I feel your pain. I lost cylinder 4 back in January, unsure of the exact cause. Quote was $16k for a new motor so went the used route. Got one for $6k with 35k miles on it and zero problems with it.
Thanks bro. It sucks. Good news is I got myself a new ride and now I can solely focus the GTI on being a project car and not something I have to stay running for daily activities.
It happened so fast and without the engine firing because the timing chain jumped, I can bet money on it. The chain is lodged and stuck causing the entire engine to essentially locked, car was cold and he tried cranking it more than once I can tell you that chain and tensioner is loose and slack on cold starts especially on the Ea888 motor, and Im betting the chain has jumped or skipped teeth and is stuck between the teeth like a bycle chain gets stuck on the gears.
@@VAGZILLAR definitely on the list of suspects. Old tensioner with maybe a little less oil pressure due to the oil pressure drop? Would failure codes have been stored in the ECU with such a short event? Haven't heard too much about bad tensioners with the Mk7. It was a big big deal with the MK4 20V engine back in the day.
Usually what seizes are the balance shafts, rarely it will be the crank or camshafts. I would rebuild it, I did somewhat of a similar mistake when I used the wrong assembly lube, the rod and crank bearings got eaten up, but the crank was still in good shape, and this happened after doing a hard pull against a TTS, LOL... Replaced the balance shafts, new timing chain kit, a good cleaning, once assembled used an oil flush to clean any left over of the bad assembly lube, did about three oil changes in a span of a week, car is still running strong Stage 2 IE.
Gotcha! This is good news! Doesn’t taking the balance shafts out require removing the nut that holds the water pump belt on, for the intake side? I’m pretty sure I have that little tool for it but will need to go through a plethora of tools to find it haha. And as far as the exhaust side, regarding that plastic sleeve that sits inside with the balance shaft, did yours come out when you removed your old balance shaft? If so, I heard it’s a pain to reinstall. How did you do it? Did you have to remove the valve cover and inspect anything up top? What do you think all of that (timing chain kit, balance shafts, etc.) cost you? Glad yours was fixed and running like a bat out of hell again! 🤙
Tough blow, duder. The GTI has a Variable Valve Timing system right? I wonder if running the engine w/o oil would have caused one of those components to fail, thereby jamming the top end. M539 just did a mechanical restoration on an E60 M5 that lost all oil in an impact accident and the engine siezed. Lo and behold: the engine temporarily ran in reverse during the accident and snapped the springs for the VANOS (vvt) actuator. So even tho the engine was HOT and momentarily lost all oil pressure, it was a simple fix that brought it back to life. I know your engine did not run in reverse, but I wonder if a few hours of careful diagnosis (after a few days away from the hearbreak) might reveal an easy (or not world ending) fix. Shoot, even a hydralic cam chain tensioner might have caught in the wrong position and caused the condition. It might not be done for just yet. Chin up, thanks for sharing. onwards.
Yes, it has VVT. I don’t think that would have caused it because there’s plenty of oil in the engine. Still has perfect oil level showing in the dip stick. It is possible something happened in the timing chain area. You’re right in that it possibly could be an easy fix. My concern with it though is the cost. Just a timing chain kit for this car is ~$900. And then if it happens to be the balancers, that’s another $800, not including the cost of tools and other parts, to take it all apart and do the job the correct way. So really, it’s ~$2000 just in parts. Not crazy money but several people on my channel and in other online groups have contacted me already saying to get the Alibaba engine. Brand new long block for only $1500 + shipping. So for $2000, I could either fix my old high mileage engine, or have a brand new one with all brand new internals, timing chain components, etc. This is where I’m stuck at what to do because I love the idea of having a brand new motor in the car. And others showed me links to where many people buy these cheap Alibaba engines and use them for high go builds, and run just fine. I appreciate your comment and concern bro. Thanks for watching!
I just realized you said you forgot to put the oil filter back in and you cranked the car or tried to start it prior. Bud the issue was oil starvation. To my knowledge without the filter the oil won't circulate it'll dump it all out and the engine won't get oil. Juts rewatched your video because I felt like I didn't watch it properly the first time, and I picked that up. That was the issue bud there was no oil pressure or oil getting to the top or cam chain etc. And remember when you start any car that is the most degradating moment of any cars life is a cold start, now trying to cold start without oil would 100 percent lock it up. Really sorry it happened bro, but I thought it was the cam chain but now that I realized the oil filter not being screwed on is 100 percent the thing that caused it to lock up.
It wasn't. The engine was never starved of oil. It still has lots of oil in it. I also talked to my Uncle, a retired master mechanic, and he confirmed this wouldn't make the car seize up. Its probable something due to timing chain area. But I won't know until I remove the timing chain covers.
@@JacesOwnWorld So basically if the oil filter isn't installed there isn't enough pressure to get it up to the top end remember the oil pump and pick up works via pressure and without the filter there is none. Older cars had a bypass tube but these cars don't bud. It has to have a oil filter to have enough pressure to send oil to the top end. That's probably why the top end something has seized, the chain like I said previously could have jumped off the teeth and has gotten stuck or jammed but that would have happened due to no oil pressure. Remember your car didn't start so there was no way to know, when you started it it dumped all the oil into the floor, that was the oil that was meant to go to the head of the motor and cam chain etc. Not trying to make you feel bad at all, just it's probably why it seized up. A silly mistake but not one that others haven't made before. Its all about oil pressure and without the housing being blocked off there will be not enough pressure to send enough oil to the top end.
@@JacesOwnWorld No matter what it is bro you love that car, and it can be rebuilt it may be top end or bottom end. Regardless it can be fixed, don't lose hope. Even a bent Vavle is easily fixable, I know you don't want to open up your motor let's hope it doesn't get to that. Timing chain is a rather easy job and accessible. Good luck bro and look forward to part 2 of the investigation into what happened, maybe it's just one Vavle that got bent from the plastic from the injectors. The vavles are pretty flimsy so it's a possibility. One Vavle is all it takes to stop it from cranking, but the timing chain is my bet. Good luck brother and stay positive 😎💪
A rebuild wud be really expensive , i wud suggest to get used motor and replace it, cheaper and easy to work , + you will have extra stuff laying around frm old motor.
That's what I'm thinking too. Either a used motor with all the accessories, or a new motor where I use the accessories on my current GTI and swap them over.
Yeah that’s the plan. I just bought a new daily on Monday (I know it was fast). So now I don’t need to stress about fixing the GTI so quickly, and just focus on building it the way I want to. Thanks for watching 🤙
I am so sorry that happened dawg. How long did you crank it for tho? I have seen dumb wal-mart techs forget the filter and shut it off quickly but lower tech had a shower! Guess it don't take much for these EA888s Swap it out for an Audi 2.0 TFSI and send it.
It was literally 2-3 seconds. That’s why it’s so weird. The engine wasn’t hot to cause anything internal to break from heat. Even with the oil filter off, there was still plenty of oil in the engine (after checking the dip stick). So it wasn’t due to oil starvation. So it’s just all weird to me. I will say I’m going to try one last thing and remove the starter. A seized starter could possibly prevent the crank from turning. So I will have to remove the starter and see if the crank rotates. As far as plans on the GTI, I think I’m leaning towards buying a brand new long block for it. I was sent some info from another VW enthusiast online, where others with this gen GTI, buy a brand new long block on Alibaba for $1500!! These guys use them for high hp builds. So that’s a big possibly for the future of the GTI. Rebuilding it isn’t something I want to venture into myself, and it costs too much for a shop to do it.
That’s a possibility. I’ll most likely buy a new motor for it, transfer the accessories, and then do a tear down video on the old motor. But it won’t be for a while. Too much going on especially into the holidays.
That really sucks dude. Out of morbid curiosity, have you fully unbolted the starter to make sure the starter gear didn't stick in the flywheel and that's what's actually seized up? 17yr master tech and have only seen this a couple times but both times it bit pretty good techs in the ass. At the very least it's one last quick and easy thing to check while it's just sitting in your garage. Not sure about your car needs as far as physical size goes, but 11-14 Mazda2s are like a goddamn cockroach. Will last forever. Tracked and autocrossed the hell out of one for 8yrs and finally put it into a wall at Mid Ohio with 183k on it. A nice one can be had for under $5k. It's essentially a wrong wheel drive Miata with 4 doors and have pretty good driving dynamics. The 5spd is quite nice too. I love the GTI but I still miss that car at times.
Thanks man I appreciate it. I haven’t yet. This is the thing I’m going to check next when I get some time (it’s been a super busy week, just bought another car, and been working 12+ hour days to catch up). Really? Man, that’s crazy I actually have a master tech watching and commenting on my vid(s)! I appreciate it bro! I will def check the starter! Thanks for the heads up on the Mazda2. I don’t know much about them, but I don’t think I would be able to comfortably fit in one anyways as it’s pretty small. But I did find a car and bought it this last Monday. I’ll be posting a vid in the morning of it so look out for my vid to post. Thanks for watching and for your help 🤙
@@JacesOwnWorld yeah man it's certainly a long shot but verify all the little stuff or you'll be kicking your own ass way harder if the initial diagnostic was wrong. One of those techs I mentioned ordered a motor, put it in, all was fine for like a week (I guess removing the starter to swap to the new engine dislodged the gear?) and same thing happened again. The old engine was still on the shop floor in a corner. The look on his face when it spun over by hand was priceless 😂 Time spent diagnosing/confirming diagnostic (especially in big $$ repairs) is rarely wasted.
@@datadrivenmqb for sure! Thank you. So that tech reused the starter in an old motor because they thought it was good because it dislodged itself when they removed it? That's crazy! Glad it was found and fixed!! Crossing my fingers...
Probably the balance shaft. Ive seen someone on yt seized his engine caused by the balance shaft. He was able to fix it without replacing the engine but still is an expensive fix
Sorry for you mate 😢... It was an amazing build. Did you try to crank it counter clockwise ? You can always look with a camera inspection through the spark plugs holes and see the cylinders general condition... It didnt seize while driving.. So the damage can't be that worse ??!!
Thanks. I did try to crank it counter clockwise. I think it moved slightly, like an inch, but then wouldn’t move at all and cranking on it more actually loosed the crank bolt. Yeah, it wasn't driving, so I guess that is a good thing. It might be something lodged on the top end.
Just brain-storming here so all this might be way off... If a tooth broke off & wedged in the flywheel or starter situation... It's weird, but it happened to me before... I wonder how long you cranked with no oil going to the mains, how many revs on the starter before it stopped turning? I can't imagine you sat there cranking for a minute? I don't know for sure, but the oil is picked up, goes through the pump, then the filter before it oils anything, right? Turning for a long time with no oil on the bearings might do the damage. If your bearings were in bad shape before, they might have had just enough heat & friction to spin out of place & jam everything up.
This a big possibility. I don’t think it’s an oil issue though. Car was only sitting for 5 days and still plenty of oil in the engine. It craned maybe 6-8 times and revved for maybe 3-4 seconds before it stopped turning. Yes, I believe you are right about the oil routing. And it is a possibility the bearings broke. I will be draining the oil to check for metal shavings for sure. The car didn’t crank over long enough to even heat any internals up. I’m thinking it’s starter or timing chain area related. But I won’t know until I take it apart, which I will be doing soon and making a vid about it. Thanks for watching 🤙
@@JacesOwnWorld no sir but most us mk7 guys have heard a bit about the alibaba engines a few people are running them with stock internals and some with built internals. Good luck with the build my mk7 brother.
Maybe when you soldered the new injector in it got stuck open, flooded the cylinder, and it hydro locked it before any fuel burnt. Can you look peak in there with a borescope? A bent valve wouldn’t seize your motor. I dropped a very small metal nut in a spark plug hole long ago unknowingly and it turned over and I heard a hammering. It even ran (very poorly). It was an interference engine too. Four smashed valves and it ran for a moment before I turned it off. So I don’t think you dropping anything caused this
Yes definitely. I’ve thought of that scenario too. I don’t have a horoscope yet but I have ordered one so I can view inside the spark plug holes. Gotcha, I didn’t know that about the valves. Thank you for that info about your bent valves. That’s comforting to me. I’m sorry it happened to you though. Thanks for watching 🤙
You basically had your engine running with no oil supply during those long cranks. The fact that there was oil still in the pan does not mean you had it at the bearings. Something bearing related 100%, bottom or top end. I am surprised so many people who are knowledgeable in cars did not mention this
It’s a possibility but we will never know for certain until I take it all apart. When I do that, I should make a poll on what the guess if the damage is.
Dude that sucks. In your last video I was going to ask you how much longer you planned on keeping the GTI. Even though it sucks and you are being forced to move on. It does Sound like you are ready to.
I plan on never getting rid of the GTI, unless its value goes up so high that I can’t decline an offer. Many reasons why, but the biggest reasons are: 1. It’s such a blast to drive and to me, a perfect tuner street car. 2. It’s a manual, and with the Golf platform no longer selling with manual for the MK8.5+, and going to go EV real soon, people are going to want manuals again when EV’s are the majority. So manual cars will go up in value. Those are the biggest reasons why I’m keeping it. Thanks for watching 🤙
Yes I have. The only model that is in my price and mileage range is the LS 430. I am going to be looking at one tomorrow. The other models are way too expensive for what kind of cars they are IMO. And the IS250 isn't that reliable either from what I've read.
can you not source another engine? see if Charles (humble mechanic) can build you one for his channel...or do a tear down series with this channel... how about Deutsch Auto Parts (DAP)? FCP Euro? Who are the VW engine builders? is there a local engine shop to you?
Yes that’s an idea, but it’s not cheap to have someone rebuild it. Used engines are not as cheap as I thought either. So most likely (If I can’t have someone build me one for super cheap on their channel) I’ll be buying a long block and swapping motors eventually.
Why not check what's wrong before thinking of the worst in having to get a new engine. Start with taking the spark plugs out and look down the bores. Buy a cheap camera to inspect what is going on. Would take 15 minutes to see what is wrong with it.
Yes I will do this. I just wanted to make the video to let everyone know what’s up. I already have the spark plugs removed. Camera is on its way. Next I will be taking the starter out. It could be seized preventing the crank from turning. If not, next step is removing timing chain covers and inspecting timing as well as balancers. Balancers could have seized. I think your 15min is an overestimation haha. These steps are an easy hour, of which it’s sometimes difficult to find that time when other things are on the mind. Checking and fixing are two separate things. Even if I checked and found out the reason why the car seized, I would still be out of a car my priorities right now are: 1. Get a new car 2. Get to work 3. Get schoolwork done 4. Check things on GTI I appreciate the feedback.
Sucks that happened. Hopefully you can get things resolved quickly

I can really feel your disappointment here man, what a freakin bummer.
Thanks bro. It sucks. Good news is I got myself a new ride and now I can solely focus the GTI on being a project car and not something I have to stay running for daily activities.
Elevated Euro in Mesa (Kyle) did my walnut blast and full service man!
I'll call them for a quote. Thanks
I'm surprised it locked up that fast. I'd pull the plugs and put a boroscope down each cylinder before doing anything else.
Me too. So weird ow it happened so quickly. Yeah, I need to do that.
Hope it works out! Do make a video on how it happened when /if you can
I will for sure once I find out how it happened
I'm sorry brother 😢I know that shitty feeling!
It sucks!!
@VAGZILLAR gotcha. Well damn. Let’s hope it’s the timing chain then because that’s something I could do myself and would cost the cheapest!!
I second getting a used working motor. So many things can go wrong with a rebuild.
Sorry for the loss. I will keep the car and fix it. Perhaps put it on the back burner for now. Until you gather some money and have a new daily car.
Yeah that’s the plan. I just bought a new daily on Monday (I know it was fast). So now I don’t need to stress about fixing the GTI so quickly, and just focus on building it the way I want to. Thanks for watching 🤙
How much work would it be to retime the engine and then check compression?
Honestly, not that much work. But it will cost quite a bit, especially if the balance shafts are seized. That’s the issue for me.
I am so sorry that happened dawg.
How long did you crank it for tho?
I have seen dumb wal-mart techs forget the filter and shut it off quickly but lower tech had a shower!
Guess it don't take much for these EA888s
Swap it out for an Audi 2.0 TFSI and send it.
Full teardown video coming soon? lol?
@@JacesOwnWorld yeah. Poke around and see what's up. Maybe there's hope. Even if it's slim lol
The look on his face when it spun over by hand was priceless 😂
Time spent diagnosing/confirming diagnostic (especially in big $$ repairs) is rarely wasted.
@@datadrivenmqb for sure! Thank you.
So that tech reused the starter in an old motor because they thought it was good because it dislodged itself when they removed it? That's crazy! Glad it was found and fixed!! Crossing my fingers...
@@JacesOwnWorld that's what I believe happened. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.
Probably the balance shaft. Ive seen someone on yt seized his engine caused by the balance shaft. He was able to fix it without replacing the engine but still is an expensive fix
Great to know. Thanks for the info bud
@@JacesOwnWorld any failure codes generated by the event?
Alibaba engine time
Absolutely! Are you the one that messaged me on Facebook?
@@JacesOwnWorld no sir but most us mk7 guys have heard a bit about the alibaba engines a few people are running them with stock internals and some with built internals. Good luck with the build my mk7 brother.
@SEROFTP I knew Alibaba made engines but I was unaware people were actually using them. Good to know
Big bummer. Once you recover and save up enough you can install a new engine and then that one will be back on the road for yourself or someone else.
Absolutely!! That’s the plan!! GTI content will continue. Thanks for watching 🤙
@ 4 sure. It would be a very interesting video
Don’t give up, it’s only an engine. Sucks ofc but there must be a way to solve it all and at least not to take a capital loss:)
@tonyd9 yeah I hear ya. It will be reborn at some point. Money is tight right now though. But I already miss driving the GTI haha.
Many reasons why, but the biggest reasons are:
Have you looked into sc300? Gs300 or ls430 maybe even is300 or is250 those will also get views brother!...I just hate to see a fellow AZ dude down 😢
Even if I checked and found out the reason why the car seized, I would still be out of a car my priorities right now are:
1. Get a new car
2. Get to work
3. Get schoolwork done
4. Check things on GTI
I appreciate the feedback.
