My friend's dad also had a '71 Wagoneer with the 350/350 combo. It was painted by the factory in GM Lime Gold, which Jeep used only in '71. Same year as and same paint color as my grandfather 's Nova.
Dang Jack, I want one. I had the next generation Jeep Wagoneer (1971-360 Buick, 4bbl Rochester Carb) That thing will pull anything, and climb over anything. By the way the holes next to the lights were blanked out There was nothing there but a cover. In the military there were used to carry small weapons like rifles, ammunition, etc" we called them Weps (short for Weapon Carrier). Great find, I'm jealous, everything where I live is all rusty. When I had my Wagoneer I lived in NY and that was kind of rusty, from the salt they put on the roads in the winter. You picked a great ride. It's a great first truck, if you want to put 33's on it you're going to have to put a mild lift, maybe 3", you'll have to change the gear ratio's to match the tires, so I wouldn't change the rear end until you're sure of the tire size.

My oldest son got an old delivery 6 cyl Chevy half ton pick up from my auto parts store. I bought two and my wife drove one. Good reliable rigs. First thing son did was put in a sound system. Those Jeeps were terrific get yourself a set of of 32 gumbos and you're exactly right with the Chrome Steel wagon wheels change out the seat get yourself some buckets in a console take out the AM radio put in a nice stereo add new speakers to the doors in behind the seats Above All Else you're going to need to take out that work box and put in a roll bar
You're a terrific dad this is something that Jack is going to remember for the rest of his life how you two together rescued this old truck and brought it back to life and wow what a nice truck to rescue

M ysecond vehicle growing up was a 1971 J4000 Jeep PU 360 4 speed it was a real stump puller as my Dad said at the time. He was so impressed that he bought himself a Brand New 1978 J 10 258 six with the 400 GM auto w/quadra trac as it was called in those day's. Best to ya guy's awesome stuff here.
J30 is 3/4 ton j20 is half ton we just restored one. Some parts are hard to find for it. especially tailgates good luck can’t wait to see you guys get working on it. If you have any questions message me, and if you want a newer look the one pc. Aluminum grills fit right over that front end and covers up those openings on the core support.

In 1969 the J3000 refers to the wheelbase length not the payload capacity. In 1974 they were changed to J10 and J20 which refers to the payload capacity. I own a 73’ J4000 which just means it is the 132” wheelbase.
That is a great first truck. It was the truck to have when I was Jacks age. You get it running and you could sale it for way more then you paid. One thing for sure is gas mileage is terrible. I’m looking forward to seeing it on the road.
This is a gem. The parts you can swap on from newer models go until the early 90’s on that platform. I LOVE that early grill, but what I find amazing, is later, AMC put a plastic more traditional grill over that, and put square headlights in those round lead light holes!

The truck ought to be a great for Jack's first vehicle. Believe it would be easier to find the 9 inch stump with the matching ratio over repair parts for a posi dana. Or you could buy a ring and pinion and a locker for the 9 inch that you already have

Thats going to be a blast to drive Jack and great in the woods my first car was a 1966 jeep wagoneer with a jeep 327 and a turbo 400 with a spring lift and 33s under it I pulled it from a field and fixed it with help from my dad and his buddy it was a beast in the woods had alot of fun times with it and Jack you are going to love it try to keep it as long as you can for the good times.

Depends on when you want to draw the line. When it turned into a Chrysler, was it still a jeep… they made smaller trucks into the 90’s if I’m not mistaken.
That old Jeep definently has potential as the body and mechanicals are sound. Your biggest challenge appears to be the differential which can be rebuilt for a minimal cost as compared to buying a good used truck from a dealer. I have a 1966 Jeep J - 2000 that was my Dad's and is still my plow truck in winter and I had to do a whole lot more work to it than you will have to do to yours. Should make a great Dad/Son project. Good luck with it !

I had a J20 truck that would go anywhere, with the quadratrac. Those dauntless Buick 350 engines were tough. Great first truck for Jack!

If it is a 28 spline the owner of that salvage yard has a complete 9” third member I can buy! That will most likely be our solution for now
