I've looked for much info on the Gaviota series. I haven't run in 20 years after 2 hip replacements, a bad knee, and I overpronate but i walk about 30 miles a week. Your in-depth review is the best I have come across providing so much useful information. I'm convinced to go with the 4. Thanks Tim!
Hi Dan. I'm glad you found it helpful. I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you pick up a pair, let me know what you think! Thanks for watching. I appreciate it. Have a great day and Happy Holidays!
I am a big guy in the 300 pound range, I don't walk well do to damage, and so far the Gaviota 3 is the best at keeping me walking , and keeping me from harshly rounding the heal of the shoe. I did finally split the side of the shoe upper, but only after 2 years and the heal was still solid and not rounded. Not even the Stride Right shoes, when I was a child lasted that long, and they all rounded the heal. I will try and find the 3 if possible as that was the perfect shoe, if not I guess the lighter 4 will have to be my choice. For a handicap that round the heal, these shoes where a blessing, and allowed me to walk better than I have in a long time with a lot less pain than I am used too.
Hi Melvin. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience in them. It really helps our fellow runners and walkers. The Gaviota has been a go to shoe for me for many years. I also enjoy them. Have a great day and stay safe.
Gaviota 3 are superb for me because I love the firm responsive feeling. I weigh 100kg so firm cushioning is a blessing. Light runners don't understand that a squishy shoe for heavy runners is really not nice and exhausting to run in
Awesome. Let me know how you like it. It's always nice to save a little money. Running shoes are very expensive these days. Enjoy your new shoes and have a great day. Thanks for the comment and keeping the conversation going.
Hi, I saw this Gaviota 3 vs 4 video by you and afterwards I went back and saw your earlier Gaviota 3 review video. The criticism of Gaviota 3 that you mention in this video is NOT THERE in the earlier video. Would appreciate if you could explain the change in your views on Gaviota 3. Thanks.
Hey great question. I appreciate you keeping the conversation going. My impressions haven't changed of the Gaviota 3. It's still a plush max cushion and max stability running shoe. And if you over pronate it will get the job done for you for sure. Not everyone needs that much pronation correction but if you do it will likely be a good choice for you. When I reviewed the Gaviota 3, I was reviewing as a stability running shoe with some comparison to the earlier version of the Gaviota 2. Of the choices for stability shoes out there across all brands, it's a plush ride and similar to the previous version. Unfortunately no stability shoe will ever be as plush or nimble as a neutral daily trainer can be because of the job they need to do. In order for a stability shoe to bring us back into a healthy pronation the midsole cannot be overly plush. If it were, then it wouldn't be able to correct our foot strike. When the Gaviota 4 was released, it is, in my opinion a softer more cushioned ride when compared to version 3 (and not as stiff). Having both running shoes available to me, I prefer the softer more flexible ride of version 4 by way of comparison. I always strive to give my honest opinion in every video. For me, the Gaviota 4 is the better choice for me personally. However, they are both plush rides with ample pronation control when compared to other stability shoe offerings that are available. But when compared to each other, I found the Gaviota 3 to be less cushioned, more stiff. If you are trying to decide which one is right for you. In my opinion the Gaviota 3 offers more pronation control, it is still highly cushioned when compared to other brands, but is a more stiff less flexible ride than the newest Gaviota 4. I hope that helps.
I was waiting for this review. I haven't tried the 4 yet but based on your review, I will be buying more 3's since I prefer the firmer ride. I just wish there were more color offerings in my size. Also, good to hear Hoka went with a more traditional lacing system on the 4. That's one thing I don't like about the 3. Too many eyelets!
Hi Fidel. The Gaviota 3 is definitely the most firm of the Gaviota series of shoes. I'm with you on the eyelet chain. The simple lace enclosure system works just fine. Have a great day and thanks for the comment and keeping the conversation going.
Tim, try the new Saucony Tempus. It is a light stability shoe that uses a combination of PWRUN PB (like in Endorphin Speed/Pro) and PWRRUN (like in Ride 15/Guide 15). It is a pretty lightweight shoe. I am actually thinking of getting a pair even though I don't use stability shoes, but I could use more stability in my recovery/easy runs when my gait is more relaxed.
Hey Tolunay. I’ll have to check them out. Thanks for the tip. I hear you. Some days it’s nice to have a little extra stability. Have a great day and thanks again for taking the time to keep the conversation going.
Both the Gaviota and Arahi are good stability shoes with the Gaviota being a max cushion max stability. It's kind of along the lines of a stability version of the Bondi. While the Arahi is more like a stability version of the the Clifton. If you are looking for a more max cushion ride with stability then the Gaviota is the way to go. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day and stay safe.
Hey i brought the gaviota 3s in 2021 from watching your channel. But i cant find the 3s anymore? Are they canceled? I just purchased the 4s but they're not that comfortable for amazon floors
anyone know where i can buy Hoka Gaviota 3? since i have flat feet, motion control and wide rigid i found the 3 is the only one that i can feel comfortable after digging in runrepeat to identify my feet but i can't find an online store to buy with my size.
Hi, first time subscriber….thank you so much for your review….im new to Hoka. I have plantar fasciitis & i underpronate….however i am not a runner. Im just looking for an every day athletic shoe. It was suggested to me to wear Hokas simply for my Pf….would you suggest the Gaviota or a different Hoka in general? Thank you for your help!! 😊
Welcome! Thanks so much for subscribing. The Gaviota 4 is a max stability shoe that will bring you into a healthy level of pronation and is well cushioned. If you only mildly under pronate than the Bondi might be a better choice. It’s their max cushion neutral road shoe that many people who spend a lot of time on their feet swear by. The Bondi 8 was just released and I have read that it’s even more cushioned than last years version. I haven’t reviewed it yet. I will be soon. I’ve ordered it but it hasn’t shipped yet. I hope this helps. Have a great day!
Hi Tim, I noticed your channel when the Gaviota 3 came out and that you were a stability shoe reviewer (something that’s lacking a lot on UA-cam) I’ve noticed you using neutral shoes in your recent race videos and I’ve always wondered if you can make the change from stability to carbon plated shoes safely How did you do this and what was your experience like? P.s I also bought both the Gaviota 3 and 4 👍
I have been working over the last few year to change my foot strike. I went from a solid heal striker to more of a forefoot foot strike. Because I over pronate severely, when I was heal striking I had to have pronation control to keep me from rolling in on my ankles. By changing my foot strike to my forefoot, I don't collapse inward like I was. Now I'm able to run in neutral shoes safely. I do however, wear the Gaviota often to walk and run errands in because I still walk with my heal striking the ground first and I can use the pronation control. I started making the change 2 years ago. Initially it was a little difficult but over time it's become very natural feeling. Now when I purposely try to heal strike for a shoe review, I find it uncomfortable and difficult to maintain for very lone. I hope this helps. Have a great day.
Hello! New subscriber here. Excellent review. Would you mind comparing the Hoka Gaviota 4 against the Bondi 8? I walk/run on a treadmill and have rheumatoid arthritis so comfort is a bit of a factor. Thanks!
Hey Tammy. Welcome to the Run Tall family! Thanks for subscribing.Yes I will be taking a look and the Bondi 8. It should be released sometime this month as long as Hoka doesn't have any delays. I'm really excited to try the Bondi 8. Hoka has been making changes to their midsoles including (according to Hoka) the Bondi 8 to make it a little lighter and softer. It should be a good one. Have a great day and thanks for the great suggestion.
Tim, what’s your preference for a max cushion stability shoe? I’ve never tried Hoka, but enjoy the NB Vongo V5 and ASICS Gel Kayano 28. Haven’t had a Brooks show since the Adrenaline 19 which I’m was very comfortable. I’d really enjoy if you did a comparison and ranking of all the stability shoes you’ve tried.
Hi Joseph. I had run in the Adrenaline series for a lot of years. My last pair was the 18's for it's been a couple since I've run in them. I switched up to the Gaviota and loved the Gaviota 2. I didn't like the Gaviota 3 as much. It's a little to stiff for me. I'm back liking the 4 though. I also like the Gel Kayano 28. Between the Gaviota 4 and the Gel Kayano 28, I am leaning more toward the Gaviota 4. Both are good shoes though. Thanks for the question. Have a great day and stay safe.
My Gaviota 3 are as mentioned, stiff as iron. Feels like the J frame is the guilty party. The upper is nice. And impossible to use after rain as they are super slippery. Overall, not good for running as far as I can tell. I for one hope the 4 is, as you describe, much better as the 3 is not nice at all.

can you compare the gavi3 with clifton8? never tryd gaviota but i feel the clifton 8 too soft for me
g3 's outsole is plushier than g4, but the feeling of g4 is high quality shoes conpare G3. im running into g3 & g4. so the above is my own opinion

Какие брать лучше Хока Гавиота/Арахи или Саукони Гайд?(пооскостопие, степень запущености сложно определить но думаю не критичная).
