How time flies ! This review was made a month before the pandemic . Well earlier today I ordered online via the SAQ this excellent product. The provincial government run institution got 500 bottles and there is a pre-sale taking place right now.

The quintessential triple distilled Irish single malt whiskey.

According to the Irish whiskey museums website - "When you talk to the Scots, well, they tell you of the hard written evidence that proves whiskey was in distillation in 1494. There is a record on the Exchequer Rolls of ‘eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae’. Well you just can’t dispute that fact.
Alas, to Scottish dismay there is new evidence to suggest that indeed the Irish were distilling Irish whiskey before Friar John. According to Barry Walsh, an author writing for the Whiskey Magazine, tanned reindeer skin with carved writing dating back to pre-Christian times has been discovered along the River Liffey during some excavation works.
When ‘translated’ it states that a man called Pah-Dee “Resumed heating the murky bubbly mixture of grain and water, and collected a fiery liquid through worm and reed pipe. Tastes bad. Made me dizzy and sick and I had to lie down” and continues to refer to it as the “fire water”.
If it truly exists, where is the reindeer skin hiding now? For those who are a little more skeptical there are further written records of Irish whiskey in the Annals of Clonmacnoise dating back to 1405, stating “A.D. 1405. Richard Magrannell Chieftain of Moyntyreolas died at Christmas by taking a surfeit of aqua vitae."

Lots of confusing commentary about pot still whiskey, which is simply an Irish malt whiskey that contains a percentage of unmalted barley in the mash (and no more than 5% grain, but few recipes contain any). In Ireland both Single malt and single pot still must be distilled entirely in pot stills. Even in Japan where column stills have been used to distill 100% malt, it is not referred to as single malt but instead as categorized as grain whiskey because of the laws. “Single Malt” is always distilled in pot stills.

@@LemonTweast Good question. I intend to at sometime open it but the problem is that ive got other bottles that have been sitting around in my cellar for a number of years +the newer bottles and I normally have the newer ( lately bought to 3 years) open. All will be open and enjoyed at sometime. 👍🥃☺

When I reviewed the Bushmills 10 recently, someone had a go at me for perpetuating the myth that Bushmills was the oldest whiskey in the world. I pointed out, that I merely said what the distillery claims to be - the old licensed distillery in the world. That said, as far as I can see, the first ever proper mention of whiskey (aqua vitae) ever recorded in writing was in the Red Book of Ossory when Chieftan Richard of Moyntytreolas died at Christmas from drinking too much of it - or as the book says: "died at Christmas from taking a surfeit of aqua vitae"

I got confused. A single pot still is 100% malted and unmalted barley, but this whiskey is a single malt; so it has to be 100% malted barley only, right?

I'm from Northern Ireland, my brother just bought me a bottle of this recently. Not sure if Bushmills has changed hands but the bottling and marketing of their products has changed since this review. Tasted the chocolate from the beginning, along with dark fruits but it wasn't as intense as I was expecting, especially in comparison to the glenronach port wood which is a nas but I think its 46%. Great review 👏
