Listening to these 2 evaluating the qb position hurts my head
Me too. I mean. "He's inaccurate...and you can't fix that -- but let's not panic!" Hate to break it to you guys, but that's headline panic material you guys just threw out there. Um. These guys essentially hit the fire alarm and then said, "There's nothing to see here." Rather than trying to over explain something that you already set on fire, how about just not setting it on fire? Lie to us a little bit, eh? None of us are there, we'll take your word for it.
Just say: "he's learning and that's all we can ask. And, dayum, he's got a cannon for an arm!" Easy peasy.
Also just read McCarty was cutting through the wind and looked amazing. So.....
So don't listen. Start your own channel and show us how it's done
@@stuartanderson6785 Total mischaracterization but you seem to do that a lot in this comment section
lmao
The dude just got his first beer 5 months ago. I have t-shirts older than him. Give him time jeez!
You didn't listen, we have said this endlessly
D a r n o l d come back player of the yr.
Throwing outside the hashes especially to the left side has been a problem for McCarthy completing around 50% of those passes. Accuracy when changing mechanics often drops until the mechanics become rote.
rote
JJ needs to sit for an entire year just like Mahomes and have a genius familiarity with the playbook, so it's second nature.
I think Sam is way more talented than some folks think, way better than Geno and Baker, but he has never been put in such a good position to succeed. Consider 2022 when Baker started for the Panthers and went 1-6, before Sam inherited them later, under an interim coach, and after CMC was traded, and finished the season 4-2 almost getting them into the playoffs.
Everything we can say about the Vikes being a great situation for JJ, we can also say for Sam. His rushing and pocket presence is vastly superior to Cousins. When all is said and done Darnold could be as good or better than Kirk...
people really need to stop the comparison with Baker as evidence Darnold can do the same thing. Mayfield had a much better body of work in Cleveland and was still playing for Matt Rhule at that time
@@PurpleInsider Playing for Matt Rhule, sure, but Baker also had CMC, and Darnold finished that season after CMC was traded, and under an interim HC, and with the O Line and D falling apart.
In the previous season, Darnold also started under Matt Rhule and came out of the gate firing 3-0.
Darnold faded through a stretch of tough games losing 42-36 on the road at the Cowboys - who destroyed the 13-4 Vikes at USBank the following season.
Followed by a last minute loss to the emerging Eagles, then Darnold nearly stole the game off the full strength Vikes after a 98 yard TD drive and 2 pt conversion. I think Darnold lost CMC to injury about this time too.
So, I agree it is marginal to compare Baker and Darnold straight up - but I disagree and think it is valid to compare what they did in similar circumstances with the same roster in the same organisation.
Tbh - I don't believe that you, or most Vikes fans have ever gone back and specifically watched Darnold in his starts for the Panthers or the 49ers, and are just trotting out previously held convictions from his days at the Jets.
Anyone who has watched Darnold in 2022 or 2023 would likely see him being much more careful with the football, making his fair share of great throws, and someone not that far removed from Kirk.
Sam sucked in college. He sucked when he entered the league. He sucks now. He will suck forever in perpetuity.
Nah I'm a niners fan darnold sucks man Trey was showing him up so much that they didn't want a controversy at qb when brock came back they traded trey instead of letting him play in the last pre season the only thing good about Sam is his mechanics he freaks out as soon as the first read is gone
I 110 percent agree
You do realize this is the second practice in minicamp right?
Wow I had no idea thank you so much! You are very smart
They're doing their job...I respect the honesty
tried to tell everyone JJ is a career backup. Sammy has never had the chance to start with the kind of weapons he has now. The Jets and Panthers had empty cupboards of offense. And he never got a chance to start in San Fran.
Now he has a good o-line, and a crazy plethora of elite weapons. Jetta, Addison, Aaron Jones and the eventual return of Hock. He will finally get a chance to reach his potential
When is the last evidence of a nfl qb bust on his 4th team resurrecting his career? Sorry but both our qbs are epic busts.
@@WheresWaldo05 just Geno, and possibly Baker. One sat for a couple of years before getting the chance to start again in Seattle, and the other never sat for that long but was bouncing in and out of a starters role until he found a system and environment that suits him
When he gets comfortable he is very accurate. He was near 70% completion rate, when he played at Michigan. Very few interceptions.
In college jj was one of the most accurate passers. The guy had like a 76% completion percentage.
That wasn’t his completion percentage and college isn’t the same game
So he only played 1 year in college? If there’s any “one of the most” is JJ is one the most successful QBs with the fewest pass attempts in college. When you’re only asked to attempt choice passes, it’s easy to be accurate. Completing 7 of 10 passes in 48 mins in a game doesn’t say accurate to me. Did Michigan only have 10 possessions in the game? Nah 7-10 says only have him attempt passes HE can make.
A 72.3 completion percentage in 2023 is still close to what he said. Also football is still football even if it’s played at a different level. People usually keep a similar skill set when moving from college to NFL.
"in college" vs "in the pros." jj just needs to adjust to the speed and timing
@@Hengel_Andrews"JJ Never throws the ball" completed 240 passes last year. "Gunslinging Drake Maye" completed 269 passes. Is that dramatically different?
Incoming European snark! How very American to assume that accuracy throwing a football is a God granted natural ability inherent to some. Weird that everyone who is able to be consistently accurate when throwing a football at the NFL level was born in the US, maybe time on task matters. Gotta tell Dane to have that growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset!
any developments with the kicking "battle" how does the rookie kicker look?
Not yet, we havent gotten a good look at the kickers
he is going to be allright, give him time to develop
It's not McCarthy has only thrown 100 passes in his life. He's been a QB since he was in junior high. Between games and practices, he's thrown thousands of passes. Using the golf analogy, I'd say he's like a college golfer who turned pro and the first thing his new coach did was change his swing. Until the new swing is internalized, he's going to shank one now and then.
I think we just have to "ignore" him for probably a year and "trust the process". When he starts, it will be when O'Connell thinks the mechanics and the playbook are fully absorbed so they are second nature. Maybe end of this season, but my bet is next year.
do you know how many reps most QBs have compared to him? In some cases literally double the passes thrown in college
@@PurpleInsider I'm not disputing that. However, he's also not Trey Lance or Anthony Richardson who had ~350 attempts their entire college careers. JJ's attempts are similar to a 2-year college starter getting drafted 20+ years ago (Aikman, Rodgers). And that's why he's probably sitting for the entire season.
I’m glad they have arm talent on the roster. Kirk was accurate but not a playmaker when plays went off schedule - I like our chances with intuitive athletes
Powell is the WR 3- Don't overthink it
He’s like a decent #4
This is practice and this is McCarthy's first few days of practice with the team. Let's wait until McCarthy works on his craft the next 7 weeks and comes back for Training camp to both declare him a bust and Sam Darnold a superstar locked in starter.
Thanks, I'll do another podcast 5 years from now when we have the answers
We git remember jj going against a brian Flores defense it's diff going be a rough start but it will hopefully over time be for the better
Don't forget 27% of his deep throw were graded uncatchable by PFF
Tonyan is a decent option, and maybe getting back to his best after some injuries, but converting Harry also sounds like a great idea. It's not that strange to see folks change position - ONeill used to be a TE...
A bunch of quarterbacks in todays gave have improved their accuracy over their pro career what are you guys talking about
The best thing about Sam Darnold is he can be resigned for another year or two if he’s effective. This would be beneficial for both parties involved allowing J.J. to sit and learn for a year or two possibly three years also allowing Darnold to showcase that he’s not a one year wonder allowing him a big payday and resurrecting his career.
True but his salary will triple or double if he does well this year.
@@newt6639 plus he will have multiple teams vying for his services and bidding on him
How is Andre Carter II looking so far?
without much contact it's hard to tell but he's going to get opportunities
Curious if Brock Purdy looked as bad at any point in training camp with Darnold last year
There was chatter coming out of the 49ers that Darnold was putting pressure on Purdy, and Darnold made them give up on Trey Lance and the three 1st rounders they had invested in him.
I recommend watching the 49ers vs Ravens game and comparing them yourself. I think Darnold played significantly better in that game, the only one that they both played in.
Any Rookie should make a 7-year vet look good. People are starting to talk about Donalds next contract. That would be a Viking thing to do. Jump back into a cousin's situation after we drafted our guy. LMAO
I'm a Falcon fan and each day I say what the falcons did make more and more sense each day. Because you have a highly good QB (Kirk Cousins) for the now and a 1st rounder QB (Penix Jr) sitting for 1 to 2 years. Look at all the 1st round QBs this year who have a chance at being at starter. All of them are struggling but Penix Jr is turning heads in OTAs because he doesn't have to worry about the pressure the rookie QB will have.
McCarthy doesn't have any pressure to start this season. That will be Darnold, who just turned 27 and isn't coming off an Achilles. Good luck with Cousins. He will need a lot of protection, and doesn't have Jettas to bail him out anymore.
If the Falcons wanted to light a big pile of $$$ on fire for a QB, why did they pass on signing Lamar Jackson last year for a slightly bigger pile of $$$? Get a former MVP top 5 QB in his prime 9 years younger than Cousins. Use this years draft pick on a defensive player, although with LJ last year ATL would have probably won 3-4 more games than they did (including the Vikings game prob) and this years 1st round pick would have been lower.
@@robe2504 Kirk Cousins is listening limited but he's doing full participation practices. Also, Kirk has London, Pitts, Robinson, and Algeria, etc. He will be okay. Yes Donald is the original starter but y'all are not tied to him so he can get cut at the drop of a dime and we all know he's not that good.
@@chriserickson7559 Easy, because Lamar Jackson was never leaving the Ravens. Whatever contract the falcons would have made the Ravens have the chance to match it. So no team was going to do the negotiation for the Ravens. Yes they paid Kirk Cousins the going rate for a above average QB now.
@@Slimdulla87 if I was the GM of ATL, I would have at least made LJ an offer. It only takes 1 day. They didn’t do that. Worst case is he says no and stays with the Ravens, making an offer costs nothing. A bunch of teams this year picked up the phone to call the Vikings about Jefferson, knowing the odds were low, but they made the call anyway, doesn’t cost them a thing.
Did the Vikings cut Jaren Hall? Are they not allowing him any reps? I would really like to hear how is HE looking this year; how does he and McCarthy compare?
he's not taking reps when they do team stuff
Jefferson and Addison made Kirk's stats better but his accuracy was still not good enough.
How is Dallas Turner looking Matt?
Thanks
Fast. Not much contact, so I cant say much else
So Darnold is no longer the invisible man?
Hey guys.... You mentioned JJ a lot....What about Sam? You can't have a title like that and only mention one-half of the equation, you know?
I love the way yall just hated on jj. Watch jj tear it up now. And warch the both of yous start capitulatiing
So many people thought JJ was going to be the next coming of Jesus in Minneosta but he didnt do anything at the collegiate level. Yes, he was on a national championship winning team, which he helped lead them to that but his part was minimized as much Harbaugh could minimize it. It's early but i dont see this kid having success in the league.
Josh Allen did not look accurate his first 2 years in the NFL. They could have given up on him. He figured it out in his 3rd year and now he is elite. Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his first year and he turned out to be an above average quarterback. Tom Brady threw 18 tds and 12 ints his first full season. He threw 28 TDs his 2nd year. It could take JJ a year or two to adjust to the NFL. Darnold could also take a leap this year.
I cannot believe the names u just compared JJ to 😂😂. He’s a career backup, sorry
Peyton Manning was not and never an above average QB. He is top 5 all time. Lol.
Manning threw 28 ints his first season. Hardly always top 5. When I say "above average" that is called an understatement.
@@blessembreaksWhen Manning threw 28 ints his first season, people would have said he was a backup. No one knows how good JMac will be at this point. It's sill to expect him to look like a polished starter during his first OTAs
So much talk about WR3. My thoughts are.....so what? Jefferson was out half the season, KJ Osborn didn't step up in his absence, and the passing game was fine. It was the defense and the running game that ultimately took this team out of contention. Flores did the best he could, but teams started figuring some things out and the defensive personnel wasn't good enough. I think that's getting better, and the Vikings have made a significant upgrade at RB. Brandel > Risner as a run blocker...probably. Of all the concerns with this current team, passing offense ranks dead last. Powell or Nailor or who ever steps up at WR3 will be fine. TE weapons, Jones is good out of the backfield, and one of if not the best 1-2 WR combo in the league.
Jj is gonna be the next Desmond Ridder
Regarding the QB's? It is mini-camp. I don't think anyone takes what they see in mini camp as indicators of what will happen in the future.
A good coach will dumb down the offense for him as he comes along rather than trying to force it, mix in plays n routes he’s comfortable with from college.
To me JJ is Daniel Jones 2.0, I’m not so sure this kid works out
no rush with JJ. see how packers did with Jordan loves
This isn't a football specific thing. New people tend to try too hard to do things "properly" and overcorrect. This is an artifact of our training processes and what's seen as a normal way to correct someone's mistakes.
If he'd done the opposite (tried to relax and winged it, but made a mistake) he'd have received far more criticism for not listening to his coaches.
Guy on the right has skills. Both are talented. But homie with the glasses has game.
Harry can't make it as a WR, that is why he is going to TE. Apparently they talked to him about it during the offseason because he added 10 pounds in preparation.
Agree to disagree. Just got done reading that his throws were crisp, his ball cut through the wind, and he looked good. In fact most writers have said this... Not sure why your takes are so radically different than the rest of the media. I'd be curious how you perceived the great throws he's made?
You didnt even see practice but you disagree? Great stuff. Hilarious
@@PurpleInsider you sound awfully salty about a disagreement and a question. Gonna have a hard time in this business if you can't handle a difference of opinion and a question. Even seeing the comment you made above, "so don't listen. Start your own channel and show us how it's done." seriously you're going to need thicker skin...my comment was not rude or disrespectful and ended with a question. You responding with hurt and defensive sarcasm says more about you and your character than your takes and channel. How about don't start a youtube channel if you can't handle the smallest disagreement or question. PS- JJ was incredibly accurate last year over 72%. Touch might be a challenge, but his accuracy is not in doubt.
Jj is doing everything I knew he would do. Kurt Warner warned people. He throws everything. to hard and lacks touch and arc passes that Jefferson can go up and attack the ball in the air.
The kid needs polish…he’ll sit this season give him some time good grief!!!
Sensationalist headline.
Oh get over it
We literally talked about the exact topic of the headline
@@PurpleInsider I think he was just joking?
@@PurpleInsider you spent the last month and a half saying how McCarthy will need time and the second he doesn’t look like a polished product on June 5th the alarm bells are going off. It diminishes your credibility which is a shame
@@zleanI agree.
Told you to take Bo.
Accuracy is a talent, it takes forever the teach accuracy. You're screwed. Case in point CJ Stroud, he's got it. Or Trey Lance, he ain't got it. You could have taken Bo Nix, he has it.
Is he looking better then mond
Yes easily
Sam Darnold is the reincarnation of Jake Plummer with Quicy Carter’s footwork
If JJ cannot even be on par as a rookie with NFL bust Darnold, then he most def meet my expectations of being an over hyped bust himself.

I can't take anyone serious who wears a Taylor Swift t-shirt. Sorry.

really sharp commentary here, great work
😂
Judging a rookie quarterback diring his first OTAs and relearning how to throw with the best technique against NFL talent is laughable. It assumes great coaching cannot help a player improve. We don't know at this point how good JMac will be. Josh Allen looked bad his first 2 seasons. Then look what happened
Is Darnold an improvement on Cousins?
bruh
Why not. I have high hopes for Darnold.
OMG. No. He's not a top 10 QB in the NFL.
@@TristanandIsolt neither is cousins. He's maybe top 12

I absolutely believe you can change your touch that you have. This guest has no idea how to evaluate qb play tbh.

If Cousins was the Vikes QB this season - how many wins would you expect???
5 or 6
@@Malkil75 So the same for the Falcons then?
I'd expect 10-11 wins. Defense improved, offense the same, and hopefully less crucial injuries. Without him, assuming Darnold is competent, 7-9 seems more realistic.
