    I have another theory about the Stray Demon, rather then being a back up guard for the Asylum I think he was actually being imprisoned there. I mean the only way you get to fight him is by returning to the Asylum, if he was a back up guard he would be able to freely walk around the Asylum to catch escaping undead especially if the first one is already dead but when we return we see the undead roaming about wherever they want. Also when we first see Stray we see him behind bars and the door to get to him is a locked cell door, this makes me think he was actually being imprisoned there.
    I think he was actually guarding the entrance to Quelaags lair and was suppouse to stop the undead from ringing the second bell of awakening just like the Taurus Demon, but as the name implies he "strayed" off from his duty [I think because the poison swamp was beginning to effect him] and because of that maybe he was imprisoned in the asylum along with the undead.

      Perhaps they were thought of as lesser demons, weak and unable to properly do their duties, that's why they're sent to a terrible place like the Asylum for a, seemingly less important job. The more loyal of the two, the Asylum demon being able to free roam. Perhaps the Stray Demon was locked up for punishment.

    It's possible that the Dark Souls demons follow the typical fantasy demon trope of people being able to make a contract with them or bind them to a certain place. This might be another explanation why several demons seem to work for Gwyn, like the batwing demons.

    • @bmombaerts

      The witch of izalith was able to create the chaos flame, but (eventaully) lost control.
      Also let's not forget that the 3 lords were not enemies but allies.
      The witch tried to create a second flame so that Gwynn could stay in power.
      When she testing out how to 'create' things from her soul of life she eventaully found how to create demons. These demons were then used as gaurds (stray and assylum demon) The witch created them so that they could be used to gaurd the undead.
      The demon fire sage was her crowning achievement.
      Not only was she able to create an even stronger version then the stray and assylum ones. but stray learned how to use some form of spells, and the firesage became what his name implies, a demon capable of using pyromancy on par with a firesage.
      However these demon was the last one she was able to create by herself. She lost power of the chaos flame and was infused with it to become the bed of chaos.
      The bed of chaos is only interested in preserving itself and thus it creates more demons.
      It uses 2 of the 7 chaos sisters as shields, 2 more got 'hit' by the transformation magic but were able to remain in control of themself (Quelaag and Quelaan.)
      and 3 of them were able to get away with their little brother (possibly they were not in izalith when the disaster happened) When running the little brother lost his ring, which the bed of chaos turned into a centipede demon.
      This caused the brother his sores to start boiling over with lava again and one of the sisters stayed with him but eventaully died (the corpse that triggers ceaseless discharge his attack) the spider sisters decided to stay at the outskirts of the demon ruins the keep people out and to portect the bell, for if a undead would be able to ring the bell he would surelly go after the soul of their mother later.
      This leaves 2 more chaos sisters.
      One decided to go back to lost izalith (or remained there in the first place)
      And fights you outside of the chaos bed's room, at this point she decides to either make a desperate attempt to stop you or she might have been hollowed (this however is unsure since we don't even know if she is a undead)
      The final one is the last remaining 'free' chaos sister. And the last true master of pyromancy : Quelana .(untill she teaches you)

    • @EvilDoresh
      @EvilDoresh 11 років тому +2

      Brecht Mombaerts
      And even if the chaos demons are as chaotic as their names makes them out to be, prolonging the age of fire is in their best interest because the fire (or at least a twisted version of it) is quite literally their mother.

    • @DaveControlLive
      @DaveControlLive  11 років тому +9

      Brecht Mombaerts The only thing I'll point out is we really have absolutely no idea if 2 of the sisters decided to become the binds for the Bed of Chaos. I realize it's in Vaati's video - but there's absolutely nothing to support this outside of his speculation. (I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying it's another speculation).

    • @bmombaerts
      @bmombaerts 11 років тому +1

      DaveControlLive
      I believe it was confirmed by the developer somewhere, but I don't know and I don't care enough to search.
      I assume that theory is correct since Quelana said she is the only sister who made it out, and since the other 6 are found (if the bind thing is correct) that said you are right that the game never states it.
      It's like how the game doesn't show that the butcher enemies are female, but the developers admitted it.

    • @DaveControlLive
      @DaveControlLive  11 років тому +1

      Brecht Mombaerts From the multiple interviews I've read (Design works, game no shokutaku) the only thing confirmed is that Ceaseless is their youngest sibling.
      I really think it's just a popular speculation that's neither been confirmed nor denied. I did some searching, and came up blank. (I'm not saying that's concrete evidence, but literally all I can find is people speculating that). Sorry, bro, but I need a source.

      I mean there is the asylum demon(s) and the demons in anor londo as you said. I'd suggest Vaatividya's video on "izalith translations" it's really good.

    Dragon butts are part of the undead dragon, not demons. They are the legs of the Undead Dragons, which we see one in the valley of Drakes hanging its upper half. Could be said that many of the legs have fallen and taken form of life, similar to how the undead dragons have taken a life of their own. Not necessarily bed of chaos.
    The Black Knights are designated to hunt down the Demons.

    It feels kind of horrible that in order to find out what's been happening in Lordran, you have to go and make it worse. There is no good ending, and every move you make sends the world and characters more quickly towards their doom.

      To hell with them and their issues, which I might add they have in most cases created themselves!
      All that matters is that the player can become the lord of darkness and rule over everything with tyranny and horror.
      Whoever gets hurt in the way, whoever dies, or loses all hope doesn't matter.
      They're obstacles, burdens and bothers in the way to absolute power.
      Insects to be crushed under the player's heel without mercy.

      Possible. But if it's true, and demons do not like undead, then why do they not attack the undead thieves, only you? Is it some kind of agreement between them and Capra, because Capra knows they are not the Chosen Undead and offered them a "job"?

You are always said to be of the same kind as those you start out slaughtering to gain your power (Hollows, Unkindled, blood-infused-something-stuff). And all that for some obscure "higher purpose" you don't even understand. If thats not a dick move i don't know what is

      When the demon jumped down the floor cracked, during the battle the cracks spread out, with time the floor becomes less stable and then you walk over it, making it collapse because at this point it barely supports it's own weight.

    A fun fact that seems to escape most people's notice: The Bed of Chaos in Japanese is called The Seedbed of Chaos. It's a botanical nursery. This is why most of the demons have a tree motif. Capra Demon for example has a tree on its chest and its belt/sash is made of twigs. The Asylum/Stray/Firesage Demons look like shorn treestumps. Even the Taurus Demon has a weapon that looks more like a twisted, gnarled growth of vine than a proper handle to a hammer. To say nothing of the Demonic Foliage.

    ps. here's my guess, capra demon, demon firesage etc. they all live in a place surrounded by lava, the firesage's body is even on fire, BUT they are weak to fire....how can that be? my theory is that demons were pre-existent creatures, that after the failed attempt of the witch of izalith, transformed into demons, they didn't use to live in lava, and also they didn't use to live like "demons".

    Yeah, I had to think on that for while - but check the Addendum (and my Quelana / Witch of Izalith lore vids). The Black Knights were at war with the Demons, most likely because the Chaos Flame is satiated with humanity (just like the First Flam). I think the Bat Wing Demons were enticed to switch sides, hence the fact that they're the only ones (as noted in their weapon description) with elemental damage - and specifically lightning damage at that!

    From the interviews in the Design Works, it sounds like the recorded dialogue was meant as story (at least for Quelaag), but they decided it didn't fit in when your character waltzes upon her - so I take it that the meaning behind it exists story-wise. (Like you were saying).

  • @DaveControlLive
    @DaveControlLive  11 років тому

    Some great thoughts and questions there.
    I think (from reading some comments below), that it's very possible the chaos demons tried to spread out and occupy more of Lordran, and Gwyn/Knights weren't happy about that, so they would fight them back. I think based off the Quelaag cut dialogue, they were defeated, and surrendered to their "banished fate" away from humans.
    Why do you think DS 2 plays in Izalith? Every interview they've stated it doesn't take place in Lordran.

    Good video, but I think there's something you (and many others) may have missed!
    From the in-game description of the Demon Firesage's Catalyst:
    "...The Demon Firesage was the first demon,
    and the last master of the original fire
    arts before the Witch of Izalith was
    engulfed by Chaos, creating pyromancy."
    - The Firesage was the first Demon.
    - He was the last master of the original fire arts (the ones that got lost)... BEFORE the creation of the Bed of Chaos!

    The centipede demon drops it for you to pick up - what I meant in the video (to clarify) was that the centipede demon was intially formed by Ceaseless Discharge (the original owner of the ring) dropping it.

    Yeah, I updated that in the Addendum (sorry about that)!
    - So, the demons and Gwyn were at war. I believe the Bat Wing Demons switched sides (hence why they have lightning spears, which are the only non-brutish weapons any demons have in the game).
    - I believe Gwyn won, hence Quelaag's cut dialogue from the game: "Go back, forbidden be these parts. The realm of the creatures of chaos, they accept their banished fate"
    I think I talk about it (a little) more in my Quelana or WoI lore video.

    On top of that, there's also statues resembling him (and the Stray/Asylum Demon) in Izalith!
    Also, if you look at the intro, the firestorms the witches wove were created using their Catalysts (Izalith Catalyst), thus being magical in nature.
    Hence, I believe there's two kinds of demons.
    The original demons, the first of which was the Firesage.
    The Chaos demons, spawned from or because of the Bed of Chaos.

    Nothing to do with speculation, but the Capra Demon, with it's design, the area around it, and the fight itself, just makes me think of a hunter. It uses hounds, has helpers that stalk the prey, and corners it in a room to go in for the kill. It also constantly stalks you across the room, and machetes are commonly used by hunters in heavily jungled areas.

    Actually, both Capra and Taurus are weak to fire.
    But, it's possible I'm over-thinking things.
    Just an interesting side note - the only other chaos demon outside of Izalith is the Batwing Demon who fights in Anor Londo with lightning imbued spears, which is made special note of in the description. (How different this is from all other demons). Also, the black knights had a war against the demons (their weapon description), which in Quelaag's cut dialogue them seemed to lose.

    It's the primary connection through Undead Burg - the town of the Undead, and it doesn't require an out of the way special key. The only way to access Blighttown, without the master key, is through Capra.

    The Demon ruins and Lost Izalith both are hugely fire based areas and the Demons who dwell there are mostly fire based threats.
    Take a look at the area where the Capra Demon has set up shop after you defeat him and his dogs, it's one of the most tranquil and relatively safe places in Lordran.
    The Capra Demon isn't guarding the Bed of Chaos, he is trying to stay away from the other Demons in a place they can't get to as he's the only Demon who would fit in that tight nook he's at.

  • @vopop30

    I think the normal entrance to Anor Londo on top of Sen's Fortress (the rock slide framed by stone columns, located just behind where the Iron Golem waits before you fight it) was destroyed to prevent a demon invasion of the city. The only demons in Anor Londo are the flying batwings, so perhaps the city guards fought them off until a truce between the batings and the guards was made.

    thats actually a nice theory. Especially considering the reason the witch tried to copy the first flame was to prevent the kindling that drove gwyn insane. Maybe the demons, above everyone else understood it in the same way kaathe did, that the age of fire was meant to end. Also, the chaos covenant actually gives you a shortcut to the bed of chaos, as to hint that they actually want you to to end it too.

  • @modernotaku1764

    This really added another layer to it. I had always thought that the demons just managed to escape from the Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith and we're just running amuck but their placements and the fact that they were each guarding something seems to say otherwise. Taurus demons placement on the path to the bell seems to fit well, and thinking back on it, it almost seems like it was intentionally placed there. First in the first part of the undead burg there's no large monsters except for the very short scene where the dragon lands and takes off. Then after the Taurus demon you see a giant dragon, a pig, and the bell gargoyles. These enemies almost seem like they were intentionally placed in the way of the player as a way to stop them. Also while the Capra Demon was placed there to guard the way to the Bell, it could also have been another precaution to protect Quelaags sister. Quelaag herself might have set up a bunch of obstacles just to make sure you never got down that far, she was just the last line of defense

    Well, the lady merchant in the water way does mention that you've come to Lordran at a bad time, meaning that the Undead lived a good life there. Just look at New Londo, wich had a rich colture before it turned into ruin. That's what's so amazing about this game, is that you are basically playing in the far future, where so much already has happened in the past. Also, I don't really think that Thouris and Capra are gaurding paths since you can enter them without facing the 2.

  • @DaveControlLive
    @DaveControlLive  11 років тому

    I really never thought about it as much as I did when making this video. I mean, crazy, it must have been a thriving metropolis for the Undead before... everything went to hell. I definitely think it's worth exploring. I don't know why, but I was never particularly interested in it until working on this video. (Probably because it just seemed like that starter area you forget about).

  • @GaulishGecko
    @GaulishGecko 11 років тому

    Some additional speculation; perhaps the Firesage somehow instructed the witches in the use of the fire arts? Maybe that's why statues were built in his likeness?
    In any case, there were demons before the Bed of Chaos, though I believe they're of a different kind (like a different race, such as the giants), perhaps they once had a name of their own that was lost with time like so many things...

  • @BigIron4511

    that capra demon outline in tower wall kinda makes me think that capra and tarous demon had a bit of a fight and tarous ended up throwing capra into the side of the tower, and then capra falling into lower undead burge, so that might be another thought on how capra ended up in lower undead burg. :P

    Some great thoughts! Here's some things to consider, though:
    The Bed of Chaos states it is the mother "of all demons", and the bed of life being "The source of all demons."
    This is translated from Japanese, so "Demon Firesage was the first demon" could mean a few things:
    - It is the most powerful demon. (As typically first means that in Japanese)
    - The comma at the end indicates a different thought process, and it simply transformed first.
    - Or, your thoughts! :)
    I love your statue points!

  • @demonmoustache83

    The reason i think the Capra demon is in the undead burg, is because it was there to protect the bed of chaos. it's mother or maker. to get to the bed of chaos, you had to get down to the depths and defeat the gaping dragon. but to get there, you have to get the key which the capra demon have. but there is another way down to Blightown now. the tunnels in valley of drakes. which may have been dug out by the trolls or ogres which is a reason you find them down there. this is just some thoughts.
