may I ask where can I download this Quest 2 version of APK? I cannot find it from ppsspp download page. Is it only available on auto build page? Is the latest version be v1.13.1-96-g392d83fb2 of 31 Jul? Thanks a lot!
I'm already running an emulated Android device inside my Quest 2 and I've figured out how to hardwire my phone through the USB-C port for access to the Samsung Galaxy Dex mode on a giant virtual monitor in my headset. Using TeamViewer, I can then float a giant mirror of my phone's normal UI next to the humongous Dex mode desktop UI - I can open a third window to my PC. Granted, the current hardware gets crunchy performing such wonders, but we are getting there very fast.
The environments not being rendered behind you makes a lot of sense. Optimisation was so important to get some of these games running on the PSP. Its nice to see how a 6DOF lets us see some of the tricks they used.
what i liked the most about this is that this is revealing to a lot of people how games secretly optimized the games for the portable device. The disappearing items are items that the game calculated are out of the camera's view so the game would stop rendering them in order to save ram and reduce the graphical payloads. Its really cool to see that technology in action. Game design can be really creative.
Another cool thing to do is to use the Citra emulator running through link cable or air link or virtual desktop. You can use the settings for 3d and you can get it to work in the headset. It's pretty cool being able to play 3ds games on a huge screen with the 3d working.
Looooordy. I cannot tell you how useful this for me. Been war gaming making a version of one of these old Ps games for vr, and this is gonna let me test that theory out before I invest a lot of time doing it. Beardo, you consistent legend. Thank you! Please keep covering stuff like this. If one of these pops up for Playstation proper or ps2 I'd be fn set, and you just have such a knack for finding this kinda stuff.
Haha thank you, I've always got my ear to the ground and enough people know what I'm like now so I'm often tagged in weird little projects and things online 😅 in theory the PSXe emulator for PS1 should work on Quest, there's an APK file version for android sooooo I can't see why it wouldn't work, you might need a controller connected via Bluetooth to navigate menus etc but that's easy to setup. The PS2 emulator (PCSX2) is a little tougher to run but again it has an APK version and I'd be curious to see how well the Quest 2 handles PS2 games, I imagine they'll run like crap haha, I've got PS2 running like a dream on my Steamdeck but even that took a little bit of doing
@@BeardoBenjo I've been trying to narrow down the hardware limitations by previous gaming generations to get an idea of what it's capable of. Granted, there's some tick loss because of the emulation process, but yeah, I'll go and try all of these. I've kinda figures out the quest 2 is equivalent to a less optimized ps2, except that power is split to each display. I guess it's time to do some science! Still though, the psp emulator is a perfect start for me. Thanks again!
PSP VR on PC has been here for years but its cool that someone is working on a brand new version on quest. Its interesting to see that the same issues that was on the PC version are also on this version. like the issue of the sky and the side view in GTA: Vice City. Since this is a new project that is being worked on maybe some of those issue's can get fixed in future updates.
I freaking love you Beardo! Always coming with something new and now that I've been tinkering with emulation on basically every system I have except my quest 2. Thanks again for busting your ass to make these.
This works well with ppsspp on Android with a vr headset with the vr setting on and use a controlled. Usually just a black screen behind you. This is really cool though.
My headset hasn't been picked up in a few months. This genuinely has me excited to pick it up today. Thanks for posting this, I woulda had no idea it was possible!

It's funny, Resident Evil 4 does similar rendering tricks. Everything even an inch off-screen is almost entirely not rendered. It's funny now that there's a VR port of it on Quest 2. Shows just how far tech has advanced in 15 years. From not being able to render anything on a console to full rendering in VR(!) in a portable, wireless headset. Just wild.
This is absolutely amazing to witness. It would be interesting to see if there would be any way to get around the display culling in some 3D game engines. I'd imagine it would require some really hacky per-game solutions.
I am not really a PSP person but it's still cool to be able to relive or replay those games on a VR headset in big screen or try it in VR. The VR aspect would most likely break my desire of VR though if it's not perfect. There are a lot of games that have made older VR enthusiast stop playing VR and get uninterested. I wouldn't really show something like this to people that are just starting to try VR. It's like they need to be already invested. Too bad they don't have a way to get other emulators like Dolphin on the Quest 2.
The use of VR headsets to display old school games via emulators in a massive personal theater is one of my favorite use cases. Been enjoying them via pc-vr and my 8kx, but it's going to be amazing once we can get all of these up and running on our new Crystal and 12kQled devices. For my personal work use I'm looking at our Crystal device for photo and video editing, and the 12kqled as my gaming device. Can't wait to see Mario for the NES running on the 12kQled screen muahahaha
I feel like the issues with stuff not rendering are due to the original psp memory. Like most games it renders what you look at in front of you mainly to save space. Also I can't wait to see how the good phantasy star looks
I am using this emulator and i can say i am a favorite of it because now i can play my favorite psp games in vr like starwars battlefront 2 wich is amazing and motor storm artic edge
I can explain why OpenGL on GTA has so many render issues with the 360 part, the game most likely has a "render only" within the default sized window which is used to save on memory allocation to prevent 3D games from crashing in very detailed environments. The fix is obviously to adjust the game's "window" to the Quest 2. I look forward to seeing more coverage on this branch of software as it keeps growing!
This works a million times better with a Bluetooth gamepad. I spend hours driving around the track in Gran Turismo. My preferred way to play PSP games now
Never having owned any Sony consoles at all this will open up a whole plethora of games on my Quest 2 that I've never played before, hope I can get them cheap on eBay, perish the thought that I would acquire them any other way. Thanks for the introduction to this :)
Man I loved the PSP, I saved up when I was 15 to buy one on launch in the UK in September 2005. Burnout Legends is an epic game, same with Wipeout Pure and Pulse. I think you should try Wipeout Pure in VR as there's a FPS view for Wipeout Pure and maybe in the VR mode it might look pretty cool?
I am the same way with Tinkering with tech and things to make them do things they aren't actually made to do with it... WOW... I had to sub after you said that.
I really hope San Andreas Quest only went quiet because Rockstar's got such high technical standards for their big games that it's taking forever to get the experience up to par. Then again they did the Definitive Trilogy...I hope they didn't outsource or cancel San Andreas...it was part of the reason I bought a Quest 2.
I know for Metroid Prime in Dolphin VR, uou can get GameShark codes that remove culling, so that 3D objects remain drawn when not in front of you, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes up with code to vix various games in VR mode for PPSSPP.
No the Quest 2 is powerful enough to run some PS2 games with the aethersx2 emulator. Its just doesn't have 6 degrees of freedom and you have to run the rom over wifi or usb. But most of the emulators will run roms directly off the Quest 2 so you can play some N64, WII, Dreamcast.

Oh man... if I could just sink my entire PS collection on the Oculus 2? I'd be happy with just that. Imagine how Doom would play or Disruptor? I'm actually surprised you didn't try at least one fps game. Least Burnout was a popular game but no Ride Racer or Rage Racer??? Problem with me? After the Supernintendo the Playstation was my go to system for a LONG time. Imagine how Endhander or RayStorm or better yet Thunder Force 5? Lets not forget Duke Nukem Total Meltdown or some Resident Evil? You actually have me excited about downloading this very specific Oculus 2 Playstation emulator that can run on the native hardware.

3DS is the only console worth playing in a VR headset because on a normal screen you can't see the 3D Stereoscopic effect. Run Citra on your PC, set the output to side-by-side format and set the Depth to 50%. Use either VirtualDesktop or BigScreen to stream the emulator output to the Quest 2. The 3D visual is stunning in the headset.

Two particular things about this that I'm curious about. 1: How well does Persona 3 Portable work? I know most of the game is done visual novel-style, but the RPG battles seem like they'd be pretty neat setpieces to be able to freely wander around. 2: The PSP is able to run PS1 games natively, you just have to do some minor tinkering to convert the PS1 ISO files into an .EBOOT that the PSP can read. How well does the VR rendering handle PS1 games? Might be worth seeing how some of those look, particularly something like the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy once 3D support is working. (I tried VorpX on N.Sane Trilogy, but the rendering was weird and it made distances next to impossible to judge.)
ua-cam.com/video/3fbdNJSCqpU/v-deo.html Crash team racing modded for vr, i think this is the closest i've seen to that, shame the dev stopped working on it
The ppsspp emulator is great, but how do I get the screen to be not so big right in my face? When I hold the lower trigger button down then it’s further away and still plenty big and looks perfect, but I don’t want to hold that button the whole time. How do I configure this? Also, is the virtuality mode fixable? Right now there are overlays in the background that completely interfere and I don’t see any settings to turn them off. Thanks if anyone can help! :)

@@Evilkingus Of course. It's a good reminder, thank you. But as you stated, it seems that on the continuum of "we care only about gaming" to "we care only about profit", they seem significantly closer to the former than Meta. The lesser of two evils? Perhaps. At the least among best that can be expected from a capitalist enterprise.
Tbh I would not invest in a mobile SteamVR. To date, it has inferior performance to the native Oculus VR mode and Valve has released exactly 1 game to support their $1000 VR headset. Meta delivers significantly more. No matter whether games or features.

That’s really cool! 👍🏼👏🏼 Do I understand you right that this is the normal ppsspp Android version and not a special version for the quest2? So I only have to sideload the Google playstore apk on my quest2?
I wonder if they could make the games first person somehow? So when you look the character looks in that direction and everything gets rendered properly.

(I tried VorpX on N.Sane Trilogy, but the rendering was weird and it made distances next to impossible to judge.)
ua-cam.com/video/3fbdNJSCqpU/v-deo.html Crash team racing modded for vr, i think this is the closest i've seen to that, shame the dev stopped working on it
i bet games like persona 2 would look fantastic due to the fact that it only renders a small part of the area and nothing else
the gta "story" series on ps2 are ports of the psp games.
Does the vr mode make the game stereoscopic 3d? That's probably a bit of an ask but it be pretty class if possible
The newest version has that option.
There's both a VR mode and a stereoscopic 3D mode
does the big screen mode still provide stereoscopy?
Gotta try burnout dominater
Graphically impressive for a PSP game.
it's try ppsspp on quest 2 3 week ago i see an option to play 3d side by side but when i put image side by side the screen dont chnage mode to watch 3d side by side someone know how to do it in the quest 2.
i would love using the quest 2 just to play games in big screen mode.. as of now i just have a laptop
hail the creator!
I tried to find this program for the Quest 2 but I only saw it for Windows and Andriod. Do I install the Android version?
You didn't try anything first person? Wipeout in cockpit mode would have been cool to see.
If Valve released a standalone "SteamVR," I would drop the Quest in a hot minute.. Can you imagine?
Just remember - Valve is not your friend, it's a company. With that said, I think it would be more consumer-friendly that Meta.
@@SeanLumly Valve is still charging the same, $1000 price for the Index, which is almost 4 years old now. Valve doesn't care about gaming lmao.
@@kupokinzyt Where exactly did I say that they cared? Please read more carefully.
Tbh I would not invest in a mobile SteamVR. To date, it has inferior performance to the native Oculus VR mode
and Valve has released exactly 1 game to support their $1000 VR headset. Meta delivers significantly more.
No matter whether games or features.
awesome! I wish something like this exist for WMR ! if you find one please let us know ;-)
well now I need a VR Arcade cabinet emulator running MAME Roms.
This would be amazing running off a PC CPU/GPU instead of the XR2. Also, you didn't try Ridge Racers!? Tut tut..
Mmmmm you forgot how to show us how to get the ppsspp on oculus
I really dig emulation as well. However I can't really get into 3rd person vr.
Looks great, but sadly it cant be found on the discord anymore. Just the non-VR-Version
i was doin something similuar using the xbox phone app on mine. using the game streaming mode. head mount and the xbox controller was a thing it worked tho.
So what happens if you start GTA and then step forward like 10 steps or so in real life, would the game be in first person? 🤔
Probably.
Very cool, I would like Rust to be put into VR
It’s a cool proof of concept, but sure looks like I would barf with amount of motion sickness and with all the pop in that happens, definitely needs some work
dam i might do man hunt 2 on mine
the fact that Quest can run PSP and PS2 emulators and so you can check both what original RE4 looked like and the enhanced true VR port is mind-blowing. But hey, it's a stinking mobile chip, it deserves no credit! Srsly, it's mind-blowing downright sci-fi stuff in ways that expensive GPUs with 3 jet turbines inside a big box simply isn't...
Hi great video on emulation could you do a video on how to hook up your steam deck to the quest 2 as a display out or something like virtual desktop so that i can play my steam deck games on a giant virtual screen etc while setting on another planet lol thanks in advance
That’s really cool! 👍🏼👏🏼
Do I understand you right that this is the normal ppsspp Android version and not a special version for the quest2? So I only have to sideload the Google playstore apk on my quest2?
i think this is a special version for the vr headset because i see no VR mode
I wonder if they could make the games first person somehow? So when you look the character looks in that direction and everything gets rendered properly.
Great video m8 what was Dante's inferno like? 👍👍
Finally managed to get vr version (APK version 15) downloaded to quest 2. Thank you beardo. Quest 2 mapping works now. However, very stuttery even on X2 psp resolution (the only option available). On start it states "running slow, turn off software rendering". I can see no option for that. Can anyone help please? Thank you
Can you do a video on how please
Try turning on auto frame rate
is it in stereoscopic 3d mode?
Yes
Great video thx. Just one question that may be silly. But are the immersive modes on the games that do work in this mode actually performing in 3d stereoscopic or is it 2d immersive?
I'm also wondering if its 3d or pancake only
