warm water and clarifying really help with low porosity hair! Im low porosity 4b-c, fine-medium strands, medium porosity . I actually wash with shampoo 2x a week but clarify 1x/week. it was a ganechanger for me to wash more than 1x a week, contributing to me gaining about 1 inch a month, even when wearing my hair out the whole month. I think also it was way better for my scalp - it rarely itches anymore. I think low porosity hair benefits so much from the more frequent contact with water. however, i rarely need to refresh during the week - i only use a curl cream to style. if i do a wash and go, i will use a leave in and gel. i also started using an oil blend instead of straight shea butter. i usually use lightweight products that have a lot of moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or squalene or argan oil or aloe vera, etc etc. I avoid products with coconut oil AND shea butter high in the list. Oh and hydrolyzed wheat protein is a no in my stylers - everything protein free. Once a month I will use aphogee 2 minute keratin reconstructor. I dont use heat. I cut off the color/heat damage I did have a couple weeks ago.
Agreeed. It’s so opposite of how I was raised to put grease in my hair, etc. My hair does better when I wash it twice a week, especially since I’m in the gym six days a week. Clarifying once a week I do the exact same thing. Although I don’t think that there’s such thing as over, clarifying low porosity 4B hair
The African Pride prepoo has castor oil in it so I can’t use it (I’m allergic to castor oil). Finding another prepoo (that’s not a DIY situation) has been so so hard
@@CJAmaraLet it be known you can also use regular conditioners for pre-poo. I prefer my regular conditioner than the deep conditioner for detangling. Like she said, most regular conditioners don’t do anything on low porosity mainly because of larger amounts of humectant penetrating your hair I believe. Correct me if i’m wrong, but regular conditioner is literally just made to sit on the hair strand.
So no matter how many videos you watch you still have to find what works for your hair. There are some great tips in this video but it will still vary by density as well as porosity. As a low to medium density, fine strand, 4b, low porosity girlie, i double wash every 2 weeks, as every week was too much for my hair. I deep condition with heat every wash alternating protein and moisturizing conditioner. Use a regular conditioner in the shower that helps me detangle after my wash. My hair will be a frizz ball overnight if i just use conditioner and oil after DC. Mousse and aloe or flax based gel with every style is a must because it will not last more than two days if i don't and i need to refresh my hair about every 4th day so i wash on Monday, style on tuesday, refresh on sunday, refresh again on wedneday and by the time i get to the following monday for another wash day my hair is thirsty again for a full wash day. It's a lot but i trim 1x annually professionally and my stylist is impressed with how my consistency pays off. Took of maybe an inch during my last trim earlier this month. So long winded version of find what works for your hair😊
As a low porosity girl, I absolutely use moisturizing shampoos. I think that’s where hair type *does* come in bc since I’m 4c I need moisture balance/maintenance in b/w clarifying shampoos. Using clarifying shampoo everytime I wash my hair would make it stripped, dry, & brittle. If you do wash n gos often, it would make sense to use clarifiers often. I wear braids a lot, so I go for moisturizing shampoos more.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing that! That’s thing about hair what may work for some, may not work for all. Moisturizing shampoos would make my hair greasy. I don’t do wash and gos often. I’m mainly in mini twists or braids.
My hair has changed porosities (high now normal) since i became a straight natural…i def use both a clarifying shampoo then a moisturizing shampoo. I also deep condition with heat every wash. This was my same routine with high porosity hair….i would never in my life cowash.
Thank you so much for this video. Everything you listed is definitely all the issues I’ve been having with my hair and have been at my wits end. I feel equipped with some knowledge and ready to go tackle the problem. Thank you so much.
I used the LCC water, cantu avocado curl cream, and another product that’s a cream as well too and I actually get a week and a day or two of moisture. It took me seven years to have moisture that last more than a day or two in my hair. I also do twists not twist outs and sometimes other styles.
I would have to used a deep conditioner on my hair as well because regular conditioner doesn’t do anything for me it just sits on my hair and I would be using warm water for my hair all the way through because I have low porosity hair as well these tips are definitely a big help thank you so much
Hello, I’m new to your channel. I recently cut my dreads off after 5 years and staying natural, I’ve learned so much about my hair and hair porosity. I have low porosity thick with coils and curls 😫🤣 but I’m loving my hair way more now than I did with my dreads. I’m still learning but have totally embraced the look.
I started using deep conditioner now too because I was using light leave in conditioner and shea butter to lock it in, but it just felt like the shea but went to my roots and didn’t moisturize my ends and I would wake up the next day and my hair would be dry frizzy and the ends were shedding a lot. So now I use Carols daughter products and my hair loves it. My hair holds moisture on the en side but not the outside
(I have ow porosity with fine strands) I use Aussie Moist 3 min miracle after using the Creme of Nature Argan oil shampoo. I don’t know the science behind this but my hair was frizzy , stiff and wasn’t absorbing moisture. I suspect its either the silicones in the Aussie moist or the fact that I used 2 moisturising products 🤷🏽♀
Hey Shanique you look beautiful as always tfs this video it's very helpful . I find that using the pre shampoo from African pride has really help me with a achieving a softer texture to my hair I like it alot😊
Oil based heat protectors work well. Tres semme has also worked for me aswell. Be sure to to comb your hair as you blow dry and try to use medium heat and don’t hold it on one spot. I also reccomend sectioning your hair to avoid tangling.
Hi Shanique I have followed you for years when I first went natural. I learned a lot from you. When you blow dry do you still use the Loc method first then the heat protector?
Personally I use a leave in and heat protectant oil before blow drying. Check out my favourite hair products video(it’s just before this one) I share everything I use and when
If it’s available to you in Canada if you like the crème of nature you would love Design Essentials Honey Créame shampoo sulfate free & it’s moisturizing. I’m also low porosity as well 😊
Im new to your channel 🫶🏻 im currently experiencing protein overload its hard but ill get through it 🥲 Im learning more about low porosity hair as i have it myself . Do you have any tips ?
Is tgin rose water a good shampoo i can use for when in protein overload or do i just use a clarifying shampoo in the mean time with a deep conditioner ?
For now only use products that contain moisture. Stay away from protein. Deep condition every time you wash your hair. I’m not familiar with that shampoo. If it doesn’t have protein then you should be fine.
It doesn’t have any , do i keep moisturizing even after i get over protein overload ? Or do i slow down on moisturizing my hair a lot ? Do i apply a protein treatment how often ? Im sorry if im asking so much questions im new to this 🥹
@@ShaniqueBuntyn thank you so much for the advice . Can you look into the loreal hyalouronic acid shampoo and conditioner for me ? Im thinking about using that one next . I just want to be sure it doesn’t have protein in it . Can i still heat style ? I heat style about 1-2 times a week or do i need to cut back ?
A good moisturiser for my low porosity hair is a water-based herbal spray, all natural and gets rid of flakes instantly and makes my hair shine, feel healthier and more moisturised.
Thank you so much. The ends of my hair is always dry no matter how much I moisturizer. When I wash my hair it is so curly on the end I have a hard time combing it. Any advice for this?
When you moisturize your hair, always use an oil on top of the moisturizer so that way your hair stays hydrated. Also, when is the last time you got a trim?
Yes you definitely can. If you go from low to high.. you possibly have damaged your cuticles. Have you been using a lot of heat? High maintenance hairstyles? Added dye to your hair?
@ShaniqueBuntyn aww, that's terrible news. I literally don't do anything special. I wash weekly and do the loc method and then plait my hair. I wfh and rarely go out, so little manipulation is involved 😢
Interesting.. doesn’t sound like you damaged your hair. It’s the first time I’m hearing low porosity turn into high porosity without damaging the cuticles. But I just read online that sometimes our hairs porosity can change as it grows. Usually it returns to low. So maybe you are just in a season of high porosity.
Here because my daughters hair refuses to get wet meanwhile my hair absorbs all the water 😢 Conditioners also seem to sit on her hair, this is indicative of low porosity right?
@@ShaniqueBuntyn Most definitely I peeped that when I kept doing the lc or lco/loc method every other day. It weighs my down bad. I go for the Jamaican mango and lime butter I just got back on using that and it’s been doing work wonders for my hair I use it 2-3 times a week

yes you are!
Can you have normal porosity? Or does it have to be low or high?
Yes you can have normal porosity. But most people either have high or low
Take a clean hair strand or few and put it in water. If it sinks, low. Floats, high. Suspended in the middle, normal.
If you don’t mind me asking. How did you get moisture overload?
By only using moisturizing products and zero protein over a long period of time
Also keeping ur hair in styles that keep it wet for long periods of time.
when you say use deep condtions are we using this in place of a leave in?
In place of a conditioner

@ShaniqueBuntyn Like blowdrying or flat iron?
Can somebody tell me how often do we use the lco method please ?
About 1-2x a week or whenever needed
I can’t use alo Vera because it closes the cuticle I’m low po plus it’s protien
Interesting. I haven’t any issue with aloe. The prepoo I mentioned in the video is a rinse out product so it shouldn’t affect your hair.
