Look at the 2012 Vikings roster besides Adrian Peterson, then you’ll appreciate just how great he had to be in his prime to get that into the playoffs.
Defensively the Vikings still had Jared Allen, Antoine Winfield, Chad Greenway, Everson Griffen and a rookie Harrison Smith but offensively your point stands. Percy Harvin was on the roster but he was done almost halfway through the year.
They got in because the Packers lost on purpose to keep Chicago out of the playoffs as they were way better than the Vikings hence why the Packers annihilated them WC week
Right! I guess you could argue their special teams was really good considering Walsh was the best kicker in the league as a rookie, and they had 2 of the best returners in Harvin and Sherels. But besides them AD carried this team on his back!

Honestly, these last few years up to 2015 honestly were the last years that felt like football. The hits, less penalties and rules. Everything in this game is a night and day difference compared to today's game
Well, our Bears should have taken care of our own business and beat the Vikings up there when we had the chance. Then we wouldn't have needed the Packers help. It also didn't help that the Bears got swept by the Packers in 2012. That's the real reason why Lovie Smith got fired even after going 10-6. The Bears started at 7-1 in 2012. Lovie's first few years with the Bears he did beat Green Bay. But after the Bears got Jay Cutler, the Bears under Lovie and Jay were like 1-10 or 12 against the Packers.
Packers fan, even though we lost this game I still remember watching it as a 10 year old. My first season watching football and to this day I haven’t seen any RB as good as 2012 Adrian Peterson. Pretty sure we beat the Vikings a week later in the playoffs before the Kaepernick game.
Packers lost on purpose to keep chicago out of the playoffs. If Packers would have won they'd have played Chicago in the WC and the 2012 Bears were way better than the Vikings. Thats why GB annihilated Minnesota in the playoffs. Also Henry last year was as good at 2012 AP only had less receptions and 5 more Touchdowns.
Looking back now, I wished he had scored on that last run or Walsh missed that kick to go to OT for the chance for AP to break the record. I think most Viking fans would have wished AP had broken the record instead of their result in the playoffs that year.
Frazier and the coaching staff were complete morons for not running Webb more that playoff game lol. It was working very well and they just stopped to have him be a pocket passer and the very next week Kaepernick runs for 180 on Green Bay.
And 2 Think Peterson Still Plays Now. That Nearly Almost 300yd Game Against Chargers In 2007,2008 Was Something.....I Believe He Barely Had 50+yds At Half
I was at this game as a 14 year old. The biggest thing I remember was the noise. The fans knew we needed to win that game and it seemed like everyone in purple was doing whatever they could to make as much noise as possible when the pack had the ball. Making a megaphone with the game program, clapping with big mittens, finger whistles, it was really everyone. I had no voice for a few days but it was worth it…
AP does not get enough credit now days to how good he really was. The man was and still is a beast. I think when he got in trouble for correcting his child with a belt and it coming to light in the media is was hurt AP.
Such a classic game. Not a fan of either team but watching such a close game with so many implications occurring throughout was truly memorable. I also think that this is one of the more noteworthy games in defense of Joe Buck's commentary style. His simplicity in calling AP's efforts to break the record in whilst simultaneously needing a win at all costs to make the playoffs was well suited, I think.
Leslie Frazier clearly didn’t want AP to break his record- AP was getting chunk yards against that Packers run defense- completely criminal-he had Ponder throwing the damn ball on more than enough occasions with 1st and 10 instead of handing the ball off to AP-I bet AP will never love it down
I felt like if Minnesota REALLY wanted to give Peterson the record, they could've. However, I understand they were more conservative with him down in the later stages of game to try to insure a playoff berth.
Peterson almost literally carried Ponder into the playoffs just so he could be "inactive" going into Green Bay the next week. Webb was thrown to the wolves while Ponder kept up on that sore shoulder with some icy hot...
@@abreathoffreshsports Agreed. Green Bay game planned for AP as if it were Normandy & STILL steamrolled em. Him and the front five could've taken Omaha Beach at will
John Madden used to call AP a “VIOLENT RUNNER” because the numbers on the front of his jersey would have the markings of the defender’s helmets on them from trying to tackle him.
Even now, 11 years later, it still bugs me they didn't just let him run one or two more times to get the record, then win the game in OT. He was that close. I remember his record-breaking season that year had the whole country just like invested into him. It was great. We all wanted him to break that record. I'm a Jets fan and I was rooting for it. Still pisses me off they didn't let him run one or two more times lol
I’ve always felt that the 2012 Vikings were one of those teams that only managed to get into the playoffs due to other much better teams squandering their seasons. You had the defending Super Bowl champion Giants, who suffered from a common SB hangover. The Saints had the Bountygate scandal catch up to them, and I think Sean Payton’s suspension affected them psychologically. The Bears were on a roll at the beginning of the year, but then suffered from a late season slump, and the Vikings were able to take that final playoff spot due to having a better division record than Chicago.
I wouldn't say any of those teams were better than the Vikings in 2012. Defensively, Minnesota stepped up from their abysmal 2011 season. Especially at the end of the year when they went on a 4 game win streak. They got hot at the right time, while the Bears and Giants struggled down the stretch. They also beat the eventual nfc champion 49ers earlier in the year too. So, no the Vikings weren't great that year, but you gotta give them some credit.
This game kept the Bears out of the playoffs and got Lovie Smith fired, even though he went 10-6 that year. They would’ve played Green Bay in Lambeau the following week had the Packers won.
incredible to see how much better the CHRISTIAN PONDER led 2012 Vikings were compared to the current version with a supposedly top tier QB in Cousins who is the opposite of clutch and will never win a super bowl (hell, maybe a play off game). and i have no misconceptions about how average Ponder was. I remember him throwing an interception when trying to throw one away.
