Creating a textile landscape...

- Create a fabric landscape and learn to use an embellisher! This tutorial shows how to use one, up close, and in detail, with some delicious fabrics from my stash. I am very lucky to look out of my window and see the beautiful Cumbrian hills, but a landscape could be created from your own photographs, memories, or from your imagination. And while embellishing is a great way to create a textural textile landscape with ease, it's the fabrics and how you arrange them that make it what it is. Next time I'll be stitching it with free machine embroidery so you can see how that adds details and yet more colour. Stitch... and create even more magic!

Emma, I so enjoy watching your videos. I’m waiting for my second hand baby lock embellisher to come from the states, (I’m a Yorkshire girl who lives in Nova Scotia) You really are an embellisher ambassador and I look forward to spending more time with you. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your experience ❤️
Hi Anne, so lovely to chat to you here, and know that all the fun I am having doing this is working to get people creative around the world! That's just awesome, and I'm so glad your machine is coming...where abouts in Yorkshire are you from? Must be amazing to be in NS?? I like the idea of being an embellisher ambassador...but not one to say when you've had a glass or two! Thanks so much for your support here of my endeavors, here's a big virtual hug! x
I’m from Doncaster. Famous for the St Leger and the market years ago. Spent all my pocket money and Saturday job money on fabric. Professionally I was an RN but my creative side has always been there and now I’m retired I’m able to pursue it. Nova Scotia is beautiful and we’re so fortunate to have found this ‘ piece of heaven on earth’

that's so funny as I am from Sunderland and Morpeth originally, often travelled through Doncaster on the train! And I trained as a nurse when I was at Uni, and loved all that followed from that, but now I am free to help people in a different way! Creativity will out I always think...and it's such a boon at this time especially.
I love this! I'm new to textiles and you've not only inspired me, but opened up the many possibilities! Thank you ~
you're so welcome Anne, thanks for that lovely feedback! textiles is such a versatile medium to use, you can do anything you like! 🙂
I love your videos. This is only the second I've seen so far but I'm so inspired. I've only recently bought my embellisher and absolutely love it. Thank you for the wonderful inspiration.
so happy to hear you have a magic machine...hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Which machine did you buy and how is it performing?
Thank you so much for making this video. Very inspiring
my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!🙂
Love watching your creative process. The embellishing is mesmerising to watch!
thanks Shirley! it's a wonderful machine!
Stunning and inspirational - thank you for sharing.
thanks so much Anne! it's a pleasure!!
I am really loving your channel! I am currently studying textiles at Loughborough university and purchased an embellishment machine last week. My project theme is urban codes at the minute and I’m looking at landscapes your work has inspired me very much. Thank you! ☺️
Hi Emily, thanks for your lovely comments, much appreciated! How exciting to be doing textiles; urban codes and landscape sounds really interesting combo, I'd love to see what you come up with! So glad I can help esp as college life must be a bit odd at the moment!
@@StitchandCreate thanks for your kind reply! It totally is I’ve been at home longer now than I was at uni for! Hopefully I will be back soon but the same time I am loving the free laundry and watching your videos to keep me occupied!
@@emilydoherty9991 yep being at home with parents huh! I hope you'll get back to some uni fun soon, it's so great to have the connection with other creatives and people your own age! but at least there is online...
I love your videos, the colours and fabrics you use are amazing. In fact I enjoy watching them so much I have bought myself an embellishing machine!!
Thanks so much Janie, I really value your appreciation! And wow, another embellisher bought, I think I must be an influencer haha! I do hope you'll get as much pleasure from it as I do mine...just play and see what happens! :)
Loved watching this! Had no idea what on earth an embellisher was, now I have to see and know more about it. Just started on my hand stitching journey a year ago (in my 60s) and am having a ball. Saw your article on Textile.org. Am keen to learn about free motion stitching too. So far it's all been by hand for me. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rose, thanks so much for being here and sharing your story too! Handstitching is very lovely, and I do a little in my spare time...but free machining is my passion (can you tell!). It can be nice to combine both, I do sometimes add handwork or beads to pieces. And my embellisher...well that's just another amazing thing in my life! I hope you'll keep enjoying my videos!
Hello! Interested to know what kind of Embellisher machine you're using. Thank you. Enjoyed your video very much!
Hi Janet, thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! It's a Babylock emebllisher with 12 needles, and it's fab!
@@StitchandCreate I'm excited. The Baby Lock Embellished is the one I'm considering! 😄
@@janetsteele7025 oo I'm excited for you! It's a real workshorse of a machine, I absolutely love mine and it's been well used!
Your landscape is absolutely gorgeous! I think I need to look into your online course.
thanks so much Gail! At the moment I don't have any courses online as the providers stopped working earlier this year! So if you would like free tutorials just keep watching the Stitch and Create channel!
Having trouble finding an embellishing machine in US
sorry to hear that Michelle, fingers crossed you may be lucky!
Hi. Just recently found your channel. Wow wow wow. I want an embellisher machine NOW 😄! Anyone have any ideas for best to buy for a beginner? 🤔
Hi Lynn, so glad you are here and enjoying it! Embellishers:
I use a Babylock 12 needle machine, I chose it because the shop said it was well engineered and I find it has worked very well for me, and I work it hard! It's very easy to change needles and get access to the 'head'. However they are more expensive, it all depends on how much you are going to do and your budget.
You might want to ask someone if you can borrow theirs to try...see if you like it. I’d personally recommend more needles rather than fewer, and ask how you change the needles, eg can you do singles. Sometimes a whole set has to be done at once. Needles can be a bit expensive, but I buy Babylock compatible for an ok price and they work well.
You may be able to pick up a 2nd hand machine as they are around...not everyone realises how brilliant they are!
I have to say this is what I would recommend...but obvs it has to be your choice!
hope that helps
Happy embellishing!
be prepared to be addicted...
Emma
I have just received my embellisher machine. Waited 6 months for it! Just got to have the courage to use it now. Can’t wait 😃
What is the fabric you are embellishing onto please?
Hi Sharon, I think I just used some calico as a base for this piece. Hope that helps! 🙂
what sewing machine are you using.
Hi Pam , it's not a sewing machine but an embellisher or needle felting machine!
I just found your videos. I love them. I also have embellishing machine but break many needles. Lol. I just don’t know where to order more. Any suggestions? Thanks
so sorry Raydene I am so slow to reply to your query, I thought I'd answered them all then realised I hadn't!! I get mine from Barnyarns online, they're compatible to Babylock, (my machine) but not own brand. If you're breaking lots of needle (and I have done that!) just maybe have a look at the materials you're using, and are you stressed when you're using it? sounds mad I know...but our machines pick up on our mood! Just relax, play with the fabrics and take it slow maybe?
Great video. So interesting and informative.... can't wait to try out some of your techniques. Thank you so much. x
You are so welcome, Denise, thanks so much for leaving a comment!
Hello, What is your base fabric?
Hi Andrea, I think I just used some calico for this one.
How often do you get a needle breakage with your embellisher. I've borrowed a friends embellisher, which is a Janome 5 needle model. She doesn't use it because the needles kept breaking. I've started using it and have a viscose/wool felt base layer. I embellished wool on it no problem and then tried a polyester ribbon and the needle broke. Have you any more advice on how to avoid needle breakages.
Hi Christine, I think you have to bear in mind what these machine were invented for which is for working with wool tops and felt making. Trying other fabrics is trial and error I find, listen to the machine and hear what it says, if it sounds hard or loud stop! Also don't use if you're feeling at all stressed...I did this once and broke endless needles! Just try and be slow and gentle till you're sure the fabric will embellish. Perhaps also 5 needles are more delicate, mine has 12 which 'spreads the load'. Keep going and good luck!
What are you using for your foundation fabric? Great videos!
thanks you! and...calico is my great standby for foundations!
Does the embellished fabric have any practical use? Ie can you make cushion covers out of it?
good idea Sylvia, I guess if you stitch on top and don't be rough with them they could make nice cushions! Basically you can make what you like, but it won't be like a 'normal fabric in terms of use and would need careful washing!
Is there a video on the embellisher you are using?
funnily enought Eileen, I've just put this week's video up and yes there's an intro to my Babylock 12 needle machine! enjoy!
Great video! The embellisher adds many new avenues of crafting. Love it!
thanks Linda, and yes, sure does!
