  • Three main fishing reel types are the spinning reel (open-face), spin-caster reel (closed face), and bait-casting reel. All three reel types have their pros and cons, but for me, the spinning reel is the best all around reel for the money, durability, and casting distance.
    Hope this video helps in you reel selection.

    I've had the same $29 Zebco 33 Classic since new in about 1983 IIRC. Never a single issue whatsoever. Same with the Zebco 44 Triggerspin model. In a canoe, there's no better type than the spincaster for its enclosed body and rugged build. They've been kicked, stepped on (lightly), had stuff fall on them, been tossed forward, etc. They have always worked. The 33 Classic drops it exactly where I want it and will cast into the next county. They're not quiet, not sophisticated, not particularly fast, but they've outlived all my other reels with the exception of my vintage Mitchell 300. Getting ready to buy a new Zebco ZO3 to see what all the hoopla is about.

    I used a zebco 33 max reel with a 6ft ugly stick this fall on lake Erie using spoons to catch good size steelhead Trout, and landed over 20 fish averaging between 18 & 26 inches on that setup! 12lb Berkley triline fluorocarbon handles the big Trout. While other angler's were using very expensive setups and struggled catching fish, I was having my spoons slammed by steelheads often, and earned the respect of the other guys on the peer very quickly. Love the 33 max reels, yes, they bring in big ass fish.

    They each have their purpose. I'm a Zebco 33 user, have been my entire life. I love the versatility of the 33 spincast reel. I can throw all different sizes of baits with this one reel and with the speed of a bait caster. Keep it cleaned and oiled with new line and it will cast as far as I need it to. The spinning reel is slower because of the steps you have to take between casts but is good in certain situations. But for an all around reel like wjen hiking a ways to a good fishing spot, I take my Zebco 33, it works with most any rod. You have to clean out and oil the 33 often and that greatly extends the life. I still have my first 33 from 40 years ago still working. SECRET: Zebco will send me parts for free when I need them, I just email and ask!

      Yea I don't understand all the hate of spincast reels. I have always used one and so has my dad and grandfather and I don't feel like its ever cost me a fish. Honestly I think its an infirority thing with some of these guys who talk shit about spincast. Spincast puts bait casters to shame on small creeks and rivers and that's where I tend to do most of my fishing usualy for catfish 5 pounds or less but also blue gill, crappie, and river bass.

      Can you interchange a spinning reel with a closed-face reel on the same rod?

    • @cli_sensei
      @cli_sensei 7 років тому +5

      Grand Wonder - You can interchange top-mount spincast (most common) and baitcast reels on the same rod because the are both top-mount reels and the size and placement of the eyes on the rod. Spinning reels have much larger eyes on the pole and you should not put a top-mount spincast reel on a spinning rod, but you could put an undermount spincast on a spinning rod.

    Thanks for simple, straight forward explanation. Haven't fished much since I was a kid. A few days ago, I cast my old quantum bait caster into the wind and bird nested it. I think I'm gonna get a zebco 808 for brackish water fishing where I live in coastal MS for the simplicity. They're 30 bucks for a combo at walmart. If the reel doesn't become a family heirloom, I'm ok with it at that price.

    The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

    Nice informative video. You can control a spinning reel with your index finger. It is called feathering and works like putting your thumb on a baitcaster. Speaking of which, I set up one of my baitcasters as an "ultra light". 6-8 lb test line, light action rod. I have no problem casting a 1/16th oz spinner bait up to about 80 feet or further depending on conditions. With care your reels should last a lot longer than 2-3 years. I have some that I fish all the time and are over 30 years old. Bad news: cant get parts for them anymore, darnnit. Tight lines and keep uo the good videos.

    OK, I'm impressed just in the first 30 seconds. He knows what a closed face reel is. In the fifties thru to the seventies, the reel on the right was a closed face, the center was a spinning or fixed spool and the one on the left was called a level wind, a multiplier or less often, a casting or bait casting reel.

    I use all three but enjoy the zebco 33 the most. It's just not problematic, if you oil the parts They will last. Open face reels are great as well they allow for the great ease of viewing line manipulation. The Bait caster in my opinion is a greatest reel for saltwater fishing because it is designed for tension & allowing bigger fish to run while slowing the rate of the run effectively to tire a fish. It all depends on preference, they are all designed to assist in catching fish........👍

    I have a shakespear rod and reel I got when about 11 because we were staying In the high Sierra for a week and my dad said time for your first pole went to the local bait store picked what I wanted open face but has a lever to open the reel for casting nice feature. I am now 32 and been fishing every trout season sense and hasn't been giving me any problems every now and then I open it open clean it out and put some lubrication in. Mainly talking about the ball bearings and in the handle. This reel spins as smooth as when I got it 20 plus years ago. I find that open face reels easy to stop just spin the handle and it stops. Right it set up with 8 lb test braided. I usually fish for trout and bass. I keep usually anything I catch besides cat fish. Only other rod I have is a fly rod which I know not supposed to use on sti water but when trout and bass are not bitting deep only surface. Throwing a nice fly into the water and letting it float to the weeds. Is the easiest way to make sure you come with dinner.

    For me I have about 7 bait casters and they are great. They cast a little farther than spinning pending what you use. Yeah they aren't going to cast really really light stuff far, but overall they are a lot better than spinning reels in my personal opinion. This is a great video though to show the different purposes of each kind.

    Thank you so much for the straightforward and concise answers. But I gotta ask: what’s the deal with bass fishing that it would designate specific reels for I.e “bait casters for bass”
    Fishing is fishing, right? A bass can’t tell the difference between a spin cast and bait cast, can they? 🤔
    I think I’ll stick to the basic spin caster as they’re what I grew up with and are pretty much fool proof and inexpensive which fits my bill. Only irk I have with them is they don’t like throwing perch jigs. Too light. But basic pike baits like jerkbaits, spoons and swimbaits my little Zebco is perfect for on the river or small lakes.
    No I’m not professional and I don’t intend to ever be. I just want to learn and catch fish instead of throwing a string for 2 hours. 🎣

    I use the Zebco Bullet MG which sells for $169 in Canada. The Bullet can handle heavy or light baits, has a gear ratio more comparable with a baitcaster, casts ridiculously far, backlashes are non-existent, and it's built to last. It's unfortunate that, when using a spincast reel in a comparison, typically a cheaper reel is used. Great video though, you did an awesome job.

    I have a Garcia ABUmatic 170 spin-cast reel that my Mom used for more than 50 years, every chance she got, and it works like a champ. I have several ABUmatic reels (136. 140, 160, 170, and 290) from the sixties and seventies, and I don't see any reason to replace them. Distance has never been an issue, and the "SYNCHRO" drag is an engineering marvel. I have Garcia Mitchell 300, 308, 330, 408, and 409 spinning reels that are more than 40 years old, and in splendid working condition, even the automatic bail release on the 330s. The classic Garcia Ambassadeur bait-casting reels are very ruggedly built and would probably survive a thermonuclear war. These models are available on eBay. Some are offered at preposterous prices, but a fair price is whatever the biggest damn fool in sight will pay. Some are worn-out junk. If you can find a good one. though, the classic ABUmatics, Mitchells, and Ambassadeurs will give you years of service, and repair parts (if needed) are easily available.

    Spincast reels best for bass fishing. Owned one for 20 years with no issues what so ever. Never had a backlash either. By far the most accurate casting reel. Cant see why anglers have moved onto Baitcast reels that cant throw really light baits and get backlashes the whole time.. Better to spend more time fishing and less time sorting out backlash issues.

      You want some advice? if ur looking into finesse fishing get a cheap baitcaster first, just to get the feel. Its annoying to use at first but its ok for target pitching. Get a spinning reel if u dont like baitcasters, they dont birds nest, and they are super simple to use, good for all around fishing. But dont worry much about the reels, the rod does most of the work, keep that in mind.

    Everyone has their preferences...but to limit the effectiveness and/or longevity of the spincast reel is nonsense. Like someone said below, it gives you the best of both baitcast and spinning, without the cons of either. Not that there are many cons with spinning reels; but in regards to baitcast reels, spincast reels use the same rods as baitcast reels, so you get a similar feel and action in your hand from the rod and reel; yet you lose the threat of backlash. And if you rinse your rods and reels off after usage, and grease and oil them as you should, they last MANY years.

    I like bass fishing in the summer, but hey they don’t grow to be like 10 pounds in my area. Besides, baitcasters are too expensive and complicated to use.

    Hi, I just started fishing and before I watched any youtube video I got a rod with a spinning real. I live in PA and I fish in a lake near my house for bass and tiger muskellunge. However, sometimes I go to NJ to visit my brother and we do salt water fishing (flounder). I see that most of the "lake videos" on youtube shows people using baitcasting which makes me thing I probably didnt buy the right equipment. I would like to know how important is the reel you use when it comes to catching fish. thanks.

    You know there is a brake on the closed face spincast too. You just depress the line release tab as you cast and it stops the line.

  • @Thibeinn
    @Thibeinn 8 років тому

    Two more cons for spincast reels. One, if you get a tangle, you have to remove the outer cap (they unscrew), then remove a tiny nut to get the inner cap off to get at the tangle. If you happen to drop that tiny nut in the water, or in the grass and can't find it, the spincast reel instantly becomes useless. Two, some of the internal parts are made of metals which easily corrode/rust thus those parts don't last long.

      Pro: The Zebco 33 (as mentioned by others, here) comes already spooled for about $30 - for that price, I just buy 3 a year for my 3 rods and consider it fair (if I even need to replace one - unless I drop it in the lake or use up all the line snagging and changing lures, one can last more than a year).

    When using a baitcaster, does it reduce the chance of the line snapping when casting? Because i lost a couple lures with my spinning rod due to the line snapping, also because i dont own a baitcaster reel and rod

    • @dailydipster7924
      @dailydipster7924 8 років тому

      +chris gomez how the hell did you lose your lure when casting? If its snapping like that you should check and see if you are using a good knot. If you tie a knot the wrong way the line can break easily.

    • @Thibeinn
      @Thibeinn 8 років тому +2

      +Daily Dipster Or you could be using lures way too heavy for the pound test of the line on your reel.

    • @Thibeinn
      @Thibeinn 8 років тому

      +Daily Dipster If you tie a knot the wrong way, the knot may come undone but the line won't break.

    • @dailydipster7924

      if you tie it the wrong way it can frail the line

    • @Thibeinn
      @Thibeinn 8 років тому +1

      The word "frail" is not a verb. A person cannot "frail" anything. There is no way to tie a knot which will cause the line to break. Such a thing is a popular misconception tho.

    Experienced baitcaster fishermen can easily cast further than people with spincast reels, also with a lot more accuracy. Baitcasters are also stronger, and lighter. Me personally use baitcasters for all artificial lures and I use my spincast reels for live bait and for using popping corks.

    Spincast (aka zebco): good for teaching kids how to fish and catch their first panfish. Spinning: Best for taking another step up from zebco, great for light line applications such as crappie, walleye, panfish, and they work great for throwing baits and for finesse fishing, as well as bass, though they are not as good as baitcasters for bass. Baitcasters: The toughest to use without getting a bird nest. Great for power fishing heavy lures for big bass and Muskie and pike. Variations of baitcasters are even used for saltwater.

    • @speedee2003
      @speedee2003 8 років тому

      I fish saltwater a lot and caught a few cobia, tarpon, amberjack, shark, red drum on spinning reel. Those fight harder and run much faster than muskie or pike or any freshwater fish so I don't see why it can't be use of pike, bass or muskie. Spinning or baitcasting to me is just personal reference.

    Take apart your spincast reel, clean the parts with WD40, get some reel grease and reel oil, and grease the gears and the spool (front and back) and oil the shafts, pin and the handle. It will last you years if you do this every winter. Also, do this to all of your reels.
