  • In this video, we explore the Fanal Forest on the island of Madeira - one of the most popular photography destinations on the island of Madeira. This forest is known for its eerie feel. Due to the foggy conditions and lack of signage, it's easy to get lost in this forest, but don't let that dissuade you from exploring. I'd recommend you pin on Google Maps exactly where you parked the car and agree with your travel buddies to meet back there if you become separated. In this video, we take some stunning photographs of the forest, and get lucky as the fog begins to clear towards the end, providing us with a huge surprise to see clearly what we'd spent the morning walking through. A must see if you plan to visit Madrira, but don’t forget layers as this pocket of the island does get very cold, even in summer when we visited!

Hi Dave, thank you for your kind words 🙏 The shorts were definitely an error as the previous days on the island had been incredibly hot, I was lulled into a false sense of security, but worth it because of the beauty!!

Thank you for your kind words yet again. Your note of how great it would be for a horror movie has sent me on a Google search to see if one's already been filmed there - but it doesn't look like it - feel like Hollywood may be missing a trick! Cheers ☕☕

How are you doing mrs Caroline thank you for sharing your trips with us, encouraging us to explore places unknown to us, learn new information. As always iam gathering main information about places you visited briefly here it’s Portugal located in African plate same 600 km off north of African coast , Madeira belongs away ethnically, culturally, economically and politically to Europe. Fanal forest is one of laurissilva forest ,UNESCO world heritage site . Known for its beauty and ecological importance. Best time to visit it in early morning. Fanal forest is one of Madeira large laural forest , located in north west of island . Listed as UNESCO world heritage since 1999 , as natural heritage of humanity. This dense forest also protected by Madeira natural park since 1982. There are mysterious fog in forest among 600 years old trees creating scences straight out of movie .

Hi Kahtoon, I am well thank you, I hope you are too. Like your research suggests is best, we too visited Fanal Forest early in the morning and it paid off as the fog thinned out as the morning went on. The island really bigs up its Laurisilva Forest, but it makes sense as it's the largest surviving area of it... I want to say in the world. I've only been fortunate enough to visit 3 African countries, but I'd agree that it feels much more European than African. Not been to mainland Portugal though so not sure how it compares (yet!)

    Once
we got lost there, the fog got so tick we couldn`t even see one meter away, funny story we got saved by the sound of the frogs that lead us back to the pond and we found the way back ...magic place even our friend is now scared for life .

Ooooooh the frogs is a clever move. Sadly we couldn't hear any croaking away, but it's funny how we've all developed our own little ways of coping with the disorientation of the place. Agree about it being a magical place - just sorry your friend is so scared!

Very spooky and mysterious, bet Halloween is good up there! Be careful of those cow-pats if the visibility gets too low, you might be glad you're wearing the shorts after all. I can see why Andy wanted to go there, I bet he loved the contrast between the fog and dark trees and got some great photographs. Nice to see some of them in the video! Unreal how things looked when the fog cleared, it looked like an entirely different place - think I prefer the heavy fog though. It really is a strange feeling when you start to become disorientated due to low visibility, I've experienced it a few times up in Scotland and on one occasion had to head back a little way to make sure I was going in the right direction. This place is definitely going on my list.

Never thought about Halloween celebrations up there but now that you've said it - heck yes! So pleased the very few episodes I've shown so far have made you want to visit the island - hopefully you can get a good deal outside the peak school holidays too as it's so popular with Brits (but also really easy to escape them too!)

Heya. I was there late July, early August which is their peak summer season. For November, just be sure to check the web cams as most days there'll be rain somewhere on the island whilst it's dry, or even sunny somewhere else.

You'll hopefully get to see the natural pools in Porto Moniz next weekend as that was next on our itinerary. We tried to do many of the things you've listed from your research and ironically the video that's come out today of Levada dos Cedros, we began at Curral Falso. We obviously have the same taste in things when picking out bits and pieces in research that appeal to us!
