    Tim - first of all thanks for the great and thorough reviews and to me, it's the best stuff on the internet. I've been running now for 50 years but last year was almost a running wipeout for me, not due to the pandemic, but rather 2 days of spinal fusion surgery in January 2020. I walked all year and ran a little very late in the year but now 17 months post-op I'm running again (more like trotting) and really feeling great. So here's my dilemma. I've always been a "big" runner (6'2") and as recently as 2017 ran the NYC Marathon at around 235 lbs (I wore Brooks Adrenaline) However, during my downtime last year I gained weight and I'm working hard to drop it and I hope to get close to my 1980 MCM weight of 180 in 1 year. I started wearing the Hoka Clifton 5's in early 2018 and really like the engineering of the shoe. As I'm about to turn 73 in July I think the Hoka Gaviota 3 design concept fits my age and challenges. So right now I need the cushioning etc and for sure, screw any thoughts of a PR. I am a natural size 12 or 13D and based on "gait" testing/video in 2004 it was recommended I jump to size 14 and I've burned through many a pair of size 14 Brooks Adrenaline since then. In my case considering age, surgery, body size I know you are not a shoe fitter but do you think, based on your suggestions, that ordering the Gaviota 3 in both the 13.5 W and 14D makes sense and then make a home based decision on which to keep?

    • @RunTall

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. I'm glad you are doing better and are able to start running again. Illness and injuries are a part of life and I am inspired by your tenacity. I ran in the Brooks Adrenaline for years and made the switch to the Gaviota a few years ago and was very happy with the move. Your idea to order the 2 different sizes is a good plan. Sadly shopping in person to try running shoes on right now is still limited so I think this is a great option for you. I will be interested to hear what you ultimately decide on. Good luck with your new shoes. Have a great weekend.

    Great review! I was wondering if there have been any changes with the width and height of the toebox between the Gaviota 2 and Gaviota 3?
    I currently own the Adrenaline GTS 20 and the 860v11, how does the Gaviota 2/3 fair in comparison with regards to cushioning, room and stability?

    • @RunTall
      @RunTall  3 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to ask the question. The Gaviota 3 is more narrow in the toebox and the midsole when compared to the Gaviota 2. HOKA also added 2mm more of EVA foam to the midsole. However, I think the Gaviota 3 feels a little less cushioned than the Gaviota 2. They are both great stability shoes depending on your preference. Have a great day.

      @@RunTall Thank you for taking the time out to answer, I really appreciate it. It seems Gaviota 2 would be more suitable for me then, but sadly I cannot get hold of the wide fit anymore in the UK. I will try the Gaviota 3, it seems great that they added more EVA to mid sole, but I will have to see if the upper section of my foot will fit in. If it is similar to the 860v11, I should be okay

    Stability shoes' mid soles are mostly hard and solid, I know only Arahi 5 in Hoka but it's Gaviota with max cushion...how much is softer than Arahi 5 and any other max cushioning and stability shoes?

    • @RunTall
      @RunTall  3 роки тому +3

      The Arahi 5 is like the stability version of the Clifton while the Gaviota is the stability version of the Bondi. The Gaviota 3 does feel soft and well cushioned. I can't compare it to the Arahi 5 as I haven't run in those shoes. I have had the Arahi on foot in the past but it's been awhile. You are absolutely right about the midsole in stability shoes needing to be more dense in some areas to help reduce under or over pronation issues. A lot of more dense material seems to be around the heel and the medial side of the shoe (I think anyway). The more I mid to forefoot strike the less of an issue that becomes. These do have a lot of cushion in those areas. These are on par with the Asics Gel Kayano Lite and they are they feel much softer to me than the Brooks Adrenaline's do. I hope this helps. Hey thanks for watching and have a great day.

    Hi Tim, you mentioned the meta rocker being a bit too far up the foot. Is that the same with the 2s? And being lighter, do you like the 2s more? Love your reviews...

    • @RunTall
      @RunTall  3 роки тому

      All of the Gaviota's have the late stage meta rocker. It does provide for a really stable ride. These are a max stability shoe. The 3's seem to be built up a little more than the 2's on the medial side from your arch back to your heel. This does slow your pronation down a lot. I'm going to have to log more miles in the 3's to know if I like that more or not. I've always found the 2's to be a great stability shoe for me. At this point, I think I do prefer the 2's over the 3's but I really need to put in more miles. I've been wearing the 3's around for everyday use lately just to get a better feel for them. The EVA seems to be breaking in a little making them feel softer than my initial run. So a little more testing and I'll have a better answer. Thanks for watching. Have a great day and stay safe.

    Do you think this would be a good shoe to get for rehab and pt after an ACL tear?

    • @RunTall
      @RunTall  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Tim. First, I want to wish you a speedy recovery. It must be difficult for you.
      The Gaviota 3 is a max stability shoe and I think you do well with it. They are very stable but with plenty of cushion. I'm not a doctor or physical therapist so it might be a good idea to check with them as well to be sure you are not going cause any more damage and will help you as you go through rehab. The only question I'd have is the offset from the heel to the toe. Hoka has a relatively lower offset. These feature a 5mm drop from the heel to toe. In the past when I've been rehabbing a knee injury my PT had me install lifts in my heel to increase the offset to reduce the stress on my knee. I hope your rehab goes well and you are up and running soon. Take care and have a great day.

    Just bought the Bondi 7. I'm coming back to running after years (feel like a beginner again), and housing a couple partial meniscus tears. Would these have been better than the Bondi's for a beginner and someone looking for maximum cushion? Just asking because of the 'stability' aspect. Thanks!

    • @RunTall
      @RunTall  3 роки тому +4

      If you are a neutral shoe runner than the Bondi 7's are probably a better fit. The Gaviota's are a max stability shoe so they want to guide your foot strike. But if you don't need that, the Bondi's will be a softer ride. I hope this helps. Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Have a great day and thanks again.

      The Gaviota is a max cushion and max stability shoe, so for a stability shoe they are well cushioned but all stability shoes are going to be somewhat firm in order to control pronation. The New Balance More V3 isn't a stability shoe but it is max cushion. For me, I do over pronate but I run in neutral shoes most of the time.
