    I do love this design, personally would have preferred this as the hero ship; there's a certain charm to having an older less advanced ship as the lead too.

    I really liked the bridge being under the saucer. I do feel that it looks somewhat different from other classes of the era when you look at it a bit closer, I'm guessing since it had such an importantt role they worked on it quite a lot more.

    I like the history you added to this class. The walker class was nice to see on Discovery. I have a hard time not seeing the Normandy SR2 from Mass Effect in the smooth central dorsal section but it does make the walker class look very sleek.

    Well done. I always enjoy your take on these less fleshed out starships.
    In my head-cannon, the Walker class was different enough to be a civilian design (think of all the commercial tech derived from military or NASA stuff). It would have been designed to escort freighters after the success of the NX class, but it during the Romulan War many of them would have been pressed into Starfleet. After the war, some like the Shenzhou would remain part of Starfleet.

    They had the right idea with the bridge being more protected. Something I have never understood with most starfleet ships is putting the bridge on the top and very exposed. Overall like the walker probably one of my favorite disco designs.

      You have to remember that they are explorers first and foremost. Tactical layouts we're extremely few and far between.

    • @DeathBYDesign666
      @DeathBYDesign666 2 роки тому +2

      I'm not sure it really counts as being more protected than on the top with it still being on the outside. It should still be just as easy a target technically. The only advantage that I can think of is that it would have a better field of visibility for atmospheric flight.

    The Walker class still held a lot of promises to remain in the fight. They upgraded and retrofitted other classes to keep them current. They could easily have swapped out the antiquated systems and added additional power supplies/ relays for more efficient and effective offensive/ defensive systems.

    I kinda like to think the history you give in these vids are canon for me anyway and gives more insite
    Be cool to think someone goes to a scrap yard and finds an old ship and takes it to rebuild and use even if it’s outdated or not perfect like a trader using one of these for freight or something to make a living

    • @earlware4322
      @earlware4322 2 роки тому

      I've often wondered about that myself, pulling ships (or the hulls at least) out of the scrapyards and rebuilding them for "civilian" use. While we don't see it too often in Trek, I seem to remember a few episodes were a trader had a retro-fitted alien freighter as their vessel. Why not do so with a Starfleet vessel??
      Of course, the cost would be quite large to basically rebuild a starship from the inside out to make it seem unreasonable. Surely there are a number of ships that are liated as MIA/presumed destroyed over the years from spatial and temporal anomalies...🤔
      (For a Kelvin reference, didn't Kirk find one in that last film that was a couple hundred years old, but still basically servicable???)

    Hello Triangulum
    The Walker Class is not a bad ship. For it's time it worked well and hard, and was kept in service for over 50 years. Not too shabby for a 'Light' Cruiser. My only real experience with the Class was during a campaign for a Star Trek role playing group. My character obtained a Walker from a scrap yard, and over time, completely field stripped the ship. The ship was already mostly stripped for parts, so completing the deconstruction was easier and faster than trying to patch new systems into older systems. I was 'forced' to use the Walker, since no other ship in the yard was nearly as complete, and those other vessels provided me with most of the components I needed to upgrade the Walker. The entire group just laughed at my efforts, until I finished and ended up with a ship that was much faster and far more maneuverable than their own. On top of this, I replaced most of the shuttle craft with much smaller un-manned drone fighters, and add a pair of stealth mine launchers to the aft section, just to the outsides of the pair of Impulse Engines. This allowed me to freely maneuver at high speeds and lay mines across a foe's path that they had little or no time to detect, not to mention avoid successfully. Add in extremely fast drone fighters, and you have almost NO chance to avoid the mines at all. Later on, I upgraded the general purpose mines to a type of 'bomb pumped laser' mine. One that would de-cloak and fire at point blank range, channeling most of the energy of a 150 to 200 megaton nuclear explosion to create an extremely powerful X-Ray Laser beam that could easily overload most ship's shields and cause massive damage to hulls due to the kinetic transfer of energy from the beam to the hull. So, even though a 'beam' weapon, it's effects were pretty much explosive in nature. Years and years later, I found that the Author David Weber was using said weapons in his 'Honor Harrington' novels, although the bombs pumping the laser beams were lighter. Eventually my ship was hunted down by a massive fleet and destroyed... or so they thought... I had built an exact replica that barely functioned that they could destroy, and left the Quadrant to explore far beyond Federation Space.

    thank you for showing this class of ship its really an awesome ship i like the fact that the bridge is on deck 7 persionally i always thought it a better idea to put the bridge under the ship or deep inside the ship rather then on top like a bullseye saying "SHOOT ME HERE" just saying. again thank you for another awesome episode =)

      @flowrebaz6189 2 роки тому +2

      You realize that without shields, photon torpedos and phase/repulsor weapons of the era cut through the hull like butter? The placement of the bridge makes little to no difference

    • @CZ350tuner
      @CZ350tuner 2 роки тому +1

      In an era when phasers & disrupters have the power to blow a hole completely through any starship without functioning shields, having the bridge deep within the hull is pointless.

    Wohoo, fantastic one of my favourite ships from the Discovery era (2250's at least)
    And on my birthday too, so thats a present in itself, ha ha.
    The Walker class is a beautiful design and in STO i still use the basic version as long as possible, even now I use it in TFO's and it holds up well, giving out as much punishment as it can take as well, thats before the t6 version from the Lobi store ( don't have the Shenzhou class but have the georgiou parts and for th elife of me I forgot how you got the Georgiou skin in the game it was that long ago)
    The ship design is unique, the only ship as far as I know in canon to have the bridge on the underside of the saucer - what we see on screen anyway, the others all tend to be in the sort of traditional place on top of the saucer, and even though by the time of the Battle of the Binary Stars the class is considered old, it is still a noteworthy class.
    The Shenzhou itself I liked when I first saw it, its design looks compact I really couldnt find very many negative things to say about the class and then we get introduced to one of my favourite Discovery characters, Captain Georgiou, now she would be a commanding officer I would be honoured to serve under, in many ways with her personality she reminded me so much of Captain Picard, it was TNG that brought me to trek in the first place back in the day and she reminded me of him, from music playing in the ready room, her diplomatic approach with everything, it was very reminiscent of a future generation of Starfleet captains, and I was gutted what happened with the prime character, but when I see her character now I always have the terran empire music from Discovery play because that was awesome with what they did with her terran counterpart in season 1.
    The Walker though a fantastic ship did its bit for Starfleet and even though it may have been used solely for courier duty and such before they were all decomissioned and scrapped - a horrid thing to imagine, I would hope there is at least one in the fleet museum somewhere - it has a small experience of Miranda class later on, not use for much other than lugging about cargo and defence duties, but the Miranda's are still in service despite their survivability ratings being low in a war - see Dominion wars if you dont get that, ha ha
    At 4:05 I know Pike is standing on two different steps but it looked so much like the Riker move there.
    I also liked the little bit on the STO site at the time about the walker class being put back into service for the Klingon war, and honestly I may not say alot of positive things about STO and how it is run and such but as soon as I heard and saw the Walker class being a playavble ship that scaled with you as you went - the first I think at the time before the t6 ships became such a thing to be released to do so as well after the tutorial, I was like yes, I can get on board with that and it is the best ship to have in the game - granted you may need to tweek the weapons systems and consoles but man its a good ship with nothing locked on it either you get literally a fully unlocked t4 ship after the tutorial since i hate the phut phut phasers of the era, I swap them with the phasers from the t1 Constitution class.
    The article mentions that the Walker itself entered actual service in 2221 though was soon a class out of date with the advancements in propulsion and duotronics, and that refitting that particular design then would be difficult (so I am going to assume here that the more modern advancements were put into the ships still in the construction phase as well as of course newer ships being built of other classes)
    Before the Klingon war there were still a small number of Walker class ships in service so the Walker had the registry according to STO as 1202 and he Shenzhou was 1227 so the Shenzhou was sort of approaching a nice long service history depending on the ships actual construction year and that will have been kitted out what was advanced at the time including the transporters which were by the time of Discovery were being phased out for the new transporters, though in Enterprise those transporters used the more traditional transporter systems so it seems that it looked like a step back with what the Walker class had, if that makes any sense.
    New minds new ideas and integreating technoogies from different species there will always be some experimentation before a standardised efficient system I guess.
    Now I am getting my infor from STO here so dont bite my head off, ha ha but because of th war as stated above the decomissioned Walker class ships were at the end of a list of ships that could be reactivated in a sort of short notice and although they knew the technology was outdated the class could be used for escort, patrol or courier duties - this was the STO explanation on why the Walker class was making a comeback in the game I guess especially for the Discovery era, backed by VA Katrina Cornwell who directed the Bureau of Personnel to begin standing up crews to man this class of ship, preferring to use junior officers who are ready for their first command.
    The article itself is brief but worth a read and I don't do it justice here.
    Thankyou for the video sir, one of the two classes of ships I love from the 2250's.
    As always I enjoy your take on the canon of a class of ship.
    Peace and Long Life
