A sensible approach would be to do the following: Collect over time enough models which enable you to play DIFFERENT play styles. Why is this important? Well, if you always play for example a gunline IF force with the same models things get boring fast and even your buddy will be able to recall your own list flawlessly. This doesn´t need to be. Instead of making a mistake such as starting another legion altogether in order to play in a different manner just expand your IF force with other units which allow you to play more aggressively. This obviously applies to all other legions as well. Remember these are space marines and not Orks from 40K. You can do melee, ranged or a mix. The fun thing is you can catch your opponent off-guard, if he expects a traditional legion force. Another method to make an army is to choose a specific scenario and build the list accordingly. You have a couple of bunkers, minefields, razor wire, fortifications in your terrain collection? Fine. Now you are able to field artillery pieces which profit from proper cover saves from the getgo and the opponent can unleash all models suitable for breaching fortifications.
This is what I've been doing. I was already building a SOH and NL HH army and started with Armor and special squads and characters first. The Box set is going to essentially finish both of them adding in a Kratos and few Rhinos.

Planning on Imperial Fists, gonna see how deep striking Melta Termies can do in the new edition. Probably overcosted and better used with other fun stuff, but it's a thought
Considering that combi meltas are one-use only and deep strike can eff you in the butt with bad rolls, it's probably better to consider tactical support squads with rhinos for similar punch at much lower cost, at the detriment that it can't quite get to melta range of backline stuff as easily- But normal termies still have, you know, power fists for those pesky artillery units.

But really, there should be some substantial mention of a Consul. I think finding a consul you think is cool and then building it is one of the more fun things you can do to start an army. Praetors are *good,* but they're also *boring.* They're melee beatstick units that are good at that but don't introduce any fun ideas beyond point and click. Masters of Signal, Librarians, Chaplains, Heralds, they all open up interesting new options with what you can do or what your units are capable of.
First question for Horus Heresy: What Legion do I want to play? If it's a Legion that prefers fast and/or melee heavy than this set wouldn't be the best choice. Nice! Love the Fallen lore in 40k. Make sure you pick units that work in both systems! Small support squads, whose weapons can be shared out to chaos space marine units in 40k are the way to go.
"Ain't no one splitting this box" Good thing for me that one of the local players only wanted the plastic spartan then. Getting another contemptor and the terminators from the set from his box 😁
I am thinking of splitting the box in two armies. one as sons of horus and the other as spacewolves. I still have not painted the betrayal of calth boxset from a couple of years back. And I have kitbashed a legion command unit aswell. I think that will be a good start for both armies.
I want to build four armies off of the starter. 30 of the 40 MKVIs will be customized with the FW Dark Angels, Alpha Legion, and Word Bearers. The final 10 will remain vanilla for the Emperor.
Worth mentioning. So far, obviously testing will reveal more, the special and heavy weapons packs are designed for the Mk-6 Beaky's, I plan to save all of the starter box Beaky's for that, at least until I know if the older Mk (4-5) plastic boxes due for release can or can be relatively easily given the new special/heavy weapon options. Might make my legion detachment 'look' odd with all the Beaky's special geared and lots of older armour bolter troops - but building on a budget. Also it can be explained by saying the special and heavy weapons were prioritised with the newest shiny armour.
Ha ha, yeah it's a bit awkward. SURELY they could have made the kits usable for all types of armour. How hard would it have been?! Ooooh well. My advice. 3D print those bad boys!

I'm most likely going to do 2 squads of mk 6 all armed with volkite and the other 2 I will probably try to convert into praetorian breachers via 3d printing. Definitely getting the Kratos and a rhino (might get more later) will definitely get a leviathan and sicairan as well in the future I might get some invictarus Suzerians and maybe Rowboat Girlyman himself
I will build a Night Lords army with lots of Raptors and Terror units. Space pirates need to hit hard and fast. I also have MKIII on order for more of the retro look.
I'm new to HH and already preordered a special weapon box, but I'm having trouble deciding if I should make 5 man or 10 man squads, and which weapons to chose. At the moment I'm thinking a 5 man melta squad and a 10 man plasma or rotor canon squad, but I'm really not sure. I'm going to play Emperor's Children. For my normal bolter marines I also preordered some MKIV marines.
It might be worth it to wait and see how the rules for your legion look. If you’re eager to paint up your boys as soon as you get them, then painting the arms/guns separately is always an option.
You can't go wrong with plasma and melta. Small squads are a nuisance for your opponent and easy to hide. Big squads can take some casualties and still be a serious threat. Pros and cons to each 😊
I've been lucky enough to have someone who wanted to downsize their backlog sell me a bunch of unbuilt resin marines they didn't want anymore, so I'm gonna probably avoid the starter set since I've already got 30 Mk2 and 15 of each of Mk3-6! Hopefully the new plastic upgrades work on them though 😅 Biggest problem is still deciding on my Legion lollll, still, narrowed down to Iron Hands, World Eaters, Death Guard, Salamanders, Night Lords and White Scars! Want to be defensive and shoot while slowly approaching and then melee everything that remains >:)
@@blackbriargaming5483 I have! Thats how I narrowed it down to these ones lol. I've never painted or played before so I basically just tried to narrow down based on lore and looks and what I think I'll enjoy playing. Also waiting until I know what my local scene is going to be playing before I fully decide, and is also why I'm not really considering Imperial Fists or Sons of Horus, because them being on the box means I'm sure they'll be really popular hah.
For sure! You want chain axes on EVERYTHING! 😋 But don't forget World Eaters were still packing the full range of units and weapons. But. Also. Chainaxes...
Going to start with this AoD box and paint them as Raven Guard. I appreciate the overview video and will refer back to this as I make progress. I've got a Fire Raptor already (unassembled), so I'll put that together once the box set is ready to go. Don't *quite* know what I'll do with those 40 marines... I got the special weapons box but held off on the heavy weapons for the same reasons you explained; I suspected that I'd likely prefer one of the later heavy weapon types. Don't know if I should be doing 10-man or 20-man tactical squads, using some of these for special/heavy weapon squads... etc. Maybe a couple 5-man special weapon squads, a 10-man tac squad and a 20-man squad? How does that sound?
Idk why but this video kind of made me question getting into Horus Heresy 😅 I think it’s probably just cause it’s a whole army all at once so it seems like a lot more.
I decided on going with Night Lords because i wanted to sit and do some converting and kitbashing for the army to make them usable in both HH and as CSM in 40k, and I got a *lot* of chainswords and jump packs ready to go for half the beakies, so I don't know if I'd be grabbing any of the weapon upgrade sprues since I'm going to be sitting on like 20 Night Raptors/assault marines on jump packs. Would i still want a special/heavy weapon squad along with that, or should i stick with the tacticals?
Having a special squad with NL is probably a good idea. You can grab the Contekar kit from FW or use the 10 Cataphractii Terminators in the box set if you're getting it to make the Atrementar. A Raptor Destroyer squad probably wouldn't hurt either.
Your combat squads are great at taking out marines, maybe some meltas to instant death termies and deal with contemptors. Lascannons do it better when they come out 😊
@@blackbriargaming5483 20 raptors/assault squads w jump packs (raptors would have to be split into squads of 10) and then 10 Meltas and 10 las canons and just buy another box of marines to have some amount of foot sloggers. Probably going to run double contemptors too, and I'll make sure there's some anti-tank on there as well. Throw in Sevatar for my "fun" choice, and a jet pack equiped preator to fling around with the raptor squads will definitely get me to 3k with minimal purchases after the box set for something a bit flavorful, haha... only really missing something tough, but will probably get a leviathan since NL have one of the few special ones. Really excited for HH can't stop thinking about how I will run my army in a way that feels flavorful and fits the more custom lore I've brewed up for my company.
I’m lucky ☺️ I play for lore so emperors children elite infantry heavy. Only got 40 marines and a captain to start. The new box set is amazing ! But most start at £99 in the past ! In the middle of a cost of living crises £180 is massive. Would be nice to see a tale of 4 gamers type thing £50 start and £30 a month then on
I found this video very helpful thank you. I'm choosing the Alpha legion and would love any advice towards building a decent force of them before all the fancy stuff :)
So if I wanted a Heresy Salamanders army, I would do something like: get the core box, buy the special weapons sprue box, four Deimos Rhinos, 10 of the FW Salamander Terminators (because they get 3++) and 10 Pyroclasts, and wait for plastic assault squads, Predators and the Drill? And then figure out things like HQs and apothecaries once stuff is painted and I've played a few games? Given Salamanders are all about melta, flamers and being suicidally heroic, I'd assume they probably want to be mechanized to get into range fast.
I know very little about 30k, but trying to get my own death guard army set up. I passed on the box set and got morty, deathshroud termies, and the deathguard contemptor dread. Waiting on more mark 3 or 4 marines, and currently a bit confused on how to build a praetor
@@juliancalero8012 I just keep seeing people talking about building them with different sets of terminator armor, like tartaros instead of cataphractii. Wasn't sure how to do that, I see that forgeworld mentions some terminator/weapon upgrades, but don't seem to see them available anymore.
@@juliancalero8012 okay, after reading through a few things I think I have a better understanding. I was just curious how people were getting different terminator armor loadouts. looks like people are converting from other models
Legion specific builds coming soon! To get access to different armour, you need to buy the specific model. Cataphractii is bulkier. Tartaros is rounder. You'll find most Praetors come in the former, mostly cause it looks cooler 😅
I am a Kill team player with already 3 different Marine teams and this set has me even concidering making a 4th marine team with the Beakies. Hahah I have Deathwatch (Isstvan III Loyalists in Mark III armour) Compendium Chaos (Alpha Legion made from Current Chaos Marine Kits) Legionaries (Word Bearers, Made from the Nachmund box set) I don't Know what else I would build if I was going to make a 4th team just to get/use some of the beakies considering I have a full 20 model roster for 2/3 of my teams and only my Legionaries are less at 16) so I don't even need to fill any roster slots.
I had to use 3d Printing to have some Breacher shields printed up for my MK III dudes in two cases (Emperors Children Sargent with Shield and Power weapon (Xenophase counts as)) and a Shield and bolter guy who was legal in KT2018 but is not legal in KT2021 so he and my World Eaters Assault Sargent with Twin chainswords "Husq" and "Varna" have to sit asside for now.
So I don't have access to the Libers yet, but we'll know soon! From the playtest we can guess it'll be something like S5, Rending (5+), Sniper and Pinning. And a loooooong range.
The answers will all want! :P I believe we will see release in between now and... October... You're welcome. And it looks like the Siege Drill is coming with the kit!
You totally can! Smaller games are just as much fun. My points recommendations are aimed at taking your army to casual tournaments, which are often at the 3000point mark.
Planning on creating an army of the III’rd…. Obviously. Perhaps a smaller alpha legion army, and some war bands of some others (world eaters, raven guard and iron warriors).
so the models of Leviathan dreadnought plastic? where is it? cant find it on gw site .. its just forgeworld? and same for some unique legion specific minis.. we have to buy from forgeworld?
New to Horus Heresy/30k. Going Dark Angels because I love the Knightly aesthetic but I’m most likely not going to make any changes to the starter box and wondering if that’s unwise. I was thinking of leaving the 2 praetors as is, 40 marines with bolters and bayonets, 2 terminators with power swords, 2 with dual claws, 2 with chainfists, 4 with power fists, then equip contemptor with twin linked heavy bolter and power fist, spartan assault tank with lascannon sponsons. Is this fine for covering all the bases? Do I need something more shooty than the Spartan? I will get the primarch eventually for my fun miniature. Like I said I’m new and have no idea what I’m doing and don’t wanna cost myself hundreds of dollars on small mistakes
Dark Angels will get their own Legion specific Build video, but unfortunately not for a while. I'm going in reverse order. Though may be swayed to cheat if the angst is loud enough. Lol. Spartan's are awkward beasts. you want them to be surging forward to deliver their payload. Which means they're not taking advantage of their shooting. I'd recommend a dedicated tank hunting unit. Either a tactical (melta guns) or heavy support squad (lascannons), or a squadron (2 should do it) of vindicators or predators.
Completely new to it. But can I buy the box set an build the whole range for ultramarines? Or does it need to be split. I don’t know if it’s like the box set were it’s one army vs a different like most 40k box sets
Definitely! You can't go wrong with a unit of plasma guns and a unit of metal guns. Either 5 or 10, to absorb some casualties. Legion specific builds coming soon 😊
which legion do you think has the best tactics abilities i was going to make dark angels so can use in both 30 and 40 k but i was also thinking ultras and or world eaters for something different.
You want to build a LEGION? You'll need about one to two thousand of the starter boxes to start with. Plus a few thousand of each other 30k squad forgeworld has both general and specific tp your legion. And then you need few thousand of each vehicle. That gives you anywhere between 100-150 thousand marines. It'a a good start for a proper legion.
My issue is wanting to start but Mark VI only being available in the larger scale. Wanted to do Death Guard but MK VI just doesn't fit. Alpha Legion and Raven Guard are the only real options, and as someone who loves the lore, I can't stomach the idea of every legion on the table top being in MK VI. I really hope they upscale the other armour sets but it's not going to happen is it.
I'm going ultramarines. Im converting half my mk 6 marines to look more Roman and I am going to go all out on mk 4. Death guard and mk 6 do not make much sense together lore wise
It's a very small difference overall. If the height is bugging you, a decent blob of greenstuff in the hip joint should be able to make up the difference. Just attach it as a superglue sandwich - legs, superglue, greenstuff, superglue, torso, squish it together.
the most annoying thing to this kit and system, is the lack of customizing. with 40k you can paint models how you want. mostly pose and m&M kits to make newer units (like space wolf parts to make unique assault squads for say smurfs) going in to HH you really cant make special paints since its designed to be before the whole 2nd+ foundings. i mean the game mode would be super fun but i personally like having my own paint scheme and "lore" but now my own personal IF from 3rd/4th ed wouldnt work in HH cause they dont follow the actual IF colours. as well this system is kinda limited its almost like GW is trying to milk you on their models now, since for the most part HH units wouldnt be 100% compatible with 40k and visa/versa SO you wind up buying 2 armies if you wanna play 30k and 40k. even if you are playing smurfs or something very basic themed. mind you the kits HH is getting makes me jealous cause so many kits would have been soo nice back in 2nd or 3rd ED when 1-2 metal blisters were a thing ~cough metal cadian/catachan cough~
Well, you don't have to paint them up in legion standard colors, since there are points when smaller bands of marines changed sides or had insular groups. From what I can tell these models can mostly be run in 30 or 40k
@@bornstellareternal but if you are making a Sons of horus or even word eaters, you cant just paint them up willynilly for a 30k army since those armies use a set pallet as well you do not have sub founding chapters. so if you are going to collect a HH army, you dont have the customizing options for ultramar units or subfounding chapters. good example you can not run crimsons or templar. since they come from the post HH legion splits and never existed during HH. as well if you want to make pennant crusade chapters like the post HH loyal thousand sons ect you cant as HH is taking place during the start/actual events of the HH and not after. for example my own personal imperial fists are designed both in build and paint as a crusade army post HH (rip Dorn) i would not "legally" be able to run them in a HH army since they wont have the actual IF colours ( i know they can run as prox but honestly proxing sucks) long story short i feel like the HH system while looks interesting is also VERY limited on scope :( since you really can not customize like you can in the main 40k armies. (a billion chaos undivided armies in design and colour but unusable in HH) ultramarines are only blue. as they is no codex or "curse" foundings during the HH
@@2LTDarcius There are hundreds of thousands of Space Marines running around, various stages of Chaos corruption or loyalty to the Lectitio Divinatatus, you totally CAN be creative. If someone brings up how "there wasn't crimson fists" or "World Eaters hated the Beakie armor" is just not clever enough to figure out a solution to make their paint scheme reasonable.
All primarchs should be dead to make people like valrak angry. I just want to see space marines kill each other and then play the narrative, which means primarchs won't be in most battles
Devastating! Luckily you can totally play games at smaller points levels. Especially with mates. I actually prefer smaller (1000 to 1500 points) games cause the choices are just so much more impactful!
Why anchor yourself to a Primarch for narrative games when you can create your own story with "Your Dudes"? Unless your going for a tournament, get approval from your opponent to use something from the Liber Centura or Liber Panoptica (Units that fans made that FW + GW forgot), get a Praetor or Centurion with a rich backstory of your own. Make a Company/Chapter of your own, run narratives/rivalries of your dudes and other people's dudes. Don't get bogged down by Black Library's Mediocre writers working with a Above-Average setting, and all the baggage using a Primarch is associated with. Make it your own.
Also waiting until I know what my local scene is going to be playing before I fully decide, and is also why I'm not really considering Imperial Fists or Sons of Horus, because them being on the box means I'm sure they'll be really popular hah.
Sat here waiting as a world eaters player for the close combat options to come out and jump packs before i build my marines
Keep up the content
You know i will 😁
Idk why but this video kind of made me question getting into Horus Heresy 😅 I think it’s probably just cause it’s a whole army all at once so it seems like a lot more.
Just take it one squad at a time. 1000pt games are just as much fun as 3000pt games! 😁
@@blackbriargaming5483 thank you, that’s very reassuring!
Would be nice to see a tale of 4 gamers type thing £50 start and £30 a month then on
Or even £50 dam expensive hobby lol 😂
I also don't see you talking about Scouts.
Scouts with Sniper Rifles, and Scout squads with a heavy weapon will be good for fire and effect.
I'm just not a fan of the models in 30k hey...
I want to split that box and i need some ideas how to do that
I found this video very helpful thank you. I'm choosing the Alpha legion and would love any advice towards building a decent force of them before all the fancy stuff :)
Definitely! It will be coming. Trying to work out how deep to go and how to group the Legions for those deep dives.
Or go full drop pod?? Your plan sounds solid though!
Do you know about an alternate Forge World model source called Recasting? It's quite popular as much cheaper.
I know very little about 30k, but trying to get my own death guard army set up. I passed on the box set and got morty, deathshroud termies, and the deathguard contemptor dread. Waiting on more mark 3 or 4 marines, and currently a bit confused on how to build a praetor
what kind of praetor do you want, it's basically a captain with more options
@@juliancalero8012 I just keep seeing people talking about building them with different sets of terminator armor, like tartaros instead of cataphractii. Wasn't sure how to do that, I see that forgeworld mentions some terminator/weapon upgrades, but don't seem to see them available anymore.
@@mikemccoy7931 do you at lest know the rough loadout you want to run him as
@@juliancalero8012 okay, after reading through a few things I think I have a better understanding.
Sweet. Got a box on order planning Emporers Children. Any tips on what i should add from forge works for those boys?
Does the box set have enough models to have 4 different legions instead of 2?
What do you mean by no one is splitting the box?
I am a Kill team player with already 3 different Marine teams and this set has me even concidering making a 4th marine team with the Beakies.
Hahah
I have Deathwatch (Isstvan III Loyalists in Mark III armour)
Compendium Chaos (Alpha Legion made from Current Chaos Marine Kits)
Legionaries (Word Bearers, Made from the Nachmund box set)
I don't Know what else I would build if I was going to make a 4th team just to get/use some of the beakies considering I have a full 20 model roster for 2/3 of my teams and only my Legionaries are less at 16) so I don't even need to fill any roster slots.
I'm getting into world eaters with the New box and I think the shooty option will be Volkite for me 😎, but I hesitate between chargers and rifles
Volkite is just so iconic 30k. Why not both?! 😁
@@blackbriargaming5483 isnt it too much to put 20 volkite out of the 40 beakies ? 😅
@@Amras22520 look, it kinda is... but also... CHOOOOM!!!
Hey can you tell me what the nemesis bolters do?great channel bruh👌
So I don't have access to the Libers yet, but we'll know soon! From the playtest we can guess it'll be something like S5, Rending (5+), Sniper and Pinning. And a loooooong range.
And thanks!
Are there two different Heavy Weapons set kits?
Need to know for the Devastator/ Heavy Weapons squads.
Pretty sure there will be three!
Woo!
We need jumppacks for the mk6 so bad.
- every new hh blood angels player
I want to do White Scars but there's just no way unless they make jetbikes in plastic
Also waiting to get mk 2 armor In plastic would also make sense because white scars were mostly mk 2
The leviathan
1) when is it being released
2) I want the siege drill. Will it kitbash with the forge world weapons?
The answers will all want! :P I believe we will see release in between now and... October... You're welcome. And it looks like the Siege Drill is coming with the kit!
Love to see a emperors children how to build a legion.
All in good time :D
'Ain't no one splitting the box'
I am with my buddy.
Can we play with the box split?
You totally can! Smaller games are just as much fun. My points recommendations are aimed at taking your army to casual tournaments, which are often at the 3000point mark.
Those marines with shields.. Do they come in plastic? Are they kitbash??
FW breachers, and plenty of great conversions and alternative kits out there. I expect they will come in plastic. But not yet.
Planning on creating an army of the III’rd…. Obviously. Perhaps a smaller alpha legion army, and some war bands of some others (world eaters, raven guard and iron warriors).
I'm right there with you with the III Legion, though I won't be painting them myself. I'll be too busy wit my new Alphas... I like the way you think.
so the models of Leviathan dreadnought plastic? where is it? cant find it on gw site .. its just forgeworld? and same for some unique legion specific minis.. we have to buy from forgeworld?
Coming soon! Not out yet I'm afraid. But announced.
@@blackbriargaming5483 ok thank you. hopefuly this year
New to Horus Heresy/30k.
@@blackbriargaming5483 thank you, I look forward to the video!
Completely new to it. But can I buy the box set an build the whole range for ultramarines? Or does it need to be split. I don’t know if it’s like the box set were it’s one army vs a different like most 40k box sets
You can definitely use all models for a single army 😊
@@blackbriargaming5483 alright thank you
Which box set is this?
Is the Deredeo Dreadnought any good?
Sure is!!
I’m going to be going alpha legion, I think I need some special weapons stuff but I’m not sure
Definitely! You can't go wrong with a unit of plasma guns and a unit of metal guns. Either 5 or 10, to absorb some casualties. Legion specific builds coming soon 😊
@@blackbriargaming5483 awesome! I’ve been loving your videos you really convinced me to finally get into 30k
@@Kaanfight that's so awesome to hear!! 😊
which legion do you think has the best tactics abilities i was going to make dark angels so can use in both 30 and 40 k but i was also thinking ultras and or world eaters for something different.
So from my assumption on what you mean by tactics, I reckon Ultramarines might be the way to go. Their rules are REALLY interesting.
Hey, I'm splitting the box lol 😂
Well this is awkward :P
That heavy kit doesn't seem available?
Only the missile launcher pack is available. The las canon pack has not been released yet
Yeah we'll have to wait for it
You want to build a LEGION?
I got a thing for Terminator so I guess I'm going to be a son of Horus
Check out Pride of the Legion RoW too 😊
Pyroclasts then?
the most annoying thing to this kit and system, is the lack of customizing. with 40k you can paint models how you want. mostly pose and m&M kits to make newer units (like space wolf parts to make unique assault squads for say smurfs) going in to HH you really cant make special paints since its designed to be before the whole 2nd+ foundings. i mean the game mode would be super fun but i personally like having my own paint scheme and "lore" but now my own personal IF from 3rd/4th ed wouldnt work in HH cause they dont follow the actual IF colours. as well this system is kinda limited its almost like GW is trying to milk you on their models now, since for the most part HH units wouldnt be 100% compatible with 40k and visa/versa SO you wind up buying 2 armies if you wanna play 30k and 40k. even if you are playing smurfs or something very basic themed.
mind you the kits HH is getting makes me jealous cause so many kits would have been soo nice back in 2nd or 3rd ED when 1-2 metal blisters were a thing ~cough metal cadian/catachan cough~
Also fair! Primarchs wouldn't be in 99% of Heresy battles. I just love them. Maybe too much...
@@blackbriargaming5483 fair enough!
I’m splitting this box :( don’t have that much cash
Devastating! Luckily you can totally play games at smaller points levels. Especially with mates. I actually prefer smaller (1000 to 1500 points) games cause the choices are just so much more impactful!
I’m sad that tactical support squads can no longer take termite drills:(
Hmmm is the channel dead?
Unfortunately alpha legion armies will be quite costly as we need about 40 Alpharius models to fill out all those squads
Surely each MkVI Marine IS Alpharius...?
Im going for the audacious. I'm going to build an entire Alpha Legion Company in Mk6 Armor.
Fabulous!
Please no one by resin. Just wait them out.
My first game with a vindicator it got one shot with a thermal lance 🥲
