Jets fans, sort of pulling for a guy who didn't pan out for them, tells you something about Sam Darnold. He's a good guy, and his talent is undeniable. He's also mentioned the reason why he hasn't played up to his draft pick......consistency. Can better coaching and players around him turn Sam into a top half of the league starter? I have my doubts, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility either.

Kirk had the same situation in 2017 as Darnold had during his Jets years (and the Panthers were better). Both guys had Jamison Crowder as their WR1, the other weapons were mediocre at best, bad running backs, bottom 7 olines by PFF, and middling coaching. Kirk put up 4100 yards and 27/14 TD:INT ratio, which is way better than Darnold has ever looked

I suspect KOC blamed a lot of their running game's woes on Mattison, but I think Risner got some blame here as well. His run blocking was "as advertised", which is poor. I also thought while Ingram's pass pro improved some last season, it may have come at the expense of his run blocking which I think he graded above average in 22'. Bringing Risner back is smart. When you throw everything into the pot (pass + run blocking), what you have is an almost average NFL OG, and when it comes to the Vikings IOL average isn't terrible.

Favre qas doing superhuman type stuff playing with emotions but it led to int's but led to him being a HOF and winning games that would be impossible for any other QB. Rodgers took out playing with emotion and used IQ and took out the Int's but that led to sacks, forcing it to one dude too much not throwing enough over the middle of the field, not taking the check down etc. Love takes out the playing with emotion, took away the int's and sacks in the second half, spreads the ball around, runs the offense as it's supposed to be played unlike with Rodgers, and learns from his mistakes unlike Rodgers who continued to make the same mistakes due to ego and not being coachable. Love had become the best QB in the NFL in the second half of the year. The issue Love had is in the end of games when he had to make a super hero throw he would chuck up 50/50 balls to Watson and they failed 90% of the time because Watson didn't adjust and the last play of the year qas unnecessary. This lead to 5 game losing int's. STOP CHUCKING IT TO Batson in game winning situations. Also, he needs to run more and become a better at the QB sneaks.

I just don't see another qb off the scrap heap is going to turn it around. Will he be ok?... i think so but the Vikes will struggle on offense if he is in there all 17 games. The question is, how much losing will they accept this season in relation to JJ's growth? He will catch on quickly but doubt he will be polished. I hope signing Risner doesn't mean that Brandel is looking shaky and it's for depth.

This is the only reasonable take I’ve read so far. Lots of hopium and purple kool aid being consumed projecting Darnold as anything more than the journeyman backup that he is. Tough schedule with a fringe NFL QB leading the offense will result in a 6-7 win season. Hopeful that McCarthy takes the job sooner instead of later. Watching the team struggle to 6 or 7 wins will be a lot more enjoyable if it happens while a rookie takes their lumps and we get to see some growth and hope for 2025. A 6 or 7 win season with Darnold and then a complete unknown heading into 2025 will be pretty demoralizing as a fan.

I do know Vikings fans tend to overreact and post delusional takes. I mean of course we support him, we want the Vikings to win, but with Cousins, who is eons above Darnold and they barely scratched .500 the years Cousins was here. So unless Darnold pulls a Case Keenum, then the Vikings will be in last place in the North.

I remember watching Tommy Kramer play in his rookie year, Fran Tarkenton broke his leg and Bob Lee took over for most of the year but Kramer came in after Bob Lee struggled in one game and he looked good so they started him the next week against Oakland. Kramer struggled badly during the game and didn't see the field again in his rookie year. If anyone remembers Daunte Culpepper was pathetic when he played during the preseason of his rookie year, and I was in disbelief when he was named the starter in his second season because he didn't look like he would be ready to start, but what a difference a year made he was playing at a high level as soon as his second season started. Sitting a year is not a bad thing and often it is the best thing for a rookie QB.

My theory is that he was simply asking too much and, even though the Vikings wanted to bring him back, they just couldn't justify paying what he was asking. Risner apparently realized this, came down in his ask and now he's a Viking again. Could have avoided all this nonsense a long time ago. My theory isn't exactly ground breaking, but it does highlight the fact that a lot of players really over-value themselves. I fear Jefferson may be doing this as well. He's NOT a QB and I fear he feels like he should be paid like one. Just a guess, of course, but this team really wants him back so I have a hard time thinking this lack of a signing falls primarily on the Vikings; I really don't think the Wilf's are going cheap on us.

Risner is meh, OK pass blocker, poor run blocker. Should be a good backup.

The offense looked better once they added Risner

@@puppethoundPartially because Cousins is a statue. Interior pressure was an obstacle that he consistently failed to overcome. Risner provided some much needed defense against quick interior pressure. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the same impact in the run game. If Brandel is able to be an average pass blocker and an average run blocker, it will be an improvement overall.

JJ wants to play for a contender. Vikings know that. And they know no extention is likely to be signed. Force him to stay is very risky and seldomly rewarded. In other words, Vikings need a new WR1. Malik Nabers would have that.

1st pick was Nabers (11), and McCarthy with pick 2 (23). Obviously Nabers required a trade up. But who else wanted McCarthy? Not Denver. All smoke. Only team that saw McCarthy as a round 1 QB was Vikings. In other words, this might be true.
