  • In this video, we are getting ready for repairs on the old outbuilding that needs some serious fixing up, oh, and a new roof, new doors and a couple of windows. Watch as we begin the long process of clearing out the stone farm building and yet again uncovering the flag stones and old animal waste gully in this the run-down building ready for a DIY overhaul.
    Don't miss the previously unseen aerial photo from 40+ years ago showing just how lovely this farm looked.
    With swallows flying around and Great Tits nesting in the bird box, we have the bluest sky, warm temperatures and the most beautiful sunset.
    Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

    It has been a busy week with getting the outbuilding ready for work to start, a trip to the tip and some visitors. It is nice to now have access to all of the stuff that came out of the outbuilding. A little spoiler, watch out for an aerial photograph showing the farmhouse and surrounding buildings as they used to look roughly 40 years ago. A lot has changed.

    I’m so excited to see the out building getting rebuilt and pointed and roofed!! You’ll have so much storage space for your tools and lumber and stuff!! 😊💚

      Ah so are we. We never got to use the space before the roof collapsed, luckily there was very little in it at the time. We are hoping to have a workshop and storage space under one roof. Keep your fingers crossed for us that it all goes to plan :-)
      Thank you for always joining us and I hope you have a lovely week :-)

      It’s amazing isn’t it? I watched the video back last night and even I was amazed at how many birds are singing! Dad made the bird box too which makes it even more special! He was chuffed to bits when I sent him a video of them going into it ❤️

    Hi Dawn and Ben. I am in my 70’s now. I grew up in a house that my parents tore down and built back up while we lived there and there were 7 of us kids to boot. I also have renovated homes I lived in as well as building the home I lived in for most of my life. Maybe that’s why I love watching you 2 so much. I can relate. My dad used to say “ I have to make it ugly before I can make it pretty”. I have moved the same stuff around many times while building or remodeling. It’s just part of the process. Everything looks so organized now. Good job. Thanks for sharing the photos. Also thanks for wishing rain in Florida, it has rained just enough for the last 3 days. Thanks again for sharing your journey 🌳🌳🌳🪨🪨🪨

      Hi Brenda. I love your Dad’s saying ❤️ I think I am going to keep that in mind when I’m next in despair at all of the mess around us. I’m also very glad you can relate, I think living here has made it harder to get going on the house at times, it would have been far easier to have not been living here but if your parents can do it whilst having 7 kids in the house at the same time, I’m sure we can get on with it too. Thank you because I think it was the metaphorical kick up the backside I needed to hear, I find it soo overwhelming sometimes when I think of all the upheaval that is needed to just to do any of it while we live in it all. Fingers crossed when we get the outbuilding done and reroofed, we will have the space to get some of the unnecessary stuff in the house outside whilst we start on the rooms in the house.
      I am so glad the rain wish came true for you! What a relief when it finally happens eh?!
      Thanks again for your comment. 😊❤️

We have a clear outbuilding ready to start, the timber is all sorted and now accessible and the last of our belongings now have a new home and accessible in the other outbuilding.
      Fingers crossed we will get started this week :)

    A furry angel was watching you playing with his wheelbarrow. Ben, your wood pile stayed up by the grace of God, haha! Only teasing. Sweet angel watching a larger sweet angel! Busy birdhouse! Dawn, you and I organize exactly the same way - new wood pile looks great and Ben, your stone piles are super. Love the flag stones in the outbuilding. Photo is terrific! This building will be fantastic as your work room to do carpentry etc. or storage when it's done.

      I don't think there was anything in that video that you missed out... let me go and check... be right back.......
      Nope, you mentioned it all, thank you so much :-)
      Steve always like to know how to do things, he can cook, clean, plant things... a clever little sod really for a cat. Alan on the other hand just wants to be friends with the cows. I think the wood pile was indeed by the grace of God to be honest as it tried to collapse on me when I was piling it up at the start. But it lasted as long as it needed to. Get me!
      Dawn is a great organiser, if it wasn't for Dawn everything would still be in boxes, I would have no idea where anything is and I would be swearing and banging about complaining that I can't find anything. If it has a place, Dawn sorted it. If it doesn't have a place, I took it from it's place and left it out hahaha.
      The stone piles aren't finished, but I will get there... maybe. It is so nice to see the flag stones and gully again. It wasn't any amount of time after clearing that building to it's roof collapsing and that was that, we haven't seen the floor since really. All sorted now though Tracy and raring to go on the stone work.
      Hopefully, although it is a huge job, it won't take us forever. We won't do a 14 day challenge though as we all know how that went. We are looking forward to it being finished, just to have a space, with a roof :-)
      Thank you so much Tracy for always being here :-)

      Yeah the house and land has changed a fair bit over the years, fingers crossed we can make it look similar once again lol
      The cats are living a fantastic life here, it warms my heart to see them running at full speed down the land and launching themselves like Spider-Man at a tree! I’ll have to remember to bring the camera down in the evening to catch what they get up to! ❤️

    I remember watching early on as you pulled all that ivy off the Outhouse and have to say it's looking so much better now and it will be beautiful when finished, even better than the old photo which was lovely to see. And you are so lucky that the blue-tits approved of the accommodation, ours weren't impressed and decided not to stay😢. I saw that one of the cats was finding it interesting, as well as the cow! Aren't they having the best life.❤

      Good evening Pat, how has your week been?
      Yes, it certainly looked different then to how it does now. But it did still have a roof which is more than can be said for it now lol. Fingers crossed we can make a start next week and really crack on with it. The lime has been brought out of retirement as have the tools and now we are just waiting on the hessian.
      The birds are in and out, in and out. They always have a good look around for the cats before going in, but it seems with them both being out and coming back with food that they have chicks, we can't hear them but we are sure they are in there. But yes, the one cat is always interested unlike the cow watching cat haha. They seem to be loving their new home as are we.
      Thank you Pat for always joining us and commenting. Have a lovely week :-)

    How true when you said, "It never ends". I make piles of my sewing fabric, lose sewing items, and keep, keep, keep! In the end, all I am doing is moving it from one place to another. Crazy for sure. My husband is a keeper of stuff too. We had a Rummage sale at my Church and I asked him if he wanted to donate. No was the answer to downsizing just a little. Then I asked a couple of men at the sale if they were willing to give up some stuff and I was surprised the men would not give up anything. The wives just rolled their eyes. So, it's a thing to keep 10 screw drives, 4 hammers, broken air compressors, etc, etc.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Hahaha, it never does! Maybe I just need to make peace with the fact we are going to move things multiple times until we’re done lol. I am terrible for hanging onto to all sorts of stuff…”just in case it will come in handy one day” ! I’m not a fan of throwing anything away, not the best trait when you’re short on storage areas! 😂

    I love the fact you can talk to people who live in the corner house. What a wonderful picture they shared with you. I do hope they are as proud of what you two have done so far as we are. It’s neat watching the cats in the background. I’m not sure if it was the same one watching the cows as was previously trying to figure out how to get a closer look at the bird in the bird house. I was secretly hoping he wouldn’t jump up there but if he did get up there, all he’d want to do is sniff them. Don’t you just love how your vocabulary is growing, because I would have said filler rocks too. Well enjoy the secret digging and if you find anything cool please share! See ya next Saturday.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +2

      Aww it’s so lovely to be able to speak to them, they piece together little things that are puzzling us and it’s so helpful and also it means we get to find out as much as we can about the history of the house and land. It’s great. The picture is the icing on the cake, to be able to see what it all looked like back then. Oh they really are pleased and amazed at what we’ve done so far.
      Alan was watching the cows and it peaches who was watching the birds (naughty girl!) She’s the only one who is a pain with those. We have a water sprayer at the ready for when she gets near there, and now she knows if the sprayer is picked up she is on her way out of there! 🤣 Steve sometimes has a sit and watch but Alan hasn’t paid any attention to them, he prefers cows and dogs! 😮🫣
      Oh we have so many more new words than we started out, I have done so much reading and watching on stone buildings and stone walls, I like to learn as much as I possibly can before I start anything. Ben’s more of a get on with it and figure it out as you go, I like to figure it out before I go! 🤣 it calms my mind to be prepared!
      We most certainly will share if we find good things from the digging 😊❤️ See you next Saturday!

      Haha he’s great isn’t he? Back in England Lukas worked at an aquatics shop and the heron was going to be thrown away as it’s a bit broken and it doesn’t stand so well and spends most of the time either legless or lying down but once we get some sort of pond going he can have pride of place!

    I remember the day that a man came around selling those arial photos. They were all printed off in a little folder, but he was looking for maybe 100 euro or the like for it. Dad was furious at the cost and said he had no interest in buying the photo. A couple house later when I was cycling on my bike I found the photo down the road flung in the ditch, so we ended up with it anyway for free🤣
    Yours is a great one though because it really shows the extent of the buildings around, how lovely. This is a really exciting project, I can't wait to see it develop, well done 💪

      Awww wow! It was clearly meant to be for you to have the picture! I believe in fate and how things are meant to be or not! It’s a lovely photo to have, I know you can see images nowadays on Google earth but their never quite close enough or old enough are they, or not for this area, to see how everything has changed over time. So to be able to see it how it was back then is quite amazing!
      We’re very excited to get going on it and get that roof back on…it’s quite handy as we have videos we can watch of a couple we “know” on how to do it all 😉 ❤️

    Hi Dawn and Ben, what a mammoth task, clearing and sorting all the wood and the stones, funny how it looks like twice the amount when you got it all out of there. You will be so happy that you went to that bother when you need a piece of wood of the correct size for a job and can go out and just pick it up without shifting stuff to get to it. Sorting the stones into sizes must have been back breaking too. There is no stopping you two once you get going on a task. So looking forward to the main task beginning next week, here's hoping the weather plays ball for you xx Just 'cos I like to put my tuppence worth in after watching the vids, does not mean you have to reply each time, with the amount of work you have and the amount of subscribers, that is becoming a full time job on its own.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Of course we have to reply. You have taken your time to watch and comment so we like to always take our time to reply to you, but thank you for thinking of us.
      You are so right with the wood being sorted, until uncovering it, we had actually forgotten what we had and how much of it. Doing other jobs now will be a lot easier as before we just sighed and said "it's in the outbuilding under the tarp" and it never got done.
      I have a confession with the stone sorted.... we have two piles at the moment, massive and everything else lol. But the everything else pile is much tidier than it was. I will get to sorting them properly though to make it easier.
      Fingers crossed we will get the weather but a bit of rain won't hurt in the least, we always need some rain at our house.
      Thank you so much Ellen for always giving your tuppence worth, we always like reading and replying :-) Have a lovely week.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello again 😊 we did ask and the only drainage she remembers is the one we call the alley that runs between the two buildings that took the water from around the house into the ditch. The back of the outbuildings had always looks like it did for her and she’s never seen the drainage that we’ve uncovered recently. So I would say it’s been hidden for a very long time.

It was all treated to saturation before it was stored away but the little blighters still came out! So much easier to get to it now it is all organised properly and accessible. Just need the outbuilding sorted for storage once the roof is back on and we’re good to go then. Hi Jay
      We plan on taking it down to the bottom of the window, but now we can get into the building properly to inspect it, it is possible we may only have to go down to the top of the window lintel and be able to repoint as needed below that. But we will see how it goes when we start taking the top down. The quoin stones are in good shape, it is just everything after that haha. We have so many stones we will be able to pick and choose as we go to make sure we use enough through stones to give the wall it's strength back. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan Jay. We will let you know.
      Thank you so much for your input, it is all helpful :-)

Mowing just makes it look neat and tidy without anything else being done. Fingers crossed with enough regular mowing we can encourage the grass back too. Hi Dawn & Ben.

      We are chuffed with the Great Tits nesting in that box. Dawn's Dad made and calved it. Each day we would see birds popping in and having a look and then not going back. So to see the Tits return day after day was really nice. We think they have chicks as both mum and dad fly in and out with food all day long.
      The weather cock was a present from Dawn long ago and now needs a coat of paint. Once the roof is on the outbuilding I am hoping to fit it up there. Not the best place as it is shielded but the house from the wind, but it should still look nice.

    Nice to see you again. Here in Canada, it's the "May Two-Four". The 3rd Monday of May is Victoria Day which is a holiday in honour of Queen Victoria. It's the unofficial start of summer in Canada and the weekend when gardens get planted because there is almost zero chance of frost. We call it the "May Two-Four" because the most common case of beer purchased this weekend contains 24 bottles of beer :)
    Looking forward to this phase of the project. My comments and suggestions will be minimal since my expertise in working with stone and mortar is limited to watching Dan on Escape to Rural France. One suggestion would be to practice with a couple of minor repairs in a less damaged area before you tackle that badly damaged corner.
    Best regards and keep your fingers and toes safe when handling the larger stones.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi John, pretty much zero chance of frost sounds like a winner to us. If it is the unofficial start of summer, when is the "real" start of summer? Love the name of it. And will you be planting up the garden or just taking part in making the 24 bottles less? haha
      Well Dan is how we knew we could do it, well, certainly the joists with the method he used. From buying this house Dawn has watched days and days worth of videos to do with lime mortar and last year put it to good use with the joists and repairs on the stones where needed, as you will remember. We also now have a lovely growing collection of books from old buildings to stone walls and everything in between including a book all about lime.
      You know us, in for a penny, in for a pound. Fingers and toes will be looked after as much as possible.
      As ever, thank you John. Have a lovely May Two-Four :-)

We will see though.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому

      Hi Heather, thanks for watching and commenting.
      Yes, it is a brilliant grant but does come with some hurdles we which decided we wouldn't bother jumping. Our miniscule budget meant we wouldn't have been able to reach the required level of renovation within the time period. You have to have everything done to their standards and paid for all up front before they will pay you back. So although 70k would be nice, in affect you have to have it to spend in the first place.
      Not going for the grant has also worked as an advantage though as we are 100% free to spend time doing what we do and when we do it, spending on things when we can and don't have any time constraints.
      Thanks for taking the time to comment.

    I’d be more worried about the wall falling, not the pile of wood. I think you need to rebuild wall from outside to help stabilize the wall to then take out the wood and work on the inside of the wall. Not judging, just from watching stone wall repairs. Especially that corner of the building. Who is J M carving on the stone? Love the pic from the air.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Oh we were worried about that too but if all the timber falls it’s hard to get anywhere near the wall when it’s all over the floor of the building. Luckily neither of those things happened 😉 we also have/had a big pile of soil and roots and a large tree stump behind the wall that was stopping us getting to fix the wall from outside. We’re getting there with it all now though…just a long process before we get to do any repairs. J M is the previous owner and when the roof fell in this piece of concrete capping was swinging off the edge of the building. It’s says “J M 1936”
      Thank you, yes it’s been so handy and lovely to be able to have aerial shots of the buildings and area. 😊

    Question?are you going to put a door on either side of the building?

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi Maria, we may have double doors to take advantage of the wide opening, but it wasn't this way originally, it used to be only 3ft wide. The stone in the ground is worn down from the feet of people and animals in and out. So it is possible we may rebuild it to just 3ft wide, but it would be at the cost of nice wide doors.

    When do you think you will be back in the house renovating?

      Hi Pat.
      There are loads of jobs which need doing, like the plaster being removed as needed from the wall before being re-plastered, a kitchen a living room ceiling to be fitted and so many more jobs inside. Until we can get this building fixed though it is hard to work in the house when living in it at the same time as there is nowhere to put the stuff for the large jobs which needs a room cleared. Also the weather is amazing at the moment, it seems we chose the best time to be repairing the outbuilding.

    That girl is an Amazon. Are you sure she is not a Yorkshire woman?. Didn't think they built girls from Kent like that. Builds walls and looks good. Having said that I would not change my girl she has her qualities too. My shirts are always ironed, great cook and she looks good on my arm.

      Hahaha thank you! 😁 The girls from Kent are much tougher than you would think…well at least from our family anyway! 😂 I think my dad wanted boys! He got…..4 girls! 🤣😉 I do however old my hands up and say I never iron! Never have. Everything else but no ironing.

    Hey Ben why does it always look like Dawn is doin all the heavy work lol just kiddin bys you guys never stop always movin forward won't be long it'll be done,

      Hahaha you noticed that, I have it down to a fine art now. If there is work to be done I show willing, if it is heavy work, Dawn does it hahaha. Seriously though, although I am only 5'6", Dawn's height at 5'0" is her only downfall as sometimes she just isn't quite tall enough for some things, like swinging the big timbers around and up and over the wall before going out the window. But she does seem to do a lot more work than I do.
      Hopefully this week we will get to make a start, although thunderstorms are due up here tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday, so we will have to keep our fingers crossed we can get out the at some point.
      Thank you Billy for watching and commenting :-)

      Hi Diana…we had a little hitch with Ben’s laptop playing up 🫣 We stuck a community post out last night as a heads up to let people know it’ll be out today instead 😊 It’s all ready to go for later on. We’re absolutely fine…usual aches and pains but not worn out just yet 😂

    I started my viewing somewhere in the middle and am finding it difficult to start from the beginning. Am I missing it, or does it not exist that you have a chronological list from the beginning? Would love to watch the progress from day one. I’m a hard worker but y’all make me look like a slacker😜 Janice from Mississippi in the US.

      Oh it really does! We can’t believe how quickly this almost a year has gone by! Hopefully the next coming year goes by a little slower, so we can pack a bit more into it! 😂
      Thank you and you’re completely right because this is our life and what we are doing and we prefer what we post to be how our life really goes rather than led by UA-cam views if you see what I mean? ❤️
