Sometimes we forget how great the things we have are. We forget because certain things become “normal” and we don’t have anything else to base our feelings off of. If you are a car enthusiast, in this video I explain how I realized how great my personal MK7 GTI is. But it only after I realized what I lost.

My names Jace and I’ve got a mk7 aswell 🤯
Haha cool
Hi Jace! It's December '24 and this started happening last week to my 2015 GTI that has 79.5k miles. My husband told me to keep filling up the reservoir with coolant until I can get it into the VW dealership for repair in a few days. I really appreciate this video and your helping me understand what's going on with my car as well as anticipating a ballpark range for what the car repair could potentially cost. Thanks so much for making this video and helping people like me who know nothing about repairs. I learned something today!
You’re welcome! Glad I could help a little bit. Yes, keep the coolant reservoir filled. Your husband is right. 🤙
How much did the motor set you back? 🤑
I haven’t bought it yet, but it’s looking like with the motor + shipping + all other tools/gaskets/fluids/parts, it’s going to be about $5500-6300. It all depends on what deals I can find. So, it’s not cheap. But, it’s a lot less than a shop rebuild and/or other car motors. I’ll have an awesome GTI that should last a very long time.
Just did this today and wanna say thank you for this video it helped me a ton! Also for anyone going to do it I tried everything and ended up having to take the bolts out of the alternator out just to get the ground. I still have the headlight flickering with my 1200 watt rms amp so thinking maybe my alternator is getting weak. Heard a lot of bad things about the power bastards so unsure on whether to just bite the bullet or maybe see if the 180amp golf r will bolt right up. Either way thanks for all the detailed videos that nobody else is covering. Hope you get yours back on the road soon!
You’re welcome! Glad my video helped you out! Yeah, you need to remove the alternator to get to the bolt in the back of it. I too was a little reluctant of Power Bastards, but all of the bad reviews I read of them were from years ago. So I gave them a shot and the alternator worked just fine. The Golf R alternator should be a direct bolt on.
Thanks for this video bro very informative
I appreciate you watching!
My clutch did the same thing, but no leaks and my fluids are all at level. I pumped the pedal a bit and got a little but if pressure and was able to drive it. Bleed the line and now its driving fine. Any ideas?
Your tob/slave could possibly be on its way out. Either that or your master cylinder could also be on its way out. Hard to really tell unless something failed.
Yes they will cost £1000 plus labour 😜😜
I was in your position a year ago. I ended up getting a used motor. The reason why the mk7 gti is more expensive than the mk7.5 gti is because of the sai that's required for the 15-17 gti for emissions. You can do a full swap of the 7.5 just make sure you use the ecu from the newer motor. The used mk7 gti motors are not worth the price vs mileage. The cheapest one i found was like 5k with like 90k miles. You can swap a 2.0t ea888 from an 19+ atlas that is literally a direct sawp without messing with timing or tuning for way less with way less miles. All the specs are the same as the mk7 gti just without the sai. You can also use the stock ecu from the mk7 you'll just have to tune out the sai and make sure you code out the cel for the sai codes.
Wow, I didn’t know that. So the MK7.5 GTI’s don’t come with SAI? That doesn’t bother me anyways because I deleted my SAI in my MK7 GTI a while ago. I had my tuner tune it out too. So I wouldn’t need a MK7.5 ECU. I could just reuse my MK7 ECU because it’s all tuned out already. Oh dang, I didn’t know the 2019+ Atlas used the same motor too. I’ll look that up. Thanks! And yeah, the used motors are expensive for MK7’s! Too expensive for my taste.
@JacesOwnWorld yeah i done a ton of research on the motor spec before i made the decision to try it. No one has done it before, so i can tell you that its doable cause i did it. I took the time and money to try it. The only difference that i ran into when doing the swap was the sai and you need to put in a pilot bearing for the dsg trans cause the atlas cones with the 8 speed auto trans. The atlas motors do have a bit more hp i think it was 235 instead of the 220 so with the is38 would probably work better with this motor.
If you want the spec, i can send it to you so you can see for yourself.
Mine is 6spd manual, so would I need to worry about the pilot bearing? Also, once the engine is tuned, the stock power becomes irrelevant. An IS38 Golf R motor would output the same as an IS38 on the GTI motor. They’re the same motor with a few bits that are different inside. But those bits don’t contribute to the power potential of the motor.
Yeah, send me the spec please
100% used motor. I think spending more upfront will likely save more money in the long run.
Thanks for your input bud
Congrats on new car it's better have a daily and fix up ggi I do the same thing I got the f150 Ecoboost, look forward to build
Thanks bud! F150 Ecoboosts are sweet!
The dealer currently has mine over the recall. My gas hand doesnt work its stuck on half empty most days..is there a correaltion with this and the recall? I would assume there is because my gas hand started having issues as soon as the suction pump did.
Yes. This part should fix that
I had a whole ordeal about 2/3 years ago regarding that part which is finally being recalled. My GTI started refusing fuel and would leak out the back a little. My car had about 53k miles and was still under warranty so they fixed it. It was a headache though, it took two trips and a month to get it fixed. In hindsight, I think you’re right about Volkswagen not wanting to fix the part under warranty unless it has failed. Except mine had failed already and I told them that’d I read online about the car having this part fail in previous years. The 2015-2016’s were recalled for the same thing. I was always worried that it would fail again, so I took it to get fixed again for the recall. I’m at 92K miles now, so 🤞
I don’t understand why VW would hate fixing this issue to the point of not allowing owners to get it replaced unless it failed already. It’s such an easy job. As fast as an oil change. I was just turned off on the fact that I made an appt and then when I came in for that appt, they said they would need my car for a few days. That turned me off big time. I’ve never had this happen with any other brand I’ve owned after making an appt. It’s just bad customer service all around, and this kind of service from VW even happened before COVID too. The only good service I’ve had with VW was when I had my IS20 turbo blow near Reno, NV while traveling to Tahoe from SLC, UT, for a family reunion. Turbo blew, had a tow truck pick the car up and tow it to local VW dealer in Reno, NV. I immediately had a service guy come out when I showed up on the tow truck. He looked it over, took it in immediately, checked it out, ran codes, and said it needed a new turbo and they could have it fixed the next day! If that dealership could fix that big of a job in a days time, why does my local dealer say they would need my car for a few days for a job that would take less than an hour??? So ridiculous
Sucks to hear about your experiences. For every SBC S3 failure video I can find one for Sachs performance clutch it seems. I've seen less SBC S2 Daily fail videos vs S3 for some reason, but it really seems like a crap shoot.
It’s true. I’ve seen more forum posts of the SB S3’s failing over the S2’s. But really, it’s not the actual clutch that fails. It’s the ton/slave that fails almost every single time. But because SB includes them in their kits, I have to put the blame on SB.
Hi there, when I choose IDE00396 mine shows a % not a Volts, any ideas please? Thanks
I don’t know what’s going on with that. It should show volts not %
For the sake of the Turbo waiting 10 K to change your your oil seems to me to be a real risky policy ?
You can call it risky, but I know a lot more others who had turbo’s fail even with 3-5k oil changes. The point is there is no data to prove your questions claim. My IS38 has been custom tuned its entire life of over 130k miles, and zero issues with my choice of oil intervals.
I just had my call done for this on my 2019 VW sportswagon and the smell of gas is very strong in the car. We took it back and they said that everything looks good and that there was no leaks etc. what should I do?
Should I take it back in?
I would take it back for sure and make sure they smell the gas leak. What part of the car is the gas leak coming from? Rear (by fuel pump), vents, engine bay, fill up tube, etc.? Figure that out so that when you take it back, you can let them know so they can try to pinpoint it.
Fuuarkk, that sounds tuff. Transforms the car completely!
It was a worthy upgrade for sure
@ to be able to master Tig welding and being able to make custom exhausts/manifolds/downpipes would be the dream 👨🏭👨🔧
So out of all the clutches brands that you had in the past, which one would you say is the best so far?
Sachs Performance w/DMF by far. Best pedal modulation, holds IS38 on WMI just fine, most reliable.
Ive been looking for a alt and planning a big 3 for my system so ur video helped me out alot!! Thank ya buddy

The price in the video was USA pricing, which is pretty absurd pricing in the USA. But some have said it might have been an “April Fools” joke. Not sure though.

That's what you get for talking shit about DSG gti's and DSG R's and mk8's on so many other videos. I've seen you in so many comments bitching and whining about cars that are superior to yours. Let this be a lesson to humble yourself kid. 🤡
Are you considering making the switch to AWD MQB? Sold my IS38 GTI for a 8V.5 A3 and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made, couldn’t go back to FWD
Maybe in the future, but not right now. I love the setup on my GTI regarding suspension, brakes, 6spd, clutch, etc. I would love AWD, but if I went that route, I would have to mod all the suspension and things again, which I don’t want to do. Personally, if I was going to go AWD, it would be a BMW G80 M3 Competition. Being able to switch between AWD and RWD on the fly is pretty awesome.
Huge Win! Bigly!
Omg dude i have the same exact leak how bad was the job when replacing the hardline? Did just the hardline need replacing or the brass fitting as well?
It was super easy. But to replace the brass fitting on the fuel rail, you will most likely need to remove the intake manifold to access it. So it’s a bigger job doing this. But replacing the brass line was very easy. Socket took it off easily. It’s not that tight.
@JacesOwnWorld is there anyway I can replace the fuel line without taking the manifold off? I'm trying to sell my car and I don't wanna mess anything else up
Yes. You don’t have to take the manifold off to replace the fuel line. Just unscrew off and screw on
@@JacesOwnWorld probably easy for you, you wrench on your own car like everyday😭idk how you do it I enjoy wrenching on my car but I find it very stressful so I end up not enjoying it idk if that makes sense I'm gonna struggle with this one 😂

MAGA Nation has finally turned out!! It really makes me question the past 2020 Presidential election and 2022 mid-term election. Seeing how red the country is now and how blue it was just a 2-4 years ago makes me question the election process in 2020 and 2022…🤔 Oh well. We are back and let’s hope Trump can get things done. With his new staff, the Senate, and House of Representatives behind him, and not all this bull crap impeachment waste of time nonsense, I think things are going to take a massive turn for the better here really soon!
@JacesOwnWorld for sure the math dont add up but hey we back brother
@@JacesOwnWorld agreed. Too bad the far left doesn't want you to think that way. Oh well, the majority has spoken!!
@roymartinez25 hell’ yes!
@gravygrizz833 that’s right! The left will always remain…well we all know…
This reminds me of the time my GTI was rear-ended. While my GTI was in the shop, I was given a Ford Mustang Ecoboost as a rental car for a month. I missed my GTI so much. Driving the Mustang felt like a boat compared to the GTI. I missed the tight handling, DCC suspension, and, of course, the stage 2 power. The interior quality is so much better in the GTI than the mustang (My uncle would be upset since he's the one who designed the seats lol). The mustang only had 1k miles on it and it was rattling. My GTI is quiet and comfortable. The Interior reminds me of an Audi. Then VW made the MK8 look cheap. I feel like the MK7-7.5 is the last good generation.
This is what I was talking about you know. It’s perspective. Love Mustangs, but they really are boats in comparison. The MK7/7.5 interior is so dang good! Ergonomically perfect in my eyes for a street car. It has all the creature comforts you need without being overcomplicated for no reason, like the MK8’s are. I think the MK8 is a better performer and doesn’t need as many mods to make it great, but the MK7/7.5’s really are almost perfect. I say almost because I do think they’re quite boring stock and need quite a bit of mods to make it really good.
@@JacesOwnWorld Agree. I bought the MK7 GTI not knowing the modding potential of this platform. I was actually perfectly content with keeping it stock. That was until I saw how easy it was to go to stage 1. Then after that I wanted more power and better handling. I am full bolt ons now stage 2 Flex Fuel. Now I'm on the fence about going stage 3 or just keeping it how it is and enjoying it. I plan to take it to the track for the first time next year. I'll be taking an intro to Track Driving class here in Tampa and I can't wait to see how the GTI does on the track.
Awesome! Sounds like your GTI is a blast to drive. Haha, that’s how the modding bug begins. Simple Stage 1 tune, and then all of a sudden, FBO, Stage 3,4,5…lol. Honestly, I’m pretty content with the power level of the IS38. My GTI was custom tuned on WMI. It was pretty quick, even on its 87oct tune (I never got to the 91oct WMI tune unfortunately)(that would have added another 30-40whp). The IS38 spools fast and is great for daily driving, but very quick when tuned, epically w/custom tune and WMI or ethanol. Hybrid turbos don’t spool as quick, so the car suffers on the daily driving aspect. As far as handling, the Koni dampers/struts, EMD lowering springs, 034 Motorsport RSB, and light OZ Utralegerra HLT wheels with sticky tires, made the car handle incredibly well, which really woke the car up in that aspect. Do you have any suspension, tires, and brake mods? I highly recommend all three done so it’s ready for when you track it. That sounds fun! I think you’ll have a blast on track in the GTI and that driving class sounds sweet!
@@JacesOwnWorld Yes, so at first, I was focusing on performance mods, but now I'm working on upgrading the handling. I have a front strut brace, Bilstein B6 DCC struts with Racingline lowering springs, upgraded strut mounts with stiffer rubber busings, Michelin Pilot Sport 4s with Racingline R360 Wheels, Superpro rear swaybar and end links, Superpro front lower control arms with added caster. I also have upgraded motor mounts and dogbone mounts from BFI. I am planning to get Superpro front swaybar and adjustable endlinks. I just have to drop the front subframe again. I'm just regretting doing it since it was a pain. The first time I did it was for the deadset kit. Also, my GTI has the performance pack with the Golf R brakes. Unsure if I want to upgrade them or not. I do have EBC redstuff pads which are good for the street but unsure how they will work on the track. also since this car is my daily, not sure If I want race pads on it. but overall the car rides like its on rails while still being comfortable as a daily driver. I think the DCC system helps a lot when its in comfort mode. In sport mode, I feel every bump but the car is planted and has no body roll. I am debating on the IS38 or the garrett powermax gt2260s. I do have the MK8 PCV retrofit done and it needs boost pressure to work properly. I would also need to upgrade the charge pipes but I heard its not worth it. But I need the WMI test port to properly connect the MK8 PCV. Right now I have the 034 turbo muffler delete with the test port. But its not comaptabile with the GT2260s. But since this car is a OEM+ build I might go IS38.
Sorry if you touched on this later in the video.. as i'm only 5 mins in and wanting to comment... I do hear you and I too have an MK7... well 7.5 to be exact--which is in fact the last of the real GTI's in my opinion... I digress. But do you think--and this is what i'm toying with--do you think we should just drive the GTI's for what they are and stop modifying them to the point of.. well in your case, a seized engine, aka no return. I keep toying with turning my car and stepping up to an is38 turbo... but then I think, shit, I love how this stock engine runs and can keep up with plenty of cars on the road, etc... are we pushing these GTIs too far and causing these issues? I only ask because I'm torn myself on wanting to mod... but then again I don't want to end up with a Ford LOL... sorry :P
lol, that’s a good question. My answer to this is you can’t say that tuning and modding the car resulted its engine seizing. It had 184k miles on it bud. There are lots of MK7/7.5 owners out there who have blown their tuned motors before 100k miles, many have had their engines fail with their GTI’s stock, and many who have well over 200k miles and still going strong stock and tuned. So you can’t really point a finger at anything and rush to make judgements when the data doesn’t support what you are insinuating in your question. As far as tuning. It’s all individual. I personally bought the MK7 GTI solely knowing its tuning potential. That’s why I bought it. The car stock is very boring to me. But that’s only because my perspective is different, coming from a mid-500hp E46 M3. So jumping into a stock MK7 GTI felt very very slow and mundane in comparison. But that might not be the case for you or anyone else. The great thing about owning our own stuff is we can choose to do whatever we want with it. Keep it stock or mod. Yes, I never saw myself in a Ford, but as far as deals are concerned in todays world, there wasn’t a better deal to be had in the price I bought this car for. And I bought it because, well, I needed a car asap, but mostly because it was a very practical daily. So though it’s a Ford, it’s still great for the purpose I bought it for. What other 40+ mpg vehicle with 20k miles and an unlimited powertrain lifetime warranty will you be able to find for $13.5k? There aren’t any… And es, the MK7.5 is the last of the real GTI’s, I agree. The MK8.5 is promising, but it doesn’t come with 6spd manual 😢.
@@JacesOwnWorld I didn't mean to insinuate your mods or modding your car was the reason for the result you're in. I was only trying to see both sides--as stated, i'm still torn on doing more mods on mine... But we all know that only promotes heavier/harder driving. Sure a stock car can still end in the same results. Anyway, just disregard my comments then... was just thinking out loud... and still sorry to hear about your GTI. They really are a pleasure to drive! 👍
@saakey I didn’t take your comment as anything bad. You spoke your mind and I appreciate it. No feelings were hurt her bro. What mods do you currently have on it? I’ve been through the wringer with this car and have learned a lot of thongs along the way, especially when it comes to mods. Not all mods are good for the car, but not all are bad either.
@@JacesOwnWorld Okay good good... Yeah man... just fyi, been following you're channel for quite some time now--may have commented on a few vids of yours... but anywho, other than lowering springs and a few airbox mods, and a sweet downpipe sitting in my basement, I really don't have much in the way of mods. I still want to turbo upgrade--is38 and apr tune, but not sure if it's a good idea. I know the turbo uprade shouldn't be a big deal--as it's the same turbo on the R's.. so engine should handle it... but then I want to tune it with APR stuff--can't go wrong with APR... but I'm sort of waiting until my clutch goes then change it all at once.. only have 45k on my 2018 mk7.5... Anywho, sorry to hear about your GTI... hope it all works out with it! here's my car anyway..if you care - I love it... it's been a great car so far instagram.com/p/Czi8e78uHbbs1HQ_OLZWShgd_Ic3BN0dpTVIuI0/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Look forward to seeing the gti come back to life ♥️
Don’t give up on it! What is going on with your car again? $1300 is crazy for new HPFP. I paid $230 for mine. Why was yours so expensive?
I had no issues with my local dealer. They replaced the part in 2 hrs. While I waited. BTW they don't remove the gas tank. Access is under the back seat cushion.
Sweet. I’m glad you got it done quickly.
shoulda went subie impreza route
Naw. Bad mpg’s and too unreliable
@@JacesOwnWorld my 2017 gets like 37
@isaacwright33 not in the city. I’m getting 43-45mpg city/38-40hwy. 90% of my driving is in the city. Also too unreliable. Also don’t want AWD for my daily. I appreciate it though
Man, this is a real bummer. Good luck with everything man.
Thanks. Big things to come 🤙
I think your reasoning is sound. Find a good used lower mileage engine.
Thanks
You can throw a newer a4/a5/q5/atlas/arteon engine you just need to swap oil pans and move a few freeze plugs, gen 3 or 4 work You can likely find a gti motor for cheaper or the same cost, but this gives you quite a few more options on the market. I built my rod/piston a3 motor from a 20k mile 2021 q5 core The a5 had no sai and the same aluminum alloy as the R cylinder head
Atlas will have all your correct accessories and oil pans
Right on bro! Thanks for the info! Having more options to choose from will definitely be better when searching for the right engine at the right price. Thanks!
Would this be the same procedure for a Golf R Mk7? Thanks for the video by the way very informative 😁👍
It should be because I have the IS38 in my GTI, and this wastegate in the video is the wastegate used for the IS38.
Do you have oil in your coolant too? I changed the oil cooler with a new oil cooler gasket and new oil filter housing gasket and it fixed the problem in my coolant. I was worried about coolant getting into oil so I did change the oil immediately to a garage at the time it happen. I can not say if any coolant was mix with the oil. The car drive fine since. I hope you can fix your problem, I really like your channel it helps me to work on my golf. Cheers!
I do not. It’s a high possibility that the coolant in the oil is due to the oil cooler. I’ve watched several EA888 motor videos where this was the cause, just like it was for you. I still have the problem of the motor being seized though. I’m just very skeptical about the motors longevity factor even if I did rebuild it. It will definitely get fixed and the GTI will live again. Thanks for watching my videos.
@@JacesOwnWorld *yes, that is correct. When I rebuilt mine I swapped all those oil and transmission cooler gaskets. Although I seriously do not think the engine block is cracked. Of course (and I would) take the block for dye testing. The fuel in the oil could be defective injectors, you can test them out with a 9v battery and connect them, there are videos on doing diy tests on them. On mine as well, one of the injectors was staying stuck open, and you will know as one of the pistons will look shinier and with more carbon deposits compared to the other chambers, pistons. A machine shop will tell you if the engine block and crankshaft is within specs, and it does not cost that much. I have two spare used blocks, got them through FB marketplace, took them to a machine shop, visually the builder told me right away they are good, that's how good my machinist is. I know it is overwhelming, but don't just say is an old motor, the machinist will tell you if it is or not. These blocks are almost bullet proof, one has to be real silly to kill them. Thanks for sharing your mishap and thoughts!
I understand what you’re saying. When I say it’s an “old motor”, what I’m really trying to say is all of those things you mentioned take work, time, and $$. I want to get the car up and running the fastest and least cost as possible, with reliability in mind too. Maybe further down the road I will take these steps to Dx if the engine block is good or not. What I will for sure be doing is taking the engine apart to see what went wrong. For right now though, I really am looking for a used engine, with compression and leak tests performed, with under 60k miles on it, and just do a straight swap. Once I have the car running again, I can make more content and then dive into my seized motor.
@@JacesOwnWorldIt was a first for me with the ea888, so it took me two months to fix it, waiting for the shop, parts, funds, and finding the time and energy to work on it. At least you have a DD, which is a good move whenever having a modded car.
@lmmaccount1232 yeah I hear ya. I actually just bought this daily less than two weeks ago due to my GTI’s engine seizing. So yeah, it is very nice having this daily car now. Now I can focus on the GTI as a true project/fun car. I have a lot of plans for it. New (used) engine, new accessories, new FMIC, possible new turbo, possible new tuning platform, wavetrack LSD…to name a few. I wouldn’t be able to take my time and do it the way I want if I didn’t have a second vehicle right now. So it’s good.
You basically had your engine running with no oil supply during those long cranks. The fact that there was oil still in the pan does not mean you had it at the bearings. Something bearing related 100%, bottom or top end. I am surprised so many people who are knowledgeable in cars did not mention this
It’s a possibility but we will never know for certain until I take it all apart. When I do that, I should make a poll on what the guess if the damage is.
@ 4 sure. It would be a very interesting video
Don’t give up, it’s only an engine. Sucks ofc but there must be a way to solve it all and at least not to take a capital loss:)
@tonyd9 yeah I hear ya. It will be reborn at some point. Money is tight right now though. But I already miss driving the GTI haha.
Too bad that wasn't it - but still good to rule out. Looking forward to seeing what you find!
I found something huge! Video will post on Friday
Simple to test. good idea. Too bad it wasn't the problem. Will keep watching.
I found the problem. Video will post on Friday. Look out for it 🤙
@@JacesOwnWorldI'll be ready!!! Hopefully it's nothing too bad to fix.
My 2016 GTI hiccups at idle. Confirmed its due to the evap purge. Issue goes away when I unplug purge valve. Did you change out the filter and that resolved it? Or replace the charcoal canister?
Mine also went away when I unplugged the purge valve. I never changed the filter out. I I’d replace this entire system with a used one but it never resolved it. I’m thinking the used one was also faulty. My GTI’s motor is toast now, but I wanted to make this video for those having this issue in hopes they didn’t know anything about this.
Get your purge valve replaced as well as your suction pump if you haven’t gotten the recalled part taken care of yet! Just had this done and so far has fixed my problem! Also look into replacing the charcoal canister as well if you see fuel saturation!
@@OHNOES131 I had my suction jet replaced recently, and I still have the same issue. I've been avoiding buying a new charcoal canistar. I did inspect it and it didn't feel like any fuel was inside it. Purge valve seems to be working fine. I tested it from OBD11.
@@JacesOwnWorld I see, thanks for the update!
@ hmm interesting. How’s your PCV unit itself? That’d be my only other guess EVAP-wise. After that I’d probably start going into the fueling system itself, injectors, etc.
Dude no way. My brother has a 1971 VW Super Beetle, guess what's behind the rear passenger wheel/fender.
Haha!! Hope this vid helps a little bit
