    One other thing to consider about why some people may have considered the Galaxy project a failure... at the time it was designed, the Galaxy class was intended to be the dominant, most advanced ship ever built by the Federation... yet 3 or 4 of them were destroyed within a decade of the time they were launched. Now, in reality, this simply happened because the writers of various TNG and DS9 episodes deemed it necessary to destroy some ships for dramatic purposes, not because the writing staff had any predetermined notion that Galaxy class ships had some inherent flaw. But if viewed in universe, it's understandable that some people in Starfleet and in the Federation might see it that way... that if almost half the ships of this incredibly powerful new class had been destroyed in just a handful of years, was there something fundamentally wrong with the class, or with the underlying technology on which it was based?
    And then of course, with the first Borg incursion happening just 5 years after the Galaxy class launched, followed soon after by the increasing threat of the Dominion, it's understandable that the Galaxy class and other designs based on that shared pool of technology soon gave way to designs like the Sovereign class, which were built with more of a battleship mindset, didn't have families aboard, etc. Also, newer designs like the Sovereign and Intrepid classes had a sleeker, narrower primary hull with a lower profile, as opposed to the tall neck and broad saucer section of the Galaxy class. These features were not only preferable in a combat situation, as there would be less frontal surface area for an enemy vessel to target, but this kind of design also, it seems, helped with the issue of the subspace damage that warp travel was apparently causing to the fabric of subspace, as discovered in the season 7 TNG episode "Force Of Nature".
    And hey, great video overall... looking forward to the next one! 😀

    So for years I have been begging the STO devs to redesign all their original ships of the line when the game released. They look horrendously out of date, but I always loved their 'utility' aesthetic. In recent years my wish has coem true and they seem to be working on them as time goes by, and sure there have been some underwhelming or disappointing redesigns here and there, but several really do make a big difference. The Shikahr Class is one of those jobs well done, I'm happy this made it into your lore videos

    Great story as always. In my head cannon a brilliant captain, Captain ScottyB, realizing that Starfleet needs warships quickly brings the great idea for the Galaxy hulls to Starfleet. With all the space for people and families not necessary it's decided to strip those areas completely out and begin installing more armament : more phasers, more torpedo launching capability. Shuttle bays filled with fighters and pop up phaser Gatling guns, a extra warp core to power all the guns and phasers. Hull seperation removed to save weight for all the extra torpedoes and fighters. Pure warships that can be manned by minimal crews. This fleet would be staged near Earth with the crews trained much like the national guard, doing other jobs but training monthly and an entire month each year in their assigned ship. They can quickly get to their ship when necessary.

    I wonder if subspace plasma works like electrical fields.
    Like that experiment the UA-camr did with the mile of wire and the power was still instantaneous.
    I imagine the plasma like wire. But the subspace field goes directly to the warp nacelles, not technically through the plasma conduits.
    It would help explain why the pylons are always so skinny. Most of the energy is going through subspace. Just need to keep the connection going.

    A very nice looking vessel (although the nacelles DO somewhat resemble USB drives 🙂 ). Any thoughts on including a much - updated XCV-330 style vessel in your 30'th Century development series? I'm a great fan of the Alcubierre - Drive ring technology, and I feel it just doesn't get the exposure (certainly in fan-fiction) that it truly deserves, even as e.g. interstellar freighter systems.

    The Shi'Kar class was originally mentioned in the Last Unicorn Tabletop RPG long before STO came along. I remember being pleasantly surprised when I discovered the class was in the game only to be annoyed when I realized that for some reason the playable version was classed as a Light Cruiser even though the NPC version is a Frigate like the class was in the tabletop game. I never understood why the people working on STO love to reclassify ships instead of using the class types from the original material.

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  8 місяців тому +2

      Well the problem with the "Last Unicorn Tabletop RPG," is it's lack of pictures... So although A Shi'kahr class IS mentioned, I havent seen a picture of this class connected to it... So it's probably just coincidence and that Class has no relation to this one... So you can't just assume they're the same because you want them to be! Thus the original statement stands either way, the Shi'Kahr Class as first SEEN in STO!

    • @roguerifter9724
      @roguerifter9724 8 місяців тому

      @@TriAngulumAudioStudios Perhaps but I think its unlikely for them to actually not be linked. Possible sure but unlikely. Especially when you consider that the Last Unicorn ship was a Frigate class and the Star Trek Online Shi'Kahrs are also Frigates unless a player is using them
      For some reason players flying Frigates wasn't allowed for the first several years of STO . Instead many ship classes that were Frigates when under NPC control became something else when a player was commanding it, A Light Cruiser in the Shi'Kahr's case. If the Shi'Kahrs only appeared as Light Cruisers in STO I would think it likely to be an odd coincidence but with both the original version and the NPC version being Frigates I find it less likely that they are just a fluke of someone picking the same class name.

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  8 місяців тому +3

      Again coincidences happen ALL the time, and without proof that it's the same ship class, you've got nothing, and CANT declare them the same! You don't have that authority! So the original statement stands!

    • @roguerifter9724
      @roguerifter9724 8 місяців тому

      @@TriAngulumAudioStudios Perhaps but what makes you think there is no connection? It is certainly possible but I would imagine the people working on creating ships for the game browsed through the list of ship classes from the franchise. If I were working on creating the ship selection for an MMO from an established franchise the first thing I would do when I need a class of a certain type is check for existing ship classes in the lore I could reasonably expect to be in service when and where the game occurs.

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  8 місяців тому +1

      It's not perhaps, it's how the world works... Your assumptions are not fact... It's possible it's the same ship class, it's possible there's a connection, but until or unless you have direct proof, you've got nothing but what you "think" is true... And nothing you've said here will ever change that! And no you're completely WRONG with "first thing I would do when I need a class of a certain type is check for existing ship classes in the lore" as everyone knows, you CANT just use someone elses creations under the MMO circumstance, legally... They do not own the copyright, and would want to avoid legal battles. So "creating the ship selection for an MMO" ALWAYS create their OWN classes to avoid that nonsense! So again, you've got nothing and the statement stands!
      Also, Im closing this thread off here as you're just running around in circles, saying the same thing in different ways, when again, you have nothing! Take care!
      (Thread CLOSED- to prevent a circular argument that the OP is just wrong about)

      And you would be completely wrong, as STO is clear as to this coming after Wolf 359, and not a part of Project Galaxy! 😉 and as the video says, it was not easily upgradable, making it scrapworthy after a short lifespan! Especially considering that sort of silly thinking lead to Starfleets defeat at Wolf 359 in the first place lol

    Love the video, but your lore always depicts the Federation as a bunch of WHINERS, constantly judging Starfleet. It makes me laugh sometimes! The Galaxy class didn't perform well against the adaptable Borg with a assimilated Starfleet captain in command? Pack it up boys, send the entire program off to pasture! We'll use our trusty ol' Excelsiors to fight the problem!

      Because that's how they are, watch Trek and see! And that's canon!

      Yes, exactly, because it was a better, far more sturdy design! ;)
