Yeah this was EXACTLY how I was in my first meeting with work after the social unrest was at its worst. People talking and telling me how to feel and me feeling like I was going to explode with emotions in my zoom meeting .
Janelle took the show in about a minute. Astounding, blunt, unapologetic and challenging. As it should be. Edit: wow, the likes guys! Petty in context, I know.
Janelle is so articulate and powerful with her words. I liked hearing her perspective and the subtle force force in her words. I also believe Reese truly understands her privilege and is working to make changes.
Janelle Monae came to discuss what should be the number one topic in Hollywood right now. Reese Witherspoon at least tried to stand up and be counted. Zendaya looks agitated at the whole thing...and I agree with her. The rest of the women look scared, and Helena Bonham Carter looks bored and ready for her afternoon martini.
Yes to Janelle shutting down Jennifer, Helena, and Reese's narrative of how COVID created space for reflection and action, as though it hasn't disproportionately impacted black communities and left many, many people in high stress situations with little to no financial stability. And that's not even mentioning the literal trauma(s) continuously inflicted on black people with little to no recourse or justice. The lack of perspective is astounding.

I think it is about starting conversations, these white powerful actresses should be asking, where is the people of colour and women, and LGBTQ people, and who is on your board making choices etc, all white men no doubt. This is just one singular aspect of how change can happen. We need to not accept systems and speak up, all of us collectively. There isn't going to one quick fix, this is a raw subject, that affects too many lives unfairly, and its time to change. Speak up and out, and do something that will change the current norms. Once you ask those questions too, you can then act on them. Well, no I won't work for you because... This injustice is soo far reaching. everything we can do to change it will help and matter.

Cali Tovar it’s amazing you seem to have no idea how racist this statement is. You’re really ok with just wearing your racism out loud like that? If you refuse to acknowledge that, that’s racism.
THANK YOU Jannelle for your Covid-19 perspective. As a teacher, equity issues are real especially in the low- socioeconomic community in which I teach with families who were already struggling and food insecure. My colleagues did not appreciate Reese Witherspoon’s pandering to teachers with her dress company- her “free” dress for teachers was just insensitive bait. when Aniston started rambling about this pandemic sheltering as “the time to be alone and not distracted was divine timing,” she was referring to her own non-essential self, not the essential workers who still had to go to work. and when she went on about not being distracted to have to “go to work or go to dinners,” does she not hear herself? yes. because she is so tone-deaf. so many families struggling bc of lay-offs, adversely affecting those who were already financially and food insecure. but what really got me was her whining about that “fuckin show,” the one that actually enabled her non-essentiality so she could divinely stay home and not have to worry about going out to dinners. be grateful for your privilege and take Jannelle’s advice and check it sometimes.

The part that gets to me the most is, why did the white celebrities involved have nothing to offer regarding the topic? Nothing. We saw Reese going on about 'the projects she gets' and 'women roles' (most of her career is about bringing up women projects , I understand ) but what is new? what did she bring to the social unrest right now? what did she say that did not involve her? while Jennifer talks about 'Rachel Green' and 'exciting times'. Did anyone there who is fully white educate theirselves and learn something new that they could have brought to this conversation? Very tone deaf. Very. Janelle and Zendaya should have been collaberated with celebrities who could have provided SOME output. Outlets need to stop picking celebrities who are aesthetically trending to talk about issues.
Because you didn't understand her statement! Everyone is so quick to attack white people now... while we have immense empathy for our fellow black humans, we still have our own fucking lives and perspective that deserve respect.
Aneeka R. ur absolutely right about the part where jennifer and reese we’re speaking on matters of their own trying to relate to the blm movement but it’s jus not the same thing.. AT ALL
Love how people find it hard to accept that all of these women are talented, must we drag down and compare the talent and success of women all the time? Crazy how society cannot seem to just appreciate that they are all wonderful in their own respective ways
I agree. They're all exceptional in their respective fields, and yet they're getting compared against each other and hauled over the coals by commenters for not saying exactly the right things in exactly the right way. It's disappointing and quite saddening to see the vehement criticisms here. They could have all chosen to stay at home & ignore the phone but they showed up just to get shot down in one way or another. Successful, visible women are still seen as 'easy targets' for people's discontent. We have a long, long way to go evidently...
Did they edit this video together funny, or did the really just ask a question about race/BLM and have 3 white people answer, skip to the next question on race/ BLM and have another white person answer before hearing from any black actress, then skip back to Reese again.
They asked a question and the guests spoke. You have to take accountability. If the black people wanted to speak first so much, they would have. They were listening and being part of a conversation, as equals. As an equal you don’t jump on top of each other and be the loudest. Leave them all alone! Implying that the black women here were victimised somehow is an insult to them. And you’re implying they have no power or choice. What a silly comment.
Why? The moderator didn't choose who had to answer the question and i think the black actresses wanted to see how the white actresses would answer. Honestly i truly don't understand the logic of the comment. The point is not "who speaks first", but that they all speak. I do think the answers from Jennifer and Helena were quite weird and i was disappointed with them, and maybe you wouldn't have heard them if the black girls had already spoken.
Janelle is so unimpressed and I had the same face listening to this. There's a deaf tone to the way times up is mentioned in correlation to Black lives mattering. One can't be an advocate for Times up and not be as stressed about what black bodies are experiencing in America, its really not a jovial conversation about changing times and how much liberation the info age has brought.
Today i saw an interview with Viola Davis, when she sayed: she is so talent like Meryl Streep and Juliane Moore, from amazing university too, but VIOLA doesn't has chance to have amazing dresses designers, and amazing salary compare to the other two actresses. If it is difficult even for Viola, then imagine the other black actresses, how many challenges they must face as well. Everything is very sad, in hollywood, and also in the world, all hatred, and lack of opportunity.
No one sees the irony that there is no Asians or Latins on any of these panels… When is Hollywood going to cast everyone, not just a percentage of minorities?
Everyone sees it. I think that’s what these protests and movements have helped to address. It’s overdue that the idea of whiteness being the default and anything else being the “other” or the “token” be rid of. It is amazing how black people are often able to be a voice for change in the progression of rights for other minorities as well.
especially when Jennifer (who I love usually) say it's oddly beautiful. It took a black man dying at the hands of police for her and other white people to be like holy shit, what is happening, there's no diversity etc.
imagine being in a call with zendaya and janelle monae at the same time? i would feel intimidated asf. these are 2 of what i consider the top 5 beautiful actresses of our time. also love how powerful janelle was.
Whoever edited this deserves a raise. No lag time or awkward silences. Kept the pace and energy of the conversations going. Mad props. Oh yeah, would Hollywood Reporter consider hiring people of color to moderate these panels too? Clearly there has be more diversity of asking crucial questions in this changing industry.
Janelle is just brilliant! I understand Jennifer's opening comment and how she sees the positive but it didn't acknowledge the suffering and struggle and I agree, that was a bit tone deaf. I read a comment that said the conversation shouldn't have shifted to Times UP as that conversation only benefits wealth white women but I disagree. There were women of colour who were and are adversely affected by sexism in Hollywood. As a mixed race entrepreneur, I experience discrimination but sometimes the lines are blurred between sexism and racism. For a conversation with women, I think to cover both issues is important.
Zendaya raised a valid point about not taking up space for others who are really seen in Hollywood. And to see people like Helena, Reese, and Jen who have been in the business for so long and have been giving so many opportunities it felt a little bit too on the nose, especially when Jen complained about not being seen following her Friends success.
lmfao, jen complaining about not being seen because of her Friends success was SUCH a joke! And she was SO eager to be the first to talk about how that has ruined her chances to be taken seriously. she is SO disconnected it's SAD! That is NOT even the type of issues the moderator was even talking about, lmao. My God, I didn't know she was an airhead in real life. Geezus!
@@jay2the Didn't the moderator ask if as actresses they felt they weren't seen in any other light? She literally answered the question and spoke about how she felt after being Rachel in Friends. I don't think she did the best job at answering it, she sounded like a brat. However, she answered the question..... She was on the show for 10 years. That is a long time.
@@jay2the she isnt a airhead, she actually advocates for BLM movement on the daily contributing over millions of dollars to the movement, she knows as a white woman she is privileged, she shouldnt have said what she said but that doesnt make her a airhead

Reese Witherspoon: & now we know there’s a huge audience for that. Zendaya: fake smile. Me: Of course there’s an audience for other stories because people of color exist. Duh.
I don’t like that some had more time to speak than others. I really think Reese cares about these issues and spoke her truth, Helena looked very observant but confused 💀, Janelle was passionate and articulate/confident, Zendaya looked like she had a lot on her mind (and I personally think she should’ve had more time to talk) Jennifer I think meant well and wanted to seem attentive to the conversation, but didn’t really seem like she was there, and then there was sweet Rose 🙈 as intelligent as she is, who also didn’t get a lot of time to speak. This round table had an interesting line-up with a very strange chemistry, and was also just way too short given these difficult topics that were discussed for a brief 18 minutes. The whole thing seemed rushed.
This had so much potential, was truly excited. Instead I’m left cringing the entire time whenever a white struggle was mentioned. Not their fault (or is it?) I mainly blame the interviewer or cut of this video. More questions linked to BLM directed to the appropriate people thanks.
WOW my favourite round table so far ! Zendaya and Rose Byrne finally being in the conversation with heavyweights as they should be ! Love all these women!
I don’t know what Rose is currently doing, since I haven’t seen tv in the last five years but I think she used to be snubbed in her Damages era, she was awesome in that show and could go head to toe with Glenn Close.
EXACTLY!! Native Americans and Asians have always been the LEAST represented in the film industry. That’s just a fact. We need diversity of all races ✊
@@passionskayandmiguel And South Asians (Indians) too! (I'm not sure if you meant them as well by Asian because everyone thinks that Indian is a race when it's a nationality.)
All of these ladies are amazing. My favourite performances were Rose Byrne's, Jennifer Aniston's, and Zendaya's. Layered and nuanced. Though all the ladies are super talented. Why was this so short though?
Reese said it! They’ve been saying for years that black stories don’t do well in other countries. Reese just said that was a lie. It’s time for Hollywood to step up!
Everything aside, I think the Hollywood Reporter and the people involved at home who helped set up the cameras did a fantastic job! A roundtable interview without a roundtable yet it feels just as if not more personal! Good job, you guys!
i feel like reese took away from the current black lives matter movement by talking about the me too movement. both are extremely important movements but it seemed like “aboutism;” aka reese can’t relate to the blm movement so she made the situation revolve around her & the me too movement which primarily affects white women. reese was trying to say how good of an ally she is to the black community but instead she could’ve given her time to janelle and zendaya because black voices need to be heard
i was thinking the exact same thing and when she mentioned that she wants to take new roles that create change and blah blah blah but no one rlly stood up for the blm movement and speak up on it
can't wait for the full episode to be released! there was so much they talked about and i'm really interested in hearing them all talk about their experiences
Janelle ofcourse talking about her people, she is also basically talking about what it means to wanna be seen as human, not stereotyped.....this is a fundamental quest for freedom that she is talking about.I hope this has inspired the others interms of not tying their self identity to status and privillage they are acustommed to and see others as human.
I am nearly 14 minutes into this 18 minute-long video and it’s the first time Rose talked. She barely got to say anything, as well as Zendaya. I love Reese, but we need more from these queens! Also, this is irrelevant, but Rose & Zendaya are the only ones with nice houses, at least nice backgrounds. The old lady’s background looks like she does witchcraft tbh, it’s quite creepy.
They could've easily jumped in the conversation because that's what everyone else did. It's not like you had to raise your hand. Just jump in there real quick 😂

And ironically they are much more successful than most of the commenters
This is the only Roundtable that I've seen so far, where I love all the guests equally.
I wish they'd respond, I would love to know
They asked a question and the guests spoke.
@@gottalovetheinternet you really don't get it, do you?
There is a full length video out. This was edited (poorly) to be shorter
Yall need to promote the roundtables because this is too good and really underrated
I love how all of them are smiling at Zendaya while she speaks! They look genuinely proud of her.
No one sees the irony that there is no Asians or Latins on any of these panels… When is Hollywood going to cast everyone, not just a percentage of minorities?
i mean there are other videos i’ve seen with amazing talented asian and latina women but definitely not enough
I wish Sandra Oh was here
Everyone sees it. I think that’s what these protests and movements have helped to address. It’s overdue that the idea of whiteness being the default and anything else being the “other” or the “token” be rid of. It is amazing how black people are often able to be a voice for change in the progression of rights for other minorities as well.
Latins? They arent in hollywood that much
Thank you! It would’ve been nice to see more Asians and Latins for sure...
Zendaya is such an inspiration. Still early in her career outside of Disney, and yet she's already surrounded by these legends!
Love each and every actress on this panel, however, Janelle needs her own 30 minute episode. Perfectly articulated.
Whew Janelle! ❤️ so moved by her introduction.
“How do you feel about all the social unrest?”
*three white women answer*
Not a good look gals...
Even calling it unrest instead of calls for justice and action did not sit well with me :/
@@ayomade7496 AT ALL! that's the one thing I was looking forward to Janelle correcting her on. Call it for wtf it is. this is apart of the problem.
especially when Jennifer (who I love usually) say it's oddly beautiful. It took a black man dying at the hands of police for her and other white people to be like holy shit, what is happening, there's no diversity etc.
YEP
Yeah, white woman shouldn't ever speak, there whiteness is offensive enough. Give me a break...
imagine being in a call with zendaya and janelle monae at the same time? i would feel intimidated asf. these are 2 of what i consider the top 5 beautiful actresses of our time. also love how powerful janelle was.
You might feel intimidated but why would they?
I'm so glad Zendaya is on here, getting the starlight she deserves!
Now imagine the zoom conversation that Janelle and Zendaya had after...that should’ve been streamed!
Janelle Monáe is wonderful.
Absolutely
Reese is amazing. She really empowers women, and uses her platform to push other women forward.
I came to hear Zendaya
seeing Zendaya with these big actors makes me so proud!
Can we get a POC round table? This is what Janelle meant by actions rooted in service!!
In an 18miniutes FIVE minutes in, everyone has said something, But Zendaya, she made us wait😂😂🥰
The morning show and Euphoria are brilliant beyond words
This full discussion will be AMAZING.
Can't wait to hear the rest!
Janelle Monae shook the table...and the camera!!
Lmao @ Jennifer Anistons facial expressions everything after Janelle Monae says. I really wonder her thoughts
Janelle speaking. Me: preach it sista!
None of these women need to sugar coat anything.
You can tell that Zendaya looks up to and admires Janelle. I love when we are heroes for each other. Beautiful
Janelle Monae FTW! I love how unapologetic she is
Why only 18 minutes???? 😥
Because it's women. We don't want to give them too much of a platform.
i guess its like a promo..look at 18:01...it says 'watch the full episode on sundancetv.. premieres august 23'
Swasthi B thanks for pointing that out! I was afraid it was only 18 minutes because they weren’t together.
@@grayninja9958 bro you can watch women's roundtables from other years and it's always around 1 hour just like the men's. Don't give a bad name to feminists with petty shit like this fr
I know i wish it had been longer
Men have less
Why so shortttt! Are we not getting the 1 hour version?
Thts coming in august
Janelle was excellent.
Sometimes I wonder if the creators of Euphoria would’ve even casted a dark skin full black girl with 4c hair as the main character (Rue Bennett)
Don’t think so to be honest, only “biracial” people feel safe to audiences, had she been cast as Ariel, she wouldn’t have had as much backlash
iNews true
Chanel Williams exactly. I wish they made more opportunities for medium skins and dark skins...and a lot of the opportunities we do get mostly have to do with slavery or race.
Neran Okari how
Reese Witherspoon: & now we know there’s a huge audience for that.
Zendaya: fake smile.
Me: Of course there’s an audience for other stories because people of color exist. Duh.
they ALL have AirPods...idk I find that extremely interesting how popular ONE thing can be lol
Pretty sure THR sends them a phone plus headphones
lol totally getting the grandma vibe from Helen Bonham Carter, I laughed at 14:23
I don’t like that some had more time to speak than others.
Love Rose.
Love Rose 💜
Paloma Vega omg I completely agree! Time and time again, she was snubbed for her damages work. She truly is a favourite of mine!
Chanel Williams It feels like forever ago that euphoria came out so that’s why I say finally.
Literally no one is doing anything right now, and this is only 18 minutes long????
I think the full episode will be available after 23rd August?
My thoughts exactly!
Right!?!?! Far to short!
hmm they're talking about diversity.. not a single Asian person there when at least Sarandra Oh could've been there
EXACTLY!! Native Americans and Asians have always been the LEAST represented in the film industry. That’s just a fact. We need diversity of all races ✊
@@passionskayandmiguel they are
@@passionskayandmiguel And South Asians (Indians) too! (I'm not sure if you meant them as well by Asian because everyone thinks that Indian is a race when it's a nationality.)
and latin people
@@us8721 hear hear or is here here. Anyway bravo for your comment
I saw Homecoming recommended on Prime and now after seeing her talk about it I will definitely start it! Glad to see her in a leading role on a show.
All of these ladies are amazing. My favourite performances were Rose Byrne's, Jennifer Aniston's, and Zendaya's. Layered and nuanced. Though all the ladies are super talented. Why was this so short though?
Ok but like this is some of the coolest indeviduals ever
Shirley Bailey sorry I’m dyxlectic
Reese said it! They’ve been saying for years that black stories don’t do well in other countries. Reese just said that was a lie. It’s time for Hollywood to step up!
Reese is killing it ♥️
I want to see Janelle and Reese have a conversation. powerful fucking minds.
Homecoming has been a rollercoaster of a story. It was truly awesome.
I want to see a round table with no white actors. No joke.
They do those from time to time Seperarist meetings where skin color is what unites them and not ideas/perspectives.
Everything aside, I think the Hollywood Reporter and the people involved at home who helped set up the cameras did a fantastic job! A roundtable interview without a roundtable yet it feels just as if not more personal! Good job, you guys!
Helena speaking facts at the beginning: because of COVID-19 we can no longer use the excuse of being busy to educate ourselves.
Janelle said some really strong points...she is amazing. I want to also watch homecoming now
i feel like reese took away from the current black lives matter movement by talking about the me too movement. both are extremely important movements but it seemed like “aboutism;” aka reese can’t relate to the blm movement so she made the situation revolve around her & the me too movement which primarily affects white women. reese was trying to say how good of an ally she is to the black community but instead she could’ve given her time to janelle and zendaya because black voices need to be heard
i was thinking the exact same thing and when she mentioned that she wants to take new roles that create change and blah blah blah but no one rlly stood up for the blm movement and speak up on it
Janelle and Reese said a mouthful!! way to go ladies!!
Saw Jen's name & I automatically clicked. Luv watching her always. She was phenomenal in TMS.
Same
can't wait for the full episode to be released! there was so much they talked about and i'm really interested in hearing them all talk about their experiences
Janelle is amazing!!
She speaks so wellll
REESE is also amazing as well!
They all are!!
So irrelevant about the houses and why you gotta disrespect Helena just bc you don't know her
They could've easily jumped in the conversation because that's what everyone else did. It's not like you had to raise your hand. Just jump in there real quick 😂
zendaya’s face here is literallt me in my zoom class meetings
