  • Ouran High School Host Club is not about host clubs. It's not about hosts. It's not about entertaining girls. It's not about rich kids. It's about the power to dream.
One of the smartest, most subversive anime ever made and THE textbook case for subverting established stereotypes to tell a profound story.

and the reason they lie when people guess them correctly, is because they want people to actually know who they are. Not just guess. And that alone brings me a tear to my eye with this show

I’ve watched all of the ouran retrospectives on UA-cam, and this is easily my favourite. It sets out my thoughts on the series perfectly, absolutely amazing job

I love this. I think it also helped me understand more of why I relate to Haruhi so much. Besides the queer side of her. I did the exact same thing as her. I didn't have fun and baried myself in studies not only to live up to expectations but to hide from reality. I didn't learn I could have fun while doing my studies until my senior year of college.

I'm upset this video doesn't have more views because it's really good.
Ouran high school host club was one of my first animes to watch when i was like 13 or something and i loved it and today after many years i stopped watching anime entirly i still go back and check on my hosts every once in while and you actually made me realise now why i do that, it's because they sell a dream not only to themselves but to us the spectators, the point of making the characters so stereotypical and not so complex is for everyone to relate to them and dream with them. I remember when i was little i felt different and misunderstood from people around so i kept it all to myself and my sole companion was me so for the longest part i related to the twins, they were the physical embodiment of my problem so watching them putting the facade and then letting go very slowly always made me happy and that goes on and on with every time i watch the anime i relate to different character depending on my situation that's why it's still relevant in my memory not just because of the good story but because they actually helped me in a way so yeah... Thank you for reminding me of my old friends

Another potent review. There's a chance that if you were introduced to anime through the internet, Ouran Highschool Host Club is one of the first anime you'll end up watching since it's on UA-cam, or at least it used to be. So that was the case for me. Everything in this anime was a first for me - the setting, the art style, the plot, the characters, the genre itself. I had no idea what I was watching, and definitely couldn't keep it playing in front of my family. So I remember finishing it by staying up for a full night or two. Still, it didn't make much of an impression on me but fast forward 4 to 5 years and though the show was completely out of my memory, the better idea I had developed about the stereotypes presented in that anime sometimes made me think about it. For example, I saw the elite high school setting so many times after Ouran that I was reminded of where I first saw it. However, I never went back to rewatch the show since I'd fallen out of harems and high school settings, and didn't remember any of the deeper aspects of the show. This video gave me a much deeper appreciation and expectation for the anime. Now that I can see the tropes as well as how they're being subverted, I think I'll love it.

I think something that makes Ouran shine so much is that it is a shoujo manga that exsists to be a subversion of all other shoujo troupes. All the guys and the stereotypes they fall into are very typical romance troupes, especially for reverse harem anime, and so what the story does that is so brilliant is that it takes all of these troupes, pokes fun at them for existing, and then uses their exsistance to create highly compelling characters. its like a painter making fun of other painters for using watercolours, so they paint a satirical watercolour piece, only for it to be an amazing watercolour painting.

To be honest, when I first watched the anime, I was around 12 so I couldn't go deeper much about it (but still it's my favorite anime because I could get some important points about it), there are times that I couldn't understand why the famous tropes or stereotypes of the characters suddenly change or become serious, but I'm glad this anime is just a freaking gem

I appreciate that you touched on things that a lot of reviews miss. Just wanted to add one piece of context: A reason the host club is similar to but not the same as others in this way is also because Tamaki is not culturally Japanese, and unlike Renge, he isn't a Weeb by choice, he became a Weeb due to trying to adopt and adapt to Japanese culture after his primary formative years. His tendency to try to spin things positively did the rest.
Tangentially, it's also why he has the most bizarre view of Haruhi's lifestyle, despite also coming from a poor background - He knows all about being French poor, but has no idea what it means to be Japanese poor.
Just an extra 2 cents. Great video
