One time, when I was leaving Walmart, I saw a kid sitting in the cart in front of me holding a copy of Sonic Mania Plus with an excited, gleeful grin on his face. Man, to see Sonic through the pure eyes of a child one again without all the hate, discontentment, and dissecting.
As a fan, I'll never forget when I was working at a school being surprised at the little kids (like, 5 to 7) being as excited about Sonic as I was at their age, not to mention the older middle school age kids that were into video games being Sonic fans and one of them even throwing shade at Mario. Made me realize that Sonic really is lightning in a bottle and in spite of some rampant mismanagement of the brand continues to have mass appeal.
The most interesting thing about this topic is how Sonic's whole tone of stories and games was changed in 2010 because there were ppl who grew up with the classic games and they HATED the direction of the 2000s era, so they would argue online in forums and on UA-cam videos and that as well as poor reviews eventually made Sega change the tone of the whole series to try and match the tone of the classic games. What's really fascinating to me is that now the ppl who grew up with the 2000s games are mostly all grown up and are mirroring what the old classic fans did back in the day. These fans that grew up with 2000s Sonic love those slightly edgier stories from the 2000s and they really want that style back. Now Sega is changing the direction of Sonic to better match that style and those ppl are mostly receiving that really well, which I find really interesting because it really highlights how people's perception of the series changes depending on which time they grew up in
There's something to be said here about the limits of criticism. It's good to be critical, and it's okay to want better things. It's okay to analyze all the complexities of things as we grow older. But it's also okay to just like something, even because of nostalgia. When we're kids, we form such deep connections with these things we grew up with, but just because we were children doesn't mean those feelings aren't valid anymore. I've always been a supporter of being positive over negative. Even in a franchise as inconsistent as Sonic, there's something to love in everything, We should be celebrating those things instead of latching onto the flaws.
@@jubbalub”Because I do” Isn’t a valid reason in itself, as there is always a reason for something. Thats just a way for people to explain themselves when they either DON’T know how they like something or just don’t FEEL like explaining.
I feel like young people always focus on what they LIKE about something, while older people focus more on what they DON'T like. As an adult, you start to understand how some stuff is made and how it can be improved, but as a child you often assume that what you get can't get any better so might as well enjoy the crap out of it.
@nitrospark It was true for me as well (even though I didn't grow up with Sonic). The franchise has really high highs and really low lows, so it makes sense to me how people can enjoy it in a variety of ways, depending on how sensitive they are when it comes to the good, the bad and the ugly of media they consume.
As someone who is a a little closer to the younger crowd I think my experiences with Sonic are different compared to most people. I grew up with Sonic 1, 2, and cd on mobile, watched Sonic X and adventures of Sonic on hulu and netflix and had mania and forces for my first real console games. I remember getting forces for my 9th birthday and thinking it was so cool but looking back on it is different. Later on I played gens and unleashed on my parents old ps3 and fell in love with those games. Theres just something about sonic as kid that just hits different.
This is something I've always wondered about and why I think ports and accessibility is so important. Like I'm a 90s kid, but Sonic CD was so rare and for a console no one bought so it might as well have never existed and the cartoons were very inconsistent in terms of time and what channel they aired on. So your experience sounds crazy at first, but makes a lot of sense.
@@Kango234 I was born in 1999, and my first experience with Sonic was with the original Genesis trilogy, starting around 2002-2003, when I was 3 years old, so almost 22 years ago! I also grew up with some of the shows, like SatAM and Sonic X. I remember I was in pre-school and the teacher had a VHS tape of Sonic X, and it was the episode where Sonic and Sam were in a race. I also had some of the PC games like Sonic R and the Sonic and Knuckles Collection. I wouldn't play either of the Adventure games until 2013-2014, when I was a teenager, so because I started with the Classic games first, and they were so ingrained into my memory, my thoughts on them then, and to a certain extent to this day, are a bit more critical of the obvious elements, like personally, over half of the gameplay styles not being very interesting or as fun to play as the Sonic levels were. I would love another attempt at the Adventure formula, specifically the Sonic formula, and have that apply to every character, with unique aspects to each character as well, like being able to fly as Tails, glide and climb walls as Knuckles, use Chaos powers as Shadow, psychokinesis as Silver, Amy's hammer, etc.
I remember getting Sonic Forces for my 18th birthday that year (2017) and remember being severely disappointed in it, not just for stuff that Sonic Team has failed with before, like having multiple characters with radically different gameplay styles that don't work, but also being disappointed in the fact that the main course, the Sonic boost levels, PALED in comparison to Unleashed, Colors, and ESPECIALLY Generations. I played those games countless times when I was younger, especially Colors and Gens, so to see the formula be neutered like that hurt me inside. 😥 Another glaring issue was that I had just played Sonic Mania not that long before Forces came out, and had been playing it up until Forces released, and after having the beautiful controls, physics, level design, music and aesthetics of that game, seeing Classic Sonic be butchered in Forces was like a second kick to the gut. And the Avatar? Well, the avatar in Forces is like an even worse combination of all the problems that Modern and Classic Sonic had. So yeah, Forces was not for me at all. Not a dumpster fire like Secret Rings, Sonic '06, and, especially for me, Shadow the Hedgehog (shudders), but nothing even close to the quality of Unleashed, Colors, Gens, or Mania.
One thing that was brought up recently is that as children our imaginations caaarryyyyy us not just with sonic but video games in general. When i was little playing smash brawl, i would make up entire anime ass scenarios in my head to justify these characters fighting
Funny how when I was a kid we had a group of Sonic fans that sat together at lunch in school and we talked about.. anything the only time we argued was when we were talking about who's favorite character could win against the other favorites in a fight (Mine was Silver at the time) now I look online and people are arguing over his quill size and what shade of blue he needs to be I wanna go back man
I feel like when your a kid you simply like Sonic for the fact that he’s cool, the characters are cool, the aesthetic is cooler than what you see in something like Mario etc. but as you get older you really learn to understand the details of things. A good comparison from my own experience would be The Amazing World of Gumball. I used to watch that show all the time after school and I liked it even though 90% of the jokes flew past my head. Nowadays I can actually understand the more subtle jokes and appreciate the series even more. Sonic I feel is kinda like that. Also the editor for this video popped off I found it really eye catching lmao
14:00 Calling it right now. People are going to switch up on Boom, that they always liked it and claiming it to be their favorite Sonic game, and someone will make a Project Boom to fully realize the vision.
@@FowaJCT eh, overclocked is more of it’s own thing, I think forces reimagined is closer to what p06 is, with it being an improved version of the original
Seeing the reaction among kids when Shadow T. Hedeghog appeared in Movie 2 was surreal. Despite Sega doing absolutely nothing for this franchise for so many years prior, somehow, the love of these characters still managed to pass along.
I’m so glad you’re talking about this. I personally look at this franchise as a young adult in the shoes of a younger child. I love that we’re getting great games again. Dope ass animations, comics, and movies. And with the kinder support online. I know if I was a kid at this time I would be so ecstatic!
really good convo but I think another big point of growing with the series compared to trying it later is that you really GROW as a Sonic player over the years, most of these games have some BS moments here and there or are simply more fun once you have 50+ hours and know all the routes and stuff. As a kid you don't have many games and got a bunch of free time so it's more likely that you will stick with these games for a long time trying to master them, avoding the BS and learning to love them, that's something that someone who is just starting the series as an adult or teenager might feel very put off by leading to "Game is broken, Sonic sucks"
I remember my first memory in life which was me, 3 years old, playing Unwiished back in '08. And I remember crying on the 2nd mission because I couldn't figure out how to drift so I gave the controller to my stepbrother who was 17 at the time to do it for me. But the main Sonic games in my childhood were Sonic 2, Unwiished, Secret Rings, and Sonic 4: Episode 1. I remember loving those games. Especially Secret Rings. My brother and I would spend hours playing the party mode of that game. And for like 10 straight years, I would draw nothing but Sonic comics all the time. Everyday I'd spend hours drawing these characters and making my own stories. I did that from like ages 4-14. Eventually I got around to playing every mainline Sonic game and the big spinoffs. But I love Sonic bro. Can't wait for Sonic X Shadow Generations!
What do you mean kids don't care about the complexity of sonic telling merlina at the end of black knight that the world will end eventually but you gotta live the life you have to the fullest?
Hello from Russia. I'm as old a fan as Fedel, I'm 28. In my country Sonic is treated mainly as entertainment for children 5-10 years old. So expressing interest in a franchise when you're older becomes uncomfortable. But the franchise is getting better in this regard, and after Sonic Frontiers, many people began to take Sonic seriously. (Sorry for the typo, my written English is very bad)
I kinda wanted to make a video about this too after that whole thing with Coney saying most sonic games are bad and not really looking to why we enjoy most of these games. Young or old, there are things to love in most of these games.
My first Sonic Game was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the GameCube all the way back when I was 10: although I never beat it as a kid, it resonated with me. As a kid, Sonic the Hedgehog was my favorite videogame character because he was cool and had a legitimately cool personality: now that I'm 31 years old, I can safely say that Sonic rhe Hedgehog is my favorite character in all of pop fiction because of how he is an embodiment of freedom. The Adventure era had so much of an impact on me that I felt inspired to write an anthology-styled book, similar to the story structure of Sonic Adventure
CALL ME GENESIS THE WAY I'M BLAST PROCESSING! It still surprises that kids on this day fall in love with Sonic in any of the medias! I'll never forget the first time I saw and played the adventures games, I felt that these games were growing with me since the genesis! Still enjoy what the series has to offer today, as long they remember and show that Sonic is Cool!
I really like your perspective on this. One thing would like to say though is that this can often be a problem. I'm sure you know where this is going. _Blinded by nostalgia_ I've seen a lot of people complain about the series direction, but most of their points scream "go back to how it was". I can understand why one may say this, but it's not that simple. By far the best example is definitely characterisation. The amount of discourse I see between IDW fans and 2000s fans on this topic is insane. Me personally, I think both versions of the character are good. In fact I think all versions of Sonic are good. But my main point is how people simply complain because it's not what they grew up with. Classic Sonic, 2000s Sonic, Meta Sonic, Current Sonic and IDW Sonic are all different to certain degrees. But does that make one characterisation bad and another good? No, not necessarily. I think the real problem is the fact that it's meant to be the same character, yet it's so wildly inconsistent. Yet I always see people complaining about how one is better than the other, instead of why that is the case. The characterisation argument is one example, and things like gameplay, tone, style, etc are all vulnerable to this too. Like you said, different times in the Sonic series create such wildly different experiences with the blue blur. Imo, I think this is where a lot of the discourse in the fanbase comes from. You have people saying boost is the best, adventure is the best, classic is the best, some even argue that spin offs like Advance and Rush are better. And while it's perfectly fine to have those opinions, because everyone has different nostalgia for the series, it's often difficult to understand one another, since it seems like we're talking about completely different games. I think the best solution to this is to try to understand more then their point, more then the reasoning behind them. Understand their nostalgia. If you do that, it's becomes so much more clear. You imagine yourself as a kid, playing a Sonic game you despise. _Even then,_ you could see why a kid would love the game so much. Perspectives like this would make discussion go so much smother. It'll make it feel like they're less so attacking your nostalgia, but more so defending theirs.
People are so obsessed with demonizing a specific version of the character. Back when Adventure was new people hated the green eyes. Now people say the Sonic in Colors/Generations/Lost World/Forces "isn't sonic". It will probably happen again in a few years when there's another stylistic shift and people get mad for it not being the one they wanted. Personally I love every version of Sonic.
@@samcandles I'm glad there are other people who appreciate what every era has to offer. It's attitudes like this towards the series that will help us grow as a fanbase and help Sonic grow as a franchise.
@@samcandles and he is making a demo for the end of the world stage and project 06 is almost done like the story hub world and the bosses then this is a definite way to play Sonic 06 that is not rushed
I remember sitting in the train playing generations 3Ds, and a kid started to watch me play it. I later let him play for a while and I did see him struggle a lot, because it's a dimps game, but he really enjoyed just going fast and I was just feeling happy that the kid wasn't complaining about struggling but he was enjoying the speed of the game
I actually have been thinking about this stuff, and you're right; it's absolutely different for younger Sonic fans versus veterans of the series. I became a Sonic fan when I was maybe in middle school, and I remember my first mainline Sonic games were Forces and Frontiers (although I did play the Genesis games first and fell in love with them). The Adventure games aren't really my cup of tea because I simply didn't become a fan during that style of Sonic. Even though I'm not someone who grew up in the 90s, I still LOVE Sonic games, just for different reasons. I love being a part of the Sonic community, and I can't wait to look back on where the series goes when I'm older.
Growing up in the 90s Sonic meant everything to me and my cousin, we’d just spend all day playing the Genesis games, reading the Sonic comics and drawing Sonic characters. I’ll never forget when we got Sonic 1, was the only one in the trilogy we hadn’t played yet and we were SOOOOO excited we played through the whole first level with me holding the left part of the controller and him holding the right part of the controller. lol we couldn’t decide who to play first so we’re just like “LET’S DO IT TOGETHER” 😹🥰🦔 all these years later and Sonic still means the world to me! 🖤🦔🙌
As an early teen who grew up on Sonic Gens, Forces & Mania, and just recently getting to play Unleashed & Avdenture, despite how the games are recieved, I still think games like Lost World and even 06 look interesting. However, I do have more fun with the serious stories i.e. Fontiers compared to whatever the hell was Forces.
For me I grew up 06 and remembering that I could not even get past wave ocean’s Mach speed but remembering the level and the multiplayer with my little brother had my love for it, years later when I was able to play through it, I definitely had frustrations but definitely had my fun with it and the glitches in it like the flying box glitch I would spend hours doing it seeing how high I can go.
Please give sonic project 06 a try it the definitive to play Sonic 06 it's a fan remake of sonic 06 your definitely going to enjoy this master piece of a game
@@JustinJulian-00 I definitely played project 06 and it’s so fun to be able to see the potential of the game, I love replaying wave ocean and remembering the times I struggled as a kid lol, thanks tho!
this is such an interesting topic because i feel sonic is one of those series that benefits the most from having that childhood nostalgia, i have a lot of friends who didnt grow up with the games and just cant see the appeal of it at all and i totally get it. you dont NEED to grow up with this series to be so passionate about it but it really does add another level of comfort and hype when you have that emotional connection. theres just something about this funny hedgehog that brings out our inner child in the best way, even when we are older and experiencing those older games differently and maybe liking them more or less, theres still this warm happy feeling this series will always give me, and knowing kids get to grow up with games like frontiers or even sonic shadow gens makes me so happy :')
Ironically, my feelings with the Blue Blur has stayed the same, but I do have more of an analytical mind with how each game works. I think this is thanks to the Game Grumps Era of Sonic content, but I still love Sonic all the same.
I grew up in the 2000s, and fans like me may run the fanbase now, but I remember when the 2000s "shonen" era was DESPISED in the fandom. I can recall all the talking points: how SA2 was the last good Sonic game, how the 4Kids cast was awful, how people want to only play as Sonic, etc. And I remember the 90s kids saying how we 2000s kids were growing up with the "wrong Sonic".... Fast forward, and we are all 20-somethings doing the same thing. I have my issues with the 2010s, but we are in for a rude awakening once the video essays start rolling in, claiming that Forces was an underrated masterpiece lol. Yes, this is on Sega for not having a consistent vision. But I think it's important for us fans to have perspective when discussing these games. We are often too caught up with "our ideal Sonic" that we forget that there are other aspects of the series that appeal more to others. However, like you said, the most important thing is that Sonic remains unapologeticly cool, regardless of what that may look like 10 years from now.
I think one example of this would be how i grew up on sa2 and i still think to this day that it is one of the best 3d game. But looking through the eyes of someone now who hasn't touched sa2 until 2024 i can understand why the style and gameplay of it can be jarring to someone who hasn't played it. But overall i love that sonic has something that any person of any age can get into. I love this blue dude and his friends
I grew up with a lot more exposure to Mario but I remember liking Sonic more and thinking “why isn’t he more popular of a character?” I’m not sure but I think My first experience with Sonic was probably ultimate flash on friv, then I started watching UA-cam and saw all the cool shit on there about Sonic from the community. Then in elementary I was playing on emulators for the original games at school and of course could never finish them and sooner or later I just started really enjoying sonic in general without realizing it. I just kinda vibed with the games and music more.
Personally, I'm on the younger side,13 to be exact,i remember playing sonic 1 2 on mobile when i was like 7-8,and thats how i became a fan of this series
Hey there Fadel, a Mexican Sonic fan checking in! To me Sonic has always remained the same, he is the coolest fictional character in the history of ever 🥺 When I played SA2 at 9 years old it blew my mind and I was never the same again. I'm 31 now and I still think SA2 is the greatest piece of media ever. I still get hella hyped over Sonic and pals, same (if not more so) as when I was a kid. I'm so happy Sega is putting care again into the franchise and going all out with Sonic Movie 3 and Sonic x Shadow gens. I couldn't be more hype and I'm deffo rolling up to the Sonic Movie 3 premiere dressed as Maria 🥺
I’m 20 and my first Sonic game was Colours on the DS and adored every bit of it, I never experienced much of the 2010’s ganes due to financial restraints in my family, never grew up with a Wii U or Playstation ect. so my Sonic exposure was a lot of what came before, Unleashed, Rush, 06 ect
Hello! In my case, being an adult just made me realize that the games were always good. Yes, there's a generational difference, but also it's about the bias, discourse, and content creators of the time. I enjoyed Shadow, '06, both Riders, Black Knight, and Unleashed is a masterpiece to me. As the discourse online was about how bad the games were, I was like "yeah I know the games are bad but...", but now that I've observed carefully after all these years, yeah, that was bullsh*t. The games are great, can you criticize them? Of course, but not say that they're the worst or that the franchise should've died long ago, these games usually scratch an itch that other games don't, so, I really appreciate them. And I love Frontiers and the movies, and I'm happy that it seems that due to Frontiers and the movies, the franchise is attracting more healthy fans and content creators, rather than the previous ones. And I can say that in my case is not nostalgia talking because my first game was Heroes, and I really dislike it hahaha, I also really dislike Secret Rings and Colors which I played around the same time as Black Knight and Unleashed, so. I'm fine with any direction that Sonic takes as long as it respects its own identity (no Colors nor Lost World pls)
I was playing Sonic 2 before I knew how to speak or understand other people speaking. Sonic 2 came out a month before I was born, and as a result, Sonic has been a central part of my life for literally as long as I can remember. I was so young when I played Sonic 2 that I didn't realize it wasn't the first game in the series, because I couldn't read the cartridge. Didn't wind up playing Sonic 1 or 3K until Mega Collection and by that point I'd already played through Adventure 1 & 2. I actually found out about Super Sonic FROM SA2, on accident, because the Super Sonic story in my copy of SA1 didn't load even after beating all the other stories. So I moved on, got my copy of SA2, beat both Hero and Dark stories, and put the game down for a bit assuming I was done. Time passes, DBZ is airing on Toonami in the US, the Cell Saga has recently completed and me and my brother are still riding the high from Gohan's SS2 transformation when I decide to boot up SA2 again for the first time in a little bit on a whim. I find the Final Story where I assumed there would be nothing, struggled with Knuckles' section because I didn't know about the air necklace in Aquatic Mine, beat it anyway after a LOT of struggling, and getting stuck on the Biolizard because the Dreamcast version's water is an instant kill and the floating orb move was tough for a kid. Push past it, finally win, and am greeted with the Super Sonic/Super Shadow transformation sequence. When I say that I screamed, I am really underselling things, that neighborhood should have hearing loss. 9 years old, still in the peak of my DBZ fixation, riding the high of Gohan turning Super Saiyan 2 and wrecking Cell and the Cell Jr.'s absolute SHIT, I discover Sonic the Hedgehog, my autistic hyperfixation essentially since I was born, can turn Super Saiyan. If I was on the path to becoming a regular Sonic fan then, this moment, and the proceeding finale of Sonic Adventure 2 changed my brain chemistry forever, and ensured I'd be the sort of Sonic fan to watch videos and channels like this, and get into community discussions, and learn how Sonic works on a deeper level for every single part of it, and go on giant rants about what makes Sonic Sonic, and what makes Sonic cool. It became and remains an obsession. I think about Sonic every day, and while this isn't where my love for the series started, and SA2 is only number 2 (in a rotation with 3K and Mania, depending on my mood) in my list of favorites (SA1 stays at 1), it IS where it was solidified forever in my heart. I might have given up on Sonic after 06 if not for this moment, and while the games that followed it generally don't share the same sort of love, I'm usually at least willing to give them the same fair shake. Heroes is the last mainline 3D game until Frontiers to touch that part of my heart and mind, to gain that love from me. I like the better boost games but they' not the same, though I DO understand why people aren't so fond of Heroes either. So this post Mania, post Movie, and now post Frontiers Sonic that kids of today are getting starting to rectify the differences between the Sonic that I LOVE and the Sonic that I only LIKE? Man I have hope for this series and its young fans like I haven't felt since I was that kid getting his mind blown by his 2 favorite things coming together like that.
Back in the day I was I little kid whit small amounts of Sonic lore but now I know everything and I became a collector of rare Sonic plush like the sanei Sonic 2012 set and I have it,also I am very excited for Sonic X shadow Generation because I never played generation in fact,I know it’s a little hard to say but I stated the series whit forces but it’s I ok because I like forces,so have a good day game cage.
This is a fantastic video! I am always fascinated with how different generations interact with and enjoy media like this. Im loving reading the comments of very young kids either starting with Frontiers or with the original games because of how accessible the ports for the Genesis games are. I personally hope the main games stay the course of taking their story seriously or at least not being goofy the whole time, but still having all types of spin offs to appeal to fans of different genres. There are so many great characters in the franchise and as someone who grew up during the Adventure era I love that aspect and I know that there are a lot of people out there who would love a character like Blaze or Silver so all I ask is that Sega doesn't go back to pretending "Sonic's friends" don't exist.
Yo Brazilian fan here, just here to express my envy of today's children because we have a lot more sonic merch on Brazil nowadays, smth i wished when I was younger But on the bright side of things i got to fulfill one of my childhood dreams. I always wanted to watch a "sonic rock show" but growing up made me realize that would never happen... Until the sonic symphony. And I had one of the best moments of my life watching live on BGS the sonic symphony and the rock show right after it. Legit cried, something i always hoped as a kid and never thought it would happen, actually happened, so... Yeah Feels good being a sonic fan recently Edit: I'm 21 btw
6:00 This description of finding out that games can be broken through experiencing Sonic 06 at a friend's house is hilarious but I get it. I think a few licensed games and shovelware back in the day had glitches or other problems really gave me the revelation that "wow, video games that are sold are capable of failing to function" for the first time. It's a formative experience that I think everyone getting into video games should experience, not just by playing recommended good games.
While I'm only 15 atm, Sonic is still one of the things I grew up with, I think it was either Dash or a port of the first game, but since then I always loved Sonic and the recent games really show how good the franchise is after the era I grew up lovingSonic in, it just got better. I love Frontiers so much that it will feel insane to think of it as someones first Sonic game.
As a kid, I would nonbstop talk about Sonic, but when I got older I got extremely burnt out by the series because I wasn't interested but then when Sonic Frontiers came and When I heard about The year of Shadow, the light was ignited. Most friends aren't huge sonic fans, and my cousins prefer other platforms' games than Sonic, but all in all, this is a good series, and the movies production fucking slaps! So right now, I'm at a normal love with the franchise, but if there's one thing I would love to see them crossover, more video games like Mario, Fortnite, Overwatch, other platformers, fighting games, etc.
For me i was the biggest sonic fan as a kid and i kinda didn’t really fw him after generations but once the movie came out again as an adult i thought he was raw asf and i love him now
i was born in 2003 and i grew up playing sonic adventure 2 (my first video game). it's still peak to this day and i replay it every year, but this year i finally decided to 100% it. wish me luck, fellas.
Yes! to everything in this video, it’s the kind of Sonic related talk that really cheers me up and gets me excited for the franchise and whatever it has to offer. I didn’t grow up with it, sadly, I wasn’t really that into videogames, and even when my exposure to them came via watching my older siblings play in different platforms… they never touched a Sonic game. We did, however, get All Stars Racing and played the CRAP out of that game, and I still can confidently say that it’s my favorite racing title of all time. I mean it, now that I’ve been actually playing videogames in the past half decade, Mario Kart? CTR? naaah get on Sonic and Sega’s All Stars level (I do like those games though). And I did go see the first movie in theaters with my best friend because we were genuinely excited for what it represented. I only started to get into the series proper around February this year, after binging Prime. I’m in my twenties and all I knew for the most part about Sonic was his online presence and his role in early video game history… the memes, fancomics, fandubs, its mixed reputation, and such. And now, getting to actually experience these characters, learn about their history, seeing the sheer amount of content out there both official and fan made, the music, the games, social media output, everything! It’s like I can’t get enough, man! And it’s like SEGA wants to keep on giving now more than ever. I am immensely hyped for future releases, and want to get my greedy hands on all previous games and mods/fangames because the Sonic franchise IS super cool, and fun, and unique. Sonic Mania is amazing, Dream Team is honestly good, Murder of Sonic is fantastic, all the comics have their own neat thing going on, etc, and this is only scratching the surface. I wholeheartedly agree that Sonic should be allowed to grow and change, and, as a bit of an outsider still, I believe it’s that insistence on keeping “consistency” or that aversion to change in the franchise, what ultimately hurts the experience in the long run. Because a ton of people are dead-set on criticizing every conceivable aspect of this series, and as someone who felt like a kid in a candy store upon diving into the world of Sonic, free of all expectations and nitpicks, I promise I enjoyed just about everything. Sonic The Hedgehog is a blast in every shape and form if you let yourself have fun. That being said, yes please let the movies be their own thing!! I’m begging!! It’s a great opportunity to have a different continuity that isn’t 100% dependent on the source material, and can take these characters to different places. Sort of what like Boom was attempting to do, but on an earnest, more emotionally driven approach. That should be an exciting prospect, not a dreadful one!
This is absolutely a real thing cause Heroes was my 2nd Sonic game and I can't help but love it despite the messy controls and THAT BUM MYSTIC MANSION LEVEL-
Sonic was a series I never grew out of, I was a simple kid Sonic was cool and colorful. Controls and all that other stuff I didn't care about; I played stuff I liked over and over again, and put down stuff I didn't; Mario was fun but it never caught me Sonic had TV Shows and Comics that I did collect for a bit; I'd have to thank my big bro as well he was/is a big Sonic fan. I can say in all honesty through it all to today.. I've never not thought Sonic wasn't cool.
for a while i used to never want to play sonic because it just seemed too childish now that i actually played the games i know i was incorrect the reason i thought that though was because of the younger fans who only played the sonic mobile games and watched the movies but are always wearing their sonic shirts acting like the biggest sonic fan because that was all i ever heard of sonic but then i had a friend who always talked about how much he wanted to play sonic unleashed and 06 because he was an actual sonic fan and he got me into the games although it does not help that my first 3d sonic game was forces even though i didn't like it at all it got me interested in these characters and the world they live in so i kept playing the games and i love them
I think you're right because for the longest time, I don't think I ever beat any of the classic games when I played them in the mega collection and it wasn't until just last year that I actually beat Sonic Heroes cause those special changes were a nightmare as a kid, but I had no big issues with Frontiers.
Can't believe Adventure 2 and Mega Collection were my first sonic experiences. I'm 12. I was into "retro" gaming since i was 9. I got a Gamecube on my 9th birthday along with SA2B. Sure, I played Mega Collection first, but that's 2D. (if you say 3D Blast is 3D, nah, it's isometrical.) I love SA2B, I love Mega Collection, Mega Collection made me experience the original versions of the goated Death Egg Saga + other games, and it was the first time I 100% S3&K, S2, and S1 aswell! After that, I got the Xbox 360, (I have all the 360 sonic games) Switch, and PS2! And now I play the goated versions on pc (the fanmade pc ports and the pc re-releases of SA1 and SA2, all with the goated mods that restore the games to their former (and better) selves. Thanks, Gamecube.
It's funny that this topic comes up, cause I was just thinking about the first Sonic movie and I kinda feel the opposite way about that. I think I appreciate the down to earth, heartfelt story it told as an adult, and would have probably been disappointed if I was a kid watching it. Movie 2 meanwhile makes me legitimately sad that it didn't exist when I was a kid.
The first Sonic Game I've ever played is SOnic CD on my dad's phone! I was born in 2008 so I grew up during the real dark age which was 2010-2020 of Sonic! I've grew up loving the SOnic series and I still kept the love for SOnic. I used to see Sonic as a guy who is a hero, cracks jokes unnecessarily, and cocky, but when Sonic frontiers came out, it changed my view of SOnic and made me revisit the goood ol SOnic days at 1991-2009. THis was SOnic's true character. A guy who is free as the wind and does what he thinks is right and cracks a jokje during the necessary times because that's part of his cocky nature and knew how he took thing seriously. This is the REAL Sonic. And from now on, this is the golden Era of Sonic. All though Sonic had some boo boos, like SOnic 06, but thanks to prject 06, fans are now praising it to this day that it had a lot of potential but SEGA's dumbass decision to split Sonic Team in two to work on Sonic and the Secret rings. But I like 06 now (ecept that part the last story where elise kissed Sonic) Sonic UNleashed was misunderstood at it's time but now people relised how good it is and it's my favorite SOnic game on the Xbox series X! Plus I loved SOnic X when I was 10 but then I rewatched it and it was pretty shit on English Dub when I got older and the Sonic X JP dub was way better and kept my love for Sonic X! No franchise is perfect and SOnic is no starnger. Mario isn't perfect either. He also had some boo boos as well as Sonic. But Sonic Team and SEGA are now listening to fans and Sonic is now going back to the 1998-2009 era of Sonic and we eating good with Frontiers and Shadow Generations! And plus I watch character Essays of Sonic and how people love these characters. And that made me in love with Sonic characterization! (Espicallly in Black Knight and SHadow in Sonic 06) I hope maybe we might get another Sonic anime. (IMO I want studio Ufoatable to do this SOnic anime with SEGA and SOnic TEam! I mean with Demon Slayer coming to it's end and adpating GEnshin Impact, I would love to see how they would do SOme Sonic action scenes. Like action scenes where they exceed those SUper Sonic titan sequences from Sonic FRontiers! And Ian FLynn with Shiro MAekawa and Kiyoko Yoshimura [who wrote Sonic 06, Kiyoko wrote SOnic X season 3, and Sonic Unleahsed, SHiro wrote SOnic storybook games, Sonic Adventure 2, and SOnic 06 with Kiyoko] come together to write the story together (I made a comment about that in your New Sonic ANime Potential Video! And a new SOnic RPG (Maybe by Hoyoverse IMO which I made a comment on your "New Sonic RPG" video Fadel!) Thx Fadel for joining me and all of us on our Sonic journey. You really help me kept my Love with Sonic! And your the best along with the rest of the fans to help SEGA and SOnic Team to create new experiences and ideas with inspirations from fans to get Sonic onto new heights!
I was 11 when I first played sonic forces and I enjoyed it apart from the short levels however in 2021 I played it again and I didn’t like it because I understood its flaws
This is me with Heros and Unleashed bc with Hero's I had no clue that I had to beat the game with every team to get the final boss fight until I was like 16. With Unleashed as a kid it became and is stull my favorite Sonic game ro this day I started playing it. I love everything about it but now going online and finding out everybody hated it had me confuse bc I thought it play just like a Sonic game but seeing most saying they like the day stages but not the night ones bc of the werehog which also had me even more confuse bc I loved the werehog but now I see the problem with him and understand were they're getting at, but also bc I used to pkay a lot combat games like GOW, DMC and some old school beat-em up games I played a lot as a kid thats probably why I was so used to him
- My first Sonic game back then was Sonic Rush when I was 7 and I never got past Water Palace, I was born in 2006 so i grew up with the Dark Age but I was still a Mario fan at the time so I didn't pay much attention to Sonic until i was 8 or 9 when I found a Gamecube copy of SA2B & SADX in my dad's basement and looking back they were still cool and the rest was history and I just became a Sonic fan and played the games despite the flaws, I used to think Sonic was this cocky, snarky hedgehog with attitude, But after Frontiers came out and Shadow Generations being shown it changed my whole view on the franchise and hell I'm pretty sure kids who've gotten into Sonic thru the movies or Prime will have the same idea, I went back to replay Sonic Heroes + Shadow and realized how hard those games were, I got to play 06 when I was 10 and it was bad but I replayed it and now I suddenly like it again (yes, even the kiss) - But Sega/Sonic Team (Post-Frontiers) are now taking Sonic seriously again like they're hiring new people and up the quality, But while people do think Sonic is going back to the 2000's era levels, I still think Sonic Team/Sega wants to evolve past that and reach newer heights, And I've seen countless video essays about the characterisation and the future of the series and re-read mine from March and It showed me how people love Sonic and the cast and how passionate they are when It comes to it online that they didn't want to expose that love about Sonic, But nowadays you're seeing kids wearing Sonic shirts, or having Sonic figurines (maybe bootlegs but whatever) . - Though I will say this; Sonic is basically something like Spider-Man where It's for kids but also has mature/serious tone/media while having different age POV's, And if they ever do make a new Sonic RPG (I'm gonna get dogged 4 this), But i would love if Hoyoverse made a Sonic game, After ZZZ I'd love to see Hoyo take on the ZZZ-style a bit more and maybe Sonic would be perfect imo. And for a new anime, I hope it's in the same style as Dark Beginnings and has the same type of scenes from Final Horizon - also Thank you Fadel Gamescage for being in the community and half-revolutionising Sonic's public image, You really helped keep my hype for Sonic and it's franchise! Always keeping up with the hype and positivity along with the rest of the fans on Twitter to make sure Sonic Team creates new stories and creativity from fans to get Sonic to new horizons. Keep up with the wild intros, And expand your other interests like Dragon Ball, I'd love to see you do a Dragon Ball Movie revisited on stream. 12:37 I love when the Odyssey footage switches, It also syncs with the beat
I beat sonic and the secret rings with no skills when I was younger.. yeah I can’t believe it either. I feel like that shouldn’t be possible either but I clearly remember beating the game and not engaging with the skills at all
As a child myself I would like to say I love Sonic and a lot of the complaints I’ve seen for things like forces or bigs story in adventure I just don’t see it and I think they’re awesome and everyone is overeacting
Even though I don't own any consoles and physical copies of any games...... My first Sonic experience was Ultimate Sonic (fan game) and then Sonic and Knuckles (the time when emulation was new to me) way back to 2007... Then I came around that there's Sonic Games and after coming to college (2019) I installed steam and bought Sega Mega Drive Collections and then whatever Sonic games came to Steam....
I met some younger boys the other day and they were talking about how they love sonic and all the games they played. Seeing younger people be so passionate about the series that was my childhood and will eventually follow me into adulthood is so heartwarming. I also saw like a 3 year old with a sonic shirt and he was cute XD (edit) the boys were real ones bc they didn't like forces 💀
As a Sonic fan who's a teen and has grown up with Sonic since I was a young kid, for me personally I try to ignore the bugs or inconsistencies in Sonic games. I just try to enjoy the games for what they are. Same goes for the movies, comics and tv shows. Human characters? Who cares! It's part of the lore for that section of the franchise, if it's set in the human world then expect there to be humans! Bad writing? Wait for the story to be completed properly, then look back on it and question...is the WHOLE thing bad? Or not? Are there good moments? Sure!...... Bad gameplay? Practice gimmicks and tricks or even glitches with the moveset to make it fun! Too difficult? KEEP TRYING. Point is I've always just tried to appreciate Sonic content no matter how good or bad people think it is. Like heck! I grew up on Wii and DS consoles for 10 years, modern games are just as awesome to me for graphics and sometimes gameplay alone 😂 The only Sonic games I don't really like is Secret Rings and Boom. However, in my opinion just appreciate what's good about a Sonic game, comic, show or film and try to ignore what isn't really your style. Of course critique is important in order to improve, but we shouldn't let it dampen our enjoyment of Sonic content. Love this franchise ❤
When I was in a kid in the late 2000s,my parents got me a Wii and bought me zero gravity and black knight, my brain chemistry altered when I consumed those games, I thought both games were so cool aesthetically good and terms of gameplay (I still like the gameplay lol) overall that’s how I feel and I’m sure that there will be someone who might like these games or hate them.
I love the franchise now because it's like an escape from reality. I love the world, lore, and characters and something about it clicks with me and makes me so happy yet there are mf's out there that shit on me and call me a manchild which I mean yeah to an extent but they think Sonic is something brainless that's all sunshine and rainbows but that's not even close to the truth. Shadow's whole character arc in Adventure 2 shows that and even in Black Knight with Merlina wanting a world that's eternal but Sonic says "Every world has it's end. I know that's sad but that's why we have to live life to the fullest in the time we have.... at least that's what I figure". Stuff like that resonated with me and so many other fans yet casuals dismiss it. Now, I'm in my 20's and i don't care if people judge me for liking Sonic, that shit is my Marvel.
The amount of kids I see in public wearing Sonic clothes in the last few years is crazy. I never used to see that stuff much, even when I was a kid it was never that prevalent I feel.
I think a lot of criticism from older fans regarding sonic games comes from the fact that most notable sonic games have a variety of gameplay styles and characteristics that become jarring for people who don’t want that variety. Swapping from high speed platforming to combat, treasure hunting, mech shooting etc, gets boring and, most importantly, annoying for older sonic fans. On the other hand, kids who grew up with these games most likely were just happy to be able to play as their favourite Sonic the Hedgehog characters, and so it never crosses their minds the differences in gameplay.
Man🥹
imagine being a hater (i still havent become one yet, give it a few years)
As a fan, I'll never forget when I was working at a school being surprised at the little kids (like, 5 to 7) being as excited about Sonic as I was at their age, not to mention the older middle school age kids that were into video games being Sonic fans and one of them even throwing shade at Mario. Made me realize that Sonic really is lightning in a bottle and in spite of some rampant mismanagement of the brand continues to have mass appeal.
Thats what I love about sonic that whether you are an child or adult you will find something with the sonic franchise to enjoy with .

🤨
This video felt good. I feel like I grew up again. The idea of people being nostalgic for Frontiers one days just hits different.

I wish more people would realize that "because I do" is a perfectly valid reason to like something
It's really annoying, whenever I say I enjoy sonic forces people get really shocked and/or mad.
That’s a crazy POV LOL
@@GamesCage REAL
Another glaring issue was that I had just played Sonic Mania not that long before Forces came out, and had been playing it up until Forces released, and after having the beautiful controls, physics, level design, music and aesthetics of that game, seeing Classic Sonic be butchered in Forces was like a second kick to the gut.
Funny how when I was a kid
we had a group of Sonic fans that sat together at lunch in school
and we talked about.. anything
the only time we argued was when we were talking about who's favorite character could win against the other favorites in a fight (Mine was Silver at the time)
now I look online and people are arguing over his quill size and what shade of blue he needs to be
I wanna go back man
I feel like when your a kid you simply like Sonic for the fact that he’s cool, the characters are cool, the aesthetic is cooler than what you see in something like Mario etc. but as you get older you really learn to understand the details of things.

MHMMMMMM
really good convo but I think another big point of growing with the series compared to trying it later is that you really GROW as a Sonic player over the years, most of these games have some BS moments here and there or are simply more fun once you have 50+ hours and know all the routes and stuff.
EXACTLY

I loved that moment even as a kid. It's a great message wdym.
I was 9 years old and I completely adored that moment 😂 We can't just assume kids are mindlessly consuming things either, smh

Most? I'd probably say all. If even 06 has things that people obsess and fanboy over then there is good things to be found in every single Sonic game.
_Blinded by nostalgia_
I've seen a lot of people complain about the series direction, but most of their points scream "go back to how it was".
This comment is extremely underrated.

Veteran Sonic fan: Am I so out of touch? *pauses* No it's the kids who are wrong
Definitely a breath of fresh air, most Sonic fans would've called that poor kid out for being bad at the game..
WE ARE A THRIVING PPL

Gotta love Sonic Boom man, literally my childhood right there....ride on

this is such an interesting topic because i feel sonic is one of those series that benefits the most from having that childhood nostalgia, i have a lot of friends who didnt grow up with the games and just cant see the appeal of it at all and i totally get it. you dont NEED to grow up with this series to be so passionate about it but it really does add another level of comfort and hype when you have that emotional connection. theres just something about this funny hedgehog that brings out our inner child in the best way, even when we are older and experiencing those older games differently and maybe liking them more or less, theres still this warm happy feeling this series will always give me, and knowing kids get to grow up with games like frontiers or even sonic shadow gens makes me so happy :')
Ironically, my feelings with the Blue Blur has stayed the same, but I do have more of an analytical mind with how each game works. I think this is thanks to the Game Grumps Era of Sonic content, but I still love Sonic all the same.
YEP💀
However, like you said, the most important thing is that Sonic remains unapologeticly cool, regardless of what that may look like 10 years from now.
i'll make that forces video just give me some time...
Oh and despite all of this, secret rings is genuinely one of my favorites

Thank you for telling the story friend
Back in the day I was I little kid whit small amounts of Sonic lore but now I know everything and I became a collector of rare Sonic plush like the sanei Sonic 2012 set and I have it,also I am very excited for Sonic X shadow Generation because I never played generation in fact,I know it’s a little hard to say but I stated the series whit forces but it’s I ok because I like forces,so have a good day game cage.
:’)
Yo Brazilian fan here, just here to express my envy of today's children because we have a lot more sonic merch on Brazil nowadays, smth i wished when I was younger
But on the bright side of things i got to fulfill one of my childhood dreams. Yeah
Feels good being a sonic fan recently
Edit: I'm 21 btw

6:00 This description of finding out that games can be broken through experiencing Sonic 06 at a friend's house is hilarious but I get it.
I think a few licensed games and shovelware back in the day had glitches or other problems really gave me the revelation that "wow, video games that are sold are capable of failing to function" for the first time. It's a formative experience that I think everyone getting into video games should experience, not just by playing recommended good games.
It’s so funny LOL
Holy shit I’m glad you finally got into it!!!
This is absolutely a real thing cause Heroes was my 2nd Sonic game and I can't help but love it despite the messy controls and THAT BUM MYSTIC MANSION LEVEL-
10 - 15 years?? I want Sonic Boom back NOW
NOOOO
If they did that, I hope it's a complete reboot 💀
Exactly! I couldn’t get the secret ending in Adventure as a kid because of Big The Cat. I had no idea what to do, the gameplay was confusing!
I just feel like sonic's aura was enough for me for a kid
Sonic was a series I never grew out of, I was a simple kid Sonic was cool and colorful. Controls and all that other stuff I didn't care about; I played stuff I liked over and over again, and put down stuff I didn't; Mario was fun but it never caught me Sonic had TV Shows and Comics that I did collect for a bit; I'd have to thank my big bro as well he was/is a big Sonic fan.
I can say in all honesty through it all to today.. I've never not thought Sonic wasn't cool.
He’s HIMMY 🥹
for a while i used to never want to play sonic because it just seemed too childish now that i actually played the games i know i was incorrect the reason i thought that though was because of the younger fans who only played the sonic mobile games and watched the movies but are always wearing their sonic shirts acting like the biggest sonic fan because that was all i ever heard of sonic but then i had a friend who always talked about how much he wanted to play sonic unleashed and 06 because he was an actual sonic fan and he got me into the games although it does not help that my first 3d sonic game was forces even though i didn't like it at all it got me interested in these characters and the world they live in so i kept playing the games and i love them
I still want a Sonic Unleashed 2
Imagine it did😭
My little cousin has a bootleg modern sonic figure whos arms are blue I have to restrain myself from pointing it out dawg
Wholesome video, just goes to show how cool Sonic is :)

That Sonic CD port changed lives LMAOOO
I was 11 when I first played sonic forces and I enjoyed it apart from the short levels however in 2021 I played it again and I didn’t like it because I understood its flaws

This is me with Heros and Unleashed bc with Hero's I had no clue that I had to beat the game with every team to get the final boss fight until I was like 16.
With Unleashed as a kid it became and is stull my favorite Sonic game ro this day I started playing it. I love everything about it but now going online and finding out everybody hated it had me confuse bc I thought it play just like a Sonic game but seeing most saying they like the day stages but not the night ones bc of the werehog which also had me even more confuse bc I loved the werehog but now I see the problem with him and understand were they're getting at, but also bc I used to pkay a lot combat games like GOW, DMC and some old school beat-em up games I played a lot as a kid thats probably why I was so used to him
It's crazy to me that the first videogame of some people was roblox.
🎶Rolling around at the speed of sound🎶
- My first Sonic game back then was Sonic Rush when I was 7 and I never got past Water Palace, I was born in 2006 so i grew up with the Dark Age but I was still a Mario fan at the time so I didn't pay much attention to Sonic until i was 8 or 9 when I found a Gamecube copy of SA2B & SADX in my dad's basement and looking back they were still cool and the rest was history and I just became a Sonic fan and played the games despite the flaws, I used to think Sonic was this cocky, snarky hedgehog with attitude, But after Frontiers came out and Shadow Generations being shown it changed my whole view on the franchise and hell I'm pretty sure kids who've gotten into Sonic thru the movies or Prime will have the same idea, I went back to replay Sonic Heroes + Shadow and realized how hard those games were, I got to play 06 when I was 10 and it was bad but I replayed it and now I suddenly like it again (yes, even the kiss)
- But Sega/Sonic Team (Post-Frontiers) are now taking Sonic seriously again like they're hiring new people and up the quality, But while people do think Sonic is going back to the 2000's era levels, I still think Sonic Team/Sega wants to evolve past that and reach newer heights, And I've seen countless video essays about the characterisation and the future of the series and re-read mine from March and It showed me how people love Sonic and the cast and how passionate they are when It comes to it online that they didn't want to expose that love about Sonic, But nowadays you're seeing kids wearing Sonic shirts, or having Sonic figurines (maybe bootlegs but whatever) .
And for a new anime, I hope it's in the same style as Dark Beginnings and has the same type of scenes from Final Horizon
- also Thank you Fadel Gamescage for being in the community and half-revolutionising Sonic's public image, You really helped keep my hype for Sonic and it's franchise! Always keeping up with the hype and positivity along with the rest of the fans on Twitter to make sure Sonic Team creates new stories and creativity from fans to get Sonic to new horizons.

I'm in the group of people that enjoy nearly every piece of Sonic Media.

Did you see the new footage of Shadow Gens that the official channel has published?
Goo goo, gah gah
I was cracked at the classic games as a kid. I beat every classic game with all the emeralds. Did take me a few tries tho
And that something Mario games haven't touched on since super Mario Galaxy
I can just say, Agreed
I love Sonic Heroes so much.
Though that might be because I grew up with that game.
It does *not* hold up nowadays.
Enjoying Sonic as a kid way back then meant finding Sonic 4 unironically fun
...and I still find it unironically fun 💀💀💀💀
The amount of kids I see in public wearing Sonic clothes in the last few years is crazy. I never used to see that stuff much, even when I was a kid it was never that prevalent I feel.
the only thing i care about a sonic game is to have fun
And having a good story to keep us invested because gameplay alone is not enough for me
.In fact my first ever sonic game was sonic adventure 2 demo on ps3.I was about 3.probably somr where in 2011
That intro tho💀

I wish I got into Sonic when I was younger (been a fan for only 2 years lol) but I refused to play any other game that isn’t Mario💀
Play sonic rpg series I think you'll like it, 10 episodes are very good
I think a lot of criticism from older fans regarding sonic games comes from the fact that most notable sonic games have a variety of gameplay styles and characteristics that become jarring for people who don’t want that variety.
Nah Bro Imagine Ur Mother Watched Ur Videos And Heard That Intro💀
Every one who grew up with unleashed probably got stuck at adabat day medal check point😂
