  • Here is the first time since Dante was a small puppy that all four of my dogs are playing fetch together. I knew there was a good chance Dante would become frustrated and possible try to bite Luca, which he did first go around. Dante is the only dog wearing and e collar. He's been trained on it just like all my other dogs. I applied a higher level, very quick, stimulation right after I said no as Dante went to bite Luca. I used a sound box so listen closely and you can here the timing of the punishment. You'll see Dante's demeanor or drive does not change because I prepared him for that moment

If I had watched with the VOLUME OFF, I would have gotten a TOTALLY DIFFERENT but EQUALLY IMPORTANT TAKE AWAY. Larry has multiple dogs, mostly MALE, interacting in a positive way, but mostly LASER FOCUSED on LARRY. This is SO IMPRESSIVE. He could/should do an entire series on living with and training multiple dogs. Just...WOW. My greatest fear bringing in another dog is that they would be more engaged with each other and "listen" to each other than to me, the human handler. CLEARLY not an issue here. And we've seen these same dogs play together and enjoy each other a zillion times. But the moment he walks into the frame, they are all clearly devoted to him. This is perfect. If Larry analyzed & figured out how he got to this point, SO MANY PEOPLE would benefit.

    • @CMarieHoll
      @CMarieHoll 2 роки тому +4

He has talked about how he doesn't allow his pups to interact until they are very firmly attached to him and looking for him for direction. People make the mistake of getting a puppy and letting it play with their other signs immediately so they attach to each other instead of the owner.

It’s because he works with each of the dogs independently and extensively to build a strong relationship first. My dogs have a lot of time together but they all will prefer my company over the other dog’s because I have spent the time to build a lot of value in me

I've occasionally/rarely hit my very sensitive working line GSD with a stim higher than our normal 4-8. As high as a 28 under extremely high distraction/misbehavior. And to be honest, he "screams" over a 10. He briefly acted "suppressed" a couple days. He's unfortunately definitely "collar wise" (zero misbehavior with collar on), but he wears it now, and I rarely but very occasionally stim at a 6-7 for minor corrections. We're mostly walking off leash, perfect ENTHUSIATIC recalls, great "heel", lots of "break" releases. And now, not suppressed AT ALL. Happy, happy dog. Training is always an exciting game now, that's how I keep him engaged. Even "heel" is fun, I walk super slow, jog, do dance steps, step right 1-3 times for him to follow, and tons of exciting, enthusiatic praise. I try very hard to keep it a challenging game for him. But the e collar is a good backup, just in case. At this stage, I couldn't trust him completely in an urban or suburban environment off leash without it. I walk mostly off leash in a completely relaxed manner, he's under perfect control, and give light stim briefly (5-8) maybe every 3 or 4 walks or so. I GUARANTEE he's happier and more fulfilled because of it.

I don't know how people would be comfortable having their dog off leash in a suburban, urban (or any unfenced area actually) without an ecollar. No matter how high their drive is for that reward, they make mistakes, or there's a higher level competing motivator, or they get frightened. And sometimes these mistakes mean death, if that dog runs in front of a car.

I respect you so much Larry. --The fact that you ask for a better way in a non-passive-aggressive way...

They can't even start to communicate with a dog off lead. Never have been able to.

The e-collar is forbidden to use in a lot of countries. Still dog trainers & owners in these places are able to get well-behaved dogs. Mind-blowing!

@@jonmathisen6871 they are forbidden in a few, and still used a lot in them. But you are right. we did have well trained dogs before e-collars.
But the way we got those well trained dogs was a lot harder on the dog than modern e-collar training ever has been. Sometimes it's not better to go back to the "good old days"
Even then our "well trained dogs" did a lot of things, off lead, they shouldn't do and knew they shouldn't do, but did anyway. With an e-collar I have a way to communicate with my dogs at great distances. Something no other tool does.
In a multi dog situation no tool gives you a way to communicate better than an e-collar.
A dog is a thinking animal. No matter how well trained it my decide not to do what it has been taught in a given circumstance. The highest level dogs in the world once in a while decide to do something they want and not what they are ask. If that happens off lead, out in the real world, it can have deadly circumstances. I'd rather avoid that if possible.

There is just no other way to get that dog's attention in such moment! I learned how to do the ecollar and it is my peace of mind and my insurance on my walks with my reactive dog. When she's off leash I can recall her when triggers like other dogs or cats come into sight. It's a real help in my real world. LOVED seeing all four dogs out together, lovely. Thanks.

Larry, I’m really glad you posted this video. I have use the E collar in the same way. I’ve only had to use it once or twice on each dog. It was either they get hit by a car, or where their “good girl collar“. Now they wear it in a high stress situation, but I don’t even turn it on. They get a treat when I put it on, and when I take it off. The idea of them having it on is enough. We always have to act on the side of caution. Thank you. I agree with so many of your techniques, and appreciate it when you say that you thought it would never work, but you tried it. Your dogs have a great home life ❤️

If you missed it the first time around it happens right after 4:20.
Not an anti-ecollar person, but since I can't afford one I have to correct them without it. I raised my dog completely off leash, except for situations where it's necessary. I do what Joel Beckham does: interrupt with "HEY" and go to the dog to punish accordingly. Usually say "no nipping" or something similar, in combination with a time out. Same for eating of the street, or doing anything inappropriate.
In my circles people don't play with fewer toys than dogs, because they get into fights. Even dog trainers will tell people to not put dogs in that situation. So I guess that's how they "deal" with this: avoidance.

I rescued what is called here (Australia) a BullArab. These dogs were made for pig hunting by crossing Bull Terrier, Shorthaired Pointers, Grey Hound and Mastiff. I rescued my bitch because she was about to be shot for not hunting as she should. I rescued her sight unseen and she was delivered to my door. This dog was uncontrollable, had no manners and thought every thing belonged to her. I discovered Larry's channel while searching for help with this dogs behaviour.
Long story shortened.......I always hated anything to do with "Electric" collars, because I really had no idea about them. After watching what Larry could do I bought a mini educator and learnt how to use it. My dog also learnt about it. My dog actually is far more comfortable wearing her collar than not. She only wears it now because it has an emergency stop button and our walks/runs always encounter wild life of some description.
I could never have turned this dog into the dog she is today without her educator. I am 71 years old and my dog is my best friend, her manners are impeccable. Being so old, and having such a big strong, incredibly fast, high prey dog was a huge problem at first, but with the Ecollar it is like having me whispering in her ear at great distances.

i am not really "anti e-collar", it's a useful tool for professionnals and people who really know what they are doing. But i think at least 80% of people who use e-collars do it badly, and then it can cause real harm just like a choke collar. For my personnal training and all my client i keep the dogs with a harness on a long lead within hand reach, and when a correction or control is needed i do it manually with the leash.
It's harder to manage than an e-collar and less practical i admit, but at least i'm sure my clients cannot hurt their dogs by accident

I desperately need to have a convo with Larry. I've emailed before. 😔 I'm at my wits end with a 50 pound aussiedoodle and a newborn due in a week. Dog doest recognize leash corrections, won't listen, won't respond to prong collar, her reactivity appeared from nowhere recently after being an off leash heeling pro. Now if I off leashed she would hurt someone. She yanks me on leash at everything now whether dog or kid or bike. Only 16 month old dog. Petsmart is my only option here and I would never do that to my dog. I wish Larry had online video diagnosis sessions or something to get me in the right direction with training syllabus. I have the time and will to fix her just don't know the regiment to follow or how. Just like e collar conditioning...what is the step by step process to doing that? My dog knows it's an ouchie...doesn't give a shit. Wheb a dog walks by or a bike she don't give a shkt that she's riding the lightning she just ignores it. Sport dog model with 1 to 10 power.

You can learn more effective ways to use the e collar in Larry's book which is only about $10. Larry doesn't tend to use the e collar to correct very much but when he does, it's with a dog who he has built a strong foundation/relationship after conditioning the e collar for recall. I know he would probably recommend starting over with the e collar and using his method which he goes over in tons of detail in his book of many of his videos to go through the stages of conditioning with the tool because that will give you better engagement and a solid recall which is an important basis for getting rid of the other issues. Also, Larry gets thousands of emails every week and so he can't respond to people through there. You might want to try Facebook and comment on his posts and tell him what's going on because he's more likely to see it there. Also, if you have any chance to go to his seminars, I would highly recommend that because he'll help you get off to a good start. Good luck with the dog and the baby!
