This is Link. Link is a German Shepherd that struggles with reactivity toward other dogs, joggers, and anything else that moves. Link also exhibits dangerous behavior toward the owners horses. Unfortunately Link has been to another trainer that misused an e collar and prong collar which will only make things worse. We will fix all that.
Larry, I appreciate content vs video quality or noise. I also appreciate that you post these very useful videos free of charge. If people give up or tune out because of some grain in the video or wind then they may not appreciate the quality of the content of the videos. There are plenty of videos with crap information and amazing quality. So I choose to express my gratitude for sharing your expertise.
well put
couldn't agree more!
Totally agree. This was captured on a complete potato in 2018 but boy is it a great video, so no complaints.
5 yr old comment but absolutely agree, it's 2023 (almost 2024) and here I am trying to learn from one of the best.
Good job Larry and well done Angela for not giving up on the dog and finding someone to teach him properly.
Which we had a Larry in england the last trainer I had for my rottweiler was scared of him
Your comments about using a prong collar and having it never fully work with reactivity stuck with me. My doberman never lunges but will whine and forge ahead no matter what when we pass a dog. Today I did exactly what you did in this video with my 93lb doberman who and doesn't even care about a leash correction. We did about 10 mins in the driveway of left and right about turns and walking backwards and recalling on a level 7 mini educator. We then went around the whole block on a flat collar and not one leash pop was needed. Even passed a little dog and all he did was look quickly and not really care. I always thought I needed a prong on to control my large dog but today was magical. Cant wait to do it all again tomorrow. Thank you Larry!
Love how patient and supportive you are with the person. People are so anxious when they get started and struggle to take in the information and act on it. Her progression is great.
I really enjoyed this. Not only because Angela was brave enough to be willing to get filmed! But also because you could just SEE how much more in tune they both got with each other under your coaching. He's got the makings of being a great dog. So glad she found you, Larry. (And I'd love to drop-kick the trainer who put him on blast with NO conditioning to the collar at all?! I mean, wow. They should not be in business.)
yea i trained my dog to actually walk properly before using a prong you dont put a dog that pulls in a prong collar just no incorrect
I wish she was more enthusiastic when she said "yes"
This is one of my favorites so far.
Or assertive.. and a bit faster reaction to box noise.. lol..
The drawl is not really how I would do it..
But if Larry happy who are we to judge.. 😉
The thing is, this is her personality. She is a very calm person. That isn't going to change, and no one should try to change it to accommodate the Dog. The dog has to learn to respect HER the way she IS. If she behaves calmly in all other situations, and then gets hyper when the dog does something good, it could have a negative effect, making the dog think it has done something wrong to cause an anxiety of sorts in his otherwise calm handler. The dog knows he is appreciated by her demeanor, whether she says yes or not, and whether she gives a treat or not and the calm about her is a really good attribute and will prove to be a valuable tool in more advanced training.
She is doing perfect right now. Keeping everything calm. Once the dog is farther along and understanding things she can get more animated then.
Id much rather work with this than getting the dog over excited. especially a reactive dog.
@bombshelly8274 I needed to read that. Thank you!!!
What an amazing training session. I love your kindness and patience towards Angela and her sweet dog. You are such a warm person. Thank you so much Larry.
Prime example of dog and owner getting better at the same time. Great content.
Great video that actually shows the proper use of the e-collar. There are so many misconceptions about it because so many people use it incorrectly. In the right hands, it's a great tool that puts much less pressure on a dog than a prong collar, choke chain and other traditional tools - even leads.
Awsome! Scraping some of that rust off the e-collar dogma. It's good to see someone new and inexperienced start sessions on the e-collar. She caught on well. That dog had no problems he's a great pooch. He just needed some proper guidance as far as I was concerned. Thank you Larry for showing yet again that the e-collar is not lethal in any way. Keep doing what your doing being the calm in the storm. Have a great day!
I’ve got two 7 month old beagle/apbt mixes and this teenage phase is so different from the puppy phase. They are training to be a service pair. My brother directed me to your videos to help my boy get cleaner turns and better corrections, and to get the girl to stop sniffing everything. Literally one session and I see difference in my dogs. Tysm. 🎉
How's your progress?
@@hobbyless4089 great! My boy likes to run. A lot. I'm currently working on his recall. It was so good but I had to leave him with some family for a week and he realized he's real fast. 😭 Now every time he's not in direct command he just runs around like a crazy... Well animal. Lol
Good instructions to the owner. The key element for all good dog training is training the owner. You gave tons of support and feedback to her and explained the components at the right time. It’s so hard to get the owners to properly and fairly communicate with their dogs. Regardless of the training tool. Nice demonstration.
OMG, Angela is me. I have seen more progress in 30 minutes of this video than I saw in 6 months and $2600 later with our past trainer.
thank you for showing these videos where you can see where the dog starts and you take them through the steps to teach them. this is the most help that i have seen. no one else shows the steps inbetween. thank you i really appreciate all that you do it will make it so much better for me and my pup.
This video was very helpful because we are able to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve come across a lot of e collar videos but the dog being used as a reference is already trained, so we don’t get to see the transition from a reactive dog to a trained dog. Please continue to create these videos! Thank you
Thank you! I learned a lot from this video. My previous trainer started them with prong collars and they've worn them everyday since. I took them off today and did these exercises with a flat collar. Thank you LOTS!
Only to be worn while
training.
You're simply BRILLIANT. You get it. All a dog wants to do is to please their human, but they need clarity from their human so they know that what they are doing is right (or wrong). You may be a good dog trainer, but you're a GREAT human trainer. Good work.
This is very very helpful. Even with sometimes terrible sound, mostly terrible image, worth 1M+ views!
I really appreciate your honesty and advocating for the use of positive reinforcement over the old school tactics. Spread the good word!
I had a 80 pound boxer...I used some of these techniques and it only helped a bit...repetition and patients was the best....soon he was okay off the leash.....then he had a ceaser and died in my arms...non related ....have any of you boxer people had anything like this happen?....I wasn't from training...he was healthy one day.....and dead the next. I sure miss him....I love you oscar....thanks for being my friend:)
I'm so sorry for your loss. Boxers are prone to all kinds od health issues. It must have been traumatic fot you. We have a super reactive boxer boy, Boswell. Excellent with our 4 kids, no resource guarding, but really reactive to strangers and dogs on leash, and guards our house like it's his job. Also stubborn like a boxer! I am getting ready to ecollar train using Larry's methods. Last week our dog slipped out onto the street, ran barking after everybody on the sidewalk, and finally got knocked over by a car. Thankful that the woman braked! He just had some scrapes! We live in a busy downtown area and I MUST be able to control him.
Hey Larry, I just wanna say thank you very much for your help. Means a lot to me that you will go out of your way to make these videos.
Thank you so much for these free videos! I always seem to learn something new every time I watch! I really love your passion for dog training! Thanks!
You crack me up. Just discovered your video channel and have already become a big fan. You are amazing!! Thx for everything you do and giving us those great videos!! Hi from Germany 🇩🇪!
Ahreed
So far the best Training Method video I've seen
she says "yes" like an annoyed boss with an employee who has asked the same question too many times...
Just think how her husband feels....
I wish you were closer to us. It is just so much money to put out, then the cost of traveling too. I like your style. Good with people & dogs. We have 2 Lab/Pitbull girls. I fully believe they are able to be trained. I'm almost 67. They are a handful for me. Bee Blessed Danny and Rita in TN on Rooster's Ridge
I admire how you taught that. Very clear and helpful.
I know consistency is very important. But so is having fun with your dog so that training is interesting and the dog is motivated and successful. I found that some walks are just meandering on the long line ( 20 ft) have helped our relationship. There's a time for structured walks in " heel" and a time for sniffing on " loose leash" or " break", and dog choosing to explore--- such as when in a park. I know it is important to be the leader. But life can be spontaneous too. Variety is the spice of life. My dog enjoys changes in the route of the walk and seeing new places.
I love the way you train. I asked a local trainer about fixing my 2 yr old GS's reactive and territorial behavior. And about e-collar training. She told me my dog can't be trained and said why would I ever shock my dog. I've seen great success when I watch you train the dogs. I wish I live closer to you. I would love to have you train both of my German shepherds.
This video just answered a question I asked on another one of your videos. This is exactly what I was wondering about. Leash training with the e collar for reactive dogs. Great stuff
Larry, I hope you make good money man. I love that the videos are free. I've learned a lot from your videos. You can consider me a fan.
Judging from the neighborhood he's got no complaints haha
HI LARRY I WATCHED ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS AND IT WAS AMAZING WHAT I SAW IT WAS NOTHING BUT IT WAS COOL WHEN YOU JUST STOOD THERE WITH THE DOG AND WHEN HE WANDERS AWAY AND YOU BRING HIM BACK TO YOU AND THEN HE WOULD LOOK AT YOU I LOVE IT
Angela! I am so proud of you! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Larry, you are the greatest with aggressive/fearful dogs. Please have the person who is filming use a tripod so the camera doesn't jump around, and make sure they focus the camera. There is a lot of blurry camerawork.
Also, do you always use a slip-collar for this training?
I appreciate that you don't use prong collars like SO MANY "trainers" do! Your protocols WORK and that is such a relief to owners who hire you.
I can’t wait for your book to show up.
Larry you are amazing. I am going to meet you one day! I love your philosophy and instruction, all very clear communication w the dog. Incredible. Thank you for these videos. You’re truly an inspiration!
Great information !! Question though what collar did you switch to from the prong collar? I also had some bad training instructions with both the prong and ecollar .
This video is an answer to prayer. Thank you.
What did you switch him out to Larry, a slip collar or a martingale?
cypherknot looks like martingale, the same leash is used from the beginning of the video
Zoya is not food motivated, so I been praise and with the E Collar. I really appreciate this video.
Great videos. Training tools can always be used in an abusive way. Glad to see you promote the correct humane approach which is clearly, plenty effective. Thank you for these great videos!
Theres so much focus on switching the collar that I want to know what the new collar is
yeah i think we need a fundraiser to get you a windsock and proper mic for your phone. he's a lovely puppy and so glad you helped Angela - they look lovely together.
I love to see him coming out of his shell. You do an amazing job here, and Angela as well...
Like watching a genius at work. Great video Larry.
A properly fitted herm sprenger prong collar will not snap off. When used correctly they are great tools.
Wrong! They CAN open !! .Always use a safety clip onto another collar..
She first of all did not even have the prong collar on correctly. The other trainer did not educate her or show her how to properly use the prong in the first place. It disappoints me how some trainers are advocating for a tool, yet they don't even know how to use it.
right i cant even and that trainer is a dumbass you dont use prongs for dogs that pull like that you just dont
I like everything you have taught her but I have a malinois and the prong collar worked wonders for my boy. But I was taught the correct way. Also have used ECollar effectively. Good Job on the Pup
I use one on my mal as well, and it has worked wonders! I have read so many comments on here from people saying prong collars are cruel and abusive. Prong collars are NOT cruel if you are educated on how to use them properly, unlike this woman. She had the prong collar fitted completely wrong, and way too loose and low on the dog's neck. You can't just throw a prong collar on and expect your dog to just understand what you want, especially if you don't even have the thing fitted right. There has to be training paired with the tool. I have learned a lot from Larry, but there are many different approaches to training, and I don't agree with him on prong collars.
Oh they were 1 yr old in March. We got them at 5 months. Bad behavior in place. Bee Blessed Danny and Rita in TN on Rooster's Ridge
Can this method of training be used without the E-collar ?
Yes! Just use the marker word.
Great informative content and extremely interesting video Larry. Thank you for your profession sensible teaching techniques. Good stuff Larry
I love your videos and I just got an e collar but was wondering what collar you put on him in place of the prong collar? I have a 70lb pit and he pulls me and is reactive just like this dog I use the prong collar.
I am truly thankful for these videos. They are so helpful. When you switched collars to something more safe, what did you switch to? A martingale? Thank you.
Great Video Larry thanks!!! We have a GSD and he looks just like Link. GSD’s are easier to train than their owners!!! I’m testament to that😂! Lovely neighbourhood!!! Just wondering what brand of E-Collar you use that has the sound emitting from it? Thanks again Larry!!!
He's using a mini educator with a tone box so viewers can understand when he's tapping
finally someone who puts the accent on training the owner too not just the dog.
Ok, my 2 year old dog (husky mixed) has a dog reactivity (he wants to play so bad with them but the anxiety mades him to pull and "cry"). So far he only has that reactivity with other dogs, he is not aggressive with them or with people. DOES THIS METHOD WORK FOR THAT? Great Video Larry.
Yes it would. Working a lot on stay and impulse control will help him acknowledge but not react to surroundings
I almost had to take a Zanax to get through this...lol The owner was stressed, the dog was stressed, Larry seemed a little stressed. Very educational.
Which part of the world do you guys live? So much of open space, just loving it.I live in India, any barter, I’m game
Most of the US is like this, my friend. Come on up and visit us!
Great stuff. Just make sure your camera is not looking into the sun! If you can explain when is the process you sending the pulse form the e-collar. I can see the moments and commands but hard to know when in the process the pulse is sent. Thanks
What type of collar is being used in place of the prong collar?
Great video
Prong collars are not the worst tool for training a dog. That's your opinion. It's worked well for my GSD.
Yeah that was bs...The owner had no idea what she was doing in any respect, let alone using a prong.
Love these real life videos.
Regarding the prong though, the only problem with it was the owner not knowing what she's doing. Same as that other trainer blasting the dog at 80 with the e-collar. She had no idea how to use the prong.....she had tension on it the entire time. Confusing as shit for the dog and just agitating him further.
Great teacher. Good work larry.
Fabulous lesson
You're wonderful, wish you were here in Australia.... I have a Mastiff X - 8 months old, and we're very hands on with him, but could do with a bit of help sometimes!
I love how she says “yeeee’assss”
Dog snorting with his pant like he's got a collapsed trachea from his pulling on that prong. Keep up these great videos! What food are you using or do you suggest for non food driven dogs?
I'm having similar issues with my dog. He's a sweetie and I love him, but he's extremely excited when we go for a walk for the first 10 minutes, and then he chills out. However if we run into other dogs though he becomes VERY excited and it's difficult to walk with him after that even after the dogs are out of sight. Today he nipped at someone in the face because she was leaning in towards his face to hug/pet him when he was excited like this while my boyfriend was walking him :( I'm so grateful that she was understanding and did not blame him for the behavior. I don't know where to start because I don't have the money to pay for boarding/private training, and I would never dream of giving him up. Any tips or suggestions that can help would be so greatly appreciated.
First of all why should some stranger be able to hug your dog? Just don't allow that in the first place. Second thing is, how strong are the basics? Meaning structure, basic obedience, you controlling dog's drive? If you have not put a lot of effort on these, start with crate training, strong basic obedience (sit, down, here, leave it, out, follow).
That prong is wayyy to low
You do awesome work
Pinch collar clearly having no effect if he's pulling on it. Great work as always Larry.
User error not collar design fault.
Definitely the body posture of the handler .....has nothing to do with the fact that the prong color is not working
I know I'm not supposed to "feel sorry" for the dog, I still wan't to say poor peanut; he looks stressed and scattered. Excited to see how you're going to improve his life!
Bit ridiculous to hear people say that dogs that pull or are reactive shouldn't have a prong collar when that's EXACTLY what Tom Davis of Upstate Canine Academy uses to stop pulling and reactivity in minutes.
What did you put on him after the prong if not his regular collar? Just a self-tightening like a nylon slip or a martingale?
He likes to use the Dominant Dog collar. But I don't know if that is what he put on.
electric1609 she had a martingale. I just want something the dog can’t slip out of
@@lklencho are Martingale ok collars or would you recommend another collar?
where are the trees??????????
In the forest.
I have a question, what about us that live in countries where e-collars har illegal? Can you please to a video on how to work with problem-behaviours (aggression, leash-reactivity and so on) without e-collar? Great work btw :)
Just use a regular clicker. The cap of a Snapple bottle is perfect or anything similar
The way I have trained my puppies is to just to let them relax for 10 to 15 minutes in a new environment. If you’re taking them to the park where there a lot of people and dog distractions just sit down on the bench or in the grass. Let them sniff the air sniff the grass but go nowhere. Do this for a few weeks and you’ll find that they are much calmer around people and other dogs. One other tip do not allow your dog near other dogs or vice a versa. If they are on the same path just pull your dog to the side and make them sit and wait for the other one to go bye. At first they lung and pull and want to greet the new dog. Just don’t let that happen. In time with repetition they will calm themselves and wait for the dogs or people to go bye. One other thing do you not take them to dog parks. 10 years ago when I was trying to socialize my black lab and dog parks, all that happened was he was attacked by aggressive dogs. Luckily for him and for me he was a submissive dog. And once the other dogs dominated they left him alone. But I realize then that if he was a little more aggressive the situation would not of been pleasant.
Around 7:33 Larry: the training's gonna start..... Now we'll start.
Dog looks around: wait, what?
*boom* Dog sits without a direct command: Yes! Finally, I can take a load off.
Epic.
very good practice ,Thank you very much 💪💪💪
What is so unsafe about the collar? You were saying it will break, but in that sense any collar can break, help me understand.
You trained her well
She shiuld have been told prior to visit that another collar should have been broght. Immediate defense on her part for his scolding and talking down to her. He also should have had the proper equipment at the beginning while explaining the reasons. Here, hold my camera...
Lame so lame
I have to admit that in the beginning I was thinking if I’d hired a trainer (which I’m currently looking to do after a bad first trainer) and he talked to me like that I’d be in tears. We’re all trying to do the best for our dogs, man, and it’s bad enough to feel like you’re failing your dog. To then have the person you’re paying to help you criticize you so abruptly... that’s the kind of thing that scares us from hiring another trainer, especially after the last trainer only messed up our dog.
Nice to see you work. Shame about the out of focus cam and poor sound.
What are you using instead of the prong collar?
Hey I just wanted to chime in about this e-collar level stuff.
As Larry says, the level is not important.
I bought a brand new mini-educator 1 month ago. With the standard contacts, I feel it at a 5. Using the alternative short-fur comfort adapter contacts, I can't feel it until it gets to 13. My 1yr old Dobermann can't feel it until its on 11 with these short-fur comfort adapter contacts.
Again, as Larry says, the level is not important.
Thanks for the video, Lazza.
Peace
Awesome video
You don’t use prong collars? What do you have him on?
That’s what I want to know
Prong collars are abusive and people who use them on their dog only show they are bad owners who should not have a dog. After some weeks the skin of the neck becomes very harsh and that makes the prongcollar useless. U see that in the video; the dog is still pulling.
He's using a martingale
Mickey Mic not true. Prong collars are only useless when used incorrectly. Only abusive if used incorrectly.
I couldn't hear what the problem of the dog was. He chastised her on her use of tools and didn't have any backups. I would not have used him again.
Prong collars are cruel and unnecessary. I suspect he got a bit angry and then calmed down. It was a good training session at the end of the day. I know because long ago, I did the same to my first GSD puppy. The trainer took a very thin and simple show dog lead and almost immediately had my 'stubborn and un-trainable' GSD heeling, sitting, down and staying quite literally within seconds. A light bulb went off when I realized it's all about the relationship and establishing quiet, confident leadership. All puppies want affection but they want leadership and lessons on life far more.
And what kind of collar u gonna use Larry.....we all love our prong collars on our strong gsd she is gentle as mouse,
“Ok now I want some of that weed your smoking” haha
I believe greatly in the prong... When used right. It shouldn't be used on a chronic puller like that and it should be used as a correction for a command they already know.
How often and how long do you give a dog a treat/reward? Does this continue after training?
Love watching you work with a dog not trained . On ecallers when my ex used one on our lab I said if you use this on her then you have to use it on all levels on yourself first so you know what you are doing to her.
I would love to see a video with a real challenging animal. This one is a dream.
Watch his video with the Alapaha bulldog! It's great, but also hilarious. A beautiful dog.
I've only watched a couple videos but, respectfully, you seem to have a habit of patronizing the owner when you first meet them, enough to where it makes me the viewer uncomfortable. Those with strong personalities may meet that with snappy responses. So if you have a situation where you think a person is being an a-hole, that may be why.
That also may be why you work with animals haha :)
💯
I was turned off by the trainer's initial attitude (somewhere between pridefulness and irritation), but my desire to learn how to help our dog led me to overcome that. No one (human or canine) wants to be demeaned during training.
I agree. Judgmental and rude approach by trainer.
What collar did you switch to?
What collar have you on him?
Any updates on Link? Hoping his turn around has been moving forward. He has a real chance to become a stellar dog here.
What are Petsmart Fingers?
