One other thing to consider about why some people may have considered the Galaxy project a failure... at the time it was designed, the Galaxy class was intended to be the dominant, most advanced ship ever built by the Federation... yet 3 or 4 of them were destroyed within a decade of the time they were launched. Now, in reality, this simply happened because the writers of various TNG and DS9 episodes deemed it necessary to destroy some ships for dramatic purposes, not because the writing staff had any predetermined notion that Galaxy class ships had some inherent flaw. But if viewed in universe, it's understandable that some people in Starfleet and in the Federation might see it that way... that if almost half the ships of this incredibly powerful new class had been destroyed in just a handful of years, was there something fundamentally wrong with the class, or with the underlying technology on which it was based? And then of course, with the first Borg incursion happening just 5 years after the Galaxy class launched, followed soon after by the increasing threat of the Dominion, it's understandable that the Galaxy class and other designs based on that shared pool of technology soon gave way to designs like the Sovereign class, which were built with more of a battleship mindset, didn't have families aboard, etc. Also, newer designs like the Sovereign and Intrepid classes had a sleeker, narrower primary hull with a lower profile, as opposed to the tall neck and broad saucer section of the Galaxy class. These features were not only preferable in a combat situation, as there would be less frontal surface area for an enemy vessel to target, but this kind of design also, it seems, helped with the issue of the subspace damage that warp travel was apparently causing to the fabric of subspace, as discovered in the season 7 TNG episode "Force Of Nature". And hey, great video overall... looking forward to the next one! 😀

Great story as always. In my head cannon a brilliant captain, Captain ScottyB, realizing that Starfleet needs warships quickly brings the great idea for the Galaxy hulls to Starfleet. With all the space for people and families not necessary it's decided to strip those areas completely out and begin installing more armament : more phasers, more torpedo launching capability. Shuttle bays filled with fighters and pop up phaser Gatling guns, a extra warp core to power all the guns and phasers. Hull seperation removed to save weight for all the extra torpedoes and fighters. Pure warships that can be manned by minimal crews. This fleet would be staged near Earth with the crews trained much like the national guard, doing other jobs but training monthly and an entire month each year in their assigned ship. They can quickly get to their ship when necessary.
I appreciate you not crapping all over the Project Galaxy ships. To me they represented the best ambitions of their time, but met too many war-like situations to continue. The Galaxy Class ships were also the most elegant ships ever designed.
