Helena being the only one with a dark background make so much sense
Right?! She’s extra without trying and I like it.
Love, Love, Love Helena...(!)
I mean, she’s Bellatrix, after all. ☺️
I’d be suspicious if she were in a well lit room with white walls, that’s just not HBC lol
isn't her time zone different? suits her tho
Am i the only one who noticed when Zendaya was talking everyone everyelse was smiling at her like they were her proud aunts?? I thought it was rlly sweet
Just me, ok lol
lol 100%
I totally did! 😂
I love the support!!
Yes literally starting @13:36 😭💚💚
Yasss
janelle shifted the ENTIRE tone of the rest of the interview with that opener. Really made them check their privilege at the door. Hearing them talk about a viral pandemic & systemic racism as a “blessing in disguise” was so cringe. Thank god they got janelle in this roundtable because zendaya was clearly thinking it, but i dont think she would have said anything as she’s a little more timid it seems, but janelle was very much no holds barred right from the jump. Had to rewind that part, it literally gave me chills lmao this interview just made me love her even more
@M. Jacobson you referencing a "conservative actress" as the end all be all is literally everything i need to know lmao that doesn't even make sense. You and your "writer friend" should educate yourselves a little more instead of going through life thinking that just because bad things happen to white people too, it means that systemic racism doesn't exist. That's a very dangerous ideology to have...
@@jennaxm It's pointless to discuss with the M.Jacobsons of this world. They think in their tiny minds that its all a fuss about racism.
@@jennaxm Well is going to take like 1 billion of Janelle´s to remove systematic racism. which is sad but is the truth. I don't think we will see it in our generation.

@M. Jacobson best comment on here. 👏👏
That moment Janelle shot down the rainbows and butterflies and brought the white voices to reality real quick.
Brought down the whole interview after she spoke. Fully understand what she wants to mention but. It stopped being a conversation and it was absurdly hostile. Saying that people need to prove themselves is just too much. If you don’t want help then or voices speaking for the movement, then do it yourself. Doesn’t seem to have been working at all without external help.
@@GeorgeRivera21 I agree but I still complete understand why she did what she did and why she said what she said however uncomfortable the message needs to be brought across.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fr tho!
@@GeorgeRivera21 she answered honestly. You view it as hostile but what was she supposed to do? Act like everything is fine? This is a painful time, she is in pain and just had to listen to Helena saying it is a privilege to live in the making of history as she sits in her nice home in england as a white woman while Janelle is in America as a black woman watching people who look like her get killed for nothing.
Pennywise Discount Negroids She knows if she wasn’t “rich” she may be in the same position as the women and men who look just like her. That’s scary.

I've always been impressed with Zendaya even when she was like 14. She's so eloquent, mature, confident and powerful. She's just excellence, gifted and a true professional. You don't really see that often even in most adults. *Or maybe I haven't*

Janelle saying “this is not a time of reflection for our people” is everything.
Hats off to Janelle for bravely holding up the mirror of privilege to every single one of them who were saying that the pandemic has oddly been a blessing in disguise giving them the time of reflection. Its been a blessing for them because they're privileged enough to live just fine without having to work daily, they'll be fine if they don't earn a penny for months on end...they'll be fine because they don't have a landlord to kick them out or police shooting them for being on the streets after being kicked out...Thank you Janelle for bravely not settling for empty white responses of "prayers and thoughts"..Thank you for being brave enough to make them uncomfortable by mentioning their privilege and lack of action towards solidarity.

Every word Janelle Monae spoke is beyond just inspirational but essential that these tough conversations that black people often have to start should be everyone else's job to finish.
Like "de-fund the police"? I'm no American, but I can't comprehend why people think that de-funding police would increase it's quality instead of the complete opposite.
@@nemir6872 Because there is genuinely no reason for the police to be armed like soldiers, covered from their feet to the top of their head. A lot of situations don’t need for the police to actually be involved in, they lack of training, we know it, for example when suicidal people call the hotline, they send the police. They are not social workers, they don’t have a degree in mental health-related problems. Instead of de-escalating situations they might instead worsen it (shooting on autistic people..). You could defund the police and distribute that money to other infrastructures with more specific knowledge and experience to solve these issues.
We know that involving police in situations of abuse (partners beating their wives/husbands) is not the best solution to come-up with, studies have been made and they all show that an important amount of policemen are abusive with their partners (that applies in other countries like France too). Defunding an over-funded structure to distribute more fairly would also help keep crime rates low, studies have been made to prove that as well.
@@alexfriendarts4165 As for the "police has no genuene reason to be armed like soldiers" - yeah, in Europe, where the people aren't free to buy warfare weapons and generally don't have weapons, or have extremely strict laws on weapons....
"A lot of situations don’t need for the police to actually be involved in, they lack of training" And they are gonna get more and better training via defuding? It's not even about funding it's the laws and requirements. The lower the funding, the lower the standard, the worse the police. (That being said I don't know how USA police funding works - if most of the funding goes into weapons, then the primary issue isn't funding but gun laws)
As for policemen being generally more abusive. Well... Abusive and violent jobs tend to do that to people. I still can't connect that to funding. In fact that sounds like the police education, standards to becoming one, available psychiatric help and overall training quality aren't a) funded enough b) funded the right way.
You wanna make police useful in your country, not disable it - that doesn't serve anyone.
This is all none of my business ofc, but imho USA aint gonna solve a single police problem until they change gun laws - cuz only then will you make police "Less trigger happy/kill happy", and raising requirements to becoming a police officer - hardly achievable via de-funding.
And then you have the US prison system that is complete trash... Not to mention how courts function, there are so many problems that "de-funding police" is the last thing that should be on anyone's list that wants an impactful change (long term)
Nemir I think of it as our education system (and other sectors) gets little to none, but the police are overpaid the wealth is just unequally distributed
Nemir like I think it’s dumb to just say defund the police with no action plan, things will get reaaalllyyy shitty if it’s not done right
sigh celebrities calling the pandemic a blessing. Must be nice not to worry about jobs and money and safety

@@jamesmarie33 brah....
I feel what you’re saying. But to bring another perspective.. although I obviously don’t see the sickness or the deaths as a blessing, this Covid season has forced me to slow down and evaluate my life and get even closer to God so I’m a happier person. I know that’s not everyone’s experience but it’s been mine and I’m also still broke lol. Broke but feeling fulfilled. Covid made me realize how blindly busy I was living and neglecting things that I shouldn’t neglect
You know... I'm not white or rich, but I see the pandemic as a kind of a blessing, in the way that it has teached me to be thankful for the things that I have and to work harder for what I want in my life.
It is a blessing. The planet got to breathe and for them they got to lay back and not worry about not having a job too! They got they’re time. If you’ll consider your perspective include theirs.
Zendaya saying "boom" after Janelle's speech was so subtle and right and I loved it
God, Janelle is SO me. I heard Jenn speaking about how much of a “blessing” this was for some and my Black dark skin ass is like UHHHHH? Lucky, Janelle put her and the others into check with her words. Zendaya doubled down with “Boom” and smiling and nodding hard as she spoke. [I am also happy many agree with what I am saying in this comment down the comment section.]
I know, Jen’s response was so tone dead and out of touch! Janelle and Zendaya stoke the show and really held a mirror up to the white actresses’ privilege
I was disappointed in Jen because I am dark skin dreadlocks but I am a huge jen fan and friends fan and her response really made me realize how quiet she has been in all of the movements and how she was given everything from her dad so she is completely out of touch. of course they are. that is a ridiculous statement.
every human being matters regardless of our diversity and status in life and what we did to others. the worst thing is we harm one's soul thru our words. No one has been exempted of this pandemic, climate change, cruelty, damage, pain and all the chaos in the world. just be grateful that we are still alive to reflect and be ready at any moment we will face death. many people are suffering not only a specific group of people but other creatures on earth. try to look and listen to what is happening around you... care not only for the affected but for those who harmed you. To forgive someone is the best thing you can give to yourself. conquer your battles esp from within(hatred, envy and all the wickedness we have)

Helena Bonham Carter was AMAZING in this interview. Her humor is SO DRY. My fav quotes of hers in this interview.
“It’s all uppers and downers... the legal ones”
“The only parts for women were SO BAD”
“Everyone else has the funny lines... and What I’m doing is sooooo booooring”
what about when she said that the script of planet of the apes was bad. I died so funny lol
After this interview I think I found a new love for her she’s great
I remember protesting with Janelle back in 2016 and I knew she was about to drop some truths at this roundtable. She’s been protesting for years and finally we’re getting heard!
A lot of you actors are privileged. Being unemployed means something totally different from being a teacher than an over paid actor. Seriously. Smmfh.
Janelle Monae.....thank you for acknowledging your privilege. Your words are really powerful, truthful and needed to be spoken in front of these other actors. Well said.✊🏾
Helena fully called the planet of the apes script terrible BWHAHAHA, I love this woman so much
I imagine even when she was with Tim Burton she was letting him know exactly how she felt about it lol
@@mickyjoe97 lol haha and that’s when they met .
When Janelle speaks they SPEAK. you know those people who are quiet but have a loud presence - you just want to listen to everything they have to say, that's Janelle. I have so much respect for them.
She*
I'm here for Helena throwing MAXIMUM shade at Olivia Colman.
HBC indeed.
Reese is I think one of the intellectuals of Hollywood. She’s so smart😮
So proud of Janelle’s contribution to this conversation! Each actress had a unique viewpoint and were able to compliment each other so well. I admire them so much mostly because they have positive intentions in all that they do, more importantly during this great change we are all embarking on!
Jen’s statement about how great and reflective this time is so out of touch and Janelle’s eloquent retort is genuine and priceless. Throughout Janelle’s calm and heartfelt talk Jen looks visibly uncomfortable and even hardened at some points.
Rachel KAREN Green was popping up a little bit
theonly infini LMFAO😂😂
@@theonlyinfini LMFAO
Exactly
I noticed the same thing, almost defensive.
Janelle Monáo gave them a much needed reality check when she shouldn't have been burdened to do so.
That isn't what happened...She just was speaking her side...stop pitting them against each other
You can tell Zendaya is a little nervous and breathless lol. But she's sooo cute and strong.
I wonder if Zendaya felt isolated and if she could relate to the other grown women during this interview. While she’s in her early 20s, everyone else was between ages 35 to 55. At that age, Zendaya is still growing. Just a thought.
Probably not. She’s very mature and successful for her age and has obviously worked with older actors, she’s a force. She can hold her own.
They usually always have at least one younger person during these roundtables. I think it is good to have that younger perspective. They intentionally have that one person in their 20s or early 30s and it's good to hear from them.
I think she fell perfectly into it but yes she is obviously still young and a tiny bit nieve but she is definitely better than the milinials I meet smh
Lucky Libra lol in what way is she naive
@@luckylibra6131 The word is naive, and you used it incorrectly. Also, you meant Millennials.
That “BOOM” tho.
I loved when Reese said its okay to make people uncomfortable. That is the problem with systemic sexism and racism and ableism, the people who benefit from keeping those standards in place are not made to feel uncomfortable about it.
Ye that’s why black people say they can’t be racist because they are uncomfortable
I love how Rose is just patiently listening to the other ladies.
I want this interviewer do every roundtable after this. She asks really thought provoking questions and actually lets the actresses answer them
Is it just me or at the begging (when they were talking about the Pndemic) Zendaya and Janelle were not having it?
Zendaya looked kinda bored/pissed the whole time so it’s a bit hard to tell haha even though I’m sure she wasn’t. But with Janelle you could tell she wasn’t feeling Jen’s sanctimoniousness. She almost immediately jumped in with checking your privilege, specifically your class privilege and how this is a very difficult and scary time for 99% of the population who don’t have the luxury of lazing around in their million dollar mansions during quarantine.
probably just the undertone of anger, not at the roundtable but with what's going on, you can't go a day without thinking about it
vitamin cheese i agree, but i do feel that she had a little more of a pissed face at that moment, and i also say it bc she agreed with everything that Janelle said, more than the rest.
I’ve noticed
Yeah you could see it on their faces
MVPs for this episode: Janelle monae for being cool and making everyone reasses, zendaya for being zendaya, Helena bonham Carter
This interview is a microcosm of the reality of white privilege. It seemed the white folks just answered without hesitation to an open question for anyone. But it seemed the interviewer had to specifically address both Janelle and Zendaya in order for them to have the space to be heard - and their words were so beautiful, solid and real. More Janelle and Zendaya please!
It helps me to process that I need to listen more.
Thanks for pointing that out. Very good point. Just my intuition or guess so I could be way off but I got the feeling Janelle would've enjoyed saying more and for the conversation to center more on the BLM topic and less on the other stuff like female empowerment and family life of actresses, though I imagine she likely also cares about those things too.
This current BLM movement is I imagine a big chance for people of color to get to speak up and be heard much more about race issues than usual, so I think it could have been nice for this episode to talk even more about BLM and race and also more about more painful aspects of Covid such as the high unemployment and depression/anxiety rates. I do always wish poor people would be a bigger part of social issue talks and homeless people too and inmates and disabled and people hospitalized for mental health reasons...underprivileged folks like that. The pandemic stuff has a certain impact on them such as being in positions where quarantining is not an option. Though around here some organizations have gotten extra funding to help people due to panddmic stuff creating more needs so that's good. They also had a moratorium on evictions to help prevent people from going homeless. For example I've seen first-hand homeless day centers having limits on how many people they can allow and stress over figuring out mask and 6 ft policies and how much more stressed the staff has been over Covid. Support groups and therapists switching to phone or Zoom when that can be way less personal and many people can't access or use or feel comfortable on the internet. Less access to doctors and dentists. Hospitals a scarier place for people now due to fear of germs. OCD people's worst germ nightmare maybe coming true. Etc. Many or most immunocompromised folks I imagine have some big extra fears this year. I was a PCA this winter for an elderly man who was quite in feaf of germs, afraid to go outside, afraid to wash his face, glued to the news, very anxious.
Anyway, I know it was only an hour-long thing though and all the women contributed great stuff to this and it's not their responsibility to say everything perfectly. We all have different roles to play...it sounds like as artists (actresses) they've been part of some great movies (I haven't seen most of those but they sound good) and they do care about the world in various ways and about continuing to learn. I imagine being on this panel there's a lot of pressure to not say the wrong thing so that was brave they all spoke up so publicly on such sensitive issues. But I do hope we all keep getting more educated about our various privileges whether color of our skin, ability, income level, whether we have housing and food, health level, etc. We do all have our valid experiences. And someone having wealth and good health or being born with a certain skin color or a certain gender for example doesn't make them automatically a bad or insensitive person. It can be harder though to understand realities different than ours so it's really important to keep striving to understand. For example in the past I was homeless and very low-income and it's sometimes hard for me to believe wealthy folks who have never been through that can ever really get it. I had abuse trauma and certain triggers related to that which take a lot of energy to manage and it feels unlikely people who haven't really had anything like that will ever fully get it and at times their comments feel so out-of-touch and privileged. But for example I'm white and never been trans and I imagine I can never fully understand what it's like to be a POC or trans or especially both. But I want to keep listening and understanding better and growing! I'm sure I still have so much to learn!
As for it being a nice chance for us to slow down and hang out at home...I agree there is truth in that like say for people who barely saw their families before or took time to just be at home and be alone and lived in frantic overworked overbusy type states for example. So that's been a big deal for some people and a valid thing to point out. But for others it's not a time to relax much or at all whether they are home more or not. For many it has been extremely isolating and stressful and dangerous to live in a world with so much shut down, mask laws, germs anxiety, and people afraid to hug or shake hands or even gather too near each other.
Anyway, back to the original comment I agree that the two women of color seemed to feel less free speaking up maybe and that's a helpful thing to reflect on as maybe a reflection of POC voices not being as valued and welcomed by society. Im not assuming but am curious if they thought at all, "Well, as usual white people won't truly, truly get it anyway so maybe I won't bother here to speak my full mind on things. Plus people have the stereotype of the angry, black woman and also the pressure of how women are supposed to be polite...so maybe I better not speak up TOO much." Even very confident, empowered, "woke" people could I imagine struggle with thoughts like that due to systemic oppression. I've felt that way when wanting to speak up more on abuse and trauma for example to people I fear just will not truly get it. Not that it's fair for me as a white person to compare that to someone's experience of being a POC. But just reflecting here on how I can relate to finding it hard to be heard on some things that matter deeply to me and how that has hurt a lot. So in that way I can relate and find more compassion in me for others facing other power/oppression dynamics.
Well this was a long rambling comment to the internet but it felt good to share. I hope it contributes something positive to someone. If anything I wrote came out offensive or tone-deaf I hope someone gently points it out to me so I can keep growing. Peace! 🌟
I think they were just sitting back waiting for Jen and Reese to 'step in it"
I think ur ignorant in saying that. It felt like it just came down to experience.
As a white privileged woman I say, thank you Janelle.
I really like what she said about what she supports too!
it’s the acknowledgement of ur privilege and being an amazing person for it for me!
Stop making everything about race, making everything racial causes division.
@@sophcass2974 How is someone acknowledging their privilege causing division?
@@caitlyns871 because idk why its important or necessary to mention her race, I think because we place such an importance on race it unintentionally causes more division, because we keep placing importance on our differences instead of what we have in common.
Yes Janelle! I absolutely love how calm, collected, and articulate she is.
There are not enough comments about my good sis Reese Witherspoon basically gave the interviewer golden nuggets for her next questions for the other actresses. Reese is really a conversationalist, she could’ve lead this interview herself
I love how Reese contributes and builds upon Janelle's conversation - it goes to show that she knows her stuff and has actively educated herself on her privilege. I'm disappointed with Jen in this interview. The other two actresses are sitting there like lemons. Zendaya and Janelle are so needed in this interview to elucidate pressing and real issues (BLM HELLO!). I understand that white people need opportunities to learn about this from black women themselves, but its disappointing nevertheless. The demonstration of black excellence in this video (black women using their voice in such a sophisticated way) is unmatched.
The thing is I’m not surprised by Jennifer’s response. IMO She’s a D class actress wearing a white privilege Tshirt. She doesn’t possess any real humanity or have any conscious substance about her.
i low key wanna be here like be an actor and artist and talk like this with other people who are in the same industry
hey maybe we will some day ♡
Maybe we will 😉🙏🏾
I'm tearing up because everyone was so supporting and caring to Zendaya cause Zendaya is just amazing, Her Future is so bright✨and I love her so much ❤
Tearing up about something like that is a bit much
@@Nndggdcgc no it's not because If someone was that supportive of me and caring I'd probably even cry so please if you have nothing nice to say dont say it at all
Helena is the queen!!!! Weird, authentic, lovely, artsy... simply magical. What a magical woman!
I’m still so shocked at how they were basically... saying that this time was a blessed time or a time to reflect as if it was positive.. im stunned...
Some people are just so out of touch, it's tragic
I did too! I had time to reflect and overall 2020 was a very positive experience for me, personally. But that doesn’t mean that I am also not aware, in fact I am very actively involved locally, in the fight to dismantle racism! It’s OK for everyone to say what their experiences were. Lol. I can’t help that I am privileged, but what I can do is use that privilege, actively use it, in a way that will help and share voices like Jenelle. The first thing I did when I watched this interview is shared it on my Facebook because Jenelle speech was so great and so important. But if someone asked me how my quarantine was, about ME personally, I would immediately say that it was a great time to reflect and that I grew a lot. Because that’s my truth.

When Zendaya talks they tend to look at her like a daughter or something 😂🌟
😂😂😂
Let's change the title to include "Helen Boham Carter & Rose Byrne." As opposed to "more." As their work speaks for themselves; alongside the other talented actresses that are on this panel.
Exactly! Maybe it doesn't fit or something, but just lose the last names then.
