The famed show tune My Favorite Things from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The Sound of Music" was transformed into a classic jazz recording by the John Coltrane Quartet on their 1961 album "My Favorite Things".
Master jazz drummer Elvin Jones, a mainstay in the Coltrane Quartet and a feature on this album, later hired ELEW to play in his own band the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine around 30+ years later.

It’s takes hours to prepare these videos for y’all but it literally takes a second to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to show your support and help get this channel to more people !
John, Elvin, and Tyner still live though these young men. Beautiful take on an all time music tune.
allan mednard TORE IT UP here. such a sense of melody to his phrasing and he synergizes so well with the other two. sometimes i watch a jazz performance and just get my mind blown apart by a drummer, this is definitely one of those videos
also props to whoever put the camera right on him, its a blessing to have such a front row seat to the magic
Great energy here. Trane would be smiling.
🙌
trane would hire eric)
hearing contrane after this; I kind of realize they were holding to record something polite,(Contrane), he would be fucking proud and in defiance, propably on the back stage waiting to put some sax in this chord massacreition hahahahah
@@erickdaves1466 have you heard 'Trane's live versions of this tune from 1966-67? They are absolutely brutal free jazz explosions of Pharaoh Sanders' screaming saxophone, Alice Coltrane's dissonant comping, and Rashied Ali's rhythmically liberated drumming. I recommend the version from "Live at The Village Vanguard Again!"
Train would be smiling, I’m pretty sure Rogers & Hammerstein would be smiling of this rendition
This is my favorite jazz song ever. I've literally listened to it thousands of times, including all of Coltlrane's live versions. This performance was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Very much in the spirit of Coltrane's live performances of the song. The most amazing thing to me is the level of intensity that is maintained throughout the entire song. It's like everyone is soloing, at the same time, for most of the song. If I'm ever in New York, I'm going to try to find this group. If they ever come to southern California I will definitely try to catch their show. I don't think there are many groups that can do what they did with this song!
❤
Same here!!!
Hard for me to find the words for how this performance made me feel...This was otherworldly. Hats off to the pianist and bassist but especially to the drummer! My favorite things is probably my favorite Coltrane song and this is by far my favorite performance of this song I've seen.
Round xmas this is one of the few tolerable songs played at work but it's always the most pedestrian lifeless version. This was exactly nothing like that. This reminded me why I like jazz.
Where do you work that plays this kind of music? Damn.
@@Coastpsych_fi99 Grocery. I said they play this song not this lind of music.
Great work guys. You have encaptured the feeling and the vision of this song, original and Coltrane's. Maybe the truth and peace was found at the end
Oh man, you can really feel the bass at 3:39. Amazing performance!
ᵇᵃˢˢ
Elvin would be proud of this drummer
The drums were tight the two handed technique was fantastic each one working tandem, and the bass was on point. Great job
An unabashedly brash and aggressive take on the classic. Love it!

Drummer's playing is so delicate, enjoyed the video a lot, thank you
Incredible trio !!!
They went hard on this song. Love the energy
Beautiful rendition. I have heard a lot of people play this song from the 1960s with Trane but for 3 musicians to fill this song up with the energy and feeling it amazing. Definitely got saved.

ew
Like you, Harry, I love this.
But, Man, it's all real music...even the shit we don't like...imo.
@@ZOOTSUITBEATNICK1 Today's music is autotune, virtual instruments and stupid lyrics as a bonus. Nothing real lol.
@@Alkatribe When I was a kid, people who said things like you did in your comment seemed ancient to me.
I'm 79 and it still sounds ancient.
Instruments, computers, effects, et al don't make music...music is made in the minds of people.
Instruments are just tools.
Try fewer limits instead of more.
@@Alkatribe If you're still living under the stereotype that modern music is like that, your ignorance and laziness of a music listener shows. If you took one second to go out and find music that is "real" you'd find so much. And even the stuff that's made autotune, electronic instruments, that can sound good too imo. You just don't like change or evolution.
God damn this goes so hard
Insane. Best rendition of this tune I've ever listened to. So inspiring guys.
