You have a rather nice M38A1 former military jeep. The things on the back are called bumperetts. The underside of the hood still has the brackets for a shovel. She should have a square plate on a frame cross member under the bed that is the reinforcement plate for a machine gun mount. You also have a set of very cool old school lockout hubs. The seats are out of a boat. Great little jeep!
I think it was yesterday that the "Nick's Garage" channel posted about a 1947 Willies Jeep. They worked on it and gave a lot of information about them. I think the other shifters are for a PTO and the hoops on the back are for Jerry Cans.
The M38A1 was the military version of the civilian Jeep CJ-5. The Willys M38A1 was a light military vehicle produced between 1952 and 1971. The M38A1 was the first Army jeep to use the Willys Hurricane F-Head 134 inline-four engine, a pretty cool Jeep. Production totaled 101,488 units (80,290 domestic / 21,198 foreign sales).
I love it . Success with no brakes clutch u got put toe under pedal kick it in. He says success. Shoot ya . You're there man.. What else does one need.
Sorry for your loss prayers to you and the family. My first Jeep was an 82 CJ5 soft top 4 cylinder with a 6” lift on 35’s. Named it Little Rascal. My dad didn’t like the soft top noise when he drove it so he found a 88 Jeep YJ Wrangler 4.0 transplant 4” lift on 32’s. When he couldn’t get up in it very good he drove it over to my house, handed me the keys and said “here boy you drive it it’s too much to get into”. He left it to me when he went to be with the lord. My son when he was 4 told everybody that it was his Jeep so one day it will be. I named her Ole Gurl after the president of the Jeep club I’m in she asked me “what’s the ole gurls name” lol. Name your Jeep and customize it the way you want and if someone complains their not a real jeeper. It always about what you like. Good luck and good fun and watch out for that flex there you might break something 😂.
Throw rhat roll bar in the scrap pile. A real jeep don't need it, drive wise and safe no stump/rock humping. The ebgine is a F head one valve in head one in block. Air cleaner is oil bath mounts on fire wall. Have fun. I love my 42 ans 43 mil jeep,
Wrong kid, those are bumpers. It's amazing that you people are so ignorant that you don't even realize that there are no brakets or bottom to hold gas cans. Not to mention, they are not the correct dimensions for a gas can.
Nooooo don’t go to the dark side Kent!! You know how those Jeep owners get!! 😂 When you pulled up on that rock with the front tire I lost it. Sorry for your families loss. 🙏
Kent, you really put a big smile on me !! -- Your intro was great ! -- I'm a few years older than the Willy's -- But I did own a 1928 Overland Whippet which probably was the papa-engine to the Willy's 4 cyl. flathead -- up draft carb and vacuum fuel pump -- Your engine is practically indestructible -- Have Fun But Use Your Noggin, Too ! -- Bless You, The Boys and Your Wife
So many things you could do with that Jeep! First thing I would do is get a new fuel tank, and fuel lines, then get new tires (KO2's or KO3's). Then some rock sliders instead of the aluminum running boards. Get her street legal, then play with options. 4 Wheel Parts can help you find lots of stuff for that thing, I'm betting. That Hurricane 4 is a beast, even if a bit underpowered. Similar to the inline 6 that Jeep used to run, all but indestructible. Nearly bullet proof. The hoops on the back are called "Bumperettes". They needed some kind of bumper system, and that's what they came up with. Even my '87 Wrangler (First year model for the Wrangler) had those on the back. f course I had to get an aftermarket off-road bumper for it. Which I'd recommend, front and rear. Those "Bumperettes" are pretty much useless. But they are traditional. And possibly a front winch, too. Also, watch for other Jeep owners placing a rubber duck on your Jeep. If they like it, many will give you anonymous duck. "Jeep Ducking began in Ontario in 2020 when a Jeep owner decided to do something to brighten both her and a stranger’s day. Possibly a 2-3 inch lift, not a lot of lift, with a shorter roll bar/cage that would allow me to add an original style canvas top and some canvas doors. A front winch, and front/rear off-road bumpers, and a rock slider instead of the running boards. Probably replace the tires with KO2's (Good off-road capability, with good on-road handling and minimal road noise). Not sure if that one had a PTO capable of running a front winch or not. Some did. Some also had a rear PTO with output shaft to attach things to. Guy I went to high school with had one with a PTO driven front winch. Could drag that thing with all 4 tires locked up as far as you had winch lines to drag it. Mud, snow, dry dirt, rock, didn't matter. If the engine would run, it would pull it up a tree. That didn't happen, because carburetors don't really work well when tilted past a certain point. Things only weigh 3,800-4,000 pounds. The PTO winch was rated at around 8,000 pounds. And that was with the Hurricane 4 engine! Buddy decided to upgrade to a larger, V8 engine. Think it was a Buick 305 from a wrecked 1979 Regal. Made that thing a full on Beast!

Cool Jeep! Dad had a '46 Willys CJ2. Part of the charm of the thing was, if you had a mishap, the part you dented was already bent. When you stepped on the breaks, you had to hold tight 'cause it would really pull to the left. He decided to restore it, or at least fix it up a little, and we never rode it again. The top of the hood sat really low. The drive shaft was this little piece of steel, but was REALLY HEAVY. One icy day, Mom left for work before the rest of us had to leave. Then she came back in. Her little yellow car was sitting out in the road with a door open. Once she got off the gravel driveway, it could only spin a wheel but could not go anywhere. The door was open 'cause she could not get enough grip on the ice to push it shut. She came in by sitting on the ice and schooching herself to the edge of the road. To recover the car, we tied a rope to the front bumper of the Jeep, and I sat on the front while Dad carefully crept the Jeep out onto the road. Then I tied the rope to the back of the little yellow car. The rope was long enough for the jeep to get all 4 wheels onto the gravel driveway before it was pulling the car. We called off work and school for the day. This would have been '77 or '78.
I noticed those hinges on the grill but there is not hinges on the frame for them to pivot on. You're probably right, all I know is that it is titled as a 54.
I don’t know much of your channel but being it is a m38a1 I hope you go pretty original on the parts and color scheme if you decide to fix her up. Nice jeep! I put a 1989 Chevy s10 4.3lv6 in mine and she moves now. Just need to get an overdrive for my T90 trans so I can go over 60mph a little easier
Sorry for the loss of POP. Glad you got it running and took the boys for a spin around the field. Hope to see more of the jeep in the future. Take care and stay safe out there. GOD BLESS Y'ALL

Hey Kent, first time I am seeing your channel. The algorithm pushed it to me because I have a newer Wrangler unlimited Sahara 4xe. I also had a good friend in the 70's that bought a early 70s CJ5. It was amazing. He would fearlessly wail up steep sand hills and make it all the way up. Can't have any hesitation or you don't make it. We were in our 20s. Now I'm in my 70s and have a nice well appointed Jeep Wrangler, however it is a beast dressed in nice clothes. 😁😅

So if the Comet is "Pearl," that should be "Barney." (Couldn't help myself. Lol) Definitely started life in the military, I drove it's successor the Kaiser. Those are little bumpers in the back, on either side of the hitch.
@@SpeedBumpGarage Later in the video I noticed at least some of that cage tied into the thin sheet steel of the bodywork too. I can get behind the idea of a roll bar on it, especially since you do plan on retrofitting seatbelts, but it'd have to be tied to something structural to be worth having.
You can get almost any jeep part you want from Kaiser Willys website. I'm currently rebuilding a 43 military jeep. They've supplied every part that I have needed.
My uncle graduated from K State veterinary school probably in early 60's I lived in Manhattan KS as a kid so interesting how paths cross in life. Love the jeep!
KENT THOSE BRACKETS ON THE BACK HOLD A GAS CAN AND A WATER CAN. THATS WHAT A FRIEND OF MY USED THEM FOR. YOU KNOW THE OLD SQUARE SHAPED CANS. THEY MADE THE BACK LOOK COOL ANYWAYS, LOL. NICE JEEP WOULD LOVE TO OWN IT.
I had a willys world war 2 army jeep whit replica machine gun back because in Sweden you need special licens for that kind of weapons one time i misdin that jeep. I got stopped by the police many times because the reblica. I sold it 10 years ago for i was in a economy crisis i missing that time. Besy part was police officers face when they saw the replica was a replica and could not do nothing. 2 weeks after i sold it wreck it in a traffic accident with a 18 Wheeler. New buyer survivid with only smal injuries.
I hope you keep that Jeep for generations to come. With your kids it is a 4 generation JEEP. Doesn't need a lot of power to go everywhere and Jeeps have been everywhere. I would trade my 64 tbird for a good running old M38 or older jeep.
what i do know about the Jeep community..The options are endless and a deep wallet will help you keep in tune and in good standing..One of the best things i saw was a spare tire cover on the back of a Black Jeep that said..The Black Jeep of the Family
I had a 61 willys jeep truck , green and she was a bear to drive in two wheel drive but four wheel she drove like the old lady she was power steering because fronts pulling and driving was great. Running the woods trails was a weekend fun time.
It's amazing how ignorant you kids are. How are those for gas cans when there's no bottom to keep said gas can from falling through? Those are bumpers.
Just seems crazy to me that your seated on top of the Gas tank should you use the factory setting..That doesn't even seem right but guess not a whole lot of thought was put into safety back then
It's amazing how many simpletons think the bumperettes (bumpers) on the rear were for Jerry Cans. 1. There's no bottom to keep the Jerry Can from falling through 2. There's no tie down bracket for said Jerry Cans. 3. They aren't the sam dimensions as a Jerry can. 4. The military never mounted Jerry can holder ti the frame. They were always mounted on the body.
I couldn't wait to be part of the jeep community myself and I was happy to be out of the community because I didn't realize part of doing jeep things was fixing rusted frames but if it wasn't for that oh yes I did like my old YJ jeep
I love these jeeps and their history. my family has had many different Willys jeeps. The M38A1 is the Military version of the jeep. The hoops on the back are called bumperettes. They aren't made to hold anything, they are just extensions to the bumper. a jerry can and a spare tire would be carried above them with their own mounts. The roll bar that is there looks like junk to be honest. it could be used for a bikini top and not much more. in a roll over accident it would provide little to no support. lots of people put seat belts in these jeeps. Since you are new to jeeps keep in mind, if there were to be a roll over incident without a proper roll bar, the seat belts would keep you strapped in and may do more harm than good. not trying to be scary but its just good to be aware of with these old jeeps. Also we run our jeeps on 87 octane with no issue. The center shift knob is your 4 wheel drive, and the far right is the high/low range. the plate on the dash on passenger side may still have the shift diagram on it. for 4 wheel drive you will need to make sure you manually engage the front hubs. yours look like there are levers that lift and then you turn the hub, then push the levers down to lock it in place.

The things on the back is where you mount Jerry cans. Usually gas but occasionally water as well

Awesome! I will hopefully have another video out on it in a few weeks
I would trade my 64 tbird for a good running old M38 or older jeep.
not often you see someone deliberately pressure washing inside of a vehicle. :)
Lol it needed it
T90 don't put lots power n um. 360 fresh rebuild trashed 2 decent ones. T18 4 speed wot low 1st. No problems.
what i do know about the Jeep community..The options are endless and a deep wallet will help you keep in tune and in good standing..One of the best things i saw was a spare tire cover on the back of a Black Jeep that said..The Black Jeep of the Family
Kent,
I'd call that purple camo.
lol pretty much
Brackets in back are for 5 gallon gas cans.
Thanks!
I have parts. I’m in Skiatook
Thanks!
GREAT video Kent. As always can’t wait for the next one. Y’all be good and stay safe!!
Thanks 👍
I had a 61 willys jeep truck , green and she was a bear to drive in two wheel drive but four wheel she drove like the old lady she was power steering because fronts pulling and driving was great. Running the woods trails was a weekend fun time.
Kent the things on back holds the military style 5 gallon gas cans
Thanks!
Wrong kid, those are bumpers. You kids really shouldn't comment on things you know nothing about.
Brackets on back are for the gas cans
It's amazing how ignorant you kids are. How are those for gas cans when there's no bottom to keep said gas can from falling through?
Those are bumpers.
Just seems crazy to me that your seated on top of the Gas tank should you use the factory setting..That doesn't even seem right but guess not a whole lot of thought was put into safety back then
Jeep things constantly buying fuel and listening to your vehicle rott in the driveway.
I found your page from a recommendation by Daniel Arms Arms Family
That is for gas cans
Wrong kid, those are bumpers.
It's amazing how many simpletons think the bumperettes (bumpers) on the rear were for Jerry Cans.
1. There's no bottom to keep the Jerry Can from falling through
2. There's no tie down bracket for said Jerry Cans.
3. They aren't the sam dimensions as a Jerry can.
4. The military never mounted Jerry can holder ti the frame. They were always mounted on the body.
What a loser posting up and hating on this kid! Who hurt you bro? Tell us? Little baby. Cry those tears into a jerry can bum.
I couldn't wait to be part of the jeep community myself and I was happy to be out of the community because I didn't realize part of doing jeep things was fixing rusted frames but if it wasn't for that oh yes I did like my old YJ jeep
That's too bad! I had mine on the lift last week and luckily my frame looks pretty good
I love these jeeps and their history. my family has had many different Willys jeeps.
Thanks for the info Matt! Good point on the roll bar. I will have another video on the Jeep soon.
I hope some one said those are for extra fuel cans
Yep!
Yes, about half a dozen ignorant kids said that.
The little thing on back bumper are gas can holders
I honestly don’t see any of these modern cars sitting as long as one of these jeeps and then starting up again one day.
Gerry cans of gas
Thanks!
