Jaw-dropping stuff. To have reached that level of technical proficiency, *and* to have such sophisticated harmonic understanding, *and* to be able to swing, *and* to have assimilated the style, *and* to have the confidence to improvise, not only at such a young age, but to have accomplished all that in just a few short years (according to the story on _The World_, he started playing at six, and "got serious" at seven)... Beyond remarkable.

rloomis3 You said it ! Its the maturity of the constructions he is achieving ! I would love to hear him working a Beethoven Sonata - ......I think I am going to make a Barbecue from my violin ! Probably be the best sound its produced in years !

+JOE SMITH It's funny. I always make jokes after seeing bands like Snarky Puppy and wanting to set my drums on fire to heat my house. That said...This kid is a staggering example of what human musical evolution is and how underrated it is. His understanding of time alone, is unbelievably mature. Exploring harmonics like that, at his age, seems downright scary. I became a fan recently. I look forward to watching him grow. I'm glad he'll do it in the jazz world, as opposed to any other form of entertainment.

A perfect example of raw talent. My personal experience with this type of talent was playing with Larry Carlton, jazz guitarist, when he was 14. He was, at that time, studing under guitar legend Joe Pass. I played with Larry for several years and I was never confused as to who was the very best musician when we hit the stage.

The first time I heard "My Favourite Things" was from "The Sound of Music," many years ago. A few days ago, it was "Sakamichi no Apollon" ("Kids On The Slope") with its jazzy take on the original source. Earlier today, it was Coltrane's take, and *right now*, I'm listening to this boy's version.
I must say that it really is quite a good rendition, and the improvisation rocks, too.

  • @mottiengnhat8921

I think the fact that he is 11 (or 12 now) is the most deceiving fact for anyone trying to redo this piece with the mindset that if a child could rearrange a song like this then i could also, and after an hour fighting with the piano they just collapse realising that it was done by an old jazz soul disguised as an 11 y.o boy, for example, me.
