More pedal videos, PLEASE!!!! Also, please explain what order they need to be in on the board. This is truly a subject that I find mind-boggling. 😵‍💫 🥴

    • @robguitarwizard
      @robguitarwizard 2 роки тому

Hey mate! There are videos that explain this but let me give you some tips.
First it comes to personal preference for the sound you want. But there is a general rule...
put the gains, overdrives etc first - then the modulation fx such as chorus, phaser, flanger, octave - then delay - reverb last (if you have it).
If course you can experiment with different orders.
The most basic pedal set up - when you start out and each pedal takes about 6-12 months to save up for. ..
Overdrive (or Distortion / or a hybrid that does both) --- a Chorus Pedal ( or again a pedal that has several Modulation fx) -- then a delay.
I've always been a fan of the Boss digital delays.
Back in the day people mostly bought Boss or Ibanez pedals - or both!
Now there are so many brands and some of the budget brands are putting out good quality pedals.
The reality is that - esp in the case of overdrives and distortions - they are quite simple circuits and inexpensive components used. That's another story.

@@robguitarwizard Thanks a lot, Rob! I have a few pedals and yes, some can cost a pretty penny. The few that I have are "budget" pedals, but haven't actually set my board up yet. I'll keep your info in mind when I do. 👍 🤘

Good to hear you built your own boost pedal.
I built an overdrive from a kit and retro-fitted it into the case of an old Ibanez Overdrive tgat was given to me in the mid 80s. It was a distortion effect (like a Big Muff I later discovered)
Years ago I actually ripped the guts out of that Ibanez Overdrive. Recently I discovered that it would have been worth several hundred or close to a thousand dollars - if only I'd kept it in tact!
Anyways. .. it lives on - on my pedal board - with a $30 overdrive kit inside..
Then I tried building a boost circuit. VERY simple circuit!
I made a 'prototype' effect - using strip board and figuring out from a schematic. It actually worked and when I hooked it up on my pedal board before the Overdrive MAN it kicked out major ass!
However, when it went and wired it all up as a pedal with a footswith etc.... it didn't work. Old Murphy playing his tricks on me!
      Back to the drawing board!

Terrific run-through of all these gain effect types! Nice to hear a few different overdrives since I've mainly heard the TS-9 (and clones) a lot. Those Petross 68 and 87 ones really do sound unique, and it was cool to hear the differences back-to-back. And glad you demonstrated how the clear boost behaves when it drives another gain pedal ... good trick to know about!

Back in my beginning days you had to have a teacher face to face or figure it out yourself. I spent many many years doing the latter.
I find these videos very useful even though I may know a lot of the stuff - instinctively; to have it explained so well is refreshing.

Ayla so glad to see you back .. I hope you were busy & happy perhaps on a Holiday or in the Studio with the Guys .. But Yes a good lesson on gain & the difference .. I keep reading about Gain structure etc .. Since I did not buy my 1st pedals of any kind until My 60th Birthday & have been collecting since .. But way back in my 20's I was given for free an unwanted 15 watt Selmer Transistor amp which sounded pretty awful but a friend rescued the only still working 12 inch speaker from a 4 by 12 Marshall that was in a Skip ( refuse builders thing I also got a Racing bike with a broken / cracked frame ) & when the 12 inch speaker was used to replace the cheap one in the amp it would only rest half In & out of the frame then we experimented incrementally using a razor blade & a small knitting needle until we achieved a lovely warm overdrive sound . Just as Dave Davie the brother of Ray Davies of the Kinks had done to get the Sound for " You Really got me " you can google this But it was folklore in the UK . I had that as my practice amp for many years . I had a 100watt Carlsboro Combo for live Which I used to play on almost full & use my Ibanez twin Humbucker as control . Incidentally another chum who was a Blacksmith welded the Bike for £1 & so I had a gr8 road bike for almost free lol . My main guitar hero was Rory Gallagher & he seemed to do everything with just the volume control & tone .. So it is only last 4 or 5 years I have been trying to understand pedals I have 3 Multi fx from cheap to quite expensive & a bunch of Tc electronics including the Mocambo which is modeled after SRV's tone at the famous El Mocambo gig . Anyway enough from me Big love to you & yours stay safe & Ps I am loving the Natural look .. You know it's a sad but true thing that as you get past 40 or so the compliments start getting different .. as in you look good " for your age " lol & by my age well compliments are only that I scrub up well " when I make the effort " & that's from my wife .. So take my advice & practice saying "thankyou " when you get a compliment ( even if you are wondering what they are after lol ) .. I was told once by a fabulous musician that no matter how badly I thought I had played or how scruffy I felt .. That it was a kind of unfair thing to do to a ' Fan ' who would not know an Eb maj 7with an added 13th from a G major & that to accept all compliments as diplomatically as possible .. without lying . He said just say " Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the gig " no need to make them feel stupid for not noticing all your mistakes & I have tried to do that ever since . Anyway Glad your back bye

You are simply one groovy chick who would have easily fit in with any generation from the 60's to today. I am older and have a Fender strat American Standard. It's a nice guitar but I don't play it that much. I have this little cheesy amp that has a gain knob which adds some distortion but it is hard to get a decent effect. I think I need to upgrade my amp and start experimenting with pedals.

    No boss overdrives?
I guess they compare with the ts but not quite the same.
Many cite the Ibanez TS as THE greatest overdrive but it never did it for me.
I had one for a while and sold it.
Have had so many od and distribution pedals in my time.
At present I am using an OD circuit which I built myself from a kit; and a Joyo classic od which (surprisingly) is supposed to be a TS-'clone'.
I have them both on half way settings and stack them together.
Also I am an 'electronic' guitarist! I don't use an amp. I use modelling fx and incorporate my guitar sounds with a lot of other tech, such as loopers, synths, sequencers and drum machines.
I got a Joyo AMERICAN Sound pedal which claims to emulate a Fender amp.
Now, I'm not an amp nerd - but it does sound good.
Compressor -always on - first in the chain.
    Sorry for the rave on.
    Keep rockin every one!

I can hear the difference but Ayla, can you explain the actual difference between gain, distortion and overdrive? Is it just different levels of distortion? Thx

    • @MusoraMedia
      @MusoraMedia  3 роки тому +2

The most important thing is that you can hear the difference! In this video, “saturated” refers to how much your signal is driven, and thus how much gain and dirt is added to your signal. So overdrive is typically less saturated than distortion and fuzz! However, the difference between these effects is actually determined more so by HOW the gain effect is achieved (as detailed in the video) as opposed to how only how much gain. That can sometimes depend more on the individual pedal.

I prefer a pushed amp tone with mids so I use an boss sd-1 in front of a crunchy amp (Orange) with the eq set for clarity. For the boss I set the tone at 12 o’clock with the drive and level set at 11 o’clock but I do play around till I find what I’m looking for ( heavy rock tone that’s not scooped).
As an extra I also own a big muff nano but I’m still experimenting with it and it’s not really my tone mainly just for some songs I like to play.
