What's really sad is that Misa is reasonably intelligent. She's just prettier than she is smart. And, she gives it all up for love. That's honestly her biggest flaw.

There wasn't a single scene in deathnote that showed that misa was smart , she was easy to manipulate ,stupid and almost revealed her identity to kira... how is she smart for god's sake?
just Some random person A.) She has a stable career, makes tons of money, and is popular. You have to be smart to have a career like that, even if it isn't shown exactly. B.) Have you read the manga, read the anime, and seen the most knowledgeable sequels to Death Note? Probably not. She kills people, and would have gotten away with it if she didn't meet Light. (The love she gave everything away for.) L is brilliant, and smarter than her. That's a huge reason why she seems so stupid. C.) She literally sent tapes to a popular T.V network and got away with it, besides the single hair that was on them. A simple mistake. You have to be smart to get away with it for that long. D.) You need to dwell into the mentality of her character, instead of basing it off of what you see. I personally don't like Misa, but I'm smart enough to question what she does, why she does it, and how she actually deems it correctable.
You should seriously look into stuff. I know that she doesn't seems so smart on the surface, but ya know.

I believe L was the smartest in the series. Even though he died. He knew the entire time, who the Kira's were. He just lacked evidence. Had L been more reliant, and had he have worked with his successors in the first place, L could have caught Kira. Rather than just knowing the identities
But it could be argued that Light was the smartest, because he led up to L's death. Yet L wouldn't have died, if Rem didn't love Misa. Light, was too reliant on other people. So he wasn't the most intellegent, he just had a lot at his disposal, which he used wisely. But his reliance, led to his being caught and death.
I would have said Near too, but he was also reliant on people, and wouldn't have caught Kira, without Mello.
Matt was pretty cool, but I wouldn't say he was the most intellegent.

Things you didn't know about Death Note unless you read the manga: 1- Near is rated higher than L in intelligence in the extra volume of Death Note. 2- In the manga Light begs for his life while Ryuk is writing his name in the note book. 3- It was hinted in the manga that Near leaked information to Mello on purpose, so what Mello did was Near's plan to force Mekami to reveal the real death note, because he saw through the fake one. 4- It was also hinted in the manga that when Near found the real death note, he wrote Mekami's name on it, and has been manipulating him to make sure that Mekami doesn't test the death note before going to the meeting place. 5- Near never actually met L, so he's not trying to copy him. 6- Near once asked one of his allies to travel with him to Japan and then travel back to America, because he didn't know how to go through traveling procedures, admitting that his lack of experience is his weak point. 7- As L was looking at Light's evil smile while dying, he said to himself "So I was right after all".

Actually, L IS more intelligent than Near. The creators of Death Note said that he is the smartest along with Light in the Death Note universe. If you look at the original manga, it's not 'intelligence' but actually 'knowledge', which means that the numbers show how much the character knows(ex: scientific facts), not how intelligent that character is. Also, L's stat was upgraded to 9 later on when the anime was made so it can't be proof that Near is more intelligent anyway. x)

Sky. K Nope, it wasn't "knowledge" but "intelligence", Near is actually smarter than L, but he got a lower "Willingness to act" stats than both L and Mello, because of that it was mentioned that Near can only surpass L if he works with Mello.
I don't think it's a fair comparison though, because Near barely had time to shine, his arc was roughly 12 episodes and there were a lot of other characters, unlike L who had all the time he needed to be the focus of his arc.
asiel smith I don't blame you for thinking this way, but Near's arc was kinda rushed, the manga had better explanations for his accomplishments, and for some reason the anime didn't show Matsuda's conversation with Ide about the aftermath of Light's death in the last chapter (chapter 108), that chapter is the reason I respect Near.

Mone I don't get it why people think light is less intelligent because Rem killed L, I think that was his best move because he managed to kill REM(who threatened to kill light if something happened to misa) with L,and he secured her death note too.
If light had no help from Rem, misa already had shinigami eyes, L would have been dead as soon as he met misa.
And L knew who was Kira and light still managed to hide all evidence from him, isn't that an amazing achievement.

Didn't care about melo and nero's characters, some episodes were really boring and non suspenseful afterwards.
Although I think the end was good and fit the story well.
bananaempijama Yotsuba group arc was far more boring in my opinion and after L's death Light still has his god complex (even stronger, as when his father dies he just wants him to kill mello and feels nothing more). He's indirectly still battling L with his successors (he even says so himself)

I was originally upset too that Light lost, I actually thought Light was the coolest villain-protagonist ever.
But after several re-reads, I switched to Mello, then L... And in the end, I think it really made best sense that Near won in the end. And I now like Near.

On Death Note Wikia, it says that Light and Near are both 9/10 intelligence wise, whereas L is only an 8/10! Plus, Light's knowledge of Shinigami and notebooks sure did help a lot. People say he's cocky or overly confident, but i think he feels the right amount of confident simply because he's up to the task, like he knows his abilities and bases his ambitions on them. He's not exaggerating, he truly is as great as he says he is, so... But despite all that stuff, L still is my favorite character ever!

Originally manga should have ended in L's victory but they needed more money so they decided to make it longer. In the movie L defeats Light (destroys is a better word) and that is the best ending

+Tom Do to add to this, the way 'です' is pronounced also depends on what part of Japan you live in or visit. The most common dialect used is the Tokyo dialect where it is commonly pronounced as 'des' with a silent 'u'. However, if you visit the more countryside part of Japan, some people pronounce it with the 'u'. (info taken. from a Japanese professor I had who's mother tongue is Japanese)

I totally agree with that order! Light may have won against L, but only because he had much more information that L did not have (Shinigami, how Kira kills, the rules of usage) etc. And he had Rem and Misa as an ally, which made it hard for L to win. Near just could only solve the case because of the work L had already accomplished. And Mellow is just a dumb, overreactive kid who dares to use violence.

Blah. If Near was the first one to tackle the Kira investigation and not L, Light would have found out his name and killed him after 3 episodes. Near basically used L's work as a piggyback to aid his own investigation.
L, smartest character, why, was the first one to figure out Light's game and taught Near and Mello.
I think L is the smartest character out of the series. I believed he sacrifice himself, just to prove Light was kira. I think he trusted enough in his successors to bring the truth that Light was indeed kira. L was just a little too prepared to die, he had it all set up and plan on how he wanted things to turn out after his death.
L is definitely the smartest character....sure he didn't catch Light but all of melo's and near's theories were already what L had come up with WAY before so they pretty much had a head start

The only reason he didn't catch Light is because Rem killed him before he could prove that the 13 day rule was fake. L surely would've caught Light, he was too smart for him. Which is probably why he had to die to keep the show interesting.

+Lawy Cat I thought it was still interesting. Near was very similar to L, which made it feel like Light would never be able to fully get rid of L. Like there would always be another L trying to catch him. Mello on the other hand wasn't as similar to L. To me he was more of a bad guy, more of a rebel. And the competition between Near and Mello was also something I liked, it kept the show interesting. But the show was indeed better when L was still alive, obviously.
L is the smartest. Light comes closely behind him. Mello and Near are equally smart in different ways, what one lacks the other makes up for so if they combine their forces they can surpass Light (which is what happened in the anime and manga) and they would be equal to L. If only Mello agreed to work with Near he may have survived.
He stopped valuing his own life because Near was always ahead of him, it says how Mellow was always close behind Near. But I think without Mellow it would have taken more time for everyone to see that Light Yagami was Kira.

Eve I like Mellow also, I was upset when he knew that he had to give up his life to solve the Kira case.
Without Mellow, I doubt Near would have solved the case as soon as he did. Mellow was a big part of the investigation.

Light had full(ish) knowledge of the Death Note the whole time, while L spent most of his investigation refusing to believe that Shinigami even existed. In fact, in the end L had figured out the whole case and was already sure that Light was Kira, but he was destroyed by things he could not control- namely, Rem, and the other members of the task force who inadvertently caused his demise. Just because someone had the advantage and a few more tricks up their sleeve does not make someone smarter, rather luckier and craftier, and thus I have to say that L was actually smarter than Light. As for Near and Mello, the author has basically stated that it took both Near and Mello working together to match L, so as to imply that L was superior. I suppose that's just what I have gathered, though.

I've heard that Near and Mello were actually supposed to have their names swapped. In the anime Mello was always in the thick of the action trying to catch Kira. (He was always near) Near has a really relaxed personality much like that of L's (His personality was mello)

In the English dub for Death Note, the voice actor that played L also voice acted as one of the male barbies in Barbie The Princess And The Pauper. I think it's name was Julian? I figured that one out when I was watching my cousin and she wanted to watch it. I totally freaked out when I heard L's voice and nearly had a HEART ATTACK. eh? eh? get it? But seriously that was a total shock to me. And I hadn't seen that movie since I was a midget (which is my term for little kid). At least that now explains some of the fan art I've seen. XD

These are the ways I wanted things to go. THIS IS MY OPINION DONT HATE.
1) L wins. Or at least against Light. I'd want Misa to become the one who had control of the situation, having both Death Notes and the Shinigami eyes.
2) Light wins. I didn't really like how it ended. I know I should have been rooting for him to lose but this anime messed me up.
3) Everyone dies or something. Just anything but how it ended in the last episode

And please don't reply to me saying that he had help or that L started the job and Near just finished it. Cause Near knew nothing about what information L had gotten, or who he suspected (well he did know L suspected Light, but only because he figured that out by the way Light acted.) And others had help too. L had the whole japaneese police at the start (later just a few from there + some people he already was with. Might I add _that's the same, or even more help than Near had_ ) and Light had the four other Kiras, Ryuk, Rem (witch he could use by litterly asking his girlfriend who was a _little_ obsessed whit him, and Rem would do it. And he actually did that and asked to kill L, the first time, and it would've worked if L hadn't captured Mistuka the day she was supposed to kill L.) and his main weapon - death note. Near had the same or arguably less help than L or Light had. He also was visibly younger, than L or Light. I feel as if he was a bit older he'd be VERY MUCH smarter than L or Light. He figured Light was Kira wayyyyyy faster than L did. He spent about seven episodes in the anime, L couldn't do it in twenty five. Go on and use your _minimal effort_ to prove me wrong. SuperSnivyFan first of all L knew light was kira the entire time. He just had no evidence to prove it. Second Near had tons of help. At the end of the show he had that one person completely replicate the death note. Which was a reason why he won. Third Light's death wasnt his fault. He outsmarted Near just the fourth kira (cant remember his name right now) went to the bank that second time which was unusual about his schedule which let Near beat Light. Another thing. L had really no help. If you actually think about it all of the police department werent that smart. It was L alone doing all of the smart related things while they did the things L couldnt do by himself. Same goes of Near. I personally think Light is the smartest. His one mistake was in the beginning of the show when he let L trick him because he thought he won. Light's confidence and reliance on others is what made him lose too. Even though the fourth kira messed up he couldve explained that Near couldve made the fourth kira right everybody's names except Light's so everybody thinks Light is Kira. If he had thought this through he could have made them check through the entire death note while he would kill them with a ripped out piece of paper. You can think Near is the smartest but i think Light is but he just isnt experienced as much as Near and L.

light is by FAR the smartest character. People forget that Light was years behind L and still was higher than L' s standards. Yeah sure L always had a hunch Light was Kira the entire time, but that shouldn't outshine the fact that his suspicions dissipated as they became close and Light intentionally lost his memories to the Death Note - so logically Light had outsmarted him two times prior to his death. He is the smartest character by far.

Was some of this sourced from the interview with Tsugumi Ohba in Death Note 13: How to Read? I was reading that section of the book a few days ago and some of the things in the video were also mentioned in the interview.
BTW, Am I the only one who hates Near? I support Light and L. I hate the fact that Near was the one who win against Light. I hate how he copies L and thinks like he can surpass him. He smiles like him, he acts weird like him, He has his own world when he's not working, and he named himself as "N". I hate him so much. >.
He copies L because that was what he was raised to do. Wammys was an abusive organization driven to create L's copies. Near was just doing the only thing he knew how to do. I feel like he should have mentioned the two spin off novels Death Note: Another Note The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases written by Nisioisin and told from Mello's point of view, and L Change The World, written by Takami Nieda and also told from Mello's point of view. The books don't cost much and they're definitely worth a read.

Yagami Light is the smartest character in Death Note, no doubt. I mean think about it. He defeated L, who was supposed to be the greatest detective alive. Near and Mello had to work together, even if they both hated each other, just to get to Yagami Light.
Lol no. A light yagami fan here too but we have to be honest, he also did some mistakes making him stupid such as killing Lind L. Tailor without thinking that he's a suspect arrested secretly. And another example is when he killed Takimura without hesitation, making the Mafia group know slight infos about Kira. Also and lastly, his prediction was almost precise but except for the nb. It was exchanged with the fake one and Light didn't know that Near did..

And Near alone didn't catch Light, he needed Mello's help to catch Light. Even Near admitted that he wouldn't have caught Light without Mello's help. Near said that if Mello and him works together, they would be superior to L, thus catching kira/Yagami Light.
Just My Opinion No one said Light was brave. What I said is that Yagami Light is smart. The fact that he got the Shinigami to do something for his benefit is genius.

Everybody saying "light wasnt smarter then L he was just luckyer" i totally agree with that but think about it: i belive that more you are octimistic more is the luck u get. L seems that he lost the motivation when he found out that light wasnt actually Kira (even though he was but thats not the point), and Light who always stayed positive about the fact that he will win and thats what actually happened (just between him and L). In conclusion they were both smart but in different ways

Smartest character I have to say is Light, I'd say L but since Light did actually end up being killed even though it was Rem whom wrote his name down it was technically partly Light's idea. And even though Near won in the end he definitely isn't as smart as L, and while people can argue that Near is smarter than Light and this is why he won, Light did lose it completely at the end of the manga, and anime so. Also I apologize for anyone who hasn't finished death note because this entire comment is a huge spoiler.
