became so severe that Muslim generals joined Han Chinese in rebelling against the Mongols. Muslims in the past haven't been treated well either by people and leaders of other religions. Stop following the Zionist narrative. It doesn't do you any favors. Wow. I'm a young Jewish woman and I've been a fan of Ayaan Hirsi Ali for almost 10 years, I had no idea her husband was such an amazing person! I'm really happy they've found each other and I am so touched to hear him saying he feels empathy for us as a non-Jew.
It's really touching. I live in a European city where I now feel unsafe and so angry. I had an Arab girl I met just stop talking to or looking at me at a dinner party as soon as someone told her I was Jewish. I didn't express any views on Israel, she just went totally cold and ignored me.
I know it's dangerous and I have never in my life wanted to, but I now feel this sudden bizarre urge to wear a star of David necklace... I want to say I stand in solidarity with other Jews and I want everyone to know I'm a Jew and if they have a problem with that, I don't care. I've never had this desire in my life, never felt particularly Jewish, but I now realise it doesn't matter who I am as an individual. They will always see me as a Jew no matter what - so why should I hide it?
It's very upsetting. I suddenly feel a strange connection to my grandmother, who survived Auschwitz. Obviously I never EVER experienced anything like that, but I feel a certain sadness and determination that I saw in her. I'm not going to cower and hide and I'm not going to bow down to this nonsense.

Gazans went out in demonstrations against Hamas rule in 2019 . The media talked about these demonstrations, but analysts did not focus on their importance. As a result, the people of Gaza felt that they were besieged from two sides, Israel and Hamas, and that the Israeli siege was not a siege on Hamas, but rather on the population. On the other hand, it is a cordon to protect Hamas from other Palestinian forces.

Good to see at least once sensible and measured comment here🙏 The Palestinians are being shafted by everyone. They were kicked out of their land, as a result of genocide on Jewish people in Europe, and stuck with terrible leadership they can do nothing to change. Niall has a tendency to ignore previous abuse/oppression in his historical commentary and start from an artificial baseline, ignoring any previous state of affairs that doesn't support his conclusions. I've read most of his excellent books but often disagree with his conclusions. He is certainly centre right wing in his politics but seems unable to reflect on his own bias as well as he researches history. The UK and US have been undermining any attempt at secular democracy in the Arab states for decades. Read "The Great War for Civilisation" by Robert Fisk for an impartial study on it. To say that there is a clear right and wrong on either side of the Isreali-Palestinian leadership led violence is crazy and idiotic. The decent people in this area on both sides and Lebanon too, are the victims of ideologically driven violence perpetrated by extremists on either side and are not at all helped by the great powers either who have vested interests in not solving the issue peacefully. May all living beings live at peace🙏

Thank you for your serious and understanding comment, and I agree with you. What I always mean to say is the necessity of understanding beyond our ideological and national biases. Understanding is a different issue from what we like and what we hate. The basic question is not: (Who are you with? Or: Who are you against?) but the question: (What is this thing? What is that?) I have been with the Palestinians for a long time, and I expected this popular movement sympathetic to them for a long time because I know the absurd injustice they are subjected to, and because this is real and realistic, I knew that no human being would accept to close his eyes to what It happens to the Palestinians, even by the people of Europe, despite the European media and politics that have described them as terrorism, barbarism, and extremism since the seventies. However, I knew, also from a long time ago, the damage that Hamas would cause to the Palestinians and not to Israel alone.

Regarding the book by Robert Fisk that you are mentioning, I have read it. I admire Fisk. He is well acquainted with the Palestinian issue, but I did not finish the book, and I will tell you why: Because he takes Osama bin Laden seriously. I do not, because bin Laden and Al Qaeda are a game for Filling the news, media, and popular imagination with fictional stories that distance them from the real issues. By the way, do you know the meaning of the word (Al-Qaeda), which is an Arabic word? It does not have any meaning to the Arab listener. So, why did Bin Ladin use this word as the name of his organization? He did not do that. The Americans did because the word al-Qaeda is the dictionary translation of the English word “fundamentalist”!! It is unreasonable for Bin Laden to describe himself as a fundamentalist, but the West is playing a symbolic game in politics because of its control over the players

I disagree with Niall's assessment regarding "the unholy alliance" of the so-called young generation leftists with Islamists. Currently, the majority of public opinion is pro-Palestinian simply because Palestinians are victims. It has nothing to do with Islam or Islamists. If anything, this is expression of humanitarian and humanistic values. At the same time Israel behaves as if hammer for the only tool in its toolbox and every problem was a nail. This is not helping. Israel cannot eradicate that fly with the hammer, and Israel will cause a considerate damage (including to itself) in the process.

Naturally, when I raise such issues, I am written off as a racist or similar twaddle. But now, to my horror, I watch as level-headed, no ax to grind, commentators such as Ferguson and Anderson are reaching similar conclusions. Maybe Oct 7th was intended as a trap/provocation, but that's unlikely given the state of violent disunity Israel was in at that time. More likely, as some IDF officer said, Hamas thought Israel was too divided to respond and the US too weak to show any support.
When Gilead Shalit was abducted, Israel started to respond in Gaza without calling up the reserve, but was then distracted by an escalation in the North.
This IDF officer said Hamad didn't expect the calling up of the reserve or the sudden unity displayed by Israelis of all type. In a way, Hamas succeeded too well.
But this unity is from God.
