- The supercharged gen4 h6 is no longer. Here's some clips of the exhaust note filmed before the partout.
The setup originally made 237.8kw at the wheels @8psi on 98 Octane when it was in my sedan with a refreshed engine. Unfortunately the wagon which I purchased with 287,000km was starting to show its age mechanically. The untouched stock engine didn't take well to the boost, and at the first service at 290,000km the engine was showing signs of a blown headgasket.

ive been in both a 911 gt3rs and a subaru legacy 3.0r
they sound almost the same inside the car (now that i think of it, not really)
porsche sounded a lot more refined and kinda wild,
subaru was a bit raspier and doesnt rev as high

I owned one and the first thing I did was have it upgraded to domestic spec and let it breathe. Much nicer throttle response.
ezs and egs sound so much better when built, sure the porche engine sounds good from factory but the way that modified subaru flat 6s sound when under boost is insane compared to porches.

Maybe because that's how Boxer engines are supposed to sound?? The "rumble" isn't true boxer sound. This is.

My first car had that engine. Ripped the exhaust off at the header when I was on a trail. The drive home was rowdy, and it sounded like this. They're amazing engines. Good thing it had an aluminum oil pan cuz i dented it on rocks

Not because i cried. My eyes were shut and i didn't breathe for one entire minute after already exhaling, to catch my breath and start a coughing fit. Im still here. This sounds like 6 gsxr1'2'00 bikes evenly synchronized. That is by far the best sounding H6 setup.
The rpm's just aren't there to be a GSXR.

This film reminds me of OUTBACK BP I used to have. It was a fabulous car.
Drove a 2004 H6 for 3.5 years and the day I traded it in was a sad one. I dreamed of supercharging it. Maybe someday! These cars are amazing and there's a reason you don't see tons on the secondary market-people do not give them up, because they're amazing. Tha sedan could go almost anywhere.
So why you trade it?
The H6 and Porsche flat 6 are the closest sound to a V12 out of a 6cyl. Just like UEL on a 4cyl (subie rumble) the offset placement of the H configuration naturally gives this engine a UEL. So therefore it produces a baby V12 sound effect. Almost like how the 4cyl UEL that makes the subie rumble is trying to replicate an crossplane V8. Crazy how pipes and configurations can alter sound. 😂
Reasons why i keep my 2002 Outback 3.0 LL Bean sedan , every time I drive by people they think it's a Porsche 911GT3 going by with the exhaust setup i have on it , literally the ultimate sleeper lol

@@roboticunclephil accidentally giving you a very early relpy, but a stock EZ30r can take up to around 250KW before you seriously risk stuff breaking on the stock engine. all depends on the amount of torque really though

Hey Josh nice ride, Are you going to do an update on the new setup? Chasing 500kw on this motor is ambitious however I'm glad someone is giving it a go good luck with it.
Hey mate,
Updates will follow but it'll be quite a while off for several reasons. I'm still accruing parts for the engine build, obviously coronavirus is slowing down manufacturing and shipping globally as well as the fact that I've lost my license for 8 months and can't really drive to pick-up and organise parts.
Here's the run down of where I'm at at the moment. Stock engine necked itself after about 3 hours of street abuse on the turbo setup, so the car is sitting as is. Engine parts wise I've got;
CNC closed-deck block halves
ARP2000 12mm hyrbid headstuds
PPM 4340 billet rods and PPM bearings
264/268 custom cams are currently being tested and manufactured by Kelford.
Still yet to order pistons and valvetrain components as well as smaller things like headgaskets and oil management. Once I've got everything it'll go to an engine builder to be balanced, machined and assembled which could take 3-4 months wihin itself.
Outside of the engine, the car needs a serious fuel system upgrade, standalone engine management and at the very least a rear diff upgrade. Recently ordered a Shockworks BBK too. All lots of money as i'm sure you're aware. Plan is to chill with the engine for a bit and get the rest of the car prepared.

So, if I understand correctly: after 3000km you started having problems? Mine has around 270,000km, drivetrain-wise: heads done two times since I've owned it (valves, gaskets and everything that's included with taking them off), a mishimoto radiator, a fully rebuilt 6-speed, full exhaust and so on... I was really considering a raptor blower but after this rather startling description of your case, Imma have to rethink it again. What was your experience like? What do you recommend?
All depends on the service history of the motor to be completely honest mate. This one had been completely thrashed and never had timing/rocker covers/headgaskets replaced. Ran low on oil as judging by the state of the rod bearings too. As long as the car has been well looked after it should respond fine to a bit of boost. I'd reccomend spending a bit of extra money to pull it apart, machine block and heads, fresh timing components + gaskets as well as a good clutch and flywheel. This is a solid setup that will compliment the charger and make the car feel like a whole different weapon! I made 178kw atw with my rebuilt n/a engine - most make 150 ish.
Thanks, that of course makes a lot of sense. Did you add boost on stock ECU? Mine has some serious e-throttle lag, honestly the only thing I don't absolutely adore about the car.
Stock ecu tuned via opensource by a local tuning shop. Stock ecu is fine up until 15 or so psi I've heard

@@ProjectBlastOff really hard to tell you what a shop will charge as I've seen some quote $4000, and some quote $8000. Because of the technicality of these engines most will just want to replace a blown headgasket engine with a wrecker motor. I did it all myself and parts (gasket kit, spark plugs, timing chains, oil pump, water pump, exedy hd clutch and lightened flywheel) cost me just under $3000. Without the clutch and flywheel you could do it for about $1600 in parts.
how much do you recon it cost to install and get it tuned? im in melbourne
The kit is around $7500, fuel pump will be around $300 and tune around $1200. So budget 9k

Mines just tuned with airflow upgrades, extractor, exhaust etc. Surprises lots of people at the lights. Looking at doing suspension upgrade next. Any suggestions?
My shockworks ride beautiful and really tighten up around the corners. Couldn't reccomend more.

@@Alock94 it's not actually in mexico. "Going down to mexico" or "racing in mexico" are terms to not get you in trouble. If you were racing in mexico it means you can't get in trouble with your local police. It's just a term to say you were racing without actually doing anything illegal

Just bought one, uses the same fuel as my old sr20 Primera wagon, way more responsive, sounds way better. The only thing I will say is the suspension picks up every wobble and bump on our Nz roads 😂😂

pretty sure most people just do a Y, from the headers going into one exit pipe, but dual exhausts would probably sound good too, and keep it straight dont need no mufflers >:)

I want to turbo or supercharge an h6 in an outback with sti 6speed. Thoughts?
I'd say it comes down to your budget, power goal, and what the car is being used for. SC with this raptor kit is going to run you around $8000 USD: for the exhaust, kit, and tune. This number assumes you do the kit install yourself and pay for exhaust work and tune. This will get you 300whp very max. Now, turbo is gonna be $$$$$+. You have additional exhaust work to do, plus build the engine. You could do a low boost turbo I suppose, but at that point you might as well go back to the SC option cause it's cheaper. Hope that helps
