BOSS ME-80 Review

  • The BOSS ME-80 is a very versatile multi-effects pedal with a ton of options and limitless potential. Having owned the BOSS ME-50 for quite some time, I just knew that this was going to be awesome. However, I assumed that it was the same unit with more effects. Not the case, this thing has more functions by far and has won hands down against the POD XT Live ME Pedal in my opinion.
Although this is not a deep dive into controls and functions, it does at least give an honest first look from a guitarists/home studio owners point of view.

I have been using the ME80 since it first came out.I sold my ME70 to get my first one.Yes I have two, one on my concert pedal board and one on my Small Venue/Club pedal board.Over all I like the tones the patches the way you can save your set list to a computer and the sound. When I do a big show with the artist I play for I just save the sounds of the songs we are doing and then I can download them to anyone of the two ME80's I am using.NO tweaking on stage because it's already set.If I adjust anything it's the tones on my guitars according to the venue we play.If you want the feel of a group of stomp boxes without the hassle of tweaking knobs and adjusting tones then get the Boss ME 80 you will thank yourself later.

@@Homestudiosimplifed You can go over all the basic functions provided by each separate part of every pedal which would make 80 parts which is a lot to ask. But the correct use of pedals and functions matters a lot in creating patches. Like if I want a full metal sound, which pedals should I use and stuff like that. I hope that you can explain each and every function on the me-80 thoroughly cause I’ve not seen a video like that on UA-cam. It would really help a lot of people that are just starting to use the pedals without any past experiences. Hope I explained it enough.

I use my ME-80 and VAmp Pro for a lot of session work, but mostly use the ME-80 for live venues. It's built like a tank and I love the fact that I can use batteries to power it when there's no AC handy. The presets it comes with are good, but you can download a lot of great patches using the software it comes with or create your own like I do. Well worth the money I spent.

I am 5:18 into your video, and I just want to ask.. does this pedal have any great loooong sustain settings that are really good for sweep picking and speed picking? I'm asking because I have my eyes on this processor right now, and I'm doing homework.. maybe my question will be answered at some point in the rest of your video, but I'm really tired and don't know if I can make it through the entire thing, but I'm damn sure bout to try!!

Can I plug it to FX loop or only straight to guitar input? I'm wondering if it will work good with my old Marshall valvestate 8080. I think about buying this unit just to play around with it and check out what effects I like and kind off create my own style and tone. I don't have any effects and this solution will be much cheaper than creating whole pedalboard, at least for the beggining of my journey with guitar effects. Do you think that it is a good idea to give it a try?

Just started playing around with the guitar almost 2 weeks ago at age 43. Had never owned an electric but quite a few acoustics that I could never seem to practice consistently on. Got guitar and amp from pawnshop and guitar has a Floyd rose and is difficult to keep tuned. Bought a new Michael Kelly Patriot Decree last Friday and found a used Boss ME 80 COSM today and it opens so many more doors as a beginning guitarist. I am fascinated with it🤷🏻‍♂️😆

Great review mate and great overall explanations. I bought the ME-80 as a space saving alterative to 12-15 pedals that I own and I don't regret it. You just need to give it some time to get the hang of it. User TIPP: don't use the PRE AMP if you are plugging into a tube amp... it will sound like crap. Just go in without any simulation and adjust to taste.

@@s.gerardot.7342 The Fender BD sounds great as it is. But you can use the Boss as individual "pedals". Just set the amp clean-ish and then boost the signal with the Comp+Overdrive. Add delay to taste. As a Tipp, try to keep the "pedals" at the same level at start. I.e: keep all at about 50 and then make fine adjustments to the each individual. Your milage may vary though. The ME-80 is a very interesting piece of kit, you just have to be pacient and find your particular sound. Good luck.

Being a noob, this sounds interesting. I have a small amp with modeling amp capability (yamaha) and was thinking about adding a multi effect. Would you rather buy this or a smaller and more modern pedalboard like mooer ge200 or ampero hotone? Having already the amp modeling I thought it would be useless to have two devices doing the same stuff, and perhaps the boss has better effects. Could you share some wisdom? 😁 Keep up the great job!

      Great question man!
The BOSS pedal will give you the best results possible really and from a well established company. The fact is, the amp simulation can be turned off on the BOSS as well so that you could still use it solely as a pedalboard without needing to “double up” on sims.

I love My ME-80...so do my harmonicas. My harmonicas miss my DOD Tec-8 (another great multiple effect pedal) but soon had to except the hardware change. Me and my band are bound by blood! It is easier than a bunch of small pedals but the ME-80 can reduce having to move a bunch of peds. If you play out, most of the chicks are drunk enough that even if sober they couldn't tell a ped from a calculator (girls are pretty good with phones so don't try telling her it is one of those)!

In my view, you cannot use ME-80 without using its speaker emulation. The sound is too fake and lacks grit. The worst part is, you cannot switch the speak simulation off. Hence, with a tube amp, you can only this in FX loop section.

Hi, thank you for this very helpful video. I just bought an me 80 new a month ago and i normally play with a lot of distortion gain (similar to the 80s metal preset) but whenever i throw in distortion or overdrive to get that metal sound i get a very loud buzzing whenever the guitar is idle. i've tried different guitars and different amps and even using the studio to go right into my DAW but I can't shake this buzz. is this just a by-product of the pedalboard's high gain functions? I’ve had ME50 for years and some nice delays and mods but it’s hard to dial in good distortion without the digital sound betrayals, sounds like the ME80 can suffer same issues BUT has lots more functionality and options for doubling up on chorus and flanger which was impossible on ME50.
