For those looking for a cheap entry point: All Chaos Daemons regardless of their god can be used as Daemons Of The Ruinstorm, this means they are the only army thats fully compatable with 40k, horus herecy AND age of sigmar.

Doing Lamenters. I think I'll be flipping the Spartan, Terminators, axe Praetor and rules pack so hopefully the remaining models will come out nice and cheap after selling those on. As Blood Angels successors they get heavy flamers so the flamer/melta/plasma heavy weapon pack will do some work. Jump troops would be a nice addition so hopefully a MkVI Assault Squad is something we see when a second wave of HH plastic rolls around.

Higher prices come from them having established themselves as the Big Guy on the block, which in turn means they can slap whatever price they want on their releases, because they know that most people in the niche miniature wargaming sphere only ever get exposed to Warhammer. They don't have to worry about sensible pricing.

I have way more than enough plastic to paint right now, so this box is a pass from me. I might be tempted to get an individual box of Mark VI later and gussy them up in third party bits (or maybe even GW's upgrade sprues if they look nice). They're plain and generic by design but I've never been a big fan of "different legions are different colors and that's it", which they seem to be doing here a bit. I much prefer the legion specific resin contemptors, for example.

I'm also gonna go out on a limb and say RTB01 didn't have 60 special weapons and legion specific things (mostly because legion specific stuff is a relatively new concept in terms of models, from beyond the RT era)

Now we have a box of 40 Beakies: If you want a Raven Guard force; three of these boxes (currently £130 each, £50 off full retail again at Dark Sphere) and you have more Marine troops than you can shake a pokey stick at. Heresy NEEDS bodies. The basic troop choice runs at units of 20 marines. The bigger guns will wipe out marines like flash lights on grots. Most of the tanks will tank a unit at a time. "Again, I don't think they're losing money for selling this box for $300."
^This. People need to understand that while you're getting these models at a lower price compared to the products sold separately, that's only because the models are overinflated in price to begin with. This is plastic. None of it costs nearly as much as GW sells it for.
This is born out in recent earnings reports, where GW posted profit margins of ~40%. That's the money they make after squaring all their expenses. It's pure profit. For comparison, most companies in most industries would consider 10% profit margins as doing really well.
This isn't going to hurt GW's bottom line. The money funneled to the shareholders will be just fine. There just might not be as much of it. They produce these starter sets at a lesser profit because they intend to use it to nickel and dime the big spenders among their customers. The ones who think "yeah, these models are great, but I'd really like to expand the force, and give some of these guys special weapons".
Also, because while they're not making as much per ounce of plastic, they still got a bunch of suckers to buy that plastic in a big lump sum. Every casual customer who buys one of these boxes and nothing else has still given GW way more money than they otherwise would, all at once.

I'm sadly an old fogie who's played since the early days, in fact i was at the hammersmith store the day after it opened purchasing some D&D manuals, so it fair to say ive seen a lot of changes to the hobby. I have always loved the grimdark flavour of 40k and the bleak sadness of warhammer fantasy battle's Old World. For 40k Ive collected, played and painted every army GW have made, (up until things started to go a bit skwiffy after 6th edition) ive flipflapped from then having absorbed and read each edition of the rules as theyve been released - I discarded 9th edition out of hand, and what a good thing I did - Rules bloat?!?
I wasnt too enthralled with the first edition of the HH game, although it peaked my interest. But this version, Age of Darkness, after much deliberation and reading of the rules has opened the door wide for me to step in. Its Mature, steamlined, its blown open strategies and options for building your armies and altogether seems like the best thing GW has produced for YEARS.
My Fear is that it's given the same treatment of errata, balances, rewrites, reworks and fiddling that is entirely unnecessary. So while ive gone in hard on this, my guard is still up. Good work GW, and nice video mate.

Nice thoughts and insights into the boxed set - as someone who hasn't played 40k since 2nd edition (came back after a 20 year hiatus into AoS) I have ordered this box and am psyched to get it. I think it's because I've been slowly ploughing my way through the Horus Heresy novels over the last 5 years or so. I think you're right and this box will be a loss leader but more accurately 'Not As Eye-Watering Profitable' as usual GW products, a lure to new players into another gaming system, and why shouldn't it be? For once, they're looking at the big picture. And its worked on me though in fairness i have been 100% complicit from the start - I have bought the set as I really want to take my hobbying to the next level and was planning to use the box to create a diorama depicting the Space Wolves total annihilation of Prospero but i don't see why I then can't make 2* 1500 points of Loyalists and Heretics - so again - ka-ching - two books i'll need to buy (at a combined price) for somewhere between £65 and £85 depending on where you shop. It certainly won't stop me from enjoying hundreds of hours of hobbying though so i guess everyone's a winner.

I plan to recreate (as best I can) the original MK6 OOP Rogue Trader models and either display case them or frame photo...

Plastic wippy Sticks, for hitting your friends, for what else
I bought the box because it is a perfect offer. The box is really huge and bulging, the book in the box is a really good source for the Horus Heresy and ultimately is a good start to the game. I like the "old" rules because they somehow felt fairer with their tables and comparisons and I always get a little nostalgic because I liked the times when we used to hit each other on the fingers with the plastic sticks when you tried to finger your opponent's pieces or manipulate the rolls l are still well remembered.
Ultimately, however, it is a great box to put one or even two small armies from the Horus Heresy in the showcase, because so far I still lack the people with whom I can play this and the box came out a long time ago.

Thank you for this review. The price point is great, but if I ask the question of, if the units were separate, would I buy them? The answer is no. I would love two Deimos plastic predators, the rule book and the loyalist book so I can pit my 40K armies against each other, but I just don’t need 50 more single models right now

I would like to get this box for myself and split it in half, in two armies. I need some advice how to build two armies.

Nice to see that this is £180 in the U.K. and $560 here in New Zealand. NZ$560 is £292, so we are charged £112 extra that's a 61% price difference.

GW doing both Horus Heresy (resurrecting 7th ed rules) and then Oldhammer coming back (resurrecting pre-Sigmar Fantasy rules), plus all the side games like Kill Team, War Cry, Necromunda etc. is... interesting to say the least. I wonder whether the audiences are really that segmented, that all these simultaneous systems can be supported?

Their entire business model is FOMO now. 95%+ of people who buy these boxes never even end up using them. Hence all the partially assembled/painted box sets on Ebay.

HH models are cheaper alternative to making armies with a decent number of tactical marines I believe. I got a decent amount of the mk 6 guys to build a Ravenguard army. Tactical marines, some 3d printing for vanguard vets, and a few other kits to put some backline fighters in.

The local-game-store discount makes the 20-man Tactical squad boxes a better deal than buying normal marines, and I mean, you could also just proxy them for the primaris versions, cus the only difference really is just look

You people do what you want. Just trys not to get Fomo'd into buying a box you actually don't want or which you do not have any plans for just because it is "a good deal" relative to GW's regular pricing scheme.

Yup. I have no interest in playing another game. I’ll stick to 40k, and I don’t need this for 40k.
Now, I may be tempted by that leviathan plastic kit at some point.
